Ignore the idiots that cannot understand the concept of the Solo Hero making his way among the Great Unwashed.

Solo MMORPG players like to have real players around them, and to join forces >at their option<.

World of Warcraft is the game you want.  All the others are NOT as Solo friendly as they are made out to be.  Or their populations are far, far to low to provide the ambiance that enhances Solo play.

WoW will keep you going for years, if you like.  Lots of classes, two sides, lots of races.  More quests than you will ever do.

LotRO is also a good Solo MMORPG, up to a point.  Around level 40, you will find your quest log filling with Fellowship (group) quests.  Turbine is expanding the higher level Solo questing, so it may be fine by the time you hit 40.

Note that in WoW, 'grinding' is an ok way, but in LotRO, the real exp is via questing.

    Good Hunting

but realise the best loot and gear is gotten by group content so dont waste peoples time here .

    You are so very wrong.

Everybody loves to point out the "multiplayer" in MMORPG, but no one mentions the other letters - RP for Role Playing.

Maybe the OP wants to RP as a loner who specializes in adventuring solo because his character would never want to share his loot with others. Perhaps, his character wants to bring his loot back to the city where he can THEN interact with other players in the form of selling them loot and/or crafted items he has made from his gathered resources.

Remember, there are other "multiplayer" aspects of an MMO besides grouping for adventuring. People who choose to solo in the field often enjoy the social aspects of the game that do not involve combat.

This persons $15 is just as important as yours and he/she deserves an enriching gaming experience (albeit, different from yours) just as much as you do.

Having said all that, I would have to add that I have the best solo experiences with EQ2 and WoW.

I have to agree 100%. Teling someone how to play a game and spend their money is ridiculous! Answer the question or GTFO.

I really enjoy soloing in LOTRO because they made so many branches of quests in the game that you can level to 50 without even touching the main quest based storyline. I play about 20 percent grouping and the rest of the time I just explore and solo. VERY FUN If I had to chose another Id pick Cox.

The first thing I wanted to say that it's pretty stupid that you want to buy a MMORPG when you are just going to solo in it! Why don't you just buy a regular RPG then, there are many great RPGs that you can play at the moment. To name a couple: Jade Empire, Fable: The lost Chapter, ...

But you wanted a solo'able MMORPG. World of Warcraft is probably one of the best solo'able game online. Everquest II is pretty good aswell if you like solo'ing! There are alot of F2P games aswell that are aimed at soloing players like you. It shouldn't be hard to find one !

World of Warcraft has ZERO solo play end game. It has a lot of leveling content. It is nothing more than a sucky grind fest towards end game when you better get a decent guild or you will just be making a new character and doing the same grind to 70.

If you want a game that has true soloability, lots of diversity, and plenty of replayability then go buy Ulitma Online. Yes the graphics are dated, but the game play is far superior to any other grind fest on the market. UO actually offers a depth that no other game has ever touched upon. If you want to make a character that does nothing but make and sell items then do so. If you want to tame the most powerful creatures in the game to do your bidding then do so. If you want to solo play to get the best items in the game then do so. No other game has EVER come close to that, and that why UO is the best solo MMORPG on the market.

I played WoW for over a year before I realised what a grind fest it really is and how much content it really lacks, so I went back to UO. I will never play another game on the MMORPG market until WAR comes out. The only thing WoW ever offered me was a much deeper appreciation of EA Mythic.

    Edit!

To the person that says WoW is absolutely soloable. Please post some screen shots of you soloing Karazhan, Grull's Lair, TK, SSC, MH, BT, or the Sunwell. When you don't need to be in a decent guild to make any progress in any of them and you can actually show up there solo and dominate the entire place then WoW will be "absolutely soloable". Until then, you have to put up with your fair share of asshats end game to get anywhere and that does not make the game "absolutely soloable". If you really believe you can solo play WoW then I feel sorry for you.

I totally and utterly DISAGREE. MMORPGS should OFFER grouping. It should NOT be a forced part of the gaming experience. MMORPGS should offer a community outside of getting with 25 people to raid the same crap over and over and over. MMORPGS should have a viable solo playstyle with an over reaching community to interact with.

    Not sorry to be rude...

Please don't tell other players that if they enjoy to play solo then MMORPGs are not for them. You have absolutely no right to make that claim.

