Why is every MMORPG today a Fantasy?
I'd like to see more Sci-Fi MMMORPGs.
Right now I play Anarchy Online, but even FunCom took the path of Fantasy of Fantasy with Shadowlands.
I tried Neocron, but didn't like it though.
I tried EVE, but traveling was too damn boring.
I would just like to see some more next-generation Sci-Fi MMORPGs out there like MxO.
It seems like everyone is following EQ with it's setting, because EQ was so successful as a Fantasy.
As of now I don't want to try EQ2, WoW, and others, no matter how freaking good they sound, because I am so sick of elves and dragons and such!
I would like to see some more Sci-Fi in the 21 Century. We ARE in the 21st right? I lost track LOL

I'll have to agree. AO, SWG, EVE, etc. are all more appealing to me in terms of their themes and possibilities than any fantasy game. (not saying they are great games or that fantasy games arnt great) Dragons and elves just seem goofy to me for whatever dumb reason, and spaceships seems cool. Who knows.

I think more sci-fi mmos should be interesting if done right. There are a couple of sci-fi ones coming out like
Face of Mankind, Citizen Zero, and Mythic's Imperator. I don't know how well Face of Mankind and Citizen
Zero will be, however, Imperator should be something to keep an eye on if Mythic is behind it.
I do like the idea of more Sci-Fi MMORPGs, just because there is so many options for Sci-Fi...with fantasy it always seems there is knights and wizards and hardly anything else to choose from..... Im going to use this post to share an idea i had... I was watching the old school Star Trek (IMO the only good Star Trek show....got too serious after the first show)...anyway i was thinkin, what if a MMORPG took place in a bridge and everyone had a seperate job, like a pilot(Mr. Zulu), and a scientist(Spock)....and so on and so on. Everyone could belong to their own ship, if you wanted to run a ship with friends then so be it....or you could do a random placement option and be put onto a ship with other people....and you would visit planets through the universe, and would be easy to come up with new content...and i believe that the roleplayin would be great, cause you would run the ship with other people you know...i know it would take alot of work to get everyone on at the same time and everything....but i think it would make a great MMORPG
For Sci-Fi, I am expecting RF Online, looks like a cool game and the graphics look nice. The movie was also cool with ships blasting each other =P
Sci Fi has more action and I like Johnny's idea on the space ship thing, I hope Vanguard could live up to my expectations ^.^
Edit/Note: Vanguard is Fantasy

Ragnarok Knights Supreme Leader

I was just wondering, what exactly is RF Online? Is that the korean mmo that kind of looks like Lineage 2?
Really, I would like the full Sci-Fi experience too, but patience has great rewards, just wait a while longer.

Yea, that's the one I was talking about. Actually, I think it looks extremely cool, but I couldn't find a trailer
anywhere. Anyway, I'd definately try that out game out.
Edit: Nevermind, I found it .
I couldnt agree more with you on this issue. The mediocrity of the MMO genre is at al all time high.AO tries to appeal to fantasy and scif fans alike. But a nanoboost is still a spell in my book.
Ive temporarily quit playing mmo's atm but i may be playing vendetta and imperator as well. Both titles look pretty original.
If you want to play a good space sim thats offline with frequent updates go check out X2 The Threat.Lots of ships the ability to purchase stations and a deep storyline. There is even an expansion for it in the works.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
Proof please. Unless you're counting ancient mythologies as fantasy fiction, I'd love to see some proof of this.
-------
Fritz Langs Metropolis was produced in 1927 im sure that predates any fantasy settings. The 1st time "Lord of the rings" was published was 1957 thats a 1st edition copy BTW.
I could be wrong but didnt Tolkien get the whole ball rolling here with orcs, elfs and whatnot? He pretty much invented the standard fantasy classes and races right?

