I have to add also That Some console gamers will not admit that PC games are better, more fun, and more content... for serious gamers... I admit I hate Sports games on PC but that's somewhat because I wanna play multiplayer and Also... too many keys on the keyboard so i get messed up..... also applys for Beat-em-up..... If I say Adventure they Shout Mario........ and i just stay quiet....
Cuz no matter what i say .... they will always fall back to that one game that is great... And when I start to quote PC games ooohhh just my luck they haven't played any.....
I almost killed my room-mate when he said he's gonna get Unreal Tournament for PS2.. instead of his PC because the analog pad is easier to crontrol the player than the mouse and keyboard doesn't that just MAKE YOU ANGRY URGH!!!!!!!!!!!!........ I said if you're not gonna get it for PC Just dont get it at all... I couldn't handle it if he did...
PS!!!: Yes I know most consoles allow use of keyboards also... But ok I want you to be playing a MMORPG and get into a fight with a HIGH lvl Mob.... and then you get into trouble.... What do you do?? Drop the Control to use the keyboard to call for help...?? or try to fight them off and hope for the best?> hmmmm just not comfortable......
P PS: dont know if you all have noticed but Consoles are becoming more and more like PC's every generation... Pretty soon Consoles WILL be PC's with an operating system and Instant messengers, and Internet Browsers...... Primarily use keyboards and mice but come with a standard control... think about it... Oh and Updating drivers already exists for Consoles... just doesn't happen as often as in PC's...

ACK! can you imagine when we're all old geezers using pc's and mouse as a way of reminiscing: "Arrrr i can remember it like yesterday, we had to use both our hands on 2 separate tools to move our characters around, these days they just use their damn pads!! Bah humbug, kids these days!"

That first "rule" of computer tech you follow should be replaced with:
1. First define what you intend to use your PC for. Define what your needs are first. Then custom build it accordingly.
For example I have a friend who enjoys playing older classic PC games. Like Homeworld for example. Many classic PC games have better game play than modern newer games. He is about to custom build his next PC. He on purpose wants a Pent 4, GeForce 2 or 3 ,etc.... It will 100% meet his needs. Months from now his computer will not become outdated because it will still meet his needs.
I have another friend who uses a Pent 2, 360 MHZ computer and loves it. Even though he makes 80,000.oo a year (USA). He's been using it the past 2 years. Months from now it still will not become outdated because it will still meet his needs. He uses it strictly to program.
It is first about defining your needs. Then go from there - then seek out what you need to meet your defined needs. Just like buying a car. A $60,000.oo Mercedes sedan is garbage for a family with 7 kids. Whereas a $30,000.oo mini-van for them is better than a Mercedes sedan. For me a sports car is perfect, but a SUV would be a waste. I like to do high speed driving, cornering, and accelerate quick. (Heck, for 50% of all SUV owners it is a waste. They are just followers buying them because they are the new fad, style. But hey, their money they waste LOL.)
Last, even someone who wants to play the most current, new game, will not have their computer become outdated in months. More like in 2 solid years yes. It will then not be able to play the most newest game. IF they are smart, they will first do heavy research - find out how long ago the best hardware, grapnics card, etc... came out. How soon the next generation hardware is due for release. How long ago the most high end games came out. How soon the next level of high end games are due out. GeForce 6 is out. Doom 3 is out. EQ2 will be out. All cutting edge hardware, software, and games. 4 months from now will be the start of the most modern cycle. Then it will be roughly 2 more years before it ends, and the start of the newest cycle of next generation hardware, software, and games.
Check the back of the store, thats where i usually find them. I really dont understand why people like console, you cant upgrade them you cant add new mods you cant patch the game... you cant do anything! But i DO want the pc game and console games playing one thats coming out... plays pc games! on a console!!!
The possible death of the console market will more likely be the fact that it forces console gamers to own different types of consoles. The software makers make the consoles and many times decide what games will be allowed for them. Whereas the PC market does not. Imagine Dell deciding only a certain game can be played on Dells? Or Toshiba deciding only a certain game can be played on Toshibas? Or Hewlet-Packard deciding only certain games will be playable on a HP? Or every single PC company deciding only certain games will be playeable on the computers they make?
There is no way in hell that the console market will die. The "casual gamer" overwhelmingly plays console games over PC games. The fact that there are so many people in this forum bashing consoles is because they are hard core gamers. The "casual gamer" does not have a user-id on MMORPG.com...The "casual gamer" has bought over 70 million PS2's and still counting. Also the fact that some games are not available for all consoles really makes no difference when you can buy a console for $150 new, and about $110-$120 used. I can own all three consoles, and 3 games for each, for the price of one good PC. Just so everyone knows the money put into console games far outweighs the money put into PC games...how many movie trailers are dedicated to PC games....I just went to see Spidy 2 and there was a Halo2 trailor. The fact is that in the current marketplace, console games are the cash cow.
One of the biggest killers of the PC gaming market is pirating. I know people that had bootleg copies of Doom 3 as soon as it went gold. Yes people do pirate console games but it is more rampant on the PC. Pirating has killed a lot of good software companies since C64 days. So software companies a going where the money is, which is console games and MMORPG's for PCs. You can not pirate a MMO, well you can but good luck trying to log into the server with the same key.
Consoles have become more and more popular lately. A main reason for this is the PC hardware being used in them.
PC's are not going anywhere. It is still a growing industry, the technology is becoming better and better, and there are loads of possibilities for the future.
I own a couple of PC's and an Xbox. I play both PC games and Xbox games. I like my PC better because of mmorpg's which have yet to come for the Xbox. Even if they do, I'm afraid voice communiction would ruin it for me. I love the keyboard and mouse. My PC games look so much better - crisper, cleaner, more detailed than any Xbox game I have. I think the games are more substantial - bigger and more complicated.
To me, consoles are more of a way to relax and play fun games that don't require too much effort, either mental or physical. When I sit at my PC to play, the games get me thinking, some scare the crap out of me (DOOM 3), some keep me so immersed that I forget where I am. When I play my Xbox I always know I am sitting in my favorite reclining chair with a warm blanket and a drink.
They are two different platforms that will continue to do well. I can't see either going away anytime soon.

