What game to play while waiting?

I know I've seen a couple threads about this, but they seem to mostly be lost in the piles and the search feature wasn't bring them up for me (I blame myself for lack of knowledge how to word it correctly to bring them up).

Several games only had minor things that were putting me off from playing them more (LoTRO for example), and I was wondering as a community, what games are people still playing to help pass the time?

I do get the feeling quite a few people will say DAoC, my questions are this:

Is there a way to change how to view, or get the cursor?

Are there updated graphics for it (EQ had Scars of Velius)?

At what level do things get interesting for RvR?

What servers still have communities of leveling people after so long?

What I have tried goes as follows:

Muds (several, and I still play some from time to time, mostly Materia Magica)

EQ (Played til GoD, the endless grind killed it for me, and the money costs).

EQ2 (Grind of EQ times 2, which fits the name)

WoW (Season 2-3 Arena gear killed it for me)

LoTRO (Played til 16 on 2 people, then lost interest)

TR (Played til 30 on 2 people, then it lost interest)

DAoC (Graphics were kind of low, but the big thing that killed it was the view controls. Having to hold down the mouse to get a cursor was a p.i.t.a., made it to around 10)

I've played others (E&B, EVE, etc), so you get the idea. I also took several breaks and played shooters to help keep the genre fresh (TFC2, Bioshock, CoD4, and thinking about getting Crysis).

Guild Wars for me. Love the tactical choices you have to make when only having access to 8 skills. You have to unlock some skills before you can start PvPing, but after that you can just create a PvP character which starts off at the maximum level and you're free of to create the gear for him, he also got access to all skills you've unlocked. I don't know if you'll like having access to only 8 skills and being forced to carefully consider which ones to use and how to lay out the attributes, but once you get the hang of it I can tell you it's damn funny and challenging.

I looked at guild wars a few years ago when it was first coming out. At the time I was still content with WoW. I notice they now have 4 "chapters" of Guild Wars. I am wondering though, how much of a disadvantage would I be at if I just got the first one and leveled to 20 with that? (I believe 20 is the max level)

I'm just kiling time with World of Warcraft. I suggest just playing something on a consol for a couple of months.

  • sirslayerrsirslayerr Member Posts: 128

Tempting, but I sold my consoles and bought a better gaming rig since there wasn't really much of interest on them.

As for WoW, it is an okay game and I'm glad you still enjoy it, although for someone such as myself... I played from Release (Nov 04) until the end of last year (Dec 07). I got 3 characters to 70, and another one close. The main aspect of the game which I enjoyed after all that time was PvP (which is why I rolled on a PvP server from the start). With working 50-60 hours a week at times, and working night shifts, I lacked the time to keep up with the ever growing arena items and soon it was just too annoying to try running around in most of S1, some S2, and getting hit by people with better pvp gear and equal skill. I'm good, but a full set of resilience is hard to beat out. :-(

I'm playing EVE while I wait. Probably not for everyone, but I wanted to check out the graphical update, and I got hooked.

Anything is better than hitting the refresh button on the betacenter a dozen times a day!

    don't play any mmorpg meanwhile....

do something else other than play games perhaps, enjoy some shows or something or re-aquire a console  ;)

I would say instead of starting a new MMO while waiting, get caught up on some of the great single player games on PC (or 360/PS3 if ya have em) or grab HL ep2 and play some portal and harrass people in TF2.

No real sense in getting into an MMO that you might have to pay for a few months while waiting for WAR. Offline gaming can help pass the time, and you could probably borrow a few games from friends/family.

1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

I'm more or less in the same postion as SirSlayerr...

I'm playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Never Winter Nights ( Diamond edit.) + several modules downloaded from a fan site.

I was playing F2P 9Dragons but it's über grind fest (and being 220 max cap or something... It's just crazy and not worth it albeit I enjoyed the game and it's pretty good for an Asian - read grind fest-item mall shoping - game.

I also tried Dungeon Runners, it's fun, community is pretty alrgiht - you can choose to pay 5 $. You've got several servers (there's one PVP) to choose from and you don't have to create a new character each time - it remains the same... But, and there is always a "but",  it's pretty much a farm fest game and reaching lvl cap 100 is not hard (might be good, might be bad that really depends on you).