First roleplaying game:
Dungeons and Dragons: 1974
First Science fiction roleplaying game:
Metamorphosis Alpha: 1976
The First known Fantasy ever to be "published" was Illiad and Odyssey. Homer is said to be the first tell of fantasy and adventures of all times. Many current fantasy creatures stems from these set of books which dates back about 800 Century B.C. Cyclops, giants, and Sirens (among others) were first introduced in this novel. Many novels adapt these creatures into their own fantasy books and games. And, yes, I would label this as fantasy as every major college university would label as classical fantasy as well and not mythology. Also, hundred of books were written in the middle ages that dwelt with fantasy as well. Some of Shakespeare's plays were based upon fantasy.
First science fiction book ever written was Metropolis in 1926 by Fritz Lang.
Isaac Asimov's first book Pebble in the Sky was not written until 1950. Three months later he wrote I, Robot.
Hope that counts as proof
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I'd argue that Homers works fall under the Mythology catagory more than Fantasy, particularly as it relates to MMOs which mostly take their basis from the Tolkein/Dungeons & Dragons/MUDs progression. Now if you're refering stictly to roleplaying games, then En1gma is correct, the first is Gygax's Chainmail in 1973.
As far as Science Fiction writing, everyone forgets Jules Verne, most of his works are listed as being published mid 1800s to early 1900s. The date I found for his 54th, and from what I can tell, final novel, LInvasion de la Mer is 1905. If you don't think Verne qualifies as Sci Fi, then there's always H.G. Wells, War of the Worlds(1898). I doubt anyone would argue that that's not Sci Fi enough
As an aside, while I was thinking about all of this, I spent a goodly amount of time trying to decide where Beowulf would fall into this, and I ended up sticking it into the myth/fable catagory, rather than Fantasy.
Edit to further address Enigmas remarks re: Homer. I did a not so quick search of college courses relating to Homer, and I couldn't find any that referred to it as Fantasy. I won't deny the influence of Greek mythology on modern fantasy, but when it was created, it was religious truth, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Funny, sci-fi has achieved more success at the box office than fantasy (Lord of the Rings, notwithstanding.)
My fave sci-fi mmorpg has to be Earth and Beyond with its original and striking environment, ships, music, interactive characters (at least initally before their cut from the game), mythos, culture, and accessible gameplay. Of course, it has lacked enough diversity and content at the high end of gameplay to the point of distraction and frustration. Other minor quibbles aside, it has been an enjoyable run with friends.
I haven't played AO in a good spell, and perhaps with its new expansion, I may take another look. I've sampled EVE, and it's not my cup of tea nor fun. Right now, the only sci-fi related game I have any interest is SWG: Jump to Lightspeed--it has enough features to recall the fun of X-Wings vs TIE fighter (and hopefully with a pinch of Privateer and Elite added to the mix.) SWG itself is just a backdrop that I could choose to ignore, and just concentrate on the expansion...but who knows, I may actually dock and venture planetside.
Although Tabula Rasa isn't truly a sci-fi game, more like sci-fantasy, I'm keen to see what develops now that it has been delayed to next year for release, much like Guild Wars, another game from the house of NCSoft.
What came first the chicken or the egg? In my opinion, I don't give a monkeys, I'll eat both!
Anyway, I'm playing DAoC at the moment and loving it due to its massive content. However, I find myself drawn to Eve as Sci-Fi is where my heart is.
I quite agree, there needs to be more Sci-Fi based games out there as there is sufficient games for Fantasy players but we Sci-Fi'ers have only really got a couple to get our teeth into! God DAMN, I miss Earth and Beyond!
Cheers
Gus
What we need are more Sci-FI MMO's that aren't really fantasy MMO's with a sci-fi setting. I'd like to slap all MMO makers and say... "Having the player run around on a alien planet shooting things, is the same thing as having a troll run around on a mid-evil planet killing things".
What do people want in a Sci-Fi game? They want to be able to fly around in a space ship and attack things in space. They want to be able to do the star trek thing "Boldly go where no one has gone before". Right now there is only Eve. And Eve is missing two very important Sci Fi elements.
1) Some sort of alien race.
2) Some sort of unknown mystery

The only game I have really enjoyed is Earth and Beyond. A tale in the Desert was a close second (lack of players caused me to quit). Tried Rubies of Evertide, Linage, Dark age of Camelot, and Anarchy Online. Liked none of them.
Here here! I'll lend you my hand to assist in the slapping m8
I think an online version of Frontier - Elite 2 would be ideal. X2-Online holds my only hope for this though. 5 different races, an intriguiing story, massive universe, 3 types of bad guys, huge big capital ships, being able to build your own space stations....

