But if there was a special free EVE subscription here on MMORPG that I missed, it explains why there is such a high concentration of fans here. And don't tell me that "ratings can't be manipulated", it just takes a bit longer here. EVE has nearly 1000 votes, while EQ only has 700. I did like trading in EVE with buy/sell orders. And maybe the game has gotten better since then (for example you mentioned insurance, which was just about to be introduced when I quit the game). But you still lose your cargo when your ship is being shot down, and I also got podded once and lost skills. So I'm not going to play a game for its nice trading opportunities, if it also has nice waylaying opportunities.
*sigh* Please do a search on the rating system here. Back in Feb of 04 the administration of this webpage completely revamp their rating scores. You cannot just log in for the first time and rate the game. This and other changes concerning the rating were implemented.
Also, the insurance option in EVE had been around since beta. The option was always there. Also, there is insurance to make up for your lost cargo (known as platinum insurance). EVE insurance program has 6 tiers. The highest tier covers cargo loss. So, yes, you can insure your goods and yes this has been around for quite some time as well.
It's totally your opinion that you hate EVE, and I respect that. But dont log in and say that people are cheating the rating system somehow, that's just poor class
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
En1Gma, what Tobold was saying could entirely be true. You did not read his post good enough. They may not be able to "swoop" right in and do it but by signing up and logging in you get points. So he said it would take just a bit longer than doing the swoop. It's entirely possible, whether you like it or not. Could happen for any game. As stated in the FAQ, this can be the only thing you do to raise rank if you wish:
How many days you visited the site (and logged in). This is also counted when you use our "autologin" feature.
I would know because that's what I used to do before I decided to start posting some. There is really no way I could think of to prevent 'fanbois' from doing such a thing. Now, if you required a rank pretty high that could not be achieved just by logging in every day for the month (which is a bad idea).. that may stop some from doing it. But at this time I am unaware of the exact requirements as I was able to vote without any problem.
Originally posted by En1Gma It's totally your opinion that you hate EVE, and I respect that. But dont log in and say that people are cheating the rating system somehow, that's just poor class
My opinion that this rating is not reflecting a true value is not because I don't like that game. But if a game that has just 10% of the subscribers of EQ1 or FFXI ends up with 50% more people coming here and pushing it to the top of the ratings list, I can very well assume that something is wrong.
You said there are up to 10,000 active EVE players online? And a full 10% of those just spontaneously had the idea to come here and vote? If the other games had that sort of spontaneous participation, they would have up to 50,000 votes, and not just 700. How do you explain that?
EVE has the dubious distinction of being the only MMORPG that I bought and then not even finished the free month.
You found out EVE Online is not for you. Nothing wrong with that. But there are between 30,000 to 50,000 other gamers who disagree and support EvE with their wallets/purses. EvE barely makes it across the line that defines a successful MMORPG. The industry standard is having 100,000 accounts. 50,000 accounts if a MMORPG wants to have a chance in heaven or hell of ever recouping all investment money. EvE is not a runaway success. But it IS on track to making a profit, to NOT being in danger of being shut down. You dislike EvE. That is ok. But it cannot be said EvE is a failure.
The endless boring space-travel, and the endless boring mining, just to have all the wealth you accumulated shot down under you by a PK, was just not a fun game.
EvE has a VERY high learning curve. Also EvE is a thinking game. BTW, just so we all know where you are coming from, what was your character name? What type of ship did you have? Because it is near impossible to be effective in PvP playing EvE less than 1 month. 1 month is NOT enough time to learn the needed skills, get a decent ship, THEN out fit that ship with the right parts, guns, defenses, etc... Even if a corporation were to "twink" you with a high end ship, your character will still be near useless because your character will not have the skills to use the ship effectivly.
If you want to talk about boring, try playing EQ. Kill 3 monsters, then sit down and rest for 30 mins! Kill 3 more monsters, rinse repeate. At mid level it is kill 5,000 of the exact same monster in a row. And yes, I am a fan of EQ! LOL!
EvE does not have the crown when it comes to being boring. Did you attempt to explore the other features of EvE? Joining a corporation? Teaming up with other players? Doing the ENTIRE newbie tutorial? (EvE has the longest newbie tutorial out of every single MMORPG. The learning curve is so high.) So you know what you are doing? Did you try posting any questions on the EvE forums?
And most review sites agreed with me here, e.g. Gamespot gave it a 6.6, compared with 8.4 for City of Heroes. And subscription numbers are low as well.
Game review sites are just like movie reviews. EvE is a space only MMORPG. Any reviewer who likes Fantasy-themed MMORPGs, or is used to them, will enter EvE having zero idea what to expect. There are no Elves, Dwarfs, Trolls, Orcs, magic, swords, dungeons, etc.... Just like a movie reviewer who likes comedies but gets stuck reviewing a horror movie. Going in he will have less of a chance of knowing what to look for, and liking it. There are in reality TWO things to go by:
1 - What do YOU yourself like? Buy and play games you personally like and/or intrested in. Donnie Darko the movie bombed major the first time it released. But it developed such a cult following it got re-released just now. I watched it and liked it. It requires immense thinking to follow it, and understand it. Not for the masses. The people who like it, like it no matter what the reviewers say about it. Play the games you like and enjoy no matter who else likes or dislikes them. Find out for yourself if you personally like a game.
2. - If the game is a MMORPG, is it successful? Or if it is new, is it on track to becomign successful? Because a MMORPG has an intended shelf life of 5 years. Even if one does not play it 5 years straight, just to experience all of any MMORPG requires one to invest a lot of time. Weeks and weeks, months and months. You can love a MMORPG game, but if it is not pulling in a profit, it can/will be shut down any moment. Most gamers would say it is not worth investing their time buidling up a character in a MMORPG they enjoy but is not successful.
EvE is successful. The game itself still posts how many accounts it has. It was not too long ago that EvE had its highest amount of players online at the same time. Factor in the 3 major/power time zones of the world (USA, Europe, and Asia) and EvE has enough of a population that it is NOT in danger of being shut down. Enough that it DOES have a very nice chance of re-couping all money invested into making it. It is not a runaway success, but it is a success.
So I was VERY surprised to see EVE at the top of the MMORPG.com games ratings list. Is there an unusual concentration of rabid fans here? Or has that rating been manipulated?
Refer back to my 2 things to go by when deciding if a game is worth playing. You decided you disliked EvE. Why are you concerned about EvE getting a high rating at MMORPG.com? Are you a mindless follower who only plays games if everyone else says they like it? Or do you play games you like and/or are curious about - finding out for yourself if you personally like them?
Last, any gamesite will always be biased. Here at MMORPG.com it is too easy for 1 poster to make multi accounts and pump up the ratings for whatever game they like. Imagine what a guild could do? It has already been done with AC2. The game has roughly 6,000 accounts (you want to talk low populations? Heheh.) Yet last month some AC2 fans pumped up its rating here at MMORPG.com and made it 2nd place on the list.

