Not having the time or money to wade through mounds of MMO's, I've tried a handful including CoH, GW, AO, and EQ2. None really ever kept me interested like WoW.
Granted, even with WoW, I was in on the Beta, but stayed away when it was released as I was reluctant to go back to a monthly fee game again. Eventually, a friend got the rpg bug and decided that WoW was it. I got burned out close to the point of quitting when a reroll on a new server solved my boredom issues. We've been having a blast since.
Maybe something will eventually overtake WoW. It's possible. At least eventually. I'd almost guess it will be overtaken by the next mmo from Blizz.
Many MMOs beat it on various specific points however. For example; CoX is better for the casuals, for the customisation, for grouping and for soloing. However, CoX is horrible on pretty much everything else...especially on the achieving department.
EQ would be better for raiding and for "deepness", however it would be behind for pretty much everything else.
Again, WoW is the less bad. Not the better. And on any precise topic, another MMO beats it. Since I can bear some critical core design weakness still present in WoW, I can't even consider playing it. Raiding with better rewards? Not on my server! :P WoW flaws, by been polished to an extreme, are extremely sharp and painful.

Everquest SUCKED, the classes were gimped, at least 80% of them were, and the game was a giant snore fest. WoW rules and stands as the best game ever!
Gimped as in you had to group and socialize to progress? Then yes. No it isn't a shallow easy solo game like WoW is. When you make a game that a monkey can progress in then you get an audience of the same quality. WoW has the worst community of all games I have ever played.
By the way, WoW's classes could never touch the classes of EQ. In EQ your class felt very unique and special compared to other classes. In WoW since everyone has to be able to solo, well you end up with less distinctions. Groups in EQ felt alot more fun with the better gaming audience and the way the classes worked together to progress. I guess you could say every monster you fought your level was like an elite monster or higher in WoW. You also didn't have devs leading you around in a linear fashion like lemmings, you just went out and explored with friends and made your own adventures. It was much more freedom to that game and as games of these types go on they keep taking more and more away.

Gimped as in you have to group grind with horrendous camping to advance. To get decent gear, you have to rotate/camp with 50 other people for a rare drop. When I was playing EQ, I had once spent 6 hours camping for a robe with NOTHING to show. During that 6 hours, we may get to kill the mob like 3-5 times. Now that is not fun.
And there is nothing wrong with an less time-demanding game. There is nothing "difficult" about camping in EQ. Anyone who can stand the boredom can do it.
6 hours? I once camped Stormfeather for 73 hours straight ..... TWICE First time for a Shaman
WoW did a lot of things right and still does but as the OP said its gets very repetative and annoying. I now take things like a quest log, faction reports, pvp score display and many more for granted. Even that yellow ! above a quest givers head for granted and find it difficult to get into a games that lack most of WoW's functions.
I've been spoiled and its haunting me to this day as i struggle to find another game as, whats the word? Engrosing? as WoW was when i first played it.
Hoping darkfall lives up to expectations.

But Warhammer online is gonna be the best game im ever gonna play.

