Wow. This really didnt hit me until I thought back to the first time I rolled up a D&D character back in the late 80s.

I have been a long devoted fan, whether it was the original or any of the multitude of games, pen and paper (Marvel Super Heroes 20+ years and still going), or console/online games, I have been touched by the mark of Mr. Gygax and it has left an indelible mark on me forever.

So long "Original DM" you will be missed.

Mad "Sammy Sosa" home run celebration chest pounds for you.

    The Empty Chair

    Eulogy for a Gamer

    There is an empty chair,

    at the table this day.

    A hallowed place where,

    a friend once played.

    The roll of his dice,

    my ears long to hear.

    Or perhaps it would suffice,

    if he should suddenly appear.

    With character sheet in hand,

and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share.

    All his friends would stand,

as he sat in the empty chair.

    I hear his voice a-callin’,

and it ties my heart in a knot.

For he cries, “Though a comrade has fallen,

You must play for those who cannot.”

We conquered worlds on the run,

he and I in the name of fun.

And as others may come and go,

I make both both friend and foe.

But what I long for most,

is our past now long a ghost.

God, I remember my first game of D&D.

Came from a box and played it over a cousin's house. Just a simple dungeon, some giant rats and spiders but after that evening I was hooked on the idea of adventurous possibility.

Thank you Mr. Gygax. You will indeed be missed.

I remember my parents receiving the D&D Boxed set at their store back in 1978, back when the Worlds of Greyhawk and Blackmoor were contained within the covers of two thirty-odd page soft-cover books, and there were the barest of fundamental rules laid out for the person who would run the game...allowing them to journey to places envisioned in their most idyllic dreams or darkest nightmares, to face creatures both faire and foul, and to live the lives of their character as they saw fit, yet be held accountable by the Dungeon Master for their actions.

In many respects, the games I played in and the campaigns that would follow over the next 30 years were in many ways dress rehearsals for life in the "Real world".  Without this game, and the interactions and relationships I've developed over the years with other gaming enthusiasts in all the different genres that evolved from that humble little box have lasted these many years, I would not be the man I am today.   Now that my son has picked up the torch and is playing, it becomes a tool for me to teach him those difficult moral lessons that all of us parents wrestle with, by illustrating the consequences of ones actions in a controlled environment, so he learns the lessons we all need to learn about right and wrong, good vs. evil, and how the actions of one person can shape the lives of all the people around them, for good or ill.

Mr. Gygax, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you have given us, and allowed us to give ourselves in the process of living within your worlds...

We shall always remember you.  Save a seat for me in Valhalla at Odin's table for me...

Without a doubt, this man is the grandfather of RPGs as we know it today. Without his influence I doubt that the genre could've developed as far as it has. It really is a testament to his influence, capabilities, and genius that the RPG genre has grown so large. Thank Gary Gygax for all of the wonderful things you've brought to us. Gamers everywhere should thank you. We owe a lot to you. Goodluck in your newest campaign setting :)

It's a testament to the far-reaching contributions of his creation when you consider the game mechanics that came out of it - Hit Points. Character Classes. Levels. Stats. Just to name some.

How many video game RPGs on consoles and PC in America, Asia and Europe have used these mechanics over the years?   And they used them because they worked.  All thanks to D&D

Dungeons and Dragons was the first roleplaying game I ever played, having badgered my brothers into letting me join them when I was 10. They later quit, I kept at it. I'm 30 today, and Mr. Gygax has been a major inspiration to me in many ways. He was to roleplaying games what men like Newton or Fermat were to science. Maybe not the final word, but the foundation he laid is and will remain the hill upon which any later game has to stand.

Rest in peace, Mr. Gygax. You had an effect on many lives, a good one. And that's as much as any human can hope to achieve, in my opinion.