I posted on this site about it but there isn't a release date yet

I'm playing Eve at the moment but only been playing for a short time.
I like the fact that you can train while offline and stuff but its weird not getting xp and stuff. And I really don't like the fact that you can't set the camera to stay behind your ship, thats just wrong if you ask me! It makes fighting really awkward.
Cheers
Gus
Fair Comments on both points there. I was just saying that I'm used to games that you gain xp for to progress and it takes a while to get used to playing a game that isn't that way inclined. For example, I played E&B for around a year and adored its xp system as you didn't have to just kill stuff to level. Earth and Beyond was KING!
On the camera thing, I was basically saying that its just a bit shoddy that the developers didn't cater for someone who wanted their view continually facing the way they are flying. It's a bit like making an FPS without providing an option to invert the mouse or use it normally!
Also, the camera thing gets soo anying when warping to gates, asteroids and stations, and you aren't facing the place you have just flown to. EVERY SINGLE TIME, you have to rotate the camera so you can click on dock or approach. I'm lasy I know, but its these annoying things that put me off games so I have a right to moan
Cheers
Gus
I agree with the XP system, but then you do have skills training and cash buildup in the game.
Personally I love gaining XP and levelling, it gives you more of a sense of achievement when you "ding" and get yourself a new skill or something, in EVE it is sometimes like start training, go play another game and come back to EVE when it has finished training.
Great for the casual gamer who maybe enjoys playing 5-10 hours a week, bad for the keen gamer-power gamers who like to play 3-4 hours a day or more.
Personally, I am in the process of trialling the game for the 2nd time. The first time I tried EVE I thought it was far too slow for new players, travelling takes forever and it was jerky for me (probably my graphics card at the time though).
Enough chat about the small annoyances in EVE though, it is sad that at the moment there is nothing much else out there to cater for the Sci-Fi fans.
I use to spend hours loading up Robots in Sol to take to Van Maanens Star - putting 30m or so together (I wasn't TOO greedy) and whacking space senators with my 4MW beam laser on a Cobra Mk3 .
When I first started MMORPG's I played ENB and thought it was the best game for variety there in the Sci-Fi genre. It pissed me off that towards the end they brought out far too much that required massive grouping, being from a relatively small guild we couldn't compete but I still think it was the best balanced game out there.
As I don't like chasing dragons, killing wolves or chasing Clockwork Robots, I trust EVE will fair better this time.
Oh for ENB2....
;-) awesome discussion about homer and jule verne
anways i agree there some good scifis out there already
i played AO a few months and its a very good game that is really complex
but right now im stuck at PE(project entropia) and i enjoy it for over 8 months now..
it has his downsides(exspecially with the ammount of $ u can spend there) but
i really enjoy the toughness and the no quest approach of it ;-)
state rigth now is: 1 continent + a space station (new continent coming up next month)
mainly FPS with main professions being hunting, mining, crafting and trading
main aspect is real life economics and all events/quest are made by players themselves
except from some advanced quest(completing a spaceship + taking part on landgrab)
probably by far very limited compared to eve,ao and the like but hey at least its futuristic..

A startrek mmorpg would be cool but i can't really see them get it as a RPG.
Might work as a MMOFPS with factions ie federations, romulans, heck maybe even borgs.
But as a RPG can't honestly see them be able to get it right.
But yes a new mmorpg kind of like AO did it would be nice.
