....but you had to start totally from scratch...
Would you come back, or would you stomp your feet and crybecause you had to start over?
What if they did this, but reverted to the original Jedi unlocking system (i.e. you basically have to grind through all the professions and you'd have permadeath)

It would be cool, but I don't think it would work. I don't think a good number of vets would come back just because of SOE.
I think they blew that window and it is too late.
fishermage.blogspot.com
It's way too late for this. Not many would return. Only thing left for SWG is lights out.
SWG? Pull the plug already!
I won't come back no matter WHAT server they offer until John Smedley has been fired and there are pictures posted of security escorting him out.
What form of Pre-CU, whether I can have my old toons back or start over, that's all irrelevant. I do not and WILL NOT trust SOE until the prime evil is gone.
^^ That said...
The ONLY way I'd ever come back is if they released the CURB (what was supposed to be before the CU, the fixes that I PAID FOR!) on fresh brand new virgin servers. And that's it.
Other than that, there isn't enough money to bring me back to that bastard child of Nancy MacIntyre and Julio Torres. No thanks, I'd rather play Pong. At least that game has some depth and strategy.
SWG? Pull the plug already!
The problem of course is the trust issue.
One of the things about SWG is you can't rely on the management or developers understanding that just because they can make radical changes in their product, it's not a very good idea to do so, because players want stability...not just in the computing sense of the word (the servers just work when you want to play) but in the game design sense. SWG has a long history of just wiping away player achievement via nerfs in a cavalier manner.
Why should players invest time in a virtual world where all they've accomplished is wiped out on a whim of some arrogant developer in Austin? SWG was a hobby for me, and I don't like to see what I've built with such care and love be casually destroyed because some idiot in Austin thinks it would be "cool" to do so.
The defense of the NGE is always "something needed to happen to stop the bleeding", but the thing that needed to happen was to stabilize the game, fix the bugs, add content, iron out the imbalances. Totally revising the game from a skill system to a class system, and adding the artificiality of levels to make it easier for lazy devs to work on the game was not the solution, mainly because in doing so you destabilize the design of the game, and you lose trust.
SOE can't be trusted not to do something stupid. Again.
Besides, there's the problem of a preCU server being the only one "heavy" that would make Smedley's brainchild, the NGE, look very bad indeed. That's always been an issue wth classic servers...the NGE servers would continue to be ghost towns while the servers with the terrible game with too much reading and Uncle Owen would be crowded.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
Once a denizen of Ahazi
F%¤# it... ehhh...i whould go back
man, get over it.. post post about, would u go back if they opened a pre server, yes some would, and some wouldt
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
we all talk a lot of crap but i bet the server would explode from 200k trying to log on at once...
arguing with a corporate fanboi is like teaching special education.
even if you teach him something...at the end of the day he's still retarded.
The problem with a post like this is:
People don't just answer for themself. They make broad sweeping statements that no one can prove or disprove.
1) The server would explode (I'd probably lean that way)
2) Not many would come back (even if true you can't prove it..)
Then you toss in the fact its probably never going to happen... and its pointless.
However, as asked if ONLY answered on a personal level its more like an informal poll...
When I started reading how Haden Blackman gave a speech about LEC starting to work on cross platforming back in 2005... as a general statement.
Thought about how many people said the NGE felt like a possible console port.. and there was that book that kept showing up on Amazon.com...
Oh if you didn't read it.. it was at GDC in the last few days.. of course he was just talking in general and mostly about The Force Unleashed.
Anyway that pretty much sealed the deal for me that we won't see any Pre-CU official(tm) servers.
Anyway as to the OP...
Yes I would go back with all of my accounts (we had 9).
Why?
There isn't any game like Pre-CU on the market... and there isn't anything coming anytime soon that will be like it either.
All the beta's I'm currently in... are also letting me know.. that I would go back to a Pre-CU server.
I used to drop skills and rebuild every other week.. so starting over wouldn't even make me blink.
/wave
Yes i would go back and despite unlocking jedi and such it would have to be a clean server.i wouldnt want all this CU and NGE crap floating around in game. like now the NGE is loaded with a bunch of PRE-CU and CU crap wich makes the game look sloppy.
As for people returning i would say that they would in rather large numbers as well. there just isnt a game thats out that even comes close to the PRE-CU its WoW clone after WoW clone and really im even more tired of that formula now than i was back in the Pre CU days.
And really theres alot of big talk here about never going back but they would end up caving in im sure after all theyre only posting on a game thats 4 years old and the NGE went ive 2 years ago and they still cant let it go.
