"I hate ghetto english, and lots of ppl here are telling me to get off the net and stay in a monastery."

Funny, I re-read all the posts in this thread and found no mention of monasteries.

Has the net been turned into a ghetto?

"ghetto: A section of a city occupied by a minority group who live there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure." If the 'Net is a ghetto, which person or group of people do you think are the oppressors that force internet users into this "ghetto"?

Or, are these under-educated ppl bullying the decent ppl out of the net?  (just like in the ghetto, the bullies force their ways to others)

First, formal education does not necessarily equate to decency. I'm sure that there are a good number of people who have college degrees who use a whole lot of "swear words", lie, cheat, steal, etc.

Second, the concept of decency is not objective (though it may be for some). Most communities exist by the standards that the majority of its members find appropriate. If I am not mistaken, here in the U.S. we practice this sort of a "community standard" type of organization. Since the internet does not have any sort of governing body or standards by which individuals should or should not behave, is it safe to assume that one should then take the standards of decency as that which the majority  of the community finds decent?

Also, when speaking about the Internet in its entirety, I would be careful making over-generalized statements about its membership. Following your statement, is it fair to hypothesize that the majority of users on the internet are people without a formal college education, and are subsequently pressuring a group of people who have particular values to stay off the internet? In other words, IF there are more people without college educations on the internet than people with college educations, and IF the majority of those people have a standard of decency which is different from your definition of a "decent person", ARE those people making an effort to force those with different values out of the internet? Sounds rather far-fetched to me.

Are these ppl saying that all ppl who dont like ghetto english should leave the net?

If I am interpreting others correctly, then I believe they are saying that the use of various slang terminologies, that which you call (rather  disparagingly, I might add) "ghetto English" is prolific on the 'Net, and people who disapprove of their use should choose to either tolerate or leave the situation. For instance, I may not like Britney Spears' music, but I know that her presence in pop culture is so widespread that my only realistic choices are to continue to listen to pop music stations for the songs I do like or change the channel to one that doesn't play her stuff. Starting a verbal campaign to eliminate her fans and materials from pop culture is possible, but the probable outcome is failure.

I hate ultra vulgar speaking ppl too.

I bet these ppl will tell me to stop playing mmorpg (good thing most mmorpg have vulgar blocking system, although I turn that off everytime).

Most likely if I move to a monastery, and vulgar speaking ppl pass by, and I expressed my views, ppl will tell me to get off this planet if I dont like it, and that I should live on the moon.

If you moved into a monastery, you probably wouldn't have a steady stream of passers-by. Also, most visitors to a monastery recognize that the monks have a certain code of behavior (at least the ones that I've been to). Subsequently, the visitors "behave themselves". Should a person or persons behave in a way that the monks percieve as vulgar, the monks have the right to expel that person from their community.

Similarly, MMORPGS as a whole do not belong to you or I, they belong to the companies who have developed them. If the game companies choose to allow such behavior, then such behavior will be allowed. You may petition them all you like; however, unless there is a large uprising of people with similar issues reagrding in-game language, I doubt that they will make sweeping changes to censor such language.

I applaud Rubies of Eventide, as they dont cater to vulgar mouth players, and requires everybody to play nice.   Pls dont tell Rubies of Eventide to get out of the net because it doesnt comform to the REBELIOUS notion that "if u dont like me, then get out, eventhou this is your house".

I fully support the developers of Rubies of Eventide for establishing a set of rules by which they expect players to follow. People do have the right to tell the developers that their standards of decency are too stringent or are oppressive; however, it is also the developers' right to ignore those commentaries. The game's existence on the 'Net will likely more be affected by whether or not they have a steady source of income rather than player criticisms, although the criticisms could potentially affect the game's user base.

Why am I continuing this dumb discussion?   It is because I want to express my view, and the view of alot of the decent ppl, that alot of ppl still want to block ghetto english from creeping to every aspect of our communication.

I don't think that this is a dumb discussion; quite the opposite. I also respect your right to express your own view. However, I do question the validity of some of your arguments, and I find some of your terminology vague, spiteful and derogatory. I think I have already supplied a discussion regarding the integration of slang terminology into general communication.

And pls stop being like a ghetto bully, that anyone of disagree to your opinion should be bullied out or bullied into submission.

I don't know if that statement was directed towards me, but I am also not attempting to "bully" you in any way.

Finally, I'm still interested to know why this bothers you so much. I have not known a person to become so "verklempt" over a semantic issue, especially one within a MMORPG.

    Warmest regards.

Try this, when u talk to your parents, your grandparents, your boss, your corporation high level officers and other ppl with high ranking position, use ghetto english.

I know you understand that there is a time and place to use ghetto english.  Question is, is all the net a place to talk ghetto english, or just some of it?

I agree that there are some good things that can come out of the new words being invented (and also something good that comes out of this discussion), but you should also know that there are somethings bad that are invented.  To me, "badass" and "the bomb" are words that I rather not see become so popular that they are made as everyday words by everybody.

I apologize for calling ppl under-educated.  But I want you to ask your parents if they consider ppl who keep using ghetto english as under-educated.

P.S.  Pls no more of the way I used deragatory words, and only reply on the topic... I mean, dont neatpick (dont know the spelling) the words, but try to understand the topic.   Topic is not about me, but about the lingo.  I made mistakes, and I admit them.  Talk about the topic, and stop talking about me.  This is another irony in my post.

I keep responding to this thread as I wanted to see if

1.) I am such a bigot for having this view  (probably your parents have the same views)

2.) I am the only 1 who dont like ghetto english

3.) Ppl are so resign with the prevalent of ghetto english that they just give up and stop arguing

4.) There are ppl who will back me with this view

This is probably my last post to this thread, as I feel resigned to the fight to minimize the prevalence of some ghetto words over the net.  I want to have more places on the net where ppl talk properly (like they were at a place of respect), like when they talk to their parents, but my fight is over, as I only see enemies posting.

it seems as though some things you like, and some you dont. you say 'ppl' all the time. this is what loses me. do you want everyone to talk like you and abbreviate only where you would? i will almost always write longhand. some will almost always write shorthand. if i dont like that, i dont read it. let the ghetto boys and girls talk how they like, because only ghetto boys and girls will listen to them. it doesnt bother me so much if they dont want me to read what they are writing to me.

    tommy.

Abbreviations are fine as long as they are understandable by the people reading them. An example is the medical profession. Doctors communicate with each other very successfully with abbreviations such as b.i.d. or npo. But to most people outside of their profession these abbreviations mean nothing. I guess you just have to consider the people you're talking to while you're playing a game. If they're a group of your immediate peers and each of you understands the abbreviations then no problem. But when you're with new people there could be a wall thrown up there.

But I do sometimes wonder about the people who are angered by things going on around them such as ghetto language. It seems to me that perhaps the people getting angry are the ones who see how such things can cause a breakdown and seperation in a society.

Look at the recent comments by Bill Cosby for example. What he said was totally correct. How can someone who speaks ghetto language expect to make it in a competitive society where communication of ideas is critical? If someone can't communicate successfully then whether they are intelligent or not is indecipherable.

I personally think that it's a symptom of the breakdown of our society. People don't understand what effect their actions have on things around them, nor do they really care anymore. They're too busy blaming other factors for their faults or they just don't accept the fact that they are screwing up. This might seem like a bold statement to make on something as seemingly petty as language in gaming, but examples such as this and others combined point towards a breakdown. Just look at rap and hip-hop culture. This culture is actually considered cool by a lot of people?!?! That's why people are angry, they see the fallout around them.
