MMORPG.com is sad to report the passing of RPG pioneer Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons and the man widely credited as the father of role-playing games.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.
He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.
Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

Farewell mr. Gaygax
You will be remembered by all us geeks
Bummer.
There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.
Goodbye Gary Gygax, my life would be very diferent without your genial creation that started all the other RPG and all the fantastic universes we now dwell online.
I was lucky enough to have played i one of his games at a UK GenCon a few years ago now. To have met him was a great honour, to be invited to a game was awesome.
Truly a loss to the gaming world, where would we be without him?
Gary, keep on rolling those dice.
(kneels before the fallen)
Thank you for a lot of things, the games, the fun, the companionship, the exp....... so many things.
Farewell Gary.
The DM has died.
LONG LIVE THE DM!
Truly someone who helped expand many lives with his games. I am sad to hear of his passing but hope his legacy will live on forever more.
Yeah I think alot of our lives would be different without Mr Gygax. My father started me on D&D when I was 8.. yeah 8 who does that to their kid lol Good times RIP Gary
T'is a sad day for gamers all over the World today. Mr. Gygax and his creation helped many an awkward teen get past those dreadful years and opened them up to worlds limited only by their imaginations. I raise a glass to you sir, and wish you fair journeys to the lands beyond us.
Godspeed Gary Gygax, now the true fantasy begins.
Dear Mr. Gygax,
Thanks for everything you have meant for this, still developing, industry.
Your work, no, your masterpieces are among, if not, the greatest ever.
For you have set the first steps for most of the games we play.
I give you a salute.
You will be missed, but never forgotten.
Respects,
PenTa.
Goodbye Gary Gygax,
You Gave me worlds to explore as real as my Imagenation could make them I will miss you
Truely one of the few people who influenced people near and far, not matter their race color or creed.
He shall be missed dearly
This man is a legend and will always be remembered.
ANyone in DDO know if Turbine is doing any special tribute?
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Farewell Gary!! Without you I would have never found the best friends in the world, let alone find somewhere to fit in. Thanks to the things you did I managed to pass my math classes, and story probelms were always easier to figure out when converted into D&D terms. You will be sorely missed.
Grazie per tutto quello che hai fatto...eri un genio...il mondo che hai creato resterà per sempre...
Farewell Mr. Gygax
Thank You and Goodbya Gary
Thank you Mr. Gygax, for all the fun, the teachings, the help dealing with adolescence, for opening our minds and hearts.
One of the few REAL shakers of the times. His works have been so influential. Hard to put in words what I feel now for the passing of THE Dungeon Master.
69 is still young but Gary leaves a behind great creative work. Very inspiring.
Wow. That is very saddening, we really wouldn't be here today without him. Gary was to gaming what robert johnson was to blues, or elvis to rock and roll, etc if you get my point. Genius.
One of the big names in the world of fantasy. He may not have written the epic novels of Tolkien or Howard, but he spawned an entire revolution in the fantasy genre with D&D. Sorry to see a legend go.
Without D&D and those odd shaped dice, my life would have been drastically different, and probably not nearly as fun.
You sparked the minds of authors, artists, game developers, film makers, TV show producers and many, many more - and you did it with a genial smile. You did good, Mr G.
this is a sad day. one of the fathers to fantasy games has passed on to the heaven of the 12 sided die.
you will always be in my memory.