Slooow down there.......
That is the number of players online at the same time. NOT the total amount of players who play the game. There will always be players in different time zones sleeping, eating, working, at school, etc... EQ for example does NOT and never ever had., 400,000 players online at the exact same time. It has roughly 20,000 to 50,000 players online at the same time. IF all players in EQ tried to login at the same time, they would be unable to.
The same thing happend with SWG first day of released. Every player tried to login at the same time. Heck, it continued to happen during the first 4 months of SWG. Players were unable to login because ALL servers were full. SWG back then was able to hold roughly 100,000 players online at the same time. But close to 300,000 were trying to login. SWG later added more new servers. Right now SWG can hold roughly 250,000 players online at the same time. But (according to LucasArts) there are over 400,000+ players.
TOTAL players in EvE is between 30,000 to 50,000. That is not a runaway success, but it is close enough to the industry standard in that EvE is NOT in danger of being shut down. EvE has a nice chance of recouping all money invested in it to make it.
it's impossible to swoop in and give it tens. The Admins have it designed where u cannot do this. LOL, why can't people just accept the fact that it is the highest as of to date? You have to have a certian posting rank in order to do rate the game. Someone cannot create an account and then give it straight 10's
Well, I never intended to be a semi-frequent poster to this website, I only intended to give 10s to a few games and leave, so I created an account and made a few posts to get my rank up and then rated the game.
So to say people can't come in and pop up ratings is untrue, they just have to do a very small amount of work and they can do it.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

