I know SOE/LA screwed up things with the NGE and Combat revision, but honestly the game was going down before both of them ever came around. When I quit playing, about 6 months before all that, the servers were leaking population like an open faucet. People just gave the game no chance after the change so they could lay the blame sorely on the shoulders of the company.
I get so tired of all this CRAP talk years after it has all happened. The game was failing not because of the companies, but because the Star Wars franchise as an MMO was failing, plain and simple. Look at all the successful games and the genre they fill, it is NOT a sci-fi Star Wars type atmosphere, its a fantasy atmosphere that is popular.
SWG's population had been rising and falling and rising and falling all year back then. Some people were getting fed up with the lies, the 24/7 Jedi/BH overload, the lack of content, and the lack of support when they did bring out new content. Remember how "monthly new story arcs!" were dropped after the Alderaan flora/Deadeye stim business? So some folks said "Just tell me when that combat revamp you've been talking about for a freakin' year is finally ready. Meanwhile, I'll go check out this WOW game. It's shallow and cartoony, but at least it all works." Many came back to see the CU, only to find they had been bait'n'switched to a level-based game.
Thye would probably look at the new cartoony series, that actually reminds alot of Pirates of the Caribbean MMORPG in gfx... And think they can surpass Disney..and make a Star Warsy clone of that game heh
Why do ya want another Star Wars Mmo when there's a perfectly adequate one already ??
lol
I'm sorry but I would like to know why you find my post so amusing ?
Because the existing Star Wars MMO sucks ass.
Back on topic... I believe Bioware is working on a clone wars era MMO, in the style of the new animated movie / TV series. I suspect there are contractual reasons why it hasn't been announced yet, but I expect to hear something solid within the next year some time. Time will tell I suppose.
Mainly it's because I think the game will be a direct tie-in with the TV series. The animation style lends itself well to a video game. I wouldn't be surprised if the characters look almost identical to their big-screen animated counterparts. Not to mention the thousands of hours that have already been spent making high-res models and textures for every character, building, vehicle and creature in the Star Wars univers... which is the first step to making the relatively low-res graphics we get in a game.
I also think the odd nature of the announced LA / Bioware joint project points to something a little different than the typical licensing of an IP for a game. It says they are working on something together, and refers to it as "an interactive entertainment product". I know it's pretty vague.. but Bioware makes games, currently an unannounced MMO and LA makes Star Wars... what else could it reasonable be? Why are both companies keeping it such a secret? My guess is that they are waiting for something with the SOE contract to expire.. but it is admittedly a pretty uninformed guess.
I also just feel like the clone wars is the best time to set an MMO in... when there are supposed to be a bunch a Jedi running around.. when there is a large scale galactic conflict... where most of the story has yet to be told.
It's all theory and conjecture... and a fair bit of wishful thinking. Like I said, only time will tell at this point.

Plus, they can still even call it KotOR. Lest we forget, the clone wars is the last saga of the Old Rpublic.
With less than 10k players left and left with a skeleton crew. I would find it hard to belive that LEC/LA isnt working with a new Star Wars MMO. Either alone or with a third party developer. If they have learned their lessons. IT WILL NOT BE LAUNCHED IN A STATE OF BETA. They will take their time and make sure that the product will be polished and bug-free. And will it be another WoW clone? Anything other than a open-ended MMO will fail. Why? becouse you cant make a linear story with only repeative content as endgame content for a universe as wast as Star Wars.
Im just to play an updated version of my favorite franchise...I hate the NGE! I would come back if SOE put out "Classic Servers" with pre-CU rule sets.
I see people demanding classic servers all too often; even on the SOE Forums. One problem, the classic game sucked!!! If it wasn't for vast numbers of people complaining about it, they wouldn't have knocked it out with CU. The classic game, was not a winner. The CU failed so badly they were forced to make a drastic change again to the NGE. Which you can see utterly destroyed the game. The point is, SWG in general was an awful game from beginning to end. I garantee you if they opened classic servers, a small number of old vets would log in and play it for a bit; but seeing that everyone else on either is out playing the latest and greatest titles out there with better graphics and superior game play, they would abandon the game in the past where it should be and get in sync with the rest of the world.