So like someone said earlier... might be better to stick with "regular" games - that's what I've ended up doing. Oh I also got this thing to play very old games from late 80s to 90s.

Anyway if someone here points out to something worth trying...

    Cheers and good luck SirSlayerr.

I was playing DDO for a while but its gear raid grind at end game kinda irked me so for the sake of coming back to MMOs when WAR releases I've decided to take an MMO break.   Its good to do that sometimes helps you sort of clear the toxins that build up when you get burned by a game.

For now I'm sticking to my Wii, PS2, and regular PC games.   I'm currently invested in a campaign against the Nazis in Company of Heroes and I'm thinking about picking up The Witcher.   The Witcher is supposed to be a seriously long ass RPG but I could use something to kill my time hehe.

I feel like I'm in MMO purgatory.

  • sirslayerrsirslayerr Member Posts: 128

I agree on the fact that I shouldn't get tangled up with another MMO, but I can't really find much else of interest.

On the "non-game" comment, I live in an oil-boom town in the mid-west. The town has a total population of 15,000, and the only "big store" is 1 wal-mart which never has anything worth purchasing since I can always find it cheaper online. As for shows or etc, there are 2 movie theaters in town, that run for 2 shows a night (few screens in each one, they run from 7 to 11, normally). Also, the nights I work, I do 8-12 hour shifts (mostly 12's).

As for single player games, I've recently played D2+LoD, Starcraft+Broodwar, Bioshock, CoD4, Warcraft+Frozen throne, and a few others which escape me. I've also played those online, along with TR, LoTRO, EVE, and DAoC (some of those on trial accounts), along with DoD, CS, HL2, TFC2, etc. I've been thinking about trying out Crysis

My biggest problem with single player games is I'm very good at gaming, and it doesn't usually take long to beat them. :-/ HL took me 3 days the first time I played it, OP took 1 day, Bioshock took 3 days, CoD4 took 3 days, and etc. Also, when playing through again, I remember almost everyone (where the power ups are, where the bad guys are, etc) so it makes for a kind of "bleh" play-through.

For the most part I play ES4 - Oblivion, but this weekend I am planning on resubscribing to Planetside.

So if anyone else is joining up on Planetside give me a shout.

The witcher... It's not bad, as long as you really like point and click. You click to attack, then click each time your sword goes red with flames, then wait for it to go red again. The only things you actually control through the fights (besides the basic click) are the stances (fighting a fast person, strong, or a group of people), and alchemy potions. I liked the story, but I didn't play that game through to the end. The "click, click, click, hold down click to run, click, click, click, run, click click" was really boring after a while.

I miss being able to play Doom and Duke 3D... Darn you XP and Vista for not liking the older games!

Eh I'm old school ... I come from the days of Baldur's Gate &  Diablo 1 and older games ... so point and click doesn't irk me its just one of two different natural ways to game.    I do love FPS movement better but eh whatever :)

Hmm. Mo worries there. I use DOS emulators to play them. VDMSound and DOSBox, I'm sure you've heard at some point about them. Anyway there's Doom II in OpenGL - meaning totally revamped graphics, imagine DOOM II with so much better look. There's also Hexen (if my memeory doesn't fail - I'm sure I have it somewhere)  and Duke 3D on OpenGL - just google it - I got to go out (already late actually - just quickly responding to you) otherwise I would post the links here.

I'll check this thread later if no links are in I'll just post them - anyway it should be easy to find .

    Cheers!

Yea I have been playing Planetside as well waiting on either a Beta invite or just plain ole retail!

    Im Emerald VS.

Planetside is still doing fairly well, from about 5-11pm are the best times for high pops. Other then that you still find decently large skirmishes but you wont even get near a pop lock until later on in the night, I havent seen an actual pop lock however in a long time. Last time I saw it get really close was over christmas break when we actually got to the single digits left on the cont.

Regardless the battles are still intense and completely worth resubbing.

in DAoC if you had to hold your mouse to get the pointer you had mouse look on, which is a toggle.

But I am playing Savage 2.

    Turn off the mouse look.

I had that turn on one time after going link dead and it drove me nuts because there this is changed via a keybinding and there wasn't a key bound to it.