ok, I can very well see that happening, but its been rated by people who like the game
I dont like City of Heroes but I think the rating for that is legit.
Ah well, its cool, but the point still remains. People like this game and the ratings show for it. The ratings really isn't intended to make fun of the mmorpg you are currently playing if its not EVE...its a rating based on the people who voted.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
A few things are going on I think. First off the people who like Eve tend to be somewhat hardcore about it and they will come here and defend it.
About the stuff about EQ and Daoc having many more people signed up, well I can not argue with that fact. One thing though is that the subscription numbers from that site you listed seem to stop at 10/03 and the numbers have gone up since then, especially over the past few months. Taking a quote from the site you listed
"Eve Online (Confidence Rating: A)
After receiving better data, I can now report Eve Online has some 30,000 subscribers as of October 2003"
Now how can a game with hundreds of thousands of players get a lower rating then Eve? Well I played Daoc for almost 2 years and that whole time I had never heard of this site. If you are happily playing the MMORPG that you had been playing for a few years then you may not ever come here. When I started playing Daoc I do not even know if this site existed. I found out about this site when I started searching for a new game to play early this year. I think there has been a lucky confluence of events for Eve and this site. The free trial happened at the same time a whole lot of new people are discovering this site.
So I do not think its manipulation in the traditional sense but part luck and part timing.

I agree
Also, CCP (owners of EVE) has even admitted that they didn't push for an astronomical Advertisement campaign. Why? I have no idea why they kept their game, in a lack of better words, low key.
The community manager for CCP (back when it was Pann) declared that EVE wasn't pushed tremendously in terms of advertisments in the U.S. and I don't know why they choose to do this. Maybe to get a feel for their servers being stressed? I have no idea.
But one thing is certain, EVE has never experienced financial hardships or has ever experience a profound loss of player after the first 3 months like many other mmorpgs do.
Its a hardcore game really designed for those who enjoy thinking (its not a put-down..its the God-honest truth) and enjoying a game that has so much depth no one has even hit the ocean floor of EVE yet.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I did try it out... and I'm still with it. I think I wrote something on my hype about it "not being for everyone", but if everyone had the same exact tastes, then what new things would there be for any of us to try? I'm into my second month with it, and I don't expect to abandon it any time soon. I tend to subscribe to multiple MMOs to suit various moods. EVE is not some Ladder based "uber l337 h4xx0r" game where you get to tout your cyber notoriety in a virtual world, but rather a mellow take on the sci-fi space genre.
If it hadn't been for the free trial, I have to admit, I might not have tried it. Sci-fi usually isn't my genre at all, I normally like fantasy based MMOGs with lots of spell, monsters, and items. A couple of my friends had tried EVE when it first came out, and hated it, but they returned by trying the free trial, and begged me to come join them, so I did. I'm a few days away from piloting my first battleship, at least until battlecruisers come out in Shiva.
I think what I've found in EVE is a game with a whole new vision, and personally I like it.
Originally posted by BartDaCat I think what I've found in EVE is a game with a whole new vision, and personally I like it.
That's exactly what I thought when I tried it out back in June of last year as well - these guys and girls have indeed pushed through to make a vision come through. They have also come a long way since then, regarding content, technical issues, lag, customer contact, patches and whatnot.

What I don't get is how knives could see EVE as being a real time strategy game.
--------------------------------------------- Killer 86%, Achiever 46%, Socializer 33%, Explorer 33%
--------------------------------------------- Killer 86%, Socializer 53%, Explorer 33%, Achiever 26%
Sort of make sense, afterall the game is run realtime for combat, and it's highly strategic. But in defense of your case it's not really like C&C now is it.
More imporantly, I don't see what the huge deal would be playing an online RTS and paying for it. C&C generals is better than a whole lot of MMOs out there and if it was a MMO hell I'd pay for that Way cooler than level grinding in AO or the likes IMO anyway.

But that's just me.
What I don't get is how knives could see EVE as being a real time strategy game.