No MMORPGs were NEVER designed to be forced group GRINDFEST. The most notable starter game for the genre had absolutely no group focus. It wasn't until EQ that MMORPGs were group focused. Every other game out there has pretty much cloned EQ and as part of that they have been group focused.

MMORPs were made to offer a player community to players that desired to play solo games. The community was part of the game not the entire game. It is sad that games became what WoW is today. I actually feel more of a presence from the MMORPG community when I am playing solo in UO then when I grouped in WoW.

Its funny how the OP can't waste time but you can. No, the best gear is not gotten by group content in many MMORPGs. Yes, the best gear is gotten in group content in WoW. That is a weakness that WoW has...not a strength.

Guild Wars Nightfall is good for soloing.  You can cusomize your own NPC's (Heros) as you get through the game farther.  between your three heroes and henchmen you should be able to solo endgame.  I am not saying it will be easy but it will still be fun.

Petey, no offline rpg offers worlds with the size and scope of your average mmo. Don't start with oblivion, because personally i find that game as fun as watching paint dry.

Operating solo in an mmo gives you size of world, hustle and bustle of other players moving about giving it life, conversation for some and the option to group on those times you feel like it.

I personally have played mmo's since 1998 and previously preferred grouping, but over time i've noticed that the attitude of your fellow groupers has changed much for the worst. people tend to be impatient, immature, can't grasp the concept that real live > game life and definately only in it for themselves. Of course there are good groupers out there, but many people don't want to waste precious time sharing with morons.

With the death of brad mcquaid, the veil has been lifted off of many an eye to realize that it is foolish to spend what equates to a full time job and more in an mmo. If you are wanting to group all the time, you will find that real life gets put on the back burner.

Anyway, in regards to the OP question, i can say that eq2 is quite solo friendly for some classes but all classes can indeed solo. However, you will be reduced to outdoor soloing or dungeon bottom feeding on very green con heroic crap.

(EQ isn't anywhere near as soloable)

Its so very interesting that everyone mentions how great WoW is for solo play because you can level from 1-70 with out ever having to get in a group. What happens when you get to 70? You group constantly. The only content available worth doing is group oriented. What exactly do you do then? Do you simply start again and level another character to 70? Doesn't that get old after awhile?

SWG pre-cu......... ooops sorry SOE screwed that up.

CoX if you want something casual friendly. Great thing about CoX is you can have fun soloing, but grouping is real easy and makes the game 10 times more fun.

If you want a game with more content and depth then I would recommend WoW.

AO is my outside the box suggestion . Very complex character development and tons of loot. Solo friendly and the basic game is free. The graphics are very dated, but a graphics update is coming sometime this year.

Yeah, and it'll take you about a month to hit cap and then there's nothing to do.  If you look at is as a single player game, I guess it's not that bad, it's only $9.99 in some places as well.

i think what the OP means by solo MMO is what i am looking for asvwell.  in many MMO's you hit a point where the game forces you to group.  this is not a problem in games like WoW or EQ2 but in some of the other games it is a nightmare.  i think he wants a game that can be solo'd from 1- max level and then no doubt go on to raid or something.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

WoW is very solo friendly leveling up to 70, after that the only solo friendly part is the daily quests which turn into a boring grind fest.

Sure you can make loads of gold from doing dailies, but it gets extremely boring after doing it for a week or so.  Which almost forces you to do groups for badge loot which you get in preparation for raiding, which get even more boring after a while.  You could always pvp, but the best gear to be had pvping is doing arena matches.

Granted at end-game time most MMO's get into this same situation of grinding.  CoH/CoV was really fun for a while but it gets extremely boring fighting the same mobs over and over doing the same type of quests over and over.  Granted most of the quests in any MMO follow the general Kill X for me or go get me X.

I would honestly have to say if you want a really good solo experience the best route to go is:

    1.  Oblivion

    2.  Neverwinter Nights 2 (mod sites make this really good)

    3.  The Witcher

    4.  Mass Effect when it is released for the PC.

Why in the world do you want to play a MMO if you want to solo all the time, go play a FPS, that is your styke.

A MMO is designed so you play with others.  Even Wow has lots of group quests that you cannot do solo.

