If it's feature complete and ready to come out within 7 months?
Would you want to publish a game that has a reputation like Darkfall? At the end of the day people are not going to want to waste millions publishing a game that most people have already written off as vapourware or a failure waiting to happen.
It is to big of a risk, they have no choice but to self publish because any publisher with business sense would not risk investing in Aventurine. The most that could happen is that a small start up publisher helps them, but if they supposedly have money then they might as well do it them self.
edit: btw supposedly they are publishing themselves in just a few regions which implies they do have publishers for other regions.

Self publishing for Aventurine means Direct 2 Download. You can't do Direct 2 Download in "specific regions". That's a world wide thing since anyone can download it from anywhere... Unless they start IP banning specific countries.

On the contrary i would love to publish a game with a reputation like DF. Why? it pretty simple every1 who has been playing mmo's has heard some time of his life about DF, that equals to me like word of mouth advertising, and that as we know still remains the best way to advertise an mmo

Considering your apparent naivety or ignorance concerning basic business, promotional and publishing practices, I can assure you any chance they had of gaining positive word of mouth advertisment without actually showing there game has passed years ago.
Obviously the only way left for them to have any chance of successfully promoting there product at this stage is to simply start demonstrating it, like any other reputable MMO company does when there game is apparently this close to release.
But if it has been there master plan all along to advertise the game purely by word of mouth then they have failed miserably, considering that the majority of the people who have heard about this game threw word of mouth have only heard negative things concerning there notoriously atrocious reputation and/or complete lack of credibility.
Of course if they do release this year and manage to vindicate themselves and prove all the skeptics wrong then we will see if this will be enough to influence people to change there opinions, but if they only manage a lackluster or another delayed launch then its only going to compound the already dire situation even further (if that’s possible).
Anyway I doubt it considering over the years it appears they have attempted to get as much press as possible from as many sources as possible, its just there abysmal track record and inability to demonstrate there product has severely hampered there ability to promote themselves threw most mainstream outlets.
Probably why they have been forced at rather pathetic promotional attempts for example amongst many over the years rather dubious visits by anonymous members of guilds, appearing at E3 without a game and only a lap top with some screen shots and videos or other gaming conventions with empty stands but plenty of Darkfall t-shirts and posters, a brief google Adwords campaign or paying to represent Greece and Libya at the ESWC etc.
Tasos claim they have gone throu some publishers, but none have come up with a good deal for Aventurine (because they are new and unheard of). So last word i heard, Aventurine is to publish DF themselves, just as CCP does with EVE.
And seriously! Its 2008 now, why would a game developer need a publisher for? Just let people download it from a site. No retail and shit. Its the way of the future.
Because one of the best advertising vehicles out there is still shelf space in the software section of best buy, circuit city, fry's, meijer, target, etc.
Aventurine was clear: they wanted outside publishers. If they are going to self-publish, then they are settling for something other than their first choice. EDIT: as to the OP's question, there are some reasonable possibilities. 1)Aventurine would not relinquish enough control of the game to the publisher, 2)Aventurine wanted to keep a bigger piece of the pie than the publisher was willing to offer, 3)Publishers did not like what they were shown and were not interested.
I agree but I think its most probably a combination of all 3.
The publishers probably wanted more or some influence on design decisions concerning accessibility and general market appeal because they realized without changes the game would not be financially successful enough to warrant the risk of there involvement.
But it seems like the developers themselves have eventually accepted this considering recent disclosures about including universal banks, teleporters, pocketable mounts / ships and reducing restrictions on ARAC guilds etc.
The publisher probably wanted a lot more financial incentive to agree to publish then Aventurine was willing to accept because they realized the high risks involved concerning the game and its developers even if the actuall developers did not.
Considering the developers long history of making grandiose claims and apparent self confidence what ever offers where made probably didn’t pander to there own high opinion of there own capability’s and there projects potential financial worth.
But was based entirely on what was (and wasn’t) demonstrated and did not incorporate what the developers talked about during there presentation despite how much enthusiasm and dedication they showed.
And most importantly knowing that they where shown the stand alone tech demo that Asp previewed and not an actual feature complete working beta version of the game they where not interested in making further commitments.
This all corresponds with the various anecdotal stories that have surfaced over the years from sources purporting to have inside information about the reasons they failed to get a publisher.
the publishers have seen the game. They dont want to show the game until they have a good product to show.
Like i said before i talked to one of the mythos devs and they even have seen it. and he didnt say anything bad about it ^.^ i didnt bug him to much about it tho

the publishers have seen the game. And what does that fact that no one wanted to publish the game tell us?
They dont want to show the game until they have a good product to show. So by your own admission they don’t have a good product to show yet, they did not have a good product to show to potential publishers and neither have they ever had one at anytime over the last 7 years.
Like i said before i talked to one of the mythos devs and they even have seen it. and he didnt say anything bad about it ^.^ i didnt bug him to much about it tho Well if he didn’t have anything bad to say about it then I guess everything’s going to be ok, seems strange that he also did not appear to have anything good to say about it either.
Imho this game needs another 1 or 2 years, there's still no closed Beta. And as you can see at all the other MMORPGs, you need more time for betatesting, as bigger the worlds get.

Publisher : Sure we will publish if you show us some videos of your game
Darkfall : Lol no way, we dont want to reveal our game.
Publisher : We dont want to publish your game if we dont have facts it exists
Darkfall : Trust us man, we have the best game EVER created.
Publisher : Yea anyway, i have to go, gonna publish WoW expansion, at least it is not vaporwareiii
Fans : Can we see some videos or your game
Darkfall : Lol no way, we dont want to reveal our game.
Fan boy : Omg Stop asking for videos, the game is real !!
Darkfall : Trust us man, we have the best game EVER created.
Fanboy : You are so right! Darkfall rocks ! WoW killers right there, we dont need proof
Moral of the story is : Publishers are not as retarded as the fanboys.
