The first thing coming to my mind is the song from the musical "Avenue Q" "Everyone is a little bit racist". And its true. Westerners are about Asians, Asians are about Westerners asf. On a small scale thats how humans are. I make joke about straights, within limits, and if ppl make jokes about gays (within limits too) I still laugh, even tho I am gay. I try to see this issue relaxed. People always generalize, but as long as its not nasty, I feel its ok, as long as we all can laugh about it together and its not mean.
So of course the question "where are the Asians" is "a little bit racist", but not in the mean way.
I have a Korean Bother-in-law, does that count? Ok he was born here loves Knödel and Sauerkraut is as German as anyone, heh. Either way in Asia they DO have a different game culture. Being a great fan of Japanese PS2/PS3 games and also of Anime I guess I have a more positive prejudice about "Asian" games, tho I must admit the MMOs from Asia (usually Korea or Japan) are too grind-oriented for my taste.
Oh and of course there ARE cultural streams in Europe, America or Asia. Its not to make them all equal, but there IS a certain cutlural gap. I spent a longer time in Tokyo, and boy I DID feel like on another planet! I mean, it was a blast time, and I loved those friendly ppl, I always thought we Westerners could learn a bit from the East about being nicer and stuff. But I wouldnt for the love of god live there permanently. We all have our socializing deep inside, I guess.
I always wanted to play a MMO based on the great Chinese stories btw, like Water Margin or Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but in a complex "western style" setting. Those great tales are much to less known in the West yet.

Is it bad that I know that Tordak's avatar is hypnotic spectre from MTG?
Lol, even I had no idea where it came from. It was just a pic of an avatar dump site that I choose. But, thanks for letting me know.

My avatar choice seems to know no bounds. It can fly(bonus) and it's well trained in PVP looting, lol.
Anyhow, games like Uncharted Waters Online, Emil Chronicle Online and Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE, peeked my interest the moment SandCastle mentioned them. I wish there were an english client.

I'm a Malaysian Chinese, and a frequent lurker 'round here. Yes, I dunno why MMORPG.com-ers talk about Asians as if it's like races from another dimension or something, lol. (Hell, Asia is so big. What's with the silly pan-Asian thing?) It's easy to blame "us" just because you played a bad Asian grindfest, but of course we all hate them stupid MMOs with boring droning gameplay. Come on, who doesn't? I don't feel mistreated, I feel isolated. Like how half-baked medieval MMOs would get featured here over the non-translated titles (Uncharted Waters Online, Emil Chronicle Online and Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE, anyone?). It would be nice if the "Asian" side of the community here is more than just digging around in the Open Beta forum for "rare Asian titles". Fun info: Just like high fantasy is being abused as a subject in MMORPGs, so is Chinese wuxia fantasy. Wish they would go further than that. ... more Steampunk MMOs plx!
Thank you for your answer. You just broke the stereotype
But still, the reason I raised this topic was that after I had lurked some Aion forums I noticed that some people were "afraid" that the game will come out as "another Asian grinder". And this made me wonder.
I don't know if Aion deserves to be called Steampunk or not but to be honest, I don't care. The game interests me and if it becomes successful I'm going to play it *shrug*

also allot of china is poor....gold farming and powerleveling is easy money
Also many Asians don't have a computer at home and use internet cafes where they pay to play by the hour. Even if they could read and write English why would they waste their time and money coming here? If you did come to a forum such as this wouldn't you pick one in your first language as well? I wonder how many Americans or Europeans hang out at Japanese MMO websites? Probably somwhere between very few and none, for the same reason none of them are on Western websites.