Starting over from scratch is the only way a pre-cu server would work. To expand on what was already said, can you imagine the nightmare of respecing things back to pre-cu? Things have been through stat changes too many times. For characters, a level x=y amount of skill points spent might work but think about all the junk people have. And the time period in which looted objects outranked crafted items. Along with the old CDEF noobie weapon suddenly having level 70+ stats on it. How do you replace it? Go with the name and end up with a bunch of noobie trash in people's inventories or go with the stats and replace it with a stat equivalent item. Also, the economy was destroyed during the CU/NGE. Things that once ate up the credits stopped doing so (decay, shuttle tickets, rent....yes, rent may still exist but if the purpose of a building was to keep a town alive it could sit there forever as condemned) and credits were a lot easier to make in CU (remember the days when the credits for a mission from terminal were split amongst the group, then recall CU hitting and the credits listed becoming a per-person reward instead). If people were allowed to bring CU/NGE earned credits into a pre-cu server, the economy would be off to a bad start. Those who did server transfer would automatically become the "haves" while those who started new or tried the game for the first time would become the "have nots."
I'd go back
Best way would be to have all new server too, because it's been so long I'd have to learn the game again anyway.
i would not go back for a couple of reasons
1. unless they can assure me with a legal contract that the pre-cu will not magically change into NNGE (newer new game engine) or anything that does not resemble what it was at publish 9. looking at their history, i think that will never happen (look at vanguard, they NGEd their asses like they did to SWG)
2.they give me back the money they owe me (for canceling the same account 3 times and still getting billed for it.
3. there will be a certain war hapening, the same war we saw when these MMORPG had 1 room for vets and NGE current. people will be making characters on the pre-cu to mess around and vice verca.
4. hologrind will still be there as will the jedi
5. they are liars and will do anything for my money, so they will not get any of it every again unless they come up with the miracle anti aging potion of immortality that actually works AND that it comes with a free robot servant that does all the tedious work in my place AND that can talk trash to random people in the street.
I would.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
QFT. Hell, I didn't even play it THEN and I know I'd totally be there on launch day.
For those of you who want a pre-cu server, go to swganh.com . There are a few groups working on the coding to get swg back to the way it was before everything got bunged up by SOE so we can get our own private server up and running. right now there are about 25000 members of supporting communities waiting for the coding to be finished and once thats done we can get back to the fun we used to have. also check out truegalaxies.com.
With that being said, I wouldn't go back to a SOE run pre-cu server either. I wouldn't trust them to leave it alone.
Basically I have accepted that the old game is gone. All I can do now is make sure that people know the truth about SOE and their business practices.
Others have said what I'm thinking. The pre-cu server window has passed for me. At this point it would be too little, too late. Also, I think many hit on the most important issue for me--trust. With Smed still runnin' the show, I don't trust him not to pull the rug out from under me yet again. He's done that so many times to players now it's no wonder no one wants to invest any time or energy into SWG. I've watched all those Charlie Brown shows, and Chuck was a fool to keep trying to kick that football.
The recent b.s. with Vanguard has led me to lose all faith that SOE can be trusted to respect player investments. For me now, if it says SOE on the box, it may as well say "despair of hope, all ye who enter here."
Also, tbh the history of SWG shows that if they did ever try a classic server, they'd probably screw it up and get it wrong to start with. Then as they tried to fix it (or should I say IF they tried to fix it) they'd break one or two things for every one thing they fixed.
I'm sorry but this company has screwed up a few dozen times too many with the StarWars IP. I think it's time to give it to someone that can be trusted to do a better job.
They are thinking about it,to a lesser degree for Vanguard
I don't think they are capable of doing it.Honestly,I don't think they have people capable of
1. Making or reverting back to pre-cu
2. Of fixing the bugs it had then
but if they could, and did, yes,I would go back.
there's not a damn thing out there that even comes close to pre-cu SWG..Hell yes it had bugs, but I loved it anyway, and screw the jedi, not those that played one,I never wanted one,at any time.Got mega wealthy from people grinding for them tho .
I enjoyed just hunting and exploring with some friends or finding rescources for my crafter.Heck,we never even had Doc buffs, ofcorse we didn't actively pvp.
I'd come back and I think we all would.
My simple question is this...
For everyone who says the "window has passed" or that they wouldn't come back period.
What game are you playing that is skill based, player economy and doesn't revolve around exotic raiding loot?
Because the only way the window will *close* for me... is when I see that game.
So where are you all hiding?
Not trying to be offensive.
Just all I keep seeing is Level/uber loot... raid grinding crap. Sure I can take a bit of playing my Fury in EQ2 but my guild about has to pay me to activate and raid...
The few skill based MMO's I've seen coming up.. well I try to have faith.. but small.. underfunded companies in todays market.. my realist mind says.. don't get my hopes up.
Then again.. its why I don't see a pre-cu server happening regardless.
I'd come back, open two accounts - one to go for Jedi and the other as a support character. But no 'permadeath'. It doesn't work and it's just porn for the anti-Jedi crowd. There were better and fairer penalty systems.
Hell will freeze over before I ever spend another dime on a product associated with Sony.
No, and I don't think they should......every game has it's time, and SWG will be gone within 2 years.
