I don't know what some people are smoking

Deathstrike2Deathstrike2 Member UncommonPosts: 1,777

Finally finished downloading the beta client earlier today, and have been enjoying this game ever since.  I've made several characters and am floored by this game.  It's amazing!  So far, I've encountered very few bugs, gorgeous graphics (best I've ever seen in an MMO), great gameplay, and a story that grabs your attention right from the start.  All the whining about instancing seems silly as well.   It's not game breaking or even very noticeable, and it certainly hasn't detracted from my gameplay thus far.

The game is fairly smooth on high settings (E6600 Dual core, Vista Premium, 4 gigs, 8800 GTX).

To be honest, I'm shocked by how good this game is.  With all the Vanguard talk and the huge number of complaint posts, I expected a train wreck.  Instead, I've found my new MMO home.  I'm preordering tonight.

Happy your enjoying it, maybe share a pint in the Rum n Rumble at release :)

Im sure that there are people out there with the technical issues that can be most upsetting, however I just find the whole game engaging. I still havent found anyone that looks like my character in game.

Good for you!  I'm glad you are enjoying the game.

Just remember, just because you get the results you doesn't mean that everyone else gets the same results.  People are posting their own personal experiences.

So please, enough with this "don't know what people are smoking" smack talk.  It is called trolling fanbois style.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Im also enjoying the game.I have a old graphics card and aim able to run on medium with allot of tuning between 20-50 FPS.I really want a newer card so i can run this on higher settings and ill be happy.Other then that everything seems ok theres a few small things that need to be fixed but nothing thats gonna stop me from buygin the game.If anyone can give me a hand im having problems with some of the textures theyre not appearing correctly and end up being just black and white checkers...only on certain things and not all the time.

System if anyones interested to compare with theres.....e6400 ocd to 2.6,EVGA 7600 GTKO,2gb ddr2,on XP.

Is the game free to beta now or do I still need a key?

    Shannia,

I was in Vanguard beta, and this is NOTHING like it.  It's not even close.  With absurd comparisons like that, I feel that I am very justified in my "don't know what people are smoking" comment.  I'm sorry if you disagree.  It's a far cry from trolling fanbois style.  In fact, if you check out my history, you'd find that I've repeatedly said that I will be taking the wait and see approach when it comes to new MMOs, AoC included.  Well, I've waited and I've seen.  It's shaping up to be a great game, and I'm a little annoyed by the outlandish exaggerations made here.  I almost gave up on the long download of the beta client because of all the trash talk on these forums.  Thank goodness I decided to form my own opinion.

While I'm sure that there are still bugs to work out, let's try to keep it real.  Put the crack pipe down people.

There are two major issues with AoC right now.

    1. the game is very fragile.  It needs the right drivers and the right setup.  It tends to get corrupted easily turning your play experience to shit really fast.

    2. The texture compilation is really problimatic.  Later in the game when you visit instances and the textures need to compile the lag while it compiles is VERY bad.  Actually far worse then Vanguard ever was.  This can make it REALLY dangerous when exploring the zone the first time.

The good news is I think both of these problems are likely not huge problems to solve.  The first issue is some straight up compatability and better error handling which I don't see being that tough to fix.

The second one I think might be related to the crash issue when you exit the game.  I think it saves the compiled textures so the next time it is much faster.  If this is the case it might be good.  This might be a tougher problem.

One other minor issues is the zone loading times.  They can be extremely long sometimes....

on the other hand the game has like a billion bugs behind the scenes that it's hard to tell just what impact they have.  If you are interested check out the file named Ageofconan in the installation directory.  You will need to open this file with wordpad.  This is a log file that contains all the errors for you play session.  Be warned this file can be very large.  I just looked at mine and it was 12mb.  One thing to keep an eye on is the oldlogs directory.  AoC creates a backup of the error log every time you play.  So this directory will grow endlessly large.

..."Put the crack pipe down people"...   Sound advice for anyone, lol.

All the same,  anyone who doesn't like AoC for whatever reason has become labeled a 'Troll' and those who like the game in any way are 'Fanboys'.

There used to be room for a middle ground but I guess those days are long gone and I expect it to be true, for every new MMO, from now on.

I consider myself just a fan of AoC but I seem to have attained the title of 'Rabid Fanboy'.  Oh well, whatever.

