What is your favorite thing to do in an MMORPG? Poll.

gillvane1gillvane1 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,503

What's your favorite thing to do in an MMORPG? Please answer the poll according to this scenario. You have lots of things to do in RL, but suddenly you have some free time to play your favorite MMO. You can only do one thing with the free time available to you. What is the number one thing you want to do?

Yes, I know some of you will say you like everything, or you like different things on different days, but in this case you can only pick one. If there is something you like to do in an MMORPG that is not listed in the Poll, please post what it is.

For me it's Xping, just killing mobs, but only in groups.

I'm probably in a tiny minority, but I really just like grouping, and mostly in pick up groups (PUGS). It's fun because you have to work together as a team, or you get wiped out. You meet interesting people, and not so interesting people, and it's a puzzle to figure out where you can Xp without getting killed, and how to work together with whatever classes you are able to get to group together.

Next would be questing in a group. I don't want to figure out the quest that much, but I know some people like that. But if someone knows the quest already, and I can get in a group and just run through the quest, that's fun too. Do I want to spend time figuring out where exactly Blerg the Bandermancsh hangs out so I can take him 20 Bat Wings? No, I don't. But if someone knows where he is already, I'll go kill 20 bats with them, and take the wings to Blerg.

After that, it's PvP, mostly Realm V Realm. That's always a great way to take a break from Xping. Go jump into a Zerg, or try to take out a fort, get killed a bunch of times, then go back to Xping.

For me it's a combination of 2 of the possibilities.  It's exploration with the opportunity for PVP.  I like the idea of going into the wide world, finding new places, killing new mobs and always knowing that behind every turn I could find someone that will try and do me harm.

This way it's a lot more real.  There might be thieves and pirates about.  There might be good/evil people depending on your alignment that are allied against you for whatever reason.  It makes the game world feel more alive.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

I Play for PVP. I could care less if there were any monsters in the game at all. I could care less if there was a storyline, or quests. I try to level soley  from the start on killing other players. I only do the other stuff in order to obtian skills/ weapons that I cannot obtain from killing players.  When I actually do quests  I don;t even watch the cinemematics, or read the npc text.. I try to do it as fast as possible in order to get it over with because npcs are boring.  When I am not in the mood for pvp, I don;t want to kill monsters either.. I would rather do non combat related skills instead, but is very hard to find in most games these days, so I don;t bother playing the game if I am not in the mood to kill someone.

XPing and Questing are the same to me.  I like both.  I am easy going, hardly see the difference.  I don't even know which option I click in your pool anymore LOL.

All of it is fun... but PVP wins out. Particularly because of all the other stuff.

For example, I could log onto a server and play some BF2 or CSS or UT.... a static little battleground scenario doing capture the flag or rescue hostages, and it's fun, sure. But it gets a little predictable after a while; same old thing over and over.  The only variance is in the strategy used by the two parties. Once you've played through them enough, it starts to get a little boring.

But in an MMO, you got hundreds of people with different motives (be best crafter, level fast, have most money, largest political base, etc). PvP in that scenario makes the world dynamic, unpredictable.

So I enjoy pvp in an MMO because I can:

    - harass that quester, making it hard for him to finish his quest. Providing a dynamic and unpredictable element that requires some other dynamic, unplanned response.

    - protect that other person getting harassed... like a hero swooping in to save the day. Refusing the coin because I have a greater reward in heaven.  lol

    - form and inspire a coo to take over a guild. Or form and run a guild based on a constitution with elections, inspiring the whole server. Or maybe if the mechanics allow, just pulling a Napoleon and taking over the whole place.

    - and probably the most suspenseful and fun, sneaking around in areas too hard for me because of all the evil pvp players out there. You might think I'm crazy with this point, but I actually get more out of the suspense of being the weakest in an area, rather just killing everything else that moves with ease. (probably why the Thief series of games was my favorite as well)

Trading for me in EvE online.

But if you kept reading and saw the next point, your experience with me might be that I'm the hero swooping down to rescue you in such cases, expecting nothing in return but friendly conversation.

Games are all about the dynamics and what could or could not happen. If you want a static completely-predictable game, you might want to consider tic-tac-toe. The worst that could happen there is maybe a heckler could scream obscenities at you and cause you to make a bad move, and you end up watching that twinkie you bet get eaten by your opponent.... still too risky?

I ended up being unsure about whether to choose PvP or Guild Activities, finally settled for Guild Activities. I simply enjoy running around killing stuff, or other stuff, with guys you know. Guild Activities include everything from organized PvP and PvE to running around naked and screaming stupid stuff so I suppose it's the funniest one.

I had to go for PvP Group and Solo. The fact i can kill someone from Germany or Ireland or any other place miles away is fantastic. And you know whats even better... theres nothing they can do about it muhaha.

But really, PvP is amazing. Especially grouped. I love my old WSG/AB Premades and the Lineage2 battles. Though equally i do love grouping PvE (EQ1 style).

I like grouping. If I'm doing something in a group with friends, that's when I have the most fun. I like the idea of raiding, but I haven't really done it much. I don't like PuGing quite as much as organized groups. I don't mind solo grinding, especially if it's to finish a quest. PvP can be very fun, I had a blast in the 40-49 bracket in WoW playing WSG games. I really like exploring the world and seeing everything. But I must say that the most satisfying feeling in any RPG I've played was killing bosses. The more I knew about a boss, the more I wanted to kill it. The cooler a boss is, the better.

What I don't like is farming, getting ganked, and trying to organize PuGs.

pvp.. good pvp is the only thing that makes a game last imo.. i mean it can be fun to do quests w/ friends and stuff but it gets old.. especially when u have 2 grind solo for 70-80 lvls before u can play w/ anyone

Crafting, deffinatly. The game's crafting mechanics and it's depth are what attract me in the first instance in a game and often determine wether I will continue to pay or not.

Next to that it will have to be RP, trade and Realm vs Realm.

  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613

exploration and exploitation of found mechanics(legal ones).  nothing quite wins out like being one of the few people who know something, and it really pisses of achievers and PvP when you show it off to them.

shame internet guides ruin so much now days.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

This is why people complain about games being grindfests because devs know that Xping is more important than questing.  Devs can make games with no quests and just xping and the xpers would be happy and they can make games with just PVP and the PVPers will be happy, no need for a storyline.  Get XP while PVPing and both might be happy.

I like questing, but only good quests.  not kill 100 of this or get 1000 bones from that.  Most games though don't have the real questing yet.  Hopefully soon.
