As has been stated before, alot of people are used to "wow comp specs" where any old system could run the game. While that is great for business and for casual people, it doesn't do much for the genre as a whole (as far as pushing the envelope on graphics).
The truth is, many of us are going to go to newegg and overhaul some aspect of our pc, or just go out and buy a new one for 1000$ that will satisfy any game's specs for the next few years.
Even if you end up hating the game, youll be good to go for WAR
BTW, I happen to be building a new comp, to be able to run this game, for under 1000$. Anyone could do the same if they took the time and knew what they wanted.
Thank Funcom when you comp doesn't suck anymore

I'm also in the same boat, when I get a comp to run AoC I know I'll be good on WAR. But I also like strategy games, for instance, Medieval Total War II, and I want my new comp to be able to run that more than AoC. /shrug

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Oh... Medieval II. Great game, love it !
Not anyone can. No way I could afford to do that at the moment. would be well over a year from now to save up $1,000. thats like 2 an a half months pay for me.. and i have rent, assloads of other bills, a kid.. so.. yeah.. i hate when people say "oh just upgrade and stop crying about it". most people who could would. but not everyone can always fart money for games.
Personally, I find it funny...
A lot of people say the game will fail because not everyone can play/upgrade to play it.
News flash folks, not everyone can afford to drive a Ferrari either, but they have been going strong for over 30 years...
If you can't play because your system is old and you can't afford to upgrade it, I'm sorry to hear that. However.... just because YOU can't play doesn't mean the game will fail.
The true test will be on the 17th.
that post better not be directed at me. i never said it will fail. im sure it will kick ass an go strong. i was just saying im tired of comment like "just upgrade, its only $700/$1000, everyone can do it". just saying not everyone can.
MIght be the worst analogy I've read in a while. You compared AOC to a Ferrari? On that basis, how many of them are sold in a given year? A very small amount when compared to giants like Toyota, Nissan and GM. So sure, Ferrari's are high end, but only a small handful can afford them.
For MMORPG's, small subs is not desireable, and is not the goal of most developers.
I agree, we all need to upgrade on a regular basis, but it takes time for users to catch up in Tech, especially for a frill like gaming.
And not everyone can build their own PC's and must buy them retail, or in my case, I play on gaming laptops, which are never a home build.

"I can't do what I want because I have a kid." Here's a tip - stop blaming your kids for your choices in life. If you can't afford to play games because you are a parent, then you should be happy to be a parent - not sad that you can't play games. This is probably why we have so many kids growing up these days that just don't care about anything or anyone.
"I have bills..." Everyone has bills. You should have started saving a year ago - it's not like no one knew that AoC wasn't going to push the envelope (tripple negative - take that self-absorbed highschool English teacher!) It's not like games don't progressively become more resource acquiring as time goes on.
"I don't make enough money..." Who does? I'm a janitor that makes less than $10 an hour in a major Metropolitan city in the US. I have a 15 year old gas guzzling GMC truck that I drive for thirty miles every morning to go to work. Do you think I have enough money? No - but I started saving a long time ago.... because I know how to get what I want, and how to avoid making excuses for not getting it.

You are a twatwaffle, i didnt say shit about AoC, i could care less about funcom or aoc. that wasnt the issue of my post. my issue was people saying shit like "just upgrade, everyone can! people who dont just dont want to!". i get tired of hearing stuff like that. all i was saying is not everyone can so people need to stop assuming other have the money like they do. you should have actually read my post. nowhere did i say anything about funcom or blaming them.

You didn't really understand his post, though your points are valid. I agree with both of you; I hate people who throw away money like it's nothing. "Go upgrade you stupid noob!" Yeah, well, why don't you help me with that? IF I complained constantly and blamed Funcom for it, that's not right either. But if I say I'm dissapointed that I can't play because I can't afford the required computer at this moment, then get flooded by people saying "too bad, just upgrade you dumbo" then I'd get pretty mad.