Rules # 2, 6, and possibly 8.
The classic game didn't suck; and that's not what the numerous complaints said, if you had actually read them you would know this. the 250K plus players the game had at the time of the CU/NGE also didn't say this, and none of the newer games have close to that number of players.
The classic game, like all games permanently in beta, had problems, and in this case, SOE mismanaged those problems and never addressed them. This, plus the release of WoW, led to the subscription base falling from 350K-250K before the CU.
The CU did not address or fix the problems, and thus was a failure; the NGE shared the same problem.
Had they actually managed the game properly, this problem-filled game that was doing better than every MMO BUT WoW would have grown and thrive.
Instead, they chose to shift blame from mismanagement to design, and attempted to redesign it twice. Both times that approahc failed, and the second time catastrophically.
That aint gonna happen. Smed and SOE is hell bent on the NGE. They will never offer classic servers becouse that would leave all the NGE servers COMPLETLY empty. Maybe Badger and Obraik will still play? Its either a new Star Wars MMO or the flightless bird for us. We just have to play the waiting game and see what lady Fortuna brings us.
They are already completely empty.

Agreed. The original design was just about as close to a perfect MMO as you could get (and still can get nowadays). The problem was that SWG needed tweaking in several areas. It did NOT need a complete redesign...twice.
If they had gotten doc buffs under control, and adjusted the mind pool so that it wasn't the best pool to target, they would have knocked out two problems alot of people had with the game at the time. Did they need to demolish the game to fix those issues? NO!

You apparently read the posts without really getting their meanings... which is what SOE did, too. People are passionate about the game. Their messages should've been read one by one. But after SOE saw 'fix this', 'i want this', 'tweak this', etc.,... so many times, they gave up. They couldn't deal with all of the criticism or customer feedback.
It's Star Wars ffs. People camped in ticket lines for weeks to see the movies. Did they not expect some 'strong' responses or feedback to their game?
Yes, the players had issues within the old system, but not with the system itself. They had issues with various bugs or they wanted certain features added/fixed. They weren't asking for the entire system to be gutted or removed or replacedy.
The game was such a sandbox game, it was incredible. There was so much to it. People were exploring in so many ways, they were asking for a lot of different things. They weren't doing it to throw the game under the bus. They were doing it so that their in game experiences could be better than what they were.. and they were enjoying what they were involved in anyway, for the most part.
There were a lot of great things about the old system. I prefer it over the new system without question. Obviously, the majority of people who have an opinion about SWG feel the same way that I do.
We're talking strictly about SWG here. I'm not comparing it to other MMO's.
If SOE would've been able to listen to their customers and had the correct technical team in place... they could've modified the old system and brought it into the current state of technology, streamlining the system. They would've worked out the old bugs and done some great things for the game, including overall game performance.
SOE could've added all of the content they have in the game today (and after 5 years, it's not that much, tbh) + they could've done an art revamp to help with afore mentioned performance. As it is, they keep 'updating'/changing the system and using the excuse... 'we're busy fixing the new system... as far as content goes... we're getting to that slowly... be patient... wait... it's coming'.
SOE/SWG is a game where the customers are expected to wait for what they want, yet continue to pay to play with things the don't want/like. It seems like we're constantly waiting to be disappointed again.
Hopefully, the next SW-MMO won't be have anything to do with SOE.

I know this isnt very helpful, however I do belive that Lucas Arts has already released a possible end date for SWG, and I do believe that it was because of a pending title. However I read the article some time ago and cannot remeber it excatly.

Back on topic... I believe Bioware is working on a clone wars era MMO, in the style of the new animated movie / TV series. I suspect there are contractual reasons why it hasn't been announced yet, but I expect to hear something solid within the next year some time. Time will tell I suppose.
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
why do you think it's CLONE WARS?

I garantee you if they opened classic servers, a small number of old vets would log in and play it for a bit; but seeing that everyone else on either is out playing the latest and greatest titles out there with better graphics and superior game play, they would abandon the game in the past where it should be and get in sync with the rest of the world.
I would play on a classic server...Bugs and all!
?
I know this isnt very helpful, however I do belive that Lucas Arts has already released a possible end date for SWG, and I do believe that it was because of a pending title. However I read the article some time ago and cannot remeber it excatly.