I mean it could be worse, in my eyes.  I could've actually been wrong in the information that I gained and decided to share.  .../shrug

Ethion, I havn´t notice any extreme loadings in this game actually.

Btw, I played in the Vanguard beta. I can´t understand that you compair it with it. AoC is a allmost finish product ... Vanguard was only half done. Large areas where missing mobs, there where basically only one armor piece (but with different colors), lagged more than AoC (for me), etc ... but I understand Sigil had to release an unfinished product ... had no more money.

AoC is just soo much better imo. It´s a cool and fun game.

How about accepting the fact some ppl don't like the game and maybe wonder wth your smokin as well? You probly liked Guild Wars also which is fine no gripe from me but I 100% HATED and still hate guild wars  The game play reminds me of GW as does all the zoning and alot of other things.Glad you like it but don't sit and whine because ppl don't.

You hate it. Fine. But don't even try to use bullshit arguments like "Instancing" and the sort to justify it. In fact, comparing it with the GW zoning is stupid in itself.

And on a sidenote: You might want to look up the word "whine" in the dictionary, because the guy sure as hell wasn't whining.

First of all, I understand some people like the game and some don't.  I have no problem with that.  I do have a problem with people putting out misleading information though.  If you can't tell the difference between that and whining, there's no point in continuing this discussion with you.

And for the record, I bought the first Guild Wars game and hated it.  I see very little resemblence between the two games.

While I do not agree with all of the haters here about the information presented....

I think that, given what the fans have said, the comparison is fair.  GW had loads between each zone, AoC has loads between each zone.  GW had loads to move into cities, AoC has loads to move into cities.  The only real dividing factor is that the zones in GW were instanced (which actually probably made the game run smoother than even what AoC is trying...but in their defense, doing so removes even MORE of the seamless multiplayer world and I wouldn't advise it anyway).

So, yeah...they have similar zoning loads.  In fact, I'm willing to bet they did so for similar reasons even.

I was reminded of Guild Wars as well.  The combat is obviously not similar but the way you move from zone to zone reminds me of Guild Wars.  I myself prefer less use of instances but honestly I don't think the game could have worked without it to be honest.  As long as the game ships polished people will learn to live with it.  I still go back to City of Hero's every so often and its full of instances.

     Love you long time!

I have to agree here...the fact that we can only see the first 13 levels is no indication on zones and loading, armor and weapons,...

People keep mentioning "on rails" or "same armor" or "having so many load screens"...while we are still in the first 13 levels..

I have accepted that this is only the beginning, and I am willing to see what is out there yet...

I agree. Some people just don't like it.

Well, you've stated your opinion and I respect that. Now, let me ask you a question.

Why the heck are you here posting? You've seen the game and don't care for it. Great! You didn't purchase and "waste" any money, so you really have NO gripe, do you?

I suggest you move on to another game that interests you and follow that. I don't see the point in continuously posting about a game you personally don't care for. It's done. You gave it a try.

Guess what? The world has not ended.

    To OP:

I won't call you a liar don't call others. It's a personal experience and all builds of the game right now there are players reporting performance issues that weren't there from prior builds. Not all, some, but not a little either. It's noteworthy for certain.

Doesn't mean won't be fixed or game sucks overall. Just hard to play with bad performance.

  • DomenicusDomenicus Member UncommonPosts: 290

Before stating anything, I loved the game..

that said I want to share the problems I had... With my rig, I thumbed down  a LOT to play it normally and, in fact, it was good (at some point) on tortage, but when the place starts to get crowded, the things do not work. Thats why I tried the PvP, and was dead before even knowing what happened (the computer freezes, caching the HD for something like 15 seconds, a whole time life on PvP). And thats a PvP with 10 people... I am wondering the sieges and big battles, how will be... And THATs my concern. This game indeed have serious performance problems...

    By the way, my hardware:

    2 GB

    E6320 (Dual Core 2)

    Geforce 8600 GT 512 MB

    Windows XP

    - all graphs on low except shader, ground render and water and details on ground, runing on 1024 x

Just from my previous post, I meant the way my character looks physically, facial features markings etc.

    As for armor and gear.

Im not worried with 1500 armor sets of 4-8 pieces in game...

Same old Avery enjoying his Hyborian experience, what a crime!

Same old Demz/mooon/sharpp (whatever you name is) who I suspect is an alt account of someone elses doing his best to put AoC down and failing, great have your opinion they carry better weight on other forums not here..