Exactly. They are both good for their reasons.
I have a top of the line PC and an XBox. I love my XBox and play most games on it, though there are a couple games I play on my PC, it does not happen very much as I am between MMORPG's right now (waiting for a new, good one).
So, my Xbox, connected to my 1080i 56" HDTV and my 5.1 stereo system is what mostly gets played. With wireless controllers and the most comfortable seat in the house, it can't be beat.
People always want to compare the PC with the console and say the PC can do so much more. Yes it can, and that is why most console players also have a PC. This is not part of the argument. If someone did not own a PC and asked me if they should get a PC or a console, I would say PC.
But, if someone wanted to play the latest racing game, or latest Madden title, I would say get it for the XBox (or PS2), those games are just better on the console.
If you want to play a good MMORPG, get it for the PC. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes in the near future though.
Yep, for about the same money, you can have either one awesome computer with a few games or all three consoles (PS2, XBox, and GameCube) with a few games each. What happens after you beat those games on the console and you're bored with them? You have to buy more games. What happens when you beat the games you got for the PC? You can buy new games, yeah. You could also chat online, do some word processing, print out some pictures, download some free games, design a database to manage your money, write your own game, surf the web, etc, etc, etc...
The reason PC games will never die is because PCs will never die. Your Playstation is never going to help you write a term paper. You'll never communicate with your grandma through an XBox. That Nintendo isn't going to help you check your bank account online. So, homes are always going to have computers. As long as every home has a computer, they're going to keep making games for them.
The topic of this thread is not term paper writing on consoles vs. PC's. This topic is strrictly about gaming, so please stay on topic. I never said PC games will die. I was responding to the statement made by xplorer that said that the console game market has a greater chance of dying than the pc game market does....which is absolutely ludicrous in my opininon. Neither market will die, but there is definately more money in the console market than the PC market. PC gamers=hardcore gamers...console gamers=casual gamers. I think that anyone would agree that the hardcore gamer market is more of a niche market than the casual gamer market.
I wouldnt worry about it.I have an xbox and like playing those types of games as much as an mmo.Nothing wrong with console games whatsoever.
Although i think the consumer who has no knowledge of mmo's whatsoever has several choices to make. Why buy just a dvd player when you can buy a console game system that plays movies? As far as graphics go well thats just a toss up imho.I think what we should look forward to is the evolution of the PC and the console possibly into one "entertainment box".
I work for the 3rd largest computer distributor in north america and i can tell you 1st hand it is not that far away.
Think of having a "game system"that has a 200gig hard drive, the ability to upgrade the cpu,the ability to upgrade the soundcard, the video card etcetc. It would also serve as a "tivo"type of device and be the cable box along with it.All of these features are currently possible with a bit of money and some knowledge.
The xbox and the ps2 can play dvd's and have hard drives and now we can play against each other online.Sounds as if the evolution has begun already doesnt it?
Ive no argument about wich is better. The consoles are great at what they do.The pc is great at what it does as well.