Probably because he feels like it! I get the feeling some people just don't get it, do they? An MMO is designed to be whatever you want it to be. Is this an alien concept for some? If it was meant to be played only with others, there would be no solo content at all to begin with. Now, an online FPS is designed that way. Where's the fun in running around shooting at the sky because no one is around. An MMO can be fun alone because of the live, persistent world where you get to choose when you interact with others or not. The choice alone makes it unique compared to other genres. You're not going to get that in any FPS or RPG now are you? Does the concept of running solo in a persistent world escape some of you? It is fun regardless of what some of you think that experience should be like. It's not up to you to determine how a game should be played by others.

Time has changed so much since i have started playing these type of games , since 1998 actually

UO, EQ , AO , EVE , etc ... too many to name here anyways .

What some dont seem to understand here an i dont blame them either for it , this new wow generation crowd think that soloing a whole mmorpg is the right thing . and dont get me wrong am not blaming them either because online gaming has changed and players want to choose if tthey want to solo or go do some group content .

What am trying to say is that am not telling anyone how to play their game because it's your 15$ as some have said , you play solo you group your choice . what am saying is that ( and this is my opinion ) , mmorpg strength come from the fact that you , and your friends or your guild can go online and go kill some crazy ass beast in a dungeon and talk about it , plus get some really really cool loot doing it , because i cant do this stuff alone , basically it's like table top D&D with some friends around a table .

Believe me in today online games soloing is always an option now because everyone has that play session that too short to find a group , am aware of that even myself had to quit eveonline because i could not comit to my alliance for pvp operations .

tbh i know of only 1 mmo that you cant really solo and that FFXI , so keep away from that one , AO is an excellent solo game because you can create solo or team mission that are instance to your level .

eq2 is very soloable depend of how fast you wanna do it , gear helps this also , lotr which i played also is a game that you can easily solo , except for the book quests which you need a group for .

coh/cov is soloable too my only grip with this game is their not really any loot.

to the OP my best advice i can give you alots of these games offer trials so maybe try some out .

And again am not telling anyone how to play their game or spend their 15$ , I just think that grouping to achieve a common goal is more fun , but's that me .

that why i think eveonline is such a perfect game for me , too bad i dont have more time for it :(

    happy playing

you kind of defeat the purpose of the mmo if your just going to solo. heres some games for you, grand theft auto, elder scrolls, assassins creed. if you play these you can save your money from paying a monthly fee.

or you can always do guildwars. yes it is possible to beat the game using henchies or heroes.

Well, to be honest, there are other ways to be social and to enjoy a community other than partying. I don't really understand why players "don't get this".

One can enjoy an mmo and solo and be social. They might have to alter their expectations regarding larger challenges but if the game supports solo play (such as LOTRO for example) then it can be very rewarding.

soloplay in an MMORPG is only accepted because of the new generation of MMORPGs. where you grind to lvl up and then you raid the same dungeon 40k times.

in the good old days you not necesarely HAD to group but it was recomended to do anything worthwile. also the fact that you could not selfsuffice your avatar did bring in the social part of it. you needed a weapon, you needed to find a weaponsmith  (player) and purchace one from him. same thing for armour, food. and the worst part, you needed to FIND ONE.

the new generation encourages soloplay why? because it gets in more subs. so they made the auction house, instant travel basically "easy mode" for the casual players. so the game becomes soloable. then why group? then it gets adictive and you get more subs and more money and more games which follow the same mold and there goes the industry of the MMORPGs... down the drain. (until some one comes up with a new and inovative concept : AoC or WAR but then the whines will come casual players wont sub, wont have the desired 1 gazilion subs WoW has .... so they make it SOLOABLE, then they get more subs and companies and investors get more money every one is happy and we end up with a single player game that you pay 15$/month for absolutely no reason at all

(yes that was a run-on sentence to show the vicious circle)

so if you want a SOLO MMORPG (again the bigest oxymoron in existance) try any of the WoW//EQ2 grind fest /raid endgame, gear oriented, no death consequences "daycare" templated MMORPGs.

IMHO World of Warcraft is the biggest daycare on earth

So i assume you do RP in every mmoRPg that you play right? Or else why play an mmo? If you want group might as well play counter strike and likes.

You have the completely backwards.  Because you share the world with many other people, an MMO can’t possibly be exactly what you want it to be.