Yeah there is a graphic update in Labyrinth of the Minotaur

35-39 Battleground does sometime have people in it but for the most part nowadays the RvR is at level 50.

Leveling is a bit different in this game to others there isn't the grind like there use to be and most people tend to just find groups to Powerlevel in this isn't the same context as Powerleveling in games like most games where someone plays your account I higher the mob killed the more xp gained and level gaps  between players doesn't start to reduce xp between players like other games, so low level chars can group with high level chars and get more xp as the high level chars kill stuff.

As for servers your major choices would be Bossiney cluster the classic servers, Devon or Killibury cluster normal Servers with ToA Bonuses, just look at the right side of http://www.camelotherald.com/ to see the population of the different clusters and the servers on those clusters.

    @ Elven

I don't mind point and click, it's just in Diablo for example, you could change up what the clicks did. The Witcher runs on an auto-attack cycle that you either click attack or block.

    @ Grom

I see, I'll do some investigating. I still think Duke 3D was one of the more fun games I've played, just because it was entertaining as hell.

    @ Kintrik

Thanks for the heads up about that. I didn't toggle it, it just happened when I logged out then back in. I tried looking for a way to toggle it off, but I didn't find one, so I figured it was innate. :-(

You want something that hints at being an MMO till War comes out? I second the motion on Guild Wars. It's a free sub. Can't go wrong there. Pvp ain't bad either the way it's done. Team based pvp in the form of gvg or Guild vs Guild. It's an easy pickup. You go through the pve and you'll be rdy to start the pvp or do them both at the same time.

Sure, to start off you'll be behind the power curve in the amount of skills you will own, but you unlock them for your account so any pvp character you create will have them. It's an easy game to finish (by finish I mean every chapter has the storyline that resembles being played like it were a single player game which is why many consider not a real MMO)and get caught up with a lot of choice on how your character is built skill wise. But being able to be good at those choices is where the hard part comes in. Some have it, some don't.

I personally am a fan of this game because of the way classes don't counter each other, particular skills do. Ie; A monk places an enchantment on an assasin to give hit points back to the assasin eveytime it's hit. A necro, or mesmer could have brought a hex that shatters enchantments. Cool downs are basically nil which makes for a strategic fast paced fight. No cool down is really more than 60sec.

Interupts, enchantments, hexes, conditions, rituals are all very clear cut. By that I mean find your target and be able to see exactly what that person uses when they use it. Makes for finding out how to break an opposing character down or opposing team for that matter.

A monk may be the greatest at healing, but with the hybrid play...an elementalist or ritualist may be some hidden healers on an opposing squad.

I don't really play anymore though as I am now back to WoW getting geared up. I can forewarn you though, if your a fan of movements such as swimming and jumping, and hell...flying, you won't be able to do that stuff in Guild wars. After awhile tho, you'll get past that playing with what they give you.

You won't be at any disadvantage.  The other Chapters are like addons.  Guild Wars Prophicies(I can't spell this word right!) is the best for new players.  Factions goes by REALLY fast.  Although in factions you get to 20 the fastest but thats better for dudes who already know how to play and our interested in a new char.  Nightfall is slower but not as slow as guild wars.

Guild Wars gives you the most time to get used to the gameplay and it has a lot of quests that give you skills.

Eye of the North is an expansion for lvl 20 people.  If you have anymore questions you can message me ingame or inforum.  My ign (in game name) is Jarnek Dragonspirit.

    @ GeneralC

Thank you for the in-depth responses. I don't think I want to dedicate that much time into the game though. :-/ It's kind of a toss up right now between GW and DAoC, and GW looks like it would be more friendly to my random time allotments.

    @ Sovren1

Thanks, and those things like jumping and flying aren't really all that important. I only go to those in games like WoW when I have absolutely nothing else better to do. :-)

    @ HelloKirby

Always good to know. I might try and get a hold of you for those if they come up. One thing I will ask on here though, I was looking over the basic class combinations, and it looks like a Ranger/Necro would be fun for a first character. I also read though that I wouldn't  be well liked for it. :-(

Awesome, I was planning on joining Emerald VS when I get it installed. Heard VS had lowest pop.

I'll have to look you up when I get things running. What is your in game name? Same as here?