Sure, why not.
Like I have said in the past: All they would need is a decent speech to text converter. Hear the people you specifcally want to hear and let the rest come through as text.
Originally posted by admriker444 Lately I find it quite depressing going into a Electronic Boutique or Gamestop or Best buy and looking for PC Games. It used to be when I entered those stores the very first shelves I saw were filled with new exciting PC games. Now when I enter, all I see are rows and rows of PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. Even older systems like Nintendo 64 have more shelf space than pc games. Will this ever change ? I had high hopes when Doom 3 was first announced that it would have a similiar effect like Doom 1-2 did. Those games made players run out and buy new systems or upgrade their current machines. Instead Doom 3 sold us out by going to Xbox too. Im not trying to bash consoles, in fact I own several going back to Atari 2600. Still, I'd rather see a store full of games for pc. I often wonder if games like Fallout 3, Diablo 3, and others which should be made ever will ? What gives here, why are pc games not a priority anymore ?
one word... " no "

Fact is that there are probably over 500 million computers in the world today (low estimate I think), of varying quality of course. I dare bet there are not consoles in the world to even dent that number.
More fact is that if you make a game for the PC the potential customer base is vastly superior to any console market. Even if you make it for every console there is you would not reach that market base. And that would mean a LOT of porting..
Even more fact is that the PC is superior as a platform for most every game, some sport games aside maybe. Say for the sake of argument a doom3 PC player could connect and play against someoone playing on a Xbox or whatever, not even the best console player in history could beat an average skiled PC player, simply because the PC gives you control way beyond anything you could get on a console.
Now the downside of the PC, as the develpoers often hint, is the piracy aspect, PC games has up until now always been way more vulnerable to to this, cutting profits some/lots. Now this aint true anymore, XBOX or PS2 for example have an even larger piracy market nowadays. Even if you have to "mod" your console.
Bottom line is, for the foreseeable future most people will have one or more computers at home, meaning there will be a market for PC games as long as there are PC's. (by all means a pretty long time I think).

Put a gamepad in the hand of the PC player and watch him get spanked by the console player. You may not like the gamepad as the control element, but when you play a console game against other console gamers, you all use a gamepad. Even ground.
Put a mouse in the hand of the console gamer and there is no reason he should be any worse than the PC gamer...
In FACT:
When I play against another XBox owner, I know he has an equivalent system to play on, which means the competition is much more closely matched. You do not have to worry about somebody having a better video card than you, a better mouse, a better keyboard, or whatever. Everybody is on an even playfield. Player skill is all that really counts when it is a console game. So, the winner truly is the better player. not the player with the best video card or faster PC.

