Nah. SWG and Vanguard killed themselves. With SWG, it was a case of a developer destroying their own game, and with Vanguard, it was incompetent management and a lousy launch that did them in.
City of Heroes is doing well enough to be #5 in the NPD's rankings of current MMO subs, so they're not dead, but rather a niche. And EVE has never been a big, mainstream title. That leaves EQ2, who launched against WoW and not only had to contend with shoddy game design, but lots of disgruntled EQ players who wanted nothing to do with SOE. They've recovered somewhat, but they'll never be what they could have been.
Having played WOW for an eon and ultimately running 5 lvl 60's, then 4 lvl 70's I decided to call myself a sad bastard.
I am sure that WOW will ultimately implode, the cause being the miss management of the expansions and the lack of ideas from the developers. I loved the game, it was the best thing to play online by far, until they brought out the expansion which rendered the original game useless as well as all the experience/rep/items that you spent hours amassing totally meaningless. I had just spent a ton of hours online just to complete a 40 man instance and get a unique staff, expansion comes out, the staff now sucks.
Where it took 11-12 days playing time to get to lvl 60, it can now be done in 4 days. 0-70 is reachable by 7-8 days. What do you get when you reach the 70 milestone....? Nothing, everyone is waiting for the next expansion, because they know that all the rep, items will be worth nothing all over again. I have been sitting in limbo waiting for another game to come out worth the time and effort to play it, I hope AoC will be the one.
The advent of other comparable games will also help in WOW's demise but in the end I am sure the blame will be placed at Blizzards feet.
