    srohek,

What I posted was based on MY experiences NOT yours.

You didn't even offer any valid evidence why you THINK I am wrong.

    Let's just agree to disagree.

    Sundays i like exploring
    Mondays i like crafting
Tuesday i like to hunt mobs
Wednsday i like to chat with guildies
    Thursday i like to pvp
Fridays i like to just stand around in the town square, naked, while I shout obscenities
Saturdays i like to go on raids

PvP just adds another layer of things you can do, and thusly extends the life of a game for many people, myself included. It's no different that killing mobs, or more precisely, dieing to a mob. If nothing else, dieing in pvp doesn't cost you a loss of xp, or items in most games, so it actually hurts less than a pve death.

I was never what you wanted, I could never never please.
I swallowed all our sorrow in the midst of my disease.
All my fortunes, all my gains, all the battles I have won...
Now collapsing like the rain, I stand alone, your only son...

Take some solace in these words, take notice of this place.
Hollow whispers that they are, like the wind upon my face.
Sing softly in my ear and look at me with wonder.
I will try to ease your fear as the darkness pulls you under.

I enjoy PvP greatly, however for PvP to be fun:

    1. The dev's had to make a concerted effort in developing a PvP system, it can not just be an after thought.
Its hard to balance out class vs class, and much easier to blance out for combat vs npc's. Its totally different and some games do not account for that.

    2. It is not not ping based PvP. Some types rely on twich reation and if your ping is not upto par then your toast. example: Games like "Outpost" are all about the ping, people in asia will own someone from the UK, simple due to local.

    3. The game has support personal that address griefers. If you have no ref's per say it can get ugly because griefers do tend to gravitate to these games.

    4. You have to have thick skin. If someone knows they can get to you they will, its just that simple.

I like PvP because I'm interested in roleplaying a massive war. I don't really care for 1v1 pvp but group vs. group all the way to guild vs. guild an nation vs. nation is inspiring. It's awesome to see dozens of your allies on fighting a giant battle against a horde just as large.

I'd also like to comment on part of what xplororor said:

Guess what? ALL FPS are exactly the same! Make the server, get teams formed, kill, find power ups, kill, get killed, rinse-repeat 1,000 times until you have to go to school, work, sleep.

You make minor distinctions between games like AO and SWG but in the end MMORPGs can essentially be boiled down to repeating the same things over and over to level up to do harder things. Then you just repeat that. Yet, MMORPGs definately have their own unique factor and so do FPS games. Especially if you want to get in the competitive side of FPS play, there are many more numerous factors than getting powerups and "out-twicthing" your opponent. Games like Wolfenstein and Tribes emphasize solid teamplay and it adds a lot to the game, making it much more than just a reflex, power up snagging kill fest. A little off topic but the point is you can overgeneralize any game you want but there isn't much of a reason for it.

I would like to second the people who scaled up the PvP conflict.

I would love to see massive armies battling it out , One of the things that got me into RPG on the computer was fantasy fiction, one of the bigs things in a lot of these books, quests aside ::::35:: , are the huge battles and to be part of that is very attractive.

Fighting PvE there are limits on the AI and how they respond to situations, pitching yourself against another group of people makes for much more interesting battles.

It isnt all about griefing and being better than everyone else just making for a more interesting environment.

PvP can be VERY fun if it is in the right conditions. It needs to be restricted and monitered IMO. For example, in Soma, we have set times for PvP events such as the War Of the Worlds (which matches devils VS humans in a neutral map). The winner of this war wins the map for the rest of the week until the next war. When you die in this situation you do not lose items, but POS. POS is used as a kind of rating and anyone can see how much POS you have, so the people who get lots of kills can be celebrated. It really does work IMO.

If your looking for PvP in normal play, Soma has a system where Pking is punished by losing moral points which does not really matter unless you kill LOTS of people in which case your moral rating goes down to Devil and you are punished as you are no longer allowed in town.

For those who want to Pk constantly, the GM's have recently added a few PKer spots where Pkers can get the essentials such as repair and health potions. This allows for a few notorious villains to be constant pkers. The balance has been found by having an involved guild system which means when the PKer kills someone, they are most likely to be hunted down by one of the strong guilds and punished. Pkers will drop items if they die also.

I believe this is method of PvP is VERY good. You can still kill the odd person if they are annoying you, you can even become and notorious criminal, but there will be serious consequences. I have yet to find a game with such a balanced system anywhere else.