xplororor, i think you misunderstood what i meant by those rules. I wasn't saying that you can't have or hang on to a pc and not be able to use it. I was just stating that the companies that develope the technology and release it for sale do so right now at such a pace that what you buy today a few months down the road won't be the "latest tech". Just look at how far we've come in the last 4 years. I still have my AMD Duron 1.6ghz system even though I built a brand new Athlon64 system just recently. Heck, for awhile , I still had an old Commadore64 and a 386 gathering dust in my closet until I had to make room for some stuff. You could still fire up either one and do word processing. You could even play Zork on the commodore64 if you wanted to. I was not, I repeat, was not stating that older pc's are useless at all. That is the nice thing about a pc is it's versatility.
I was also trying to get those that are younger than about 15 or 16 years of age to realize that it really isn't a pc versus gaming console battle as far as the gaming industry is concerned. Each has it's own niche and market where it succeeds and does well in. How many of you were playing on a highend pc or even an older pc at age 6 through 12. Most of us played or got into gaming via consoles. When I was growing up, consoles were really the only thing besides going to the arcade where you could get into gaming.
Both pcs and gaming conoles, along with the games have advanced hand and hand over the years. Just look at today compared to 10 years ago. Both gaming consoles and gaming pcs will be around and have a place in the market until some technology in the distant future replaces them. I don't think people who are arguing which is better realize that the gaming industry makes billions of dollars a year off of both gaming consoles and pcs.
Put a gamepad in the hand of the PC player and watch him get spanked by the console player. You may not like the gamepad as the control element, but when you play a console game against other console gamers, you all use a gamepad. Even ground.
I did not explain fully what I meant so:
Use the same example, but lets say they are equally skilled both on console and PC with same game, playing on same platforms the will win 50/50, however give any of them a PC to play against the other on console and these numbers would change to 100/0 in favor of the PC fellow. Point really is that the PC offers so much more then what you could put into a console. It simply is better in my opinion in all or almost all aspects.
In FACT:
When I play against another XBox owner, I know he has an equivalent system to play on, which means the competition is much more closely matched. Good point, one I hadnt thought of, this is indeed in the favor of the console.
As to sale figures I would not know, I was merely stating that the market for potential PC game customers is so large i very very much doubt we will see an end of PC games being made.

This may be true in the case of an FPS game where one is equipped with a mouse and the other a gamepad.
But, put them both on a racing game or a Madden game and you will see the PC gamer hooking up a gamepad or a steering wheel very similar to the one I use on my XBox.
With that in mind, you then could possibly put a mouse on the console and the FPS game evens out as well...
I really don't think the controls can be compared as one can be made to look like the other.
The only REAL difference between a console and a PC is that the PC can run at a much higher resolution. This does not really affect the gameplay. The resolutions that the console is running at on the TV screen are obviously good enough, or you wouldn't think that your DVD movies looked GREAT!
And the few games that actually run at 1080i on my HDTV look beautiful. I think the gap between consoles and PCs is really going to close when the next series of consoles hits the market. The next XBox (or PS) is going to be powerful enough that all the games can run at 1080i or 720p and they will look amazing.
As long as people are willing to blow massive amounts of money on gaming PC's, PC games will always be around. hell, my ancient GeForce 2 does a better job with KOTOR than the XBOX does!!!
I tried going to consoles and let my computer waste away, I couldn't do it. I gonna blow my cash on a new computer while my Gamecube collects dust until the new Zelda comes out.

EQ2 will be out. All cutting edge hardware, software, and games. 4 months from now will be the start of the most modern cycle. Then it will be roughly 2 more years before it ends, and the start of the newest cycle of next generation hardware, software, and games.

Why would I want to check email or the weather on my console? I can do that with my PC?!?!
Oh I see... The PC games are more fun because you can check your email... How does that make sense???
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)

Even with Massively Multiplayer?
Sure, why not.

Umbrood...
The console gaming market has been outselling the PC gaming market for the last 2 or 3 years...
Then it will be roughly 2 more years before it ends, and the start of the newest cycle of next generation hardware, software, and games.

xplororor, i think you misunderstood what i meant by those rules.

I gonna blow my cash on a new computer while my Gamecube collects dust until the new Zelda comes out.

i have all the game consoles there is ever since super nintendo though PC has been my favorite.. i just got the ps2 i didnt even buy 1 single game for it it was boring and i just used it to watch dvd's.... i was bored the other day so i traded my ps2 in for a xbox and xbox live at ebgames... man what a scam i hate it even worse then my ps2 and it wont even play DVD's i doubt i will buy anymore consoles for awhile.. im sticking with PC... the only games i know that are better on consoles are sports games... racing hockey, baseball, football.. but thats all there good for. ive had atari sega cd i got them all nintendo 64... EB games said they would give me more money for a nintendo 64 game then the ENTIRE game console haha. all these consoles are pretty much garbage since they dont even make games for half of them anymore.
I don't think this guy knows much about console games...