You prove my point. 6 hours is the limit for me in many ways including my own patience. I will never play a game that is SO boring that requires you to camp for 73 hours.
BTW, there are chinese MMORPGs (Zu online, for example) that will even make it easier than WOW. For example, you can just click on a link in the quest log and your char will go to the quest NPC/location automatically.
Tried it, played it and its certainly not the best. Its endgame is as dull as watching paint dry and its pvp is boring. PVP servers is a gankfest, nothing more. No largescale wars or any of that sort going on.
Nope, for an mmo vet, WoW certainly not the best. It do have its highpoints, but they keep getting lower all the time. The old mmo's kept me longer, AO/EQ/SWG and so on...Especially AO. It was THE scifi mmo years back. Its still good, but players are turned away from the graphics mostly it seems nowadays. Funcom working on a dx9 engine for AO though.
Played Wow- left Wow, tried many others- came back to Wow, left Wow waited for others- tried them, back to Wow. Does this sound familiar? It does? Truth is- Wow gets repetative- can be annoying - is at times DULL, but still unbeaten by other MMORPGs. By design, but probably mostly accident - Blizzard got lots of the game right (not all), but enough to make people want to come back, once they have had a rest. I await War- but something tells me- it wont be long before people who leave Wow for War will be back. You've tried the rest Wow is the best !
First let me state that I've played WOW off and on since release. I've also played just about every other major titled MMO ever made. WOW is good but to say its best is overrated simply because its not best at anything. Its a jack of all trades wannabe game.
WOW does not have and never has had a mature community of players. In fact it really has no community feel at all. Why? It's simple. People don't need other people in this game to achieve success in reaching top level like games of past. I met alot of great mature people when i played DAOC when it came out. There was great benefit in grouping with a partner or more. Not all could be soloed. Just for kicks i resubscribed to DAOC a few months back.
I made a Lurikeen Ranger from 0 to top level in just over 3 days of decent play. Long ago it would take month or months. I didn't need any help to reach the top in fact i had some of the best gear in the game in one weekend of dragon raids. Whats my point? It's simple they keep pushing games for solo casual play and imo that ruins what the basic concept that a MMO stands for. I can solo mobs 6 levels higher then me in WOW when other games 1-2 levels over would be a certain death wish. Again Easy mode.
Graphics are OK but very cartoonish. I've seen better as well as worse. You want breathtaking graphics play Vanguard or EQ2..
PVP is second rate. It went downhill when they put rules in place in fact it sorta ruined the game adding the honor system making PVP grind based verses decision based. Instead of PVPing for fun they made it into a grind for gear system. That ruined PVP in WOW imo.. Ganking is fun part of playing PVP.
Crafting system in WOW really is secondary and serves no purpose. End game raiding is what its all about. It pretty much has sucked since game release. Its a novelty more then anything else.
AH system was revolutionary.. EQ2 has a nice auction system as well.
I prefer a mature social community. I prefer open world non instanced PVP. I prefer a crafting system whose trades are far superior to any other drop, loot in game which feeds an economy and also players into people who simply want to be tradesmen or women.
So WOW is lacking in alot of things. It has a huge kiddy base . It lacks depth and there is no surprise or discovery in the game ie Thottbot tells all. I remember in DAOC searching for hours trying to find a quest NPC.
WOW is good yes but its far from the best. DAOC PVP is better, EQ2 PVE/PVP is superior to WOW. Both have better crafting and housing.
What greater tribute to free will than the power to question the highest of authority? What greater display of loyalty than blind faith? What greater gift than free will? What greater love than loyalty?
Well.. tried one of WoW's major competitors ; LOTRO and in my opinion I liked WoW better. Fun, accessible abilities I think is a very strong appeal of Blizzard games, and going to a non-Blizzard game it is only too painfully evident finding that missing.
Is WoW the best? Well speaking from experiences I find it pales in comparison to my experience of yesteryear playing Everquest but I would say WoW IS the most well-done and modern mmorpg.
My problem with WoW (and most other MMO's who mirror WoW) is simply you set your toon to auto attack and sit there. who ever does the most damage wins. then you get to mash buttons. thats not really fun for me. In fact if i want a game like that, theres a game called With Your Destiny with a bot built into the game so you can lvl your toons over night.
The only other game i have really found that has a very customizable battles system is DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) Now there is an auto attack buttin in DDO, but you can actually jump around, swinging in cricles taking 5 or 6 mobs down at once, who's AI makes them move back to heal, or run and ring a gong for more allies etc etc.
You can (if you want) self aim your spells. you don't have to target a mob to cast. i love that. its great being able to throw a fireball into a big pile of monsters. You can do the same for archery (though targetting is preferable due to how much the mobs move)
To me battle is what makes or breaks a game. I have recently LEFT DDO due to lack of content and being bored. Another nice thing is how unique each quest is. You actually go into a private instance with your party mates. So there is custom dungeons for each quest. I LOVE that.
I played WoW for about a year and a half. During that time I enjoyed WoW very much. I played in PUGs and with friends and solo.
I also played during the first year and a half from release and the game was much different than what came after or what it is today.
There was world pvp, Battlegrounds was only a discussion and pvp penalties did not exist.
What people seem to totally miss is not so much what WoW did, but how the developers presented it.
Some of the story lines were lame but some were pretty fun and the world pvp at the time was a blast.
It was fun to be the alchemist and supply your group with potions or the tank or rouge or priest or any of the classes.
All the classes IMHO were fun to play and group with. Each brought something unique.
I liked the game because I am not a power gamer. It took me that year and a half just to play a warrior and a priest to level 60. I had alts in the 30s as well but I was not crying that the raid dungeons sucked or were not complete or that my warrior had to fight a fricking paladin FOREVER to kill him.
I didn’t have the opportunity to raid and I expected classes to have strong points and weak points just like an opponent in real life.
So to the question…Is WoW the best? I have to answer with a question. Best in what?
They are/were the best to date in what they did. They developed a diverse, item centric, quest packed game with unique (at the time) presentation of the various classes that have been used one way or another since Rping started.
In the beginning they had (IMHO) a very good start on World PvP only to abandon it for a mini game.
Most other games to date have copied what wow copied; their only downfall is that it is not new to us now because WoW used it all in their game.
It seemed to me that WoW took everything that was being done in other games and combined it (mostly) into one game and presented it in a FUN environment.
Come on, some of those dwarf jokes were funny. Like the one:
“It’s like me father always said…”Shut up and get out”
Just remember majority of WoW players have been playin mmo's < 5 years. Alot of peeps, its their first mmo. Those ppl so afraid of being labled as a noob, lies are then told. Read thru these posts you can figure out who is who. Having said that, its tough to get accurate opinions on the topic. IMHO

