Age of Conan: Game Goes Gold

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Funcom announced today that their upcoming MMORPG Age of Conan has gone gold.

Durham, USA – April 22, 2008 – After four years of development co-publishers Funcom and Eidos are proud to announce that Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has gone gold. One of the most highly anticipated MMO games in history is about to hit the store shelves, and the gates to the world of the mighty barbarian will soon be open to the millions of gamers around the world.

“Even though it feels like this great adventure is coming to an end, it’s really not at all. The launch is just the beginning” says Game Director/Producer Gaute Godager. “I believe we have created a game that will stand the test of time by its own accord, but we are already busy planning future features and expansions. We want to continue expanding Conan’s world for many years to come, and we have great ideas on what to do!”

After years of development and testing Age of Conan is now finally ready for prime time! To prepare for launch, tens of thousands of players have tested the Beta, enabling Funcom to polish the game prior to going live. While the game gets closer to release the anticipation for the title is also building steadily. Just last week 475.000 unique visitors went to the official Age of Conan websites, and the pre-order numbers in some important retail chains track as among the highest for any MMO launched.

“Age of Conan has been in development for a long time, as with all MMOs, but we have spent that time well and ended up with a game we are incredibly proud of,” says Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. “Creating a game of such epic proportions is an ambitious and challenging task, but we believe we have truly succeeded in realizing the vision of the game. We simply can’t wait to let the players in and let them experience the amazing adventures we have created.

Age of Conan is consistently mentioned as one of the most anticipated PC games in development. At launch the game will have received more than thirty covers on high-profile gaming magazines across the globe and more than fifteen major awards, including numerous "Best MMO of E3" awards and the official "Best Online Game" award at the Games Convention 2007. Age of Conan is a key title in Microsoft's Games for Windows line-up, and a showcase title for nVidia. Age of Conan launches 20th of May in North America / Oceania and 23rd of May in Europe

Wow for some reason I thought AoC had been pushed further back, but I must be getting it mixed up with WAR or something.

Anyway that's great news.  I'm interested to see the game in action and hopefully it's as good as it sounds on paper... ok we all know that never happens.

Game still needs another 6 months of class polish and bug fixing, but I guess good for them.

how does a game go gold of pre-orders?

what if a whole bunch of people cancel?  i always thought a game went gold after it sold X copies off the shelf of a game store and until it is released it cannot go gold..

anyway good for Funcom and good for Mythic.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Ah you're confusing Gold development status with sales numbers, like in the music industry an album can go gold or platinum.

In this case, going gold means the game is complete and will now be sent off to some manufacturer to create all the install disks, box it up and send it off the stores for sale.

A little game called Dark and Light comes to my mind...... anyway not compairing AoC to DnL at all but in my oppionion hype over a game is only a marketing skeem to get people to buy the game at launch, and then of course comes the wave of angry people who didn't get exactly what they wanted, then the fans come back angry that people don't share their tastes...... the flame wars begin soon.....

    My opinion matters to everyone...

Trying to remember back to WoW's launch. to remember how horrible certain aspects of the game were compared to the version we play today.

No battlegrounds, no honor, no arenas, population probs - servers maxed out and 1 hour waits to get in, server crashes, random DC's, Black Rock Spire / onyxia as endgame...

im trying to remember all of this so that i don't freakout at AoC needing patches to sort, balance, add stuff.

The best we can hope for is that the basic gameplay is sound, that no classes are broken and that there is enough to keep most entertained up to the first content patches. :)

ooh and hoping I dont have to wait to long to ride my Rhino :D

Congrats Funcom for going Gold on an unfinished game.

lol i cant imagine a WoW as u described it.  No BGs?!  Im sure there will be bugs in AoC at release, but nothing they cant handle.  I mean face it, all games have bugs, patches, more bugs, and yet more patches.  Idk when we will get to ride rhinos, but i hope i get em soon into the game!

That's an easy one to answer.

It releases 3 days later in EU because that's when the distributors "release" games in the EU. On Fridays.

In NA, we release new stuff on Tuesdays.

Similarly, the music industry might release stuff on Wednesdays in the NA, and Fridays again in the EU, etc. It comes down to choice of the distributors.

K, I'm confused now too. I thot the release was Oct.30th. I understand the pre-order status but does this article mean it's for sale next month or not?

May 20th according to IGN and Amazon (where I PreOrdered the CE)

So I knew this would happen around this week or last...

Gold means they have started to make discs etc. It has nothing to do with sales.

Spmething like finished mmorpg do not exist... every big game today had some kind of problems at start, and if we survived Hellgate start when game was practicly unplayable becasue of unstable engine we wont have any problems with game that is prety much finished have all core features and is more or less stable.

As for class balancing, something like that do not exist. It can only exist if everyone will play exacly the same character. At best you can make certian clases beter against some other certian clases. even games that are 4-5 years after lauch still do extensive class balance changes.

As for today AoC is very promising and will have good smoth lauch for a game with fresh new engine (lotr is using engine developed since Ac2 for years and tested in 2 games + experianced devs with the tools) thats way lotr beta was so polished and stable. Nothing is w/o a reason in life

Hmmmm... another game comes to mind, Anarchy Online.

I thought Funcom would have learned from that release, but I guess not. Best of luck with the launch.

Best of luck to AoC. We need that game + WarHammer to push the genre a step further. They have all the ingredients, now we'll see if the cook can deliver.

Why must there be negative people in the world? Beta was fun, ran well, and I was satisfied with what I saw!

    Good job Funcom.