You are incorrect gorguk, he is more intelligent then you. wear a condom next time.
actually saying not everyone can always afford to do it isnt incorrect. thats a fact.
"You are a twatwaffle"
Oh my god I love that phrase.
It's not a matter of upgrading your computer, it's potentially a matter of false advertisement.
If my computer meets minimum specs, then the game should play as well as anyone elses. Yes I might have crappy graphics and take a little longer to load into an instance... however... the game play should not be any different.
But, if my rig is above specs and I get 2fps on the lowest graphics settings, that's unacceptable.
And I got news for you "upgrade your pc" folks... there are a lot more "folks" out there with specs worse than mine, but still above minimums, that are going to have trouble, should the performance problems exist after launch. And those people are going to make or break the game.
thought id bust some oldschool stuff out lol
That's the stupidest analogy ever...
Driving a Ferrari doesn't require hundreds of thousands of your friends to have one.
I don't think AoC will fail. It seems like a DECENT game (note, decent, maybe even good, but not great, nothing quite as revolutionary as they have hyped).
But the reason MMOs with super-high system requirements have failed in the past is because the niche market these games are geared towards don't necessarily have hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people with systems that can handle it or are willing to upgrade their systems for it ON TOP OF paying a subscription fee.
Plus, just in terms of game design, even low-requirement games can be strained by the massively and online aspect of the games when you consider the intricacies required for advanced play. Especially in PvP and high end raiding.
A big part of WoW's success is that virtually ANY computer can run it and they managed to make a very detailed, stylized, distinct, immersive world despite the "poor" graphic quality. Love it or hate it (I'm not a big fan myself) it was BRILLIANT planning on Blizzard's part.
EQ2, Vanguard, these games failed HARD (at first) largely due to the fact that they were designed to run on computers that don't even exist yet. And, I hate to say it, but even Vanguard runs smoother on my system than AoC.
I consider myself about as representative as you can get of the target audience for AoC. 27 years old, young professional, "hardcore" PvP MMOer. And I just can't (or won't manage to) afford to completely upgrade my computer every damn year every time the new "greatest MMO ever made" comes out. It just seems so obvious at this point. If you want as many people as possible to subscribe to your game, you need to make sure as many people as possible can play it...
I just dropped $165 to upgrade my video card to an 8800 GT so I can agree with this. I'm debating burning some extra OT to pay for Vista and some more RAM to take advantage of DX10.
I'd rather not have to spend extra money to play, but hey, it looks pretty. I got tired of WoW's simple graphics a long time ago.
The 8800 card has been around for a very long time now, if you still done have one you either dont have a job or live in a box on the streets.
The main issue is the life span of a PC...
Everyone needs to take into account the one part that WILL fail in a certain amount of time, and use that for the basis of an upgrade...
The Hard Drive
Manufacturers standard lifespan on hard drives are 3 years...so, all PC's should have some type of upgrade within 3 years of purchase...whether it is video, sound, ram, whatever.
As to the person stating the game performing at 2FPS with required specs...this is incorrect. I have a recommended (note....not minimum, as we all know minimum will not cut it..all Microsoft products run like ass on their minimums) specced PC...and it ran the game at 40-60fps...no issues, and no crash...
The game will run properly as long as you have the "recommended" specs. If it is NOT running on that setup, then something else needs to be looked at...
I wish everyone good luck, and anticipating this game, as it is loads of fun...
Yeah, my box is next to a power outlet in back of Walmart.
What???!!?!?!
I have a very powerfull comp and can't have decent FPS in this game. It's simply not ready codewise.
So now that I look like an idiot, I'm going to shut up and drink coffee till my hair stops hurting.
Kids, don't drink and post.

I want to play AoC on high settings, but I luckily had to only upgrade my video card. I also upgrading from 2gig ram to 4 too just because I want to speed up loading. All I wound up spending was about 260 after rebates on Newegg. And that was getting a good nvidia 8800gt.
Just a comment to the folks who think you need to buy a new PC every couple of years or go out to get a new computer to play AoC.
The majority of computer users are going to go to big box store to pick up their new computer and think that its great because its a dual core or quad core with a huge hard drive. Of course when this get this POS home they're going to find out that its not good for gaming and they'll have to buy a video card thats worth just as much as the rest of the computer. Most consumers just aren't going to do this which means they'll play the games they can (web based crap or WoW). I wish AoC all the best but the community just isn't going to be what you all hope it will be...it'll mostly be teenagers or hard core gamers that won't be roleplaying or building relationships which to me is what an MMORPG is all about.