WOW fixes all that. It is 100x the game EQ was. It makes grinding more fun by a) eliminating down-time (remember the horrible 10 min sitting regen mana with nothing to do), b) eliminating camping (faster respawn + instances) and c) makes grinding more fun by adding quests.
WOW is also a lot more polished and the attention to details is a lot better than EQ.

If it was so boring as you claim it is, why did you play it for a 'few years' then? When I find a game boring I uninstall it and move on. What you should have written, and what I know is true is that you simply are bored with EQ, having a burnout or similar. Happens to us all. If EQ was good enough to keep you for a few years, its far from boring according to your taste in games.
After checking several games before WoW, i took the plunge. Was there for just over 2yrs before leaving for a 10/11 month break. Been back now for 4mths and to say that BC killed most of the content is true, in fact, if you want to play WoW you MUST buy the expansion as well, else you will find yourself with nothing to do whatsoever as all the old high level instances just dont get used anymore.
Also add to that, much of teh new 5 man instances are also tough to get groups into as well (and there are a pretty fair ammount of new instances). End game instances are what players tend to run now, but i reckon most players havent had a chance at several of them still.
I dont think its goign to be long before i take another break from the game, just deleted 7 characters on dunemaul (from lvl 15-50) got 3 left there, 70 hunter, 61 priest, 60 rogue. Thinking of transfering the rogue to the server i play on now (as the 10 mth absence saw 99.9% of the people i knew leave the server or also quit the game) i went to join the bulk that went to another server and started afresh.
Now you may say why didnt you transfer, simple, it costs 2 mths subscription to transfer a character, also the repiutations on these characters are far far short of what you can do with a new character, e.g these old ones are lucky to have honored status at 60 (and 70), yet by 40 your exalted with most.
I may put the hunter and preiest up for trade or sell them to gold farmers, as i doubt i will play these again. After all my character is a hunter on the other server and annihilates what i played for 2yrs or so in just 3mths.
The game has also become very easy as well, much of the elite mobs have been made normal so you dont require the aid of someone, also from what i hear patch 2.4 is goign to do away with some attunements and keys that were needed in BC instance's. Another damn tonedown.
Can Blizard be doign the same mistake again, putting a 25 man instance in teh game just before releasing an expansion that will surely kill the instance before it even got started (just look at naxaramus).

You are correct WoW is a lot more polished and the gameplay was very grind-based. However, what I'm saying is from my experience the best sense of adventure and memories I had I found in Everquest. WoW to me pales in comparison to that because to me I found WoW and Everquest to be two different games with WoW having more in common with it's battle.net routes of Warcraft and the like(which I am a big fan of incidentally) and Everquest maybe having more in common with a rpg like Morrowind except admittedly with a bit more naff gameplay. WoW is much stronger in gameplay, while to many pre Everquest players Everquest was stronger in immersion and community.

What you should have written, and what I know is true is that you simply are bored with EQ, having a burnout or similar. Happens to us all. If EQ was good enough to keep you for a few years, its far from boring according to your taste in games.

Grammar nazi's. This one is for you.
"You've tried the rest- is Wow the best?"
Yes, it is.
Knock the world right off its feet and straight onto its head.