Most Asian feel the discrimination and they want to stop being "Asian". I have had people I know for years and they converse to me in broken-english most of the time. But when they get on vent, they start to fake that aussies accent or try to imitate that American accent so that nobody can tell where they are from. It sounds so weird, so wrong. They are so afraid of being discriminated they would betray their inner self and adopt a fake personna.
I once went overseas for a holiday. It was more of an eye opener then a relaxation trip because ....... I was eating at a restaurant with a transparent window, and was seated beside the window. Now a group of kids happen to pass by, they started making faces at my direction and then they toppled the trash can, took the newpaper crushing and hurled it at the window. It got worst when I went to watch the rugby match. You know how common is it for some countries to drink and get high during their games. We happen to run into these bunch of heavy boozers and they started to surround my friend and shove him around while hurling abuses at him. It is said that drunk people tell no lies. Could the abuses they said be counted as what is really felt about my people? Because of those experience, I am afraid to travel overseas. I wouldn't want to be sent home in a body bag with a knife between my spine.
I am not any asian race. But, I grew up around Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese. I think the main thing is that Asian Peoples are about like white ppl when it comes to race. They simply just don't care. They haven't had really any mass discrimination in the past because of race, other than internal Asian history. A person might get mad if you say something like "G**k" (not meant as derogatory, just explaining myself) or "I hate C***ks" (again) or "Those GD Japs", because that's referring to a specific race. Which is something else most ppl don't understand, Asian and Oriental is not a Race in and of itself (at least every single Asian decent person I know sees it that way) because each country's people are very different. I'm kinda all over the place here, but what I think is that it's because they haven't really been discriminated in the past for being Asian. Unlike... Black People, Jewish, or Polish who have all long histories of discrimination and tend to get offended when people talk about their race in a way that can be interp. as bad. (And rightfully so IMHO) Not only that, but when we say "Stupid Asian Games" we aren't downing their race. It's merely a clash of cultures and those with Asian origins in the US are not Asians, they are Americans. American is a culture itself. They may have Korean background for example, but that doesn't mean they grew up in a Korean Culture. They grew up in an American culture.
(Sorry if this post makes no sense. It's hard for me to put my thoughts together coherently for some reason tonight. lol. Lack of Sleep)

Being German I know quite well how it can be to be treated strange by other people. Often enough I had people refer to the Nazis, as if I personally had something to do with it. Some people are just jerks, but I also think a lot of are just harmless, and while some racistic words may be annoying, not every harmless stereotype is really evil.
Many westerners never really learned about Asia. For us westerners, we are used to the view we are "first world" and the rest is "third world". We just often overlook there are other places in the world who are not like in the Middle Ages but are highly evolved and have a very ancient history - in China even much older than in the west! I have read my share about China, and its funny, so often when in the west some thinking is quoted to "be the first to think about this or that", I smile and think, hey thats nice, but Mencius, or Confucius or Laoze or who has said the same 2000 years before!" But most Westerners are not aware.
I guess for Americans it is especially difficult to accept that USA is about to be no longer the center of the world, which they were used to be for such a long time. I am sure the economic run of China plays a BIG role in making Americans feel anxious about Chinese and Asia in general. Its a kind of "uncharted land" for them, culturally. Generally, let it not drag you down, its only those people's own stupidity and ignorance.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Well, the "asians" refered to there could be of any culture, actually. Whats negative about them is that they grind, and make money out of it. Thats nothing typical asian, its only typical poor people who are looking for ways to make a living.
I heard that Lineage 2, in asia, has no botter problem at all. Thats because they cannot make money of their own people. Its only the amerian and european servers which are overthrown with botters.

I know where you're coming from to an extent. My dad is Caucasian and my mom is Thai, and I've had a few negative experiences myself. None to the extent of your overseas trip, mind you, but debilitating none the less. I've been called a ch**k and a g**k a couple of times at least, but oddly enough, those insults didn't come until after I'd diverged that I was part Asian because apparently I don't look Asian, but instead a lot of people think I look more on the Hispanic side, especially if I let my stubble grow out. The point is, it's irritating to me when people label you based not only on your outward appearance but also knowledge of your ethnicity rather than the culture you're born and raised in. It's weird how often people brand me solely as an Asian like it somehow overrides and negates all the rest of my ethnic background. Hell, I'm also part Irish and people don't stereotype me as some rowdy fowl mouthed drunkard. I acknowledge the fact that I'm part Thai, and I don't regret it either, but I was born and raised in America, and it's the only culture and lifestyle that I truly know how to live in. It's just humiliating to be looked at like you're from another country by none other then your own countryman.
On a side note, I thought it was funny that the one experience I had where I truly felt like an American was when I went on vacation to Thailand, lol.
