monthly fee or not does not really matter....but Cash shop would be nice.
2 of the MMOs I played: FFXI and WoW. both have monthly fee.. but people still spend thousands of dollar buying Gil and Gold from online website.. it's a fact.
So having a cash shop in a way also limits how much people will seek outside source for their in-game progress (power leveling service. buy account. buy item. buy currency) To me personally.. cash shop IS the balance. They just need to adjust things in a way so that you can either spend time or spend money to achieve the same thing.
Cash shop also pulls in the casual player who has money but not the time. I left FFXI because I simply don't have the time to kill 1 monster with 40 other guys so 1 guy can get the gear and the money to keep up with the insane MRT price anymore.. and I do not intent to play another MMO w/o cash shop.. because one-sided MRT is simply ugly.
Edit: just saw Travian's ad in the little banner.....I am plaing Travian now >_> their cash shop.. and Cabal as well.
Edit II:
= paying for a game (or a serial # / CD key rather) is a good way to limit people who want to abuse free software (in game currency seller. hacker. some immature human being who keeps getting banned)
= I will pay monthly fee is that's what it takes to keep a MMO running smoothly.
Cosmetic items(fluff items) would only sell in an item shop if they were cool looking and were not able to be had in game otherwise. Then they become desirable and can be traded in game for coin or items thus becoming a RMT advantage in game. There is no such thing as a benign micro transaction.
Just say no to RMT and microtransactions. Subscriptions are the only way to maintain a fair and level playing field.

that's why the item is binded to the character that purchased it. I mean... you know item can work in that way right?
I guess if RMT can be dealt with simply by saying "no"... people wouldn't have been suffering the way they did in FFXI for the past 6 years.
I am not a fan of "spending 12 hours a day to achieve something" guy anymore.. and I am certainly not up for another "after 6 years, I finally got a Blackbelt for my monk" game. I will admit at this point.. I have more money than time at my hand.. or at least that's how I want it to be...
--------------------------------------------
Why can't there be a game that has monthly AND cash shop (that sells more than just a item that change look) at the same time anyway? Just like why is it only people who have the time but not the people who have money can reach far into the game?
you can say no to cash shop even if there is one O_O like how you can just say no to RMT even if they obviously exist .
non-the-less.. don't really know how Aion is going to be like as far as PvE / Gear / Item play.. I would play any decent PVP game. But I just don't want to see it end up being like FFXI on the economy side.
I think a great way would be the way WoW does it, I have never played WoW but I like the way they choose you how to pay by card OR by buying a game card.
If your a student like myself, paying for a lot with just a part-time job as income game card is way to go as you don't need to be worying about having money in the account or maybe you don't want to pay for am onth when you aren't going to be playing it as much?
I really do hope they does otherwise I don't think I will be able to play and will be quite gutted!!!
Sorry if this has already been mentioned in someway.
I could've swore I read somewhere that Aion was going to be free-to-play with an item shop in the American release, but now that I'm looking for it I can't find that anywhere.
Anyways, the only reason I was interested in this game was because it was supposedly going to be free-to-play. I've played way too many Pay-to-Play games that simply weren't worth handing over a monthly fee for. This game looks like it might be decent, but not worth a monthly fee, in my opinion. However, with item mallscash shopswhatever you'd like to call them.. The items they sell shouldn't be for cash shouldn't be anything hugely game altering or giving one person a huge advantage over another, especially since pvp will be a large focus of this game. Giving someone a sword of one-hit-kill for $50 is ridiculous, giving someone +50% to their health is ridiculous.. Cosmetic items, by all means throw them in the mall, even things like exp boosters, go ahead and throw those in there.
I like being able to play games for free, especially since It's been a long time since i've bought a game that I didn't regret wasting the money on. If someone else feels that they need to gain exp faster and have the money to blow, by all means let them.. But personally, I'm cheap. I'll gladly play the game it was meant to be played, but only if it's free, and only if the cash shop isn't giving overpowering bonuses to it's buyers. They should be filled with items with enough incentive to want to buy them, things that just make gaming a bit easier or more appealing, but not to break the game and make someone stand out above the rest simply because they can afford it.
Until someone comes out with something that's just dripping with promise of being a remarkably ground-breaking game, I'll hold on to my money.
-edit-
Since so many, remarkably, seem to be a fan of handing over their money to pay monthly for a game though.. My payment scheme suggestion: Offer both subscription and free to play w item mall servers. People that want to pay monthly are welcome to, then others like me that don't want to pay don't have to.. wee!
-edit 2- Reading back, since some people are asking if there would be any games that us poor people would pay for, I've already decided on mine. If Darkfall is ever released and delivers on it's promises (Goes back to that ground-breaking next generation game I mentioned above) then I'd gladly pay monthly for it, if that's the route they go. That's the other reason I was interested in this game, aside from hearing that it was supposed to be free-to-play. It seemed like a good way to waste time while I wait for Darkfall to be released and I'm expecting Aion to be released, Darkfall I'm still uncertain of, it could very well turn to vapor.
I could've swore I read somewhere that Aion was going to be free-to-play with an item shop in the American release, but now that I'm looking for it I can't find that anywhere.
I'm sorry but, I'm sick of people who are blinded by their own selfishness and don't understand the significant differences between Free-to-play(w/cash-shop) and Pay-to-play games.
If Aion was Free-to-play/Item-mall, then everyone who's aware of those types of games will automatically think it's going to be a low budget, low quality piece of garbage. Considering how much attention and money is being poured into Aion, there's no chance in hell it's going to be F2P. There's no way for a company to make a F2P game look and taste the same as a P2P one, otherwise that company would be digging their own grave because of the massive amounts of money involved in making games would be thrown away. Not saying Pay-to-play games are usually better, since yes, most of them suck because the companies that makes them usually suck.
If you want a F2P game to kill time with, download Shaiya, I heard it's a some-what decent game. And maybe Rappelz.

