Roll up! Roll up! Place your bets - which MMO is going to be the biggest launch disappointment of 2008? Will it be AoC, with a lot of hype behind it (i.e. boobs and blood) but a pedigree that includes Anarchy Online, or will it be WAR, with a pedigree that includes DAoC, but also graphics and gameplay that seem lifted out of DAoC too? Or is there some other contender launching in 2008 that will set forums ablaze with nerd rage at it's incompleteness and ineptitude?
Comments
I pre-ordered both War and AoC. Hopefully nothing will fail but if anything I put my money on AoC. Still going to play it
I cant vote because i dont think either game on that list will Flop. But just to be a smart ass I voted Wrath of the Lich King.
Why do we have to assume any of them would be a dissapointment. things do not have to be mutually exclusive. It could be that every one succeeds
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
The 3 games on that list haven't launched. Granted AoC is only 2 weeks from launching it's not fair to call it a disappointment or failure. WAR and WoW's expansion are 6-8 months away so WTF?
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:
GW2 (+LoL and BF3)
I think that I am going love to WAR but many will be disappointed before really even giving it a try. I think this game is going to shine at higher levels with big teams working together. And before people experience that, they will call it out as being to boring.
I have not played the beta yet, so I'm just guessing.
Personally, I'm going with WAR, seems to me like its gonna have an easier feel to the gameplay. It has a massive budget and experienced developers of the game, which is probably gonna be the deciding point in it.
There will always be critics and people ready to marginalize any level of success as well as expound on any area of weakness. Any launch with a few hitches probably won't be as big of a disappointment as Vanguard, so if you take that into consideration these games would have to really bomb out.

Personally I think this just shows the attitude of the MMo gamer today,we used to have polls saying which would be the best but now we have which will be the worst,I start to wonder do gamer's these days want a game to flop more so they can get there post count up and feel important more than they would enjoy a game to do well?
Yep you might think this is a stupid question but is it anymore stupid than having a poll for 3 AAA+ titles which will flop the hardest?
I wont vote unless you add"I hope all do well" to your very scepict poll.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

The system specs required for AoC are going to put it out of reach for a lot of people. While Warhammer's graphics are not as flashy, the game will be acessible to far more people.
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

AoC is an ultra-linear borefest and WAR is just a medicore WoW clone (sorry, but it is) that sounds great on paper but really isn't very much fun. My money is on WAR flopping pretty hard, AoC at least has some class underneath it's myriad of technical problems.
This is just my opinion, don't hate me for it. I don't have a crystal ball or anything. Maybe one of these games will take the MMORPG scene by storm. Who cares! I've got some pedestrians to run over and bitches to have warm coffee with. You lot in the meantime, have the following waiting for you:
Achievement Unlocked: Disillusioned fan-boy - Waited 2 years for an MMORPG only to be disappointed.
Muahaha :P I'm only being half-serious here.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
I am sorry but dont you think the reason you have been waiting 2 years is that you havent given a game a chance or indeed MMo game's arent for you?

Because its easier to predict failure than success so if you go with failure you'll always find something to undermined or marginalize should the possibility of success start to manifest. Malcontents typically like the captured audiences that forums have because they can play the odds and expose any weakness even if they have to resort to sensationalizing to reinforce their position.

its easy for most to say a MMO is a failure. That assumption is based on the fact that 70% of MMOs are either OK, or are plain failures because they show nothing new or promised a list of features that later on got cut due to meeting deadlines. Another reason why most ppl here are calling alot of upcoming MMOs failures is because they are still waiting for that one MMO to grab the #1 spot. The one that has everything they personally want for a online game. The tough part is that every single MMO that is announced has a 50/50 chance of failing or succeeding. But for me to say a MMO is a failure would be pointless because it comes down to if i want to play it or not. I usually wait till release, try it out, and if its appealing or not then i make my own judgment then.
I am sorry but dont you think the reason you have been waiting 2 years is that you havent given a game a chance or indeed MMo game's arent for you?
I haven't been waiting 2 years for an MMORPG. Well, I did get kinda hyped up about Vanguard, perhaps I'm suffering from some post-Vanguard-stress disorder, but I'm kinda happy with MMOs as they are now. I don't understand why so many people are desperately hoping that the genre is suddenly going to change dramatically. If you don't enjoy MMORPGs, why bother wishing the next one will be one you like. Perhaps the game you originally liked hasn't been killed by it's evil developers, perhaps you're just tired of the genre and need to move on?
I'm not talking to you, specifically, rather everyone who thinks MMORPGs are in a state of ruin atm and are hoping the next game will be the holy grail. You can't have the holy grail, cos it's sitting on my mantlepiece right now, granting me eternal life, and you don't know where I live.

Ok my life quest will now be to find the MMo I (we)need, failing that hunt you down and steal the grail,I am easy either way.....

True
Spoils of War - The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it.
It's still a fucking long time till WAR releases so just play AoC in the meantime, what else would you play , WoW ?
I ain't going to vote since it's a retarded poll we as MMORPG community would kill people to get a very solid MMO on the market right now so there is absolutely no reason to be negative about any of them, with the exception WOTLK maybe ? lol .
And here's one for all.. of... YOU!

Yeah, fighting fire with fire as they say...
I suppose this WAR vs AoC thing is going to persist at least until WAR gets a few months of post-release and the hysteria dies down... But it's ok, I got the link bookmarked and I can go on like this forever...
Who even says WAR will definately come out in 2008? How many times have they pushed it back? I applaud the thinking of not releasing an incomplete game (coughvanguardcoughs) but I'm starting to wonder, "will it ever be ready?"
Perhaps Warhammer will be the biggest disappointment for 2009.......
None of the above. The Ryzom servers going offline. Second is Myst Online: URU Live getting cancelled.

In memory of Laura "Taera" Genender. Passed away on August 13, 2008.
As Funcom still holds the record for the "worst MMORPG release ever" with Anarchy Online, I can understand why they hide behind NDA for so long now. A close to summer release is the worst possible time, I mean WoW can get away with this, but a new contender? I highly doubt that. However Warhammer look like AAA+ quality plus with a 2008 Q4 /2009 Q1 released is superb.
I do hope all 2008 MMO be it is WAR, WoTLK etc. have successful launch and healthy life.
None of the above...
Darkfall devs have just put out that theyll be releasing inside of 2008, so if you want to see a shitstorm of epic proportions hang out at their forum during launch
Theres just noooooo way they can keep up with the self-induced hype that the community has generated, odds are it will play like Dark n Light ^^
*edit* dont get it wrong, im a severe fanboy myself and would kill to see it well implemented, its just that the odds are... slim
