you can participate in Open Beta on the 1st if you subscribe to FilePlanet and get one of the 50,000 keys they're handing out.

Open Beta will start May1st and run until something around the 17th. In order to get a Beta Key you must be a paid member of the Fileplanet community.

Depends on how you look at it. Anyone could sign up for the Open Beta, you just had to pony up for a paid account. Not Funcom's fault if people are to cheap
. Really, though, it's all just semantics. Some will say its not truely open because you have to pay for something, others will say nothing is free anymore. I look at it this way, Funcom is calling it Open Beta, so thats what it is.

I don't think its sad at all. Funcom saw an opportunity to make a deal with IGN to get a ton of advertising for their game and in exchange help make IGN some more money. It sucks for the consumer, but thats the way the world works and I think in the future we are just going to see more of this type of stuff. If it bothers you so much then don't pay for open beta, heck don't buy the game, that will show them. I know everyone thinks its their right to whine and complain about such things, but if you care so much then why don't you go out and make a game that people will buy, and then you can do whatever you want with it.

Open beta means that the game will be open "to a larger community group, usually the general public." So it is an open beta seeing that the fileplanet community is an larger community group.
paying to have a shot at playing a beta 3 weeks prior to release is ridiculous... the end
fileplanet is going to make a killing off of this ploy, mostly from all the kids whippin out daddy's credit card

Alot of you are forgetting that "open beta" means F2P for the cheep crowd. Look at how many requests there are for "good f2p" games. Some won't/can't pay, so they whine for open betas to play for free for a few weeks.

Well this whole fileplanet thing is about the worst I've seen in awhile, but lets give credit where credit is due. Fileplanet is the one managing it not funcom. It makes perfect sense to use a site like fileplanet to distribute beta keys/files ect. Of course they could have done this any number of different ways, but they chose to make it as inconvienent as possible.
They could have just had a sign up and said we will mail out 50k keys. They could have even said subscibers get priority. Scamming people into paying for a sub they otherwise wouldn't have signed up for and then make people sit around waiting for them to randomly dish out keys is about the dumbest thing ever. If you don't like it then simply don't participate. If they don't get 50k people to fall for this scam (which they probably will) they will just hand out the rest of the keys for free like they always do.
It doesn't matter what spin is put on this, the fact is this is not an open beta. It doesn't matter if funcom do or do not profit from it in any way. Open beta has come to mean a short period before release where the general public get to play the game to decide if they want to play it.
Are funcom under any obligation to have an open beta? No. In the end will it really make any difference? Not really, unless the game sucks, then they could be seen to be hiding something, but since the NDA for this FP invite trial is lifted the majority of people will not really know any different.
Personally I think they could have just done it the same way it has always been done but in the long run there will pretty much no difference other than pissing some people off who don't want to get an FP sub (myself included, but I've pre ordered anyway) to beta a game. I think however you would have to be kind of small minded to let that decide whether you play a game or not.

The worst part of this all, is if it was a different game you'd all be whining that you won't pay for beta, but because this is AoC it's an exception? Hell no. I don't care what MMO it is I'll never stoop so low as to pay to play beta, if you think this isn't a problem you have a screw loose in your head. It's bad enough Funcom and other developers use the key word "tester" as a term to get free labor instead of paying for a quality testing team.
I don't understand how some people can be so reckless with money especially with the way the economy is now. I can see people who already have a fileplanet subscription fine they arn't paying for beta they are paying for the fileplanet services, but the rest of you who are paying just to get in AoC beta are fools.
Maybe instead of you paying for a lap dance the girl should pay you for it? Ya the logic is senseless and so is the AoC community that accepted this idea.
It should have been torrented and hand-picked codes from Funcom to 50,000 sign-ups on the official beta site. Every other developer does it, no reason why Funcom couldn't have other then to partner with fileplanet and reap the rewards from morons. Good game Funcom.
Im just going to wait the extra 2+ weeks to decide on whether or not i will buy (Im not paying to test a game).
I will base my decision on what I hear coming out of open beta, whether i will preorder, or will wait a while, perhaps not even bother with at all wil be based on various factors. Its just another game, they come and go, im not going to get worked up over it and definitely not paying to test a game unless they want to get me half off on the subscription fees which they will not.

So many soapboxers want to make this about paying for a beta but if you take an honest look you will see what you actually pay for and that it is worth it. However screaming doom seems to be much more fun and easily done on the internet these days.

I too was already a paying fileplanet subscriber before this wasn't even a thought. I totally agree with what Liago is saying.
May 1st if you are lucky enough to out click some rabid fanboy and get a key from fileplanet.

The reasoning for limiting a beta crowd with a barrier like a FP sub for lag purposes is a bit retarded for this situation. The game will be released soon, if they can't handle all comers already, they're going to be screwed at release. I'd assume it would be better for... testing in beta form... if the crowd was as large as possible just for release. It's actually common for releasing MMO's to do stress tests with a final totally open beta, so AoC is going against what seems the best idea by limiting the crowd at all.
What is to out click? Get Comrade, install it and follow the directions to set it up.. I got notified and went straight to the page and got my key. There was no outclicking anyone.