I say again, if by any chance AION would be F2P, and only item mall and stuffs, u can count me and my mates out..
We wanna play quality games... and let's be honest guys... a P2P game kinda washes a lot of those kinda players we dont want to see in a beautiful MMORPG like aion.
So tbh, f2p with mall never gives so much profit as monthly payment, because well, most of the persons that play F2P games are the kind of persons that aren't gonna waste money in a game (i know lots of them xD).
P2P for sure, I don't mind paying for this game, it looks worth while, and rather low required specs, which is always good, I'm wondering about how the Servers are going to be laid out, will i have to play with the koreans lulz, i don't mind since I've played with alot of Japanese in FFXI.
I say again, if by any chance AION would be F2P, and only item mall and stuffs, u can count me and my mates out..

What are u talking about there?? did u even read what i posted, I'M SAYING IF BY ANY chance AION would be like GW (f2P, only pay retail) THAT u can count me and my mates out.
I prefer 10000000 times to have a Pay to Play game, and give me the quality that i expect than a buggy shitty game with many money issues that doesn't allow it to envolve.
Damn, we're screwed. A lot of friends of mine and me were waiting for this game, but if it's p2p then i guess no chance to play even thou i think it's better than micro-payments, but anyways good games are rarely free so i guess i should do something or i don't know to pay monthly.

Well Krausen, u're right there, every F2P game is crappy, let's admit it.. for some reasons games like WoW have 10 mil players, why? because it has quality, and it's company blizzard, has financial wealth to be able to give to their players the quality they expect.
Without funds, u cant expect a good MMORPG. Ofc there are bad examples in this equation (everquest comes in mind) However, if the game has good bases, with a monthly payament the company can exepect what funds it will receive montlhy, and make the right accomodations to players.
And i cant understand how u can consider 13 euros per month expensive.. i mean if i go to my local bar, and ask for some white drinks (which contain vodka, rum, bacardi) i will end up paying 5 euros per drink, or even if just a beer i end up paying 1.5 eur.. which means a well relaxed night i will spend easily just 20 euros on drinks,.. and im not even considering having dinner.
SO whenever i think the fun factor that this games gives me, the quality it imposes, i think 13 euros is a hella of a lot cheaper than anything else.. if u dont have a job and are in school, just save from money. instead of buying wtv u normally buy.
Game designers and programmers must be payed for their hard work! And by the looks of it, 13 euros per month for a game like AION seems cheappppppppppppp .
i voted 3rd option, P2P with micro's. the P2P format, IMO, delivers a much better game. I have played WoW and then compared it to the numerous f2p games and theres no contest. The quality in WoW is so much nicer and its just much more fun. So, P2P for me

I've played both and subscription games are the only ones I'll ever play. I think everything should be earned in game on how you play not on how much you are willing to spend. micro games always come off as a trashy and unprofessional to me.
why is this thread so long. if u dont think its going to be p2p then log off. its nc soft and a game with a year or 2 of work. if u play a free game and complain about it, u should think hey maybe thats why its free. its like getting a free car and complaining the a fixed up car beat u. if u cant afford say 14 bucks a month to play then dont play and stop posting.
i like p2p games cause it cuts down on the returds that play and post why its not free to play.
Sorry Valentina. I know this is just a simple poll but... If Aion was Item-mall only, the in-game experience would be totally different then if was a monthly flat-fee one. Item-mall is a greedy company's way of saying: "Why let all the gold farmers make all the money when we could do it legally?" Some people spend up to $600 a month just in item-malls. I think that's unfair to the people that isn't crazy enough to spend that much.
Not to mention the fact that some gamers aren't 18 years or older and don't have the money to spend on those items. A monthly fee is best.
However, theres nothing wrong with a company trying to make money. If there's no monthly fee, they have to make money somehow in order to cover the costs of running the MMO and it's servers.

You, being the one who said WoW had to be free, I'll take this with a bit of salt.
