That is the question everyone wants to know. Because in a recent article the developer said it was a marketing decision to go with fileplanet, so why did they use this build when the closed beta build is so much better? There has to be a reason and Funcom should just come out and say why, to help silence all the rumors.

I dont know why but I am playing the closed beta and it is better. maybe they didnt want to waste time with open betas at all and just want to release a good game . I dont know, but what I do know is what I am playing and its fun with littel issuses now atleast the first 13 lvls.

Yea uhm I was under the impression it was an OPEN BETA for marketing, I only started hearing the words "Stress Test" after so many people bitched...

Not being able to time blocks and parries is annoying too, its WoW/EQ without auto-attacks or good spec trees. Just not innovative, intuitive or fun to me. If I could do my combos without having to activate them, it'd be a lot more fluid and fun. A lot of times using an ability causes the npc to shift shields to that abilities attack side before inputing the combo, making it a waste. Not to mention everyone has the same abilities up until level 4 or so. Needs a lot more concept work.
I really don't see how people can fully grasp the depth of the combat system when they havn't played past the tutorial.

And there's a setting you can adjust to turn the spell effects back on, you know.

It looks to me like you didn't have the patience to bother taking more than a cursory look at the game.

The system is designed to ease you into the complexity. Once you're off n00b Island, you'd be glad they took that approach.

already pre-ordered and looking forward to it, and no you can't change my mind. i've come to a conclusion recently (mainly after having read alot of the bashing threads that come out for every single game over the past few years), you can't trust other gamers--especially ones on gaming forums (and yes i realize the irony). their views are often (if not always) skewed from their perspective, from their prejudices and from their desires. some just want to see every game but the one they're playing fail, some "test" games with systems far below specs or do not optimize the settings properly for their systems and complain that it's "unplayable", some are opposed to change and anything different is wrong--or vice versa everything is too much like something that's already out.

in short, finding an unbiased view of a new game on gaming forums is about as easy as finding a needle in a haystack, and as painless as cutting your toe off. i know what i like, and i know what interests me and excites me, and i'm assuming a lot of you do also--if it interests you enough to buy the game when it comes out, and you're willing to do that, then do it (i already have ), if not then wait and see.

This is exactly why I won't but the game (yet). I don't trust people on forums and I don't trust reviewers.. and I sure don't trust the hype made by the publisher.

But give me a proper open beta or a free trial and I might play your mmo for a long time (if it's good).

No I am not a Warhammer fanboy, I just am getting sick of games being released half finished.  Give it a week and see what you hear.

    Try before you buy.

It is amazing  you actually need to argue in favour of this idea.

Then again that is why standard MMO these days gets to the shelf in beta stage.

It will get better, cannot judge game before the launch, give it three more months, MMO is never finished... Yadda - yadda - yadda, I won't to try it before I buy it becasue I might not like it even if it is a finished product. I certainlly will not pay for the game's development.

Agreed with second poster. 13 levels of game play is all you get in this open beta. How can you tell what your specs will actaully be like if you havent even actually experianced them working against an enemy? If you didn't like the first 2 days or first few  hours of game play just because of the combo system then thats fine Its your opinion. Just don't blast the game about shit you haven't even experianced yet, thats just plain ignorant.

BTW - the beta is laggy, buggy, and crashes a lot becuase its an older version the then closed beta version. Plus there is a debugger running in the background. If you know anything about beta testing you know that all the info being compiled is to help Funcom build patches to make the game better.

I am surprised that people are still trying to sell the "the closed beta version is a better client' BS. They can patch the open beta client as easily as they can the closed and financial wise they really need to. Beside that a lot of us know someone who is or might be a closed beta tester ourself and are aware that the closed client is just as buggy as the open one is. The spin is strong here young jedi.

While I agree the game has a lot of potential, common sense dictates caution considering all of it's issues I would not touch it with a ten foot pole on release day however 3 or 4 months down the road I will give it another try for sure. That way I miss all the frustrating bugs and nerfs and save myself some cash that can be used for other things.

Funcom did a good job of recovering from the release of AO, it just takes them awhile to get it right, I have a feeling if WAR was not breathing down their throats they would delay launch till this fall. Well since I am not a WAR fan at all I will just wait and see if they can get this one right. Too bad too because after testing and playing my current game now for almost 2 years I could use a change of pace, but AoC isn't it....yet.

My take is It seems as if among my trusted sources the  opinion is the game indeed does  have potential but  it is not at all ready for release. No offense, but I don't know you at all and over at some other forums that I have been a part of for 7 or 8 years they say otherwise. I have gamed and been guilded with most of those guys and gals and have a lot of respect for their opinions.

If you are right then I miss nothing and can always pick the game up later on. If they are right then I saved myself 50 bucks and a lot of frustration. Like I said if the boards are filled with sunshine and happiness in June, July, or whenever I will give it a shot but right now I need that 50 bucks more for gas than to have another box join the large cardboard box in my basement  of games that might have been but were not.

Whether or not the open beta exists to be a "marketing" beta it is. I believe any rational person would understand that but the open beta hasn't even been out a week yet. We'll see how far it gets before release and I will consider that my basis whether or not I buy the game on day 1.

  • RemyVorenderRemyVorender Member RarePosts: 4,006

I'll be giving Conan about 6 months to hit it's stride before I start thinking about playing. I'm in the Beta and think the game's core mechanics are actually quite fun and even a little innovative, but the execution is still a ways off IMO. I'm not going to buy this game and pay to Beta test it.

I'll be playing the head start thank you very much.  I like what I see and I am certain the retail version will be much better than what I see, which isn't that bad at all.

200k for the first month?  Try 750k at the very least.  I wonder how many thousands of people have pre-ordered already?  How many people will be there at the store for launch?  How many people will see their friends rocking the game day one and go buy it the next day?  Out of the people here and the people I talk to in game, the positives far outweigh the negatives.. So, this isn't just my opinion.  Then you have to account for all the people in closed beta who will buy it.  200k is going to be surpassed within a week of release.

I will wait a month or two. Long enough for people to decide if it's worth subscribing or not. Then the pervailing wind will guide me, although I am awfully tempted to try it out because I'm dying for an alternative to WoW.
