I gave Eve a high score on the ratings yesterday so I'm happy its up there
I'm a noob to Eve as I only started playing it last week. I thought it was actually quite difficult to get into because there is soo much to grasp and to learn about.
Luckily, several players from the guild I'm in were already playing Eve and they were part of an Eve guild so they answered all my noob questions, gave me advice and so on. As of the start of this week, I was blown away at how in-depth this game is and I'm just starting to get the hang of it. This game seems to be a cross between Homeworld and X-Beyond the Frontier with a couple of distinct differences and additions.
The main reason I marked it so high is the offline training. I think this is fantastic!! I found it really weird to start with, being used to XP levelling and all, but offline training is a damn god send for my real life! Means I can set it off, go and spend some quality time with my missus and come back once the training is complete and set off more training!
I also play DAoC on the Gaheris server and love it too bits. I have a home network and will play DAoC on 1 PC and leave Eve doing jobs and training on the other PC. I couldn't do that with any other game other than Eve.
EVE is likely to continue to get high ratings simply because those who do enjoy it enjoy it a great deal. Eve is not a game that caters to the more childish crowds, unlike alot of them out there atm.
Players who enjoy a more mature set of people and a game structure that actually requires people to think are not likely to leave EVE anytime soon
You must really be a moron if you can say you "played" a game by loading it and uninstalling it after 20 minutes or so. I have never made a judgement on ANY mmorpg game out there until i have played it at least a week. Or maybe you just to Dumb to figure it out. Hmmmmmmm........heh heh.
To everyone who's ever wondered who in the world I'm refering to whenever I talk about "attention deficit little, angst-driven, pre-teen dweebs," THIS is who it is.
The quote above can be applied to so many things; consider these:
"I bought a Ferarri and drove it for twenty minutes through the streets of Manhattan, but I never got it out on the open highway, so all sportscars must be pointless."
"I went to college for twenty minutes, but I didn't learn anything new, so getting a degree must be a waste of time."
"I made out with this chick for twenty minutes, but it wasn't that great, so I thereby gather that sex must be boring as hell."
Come on, people, you can't judge anything but the title screen and character creation process of an MMORPG in just twenty minutes. Let's try thinking for five more minutes before you post retarded judgements like some of the ones we've heard here.
Honestly this is the most awesome post i have ever seen!!! For there is nothing that irritated me more that to read how someone tried a game for 20 minutes and uninstalled it..Hard to believe that thier are people like that around that actually are able to remember to breathe!
Guys, this is getting a bit personal now. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion and can do whatever the hell they like. I don't agree with the 20minute assessment though. Hell, it takes me an hour just decide whether I'm hungry or not, then another hour to decide what I should have to eat!

There has yet to be a valid criticism of EVE in this thread - that's because to say EVE isn't the best MMORPG out there means you have to name a MMORPG that is better. More to the point, you have to say why it is better beyond simply stating your personal preference. That's the challenge.
EVE has flaws, but the flaws aren't major game design flaws - the types of game design flaws you see in EQ, UO, SW:G...
Back when I played EVE everyday, I was part of a force attacking the Stain region. It was an 'official event' and a large-scale battle, with members of CCP playing Jovian roles. The lag was unbelievable (and I was on a T1 connection at the time). Battles like that are unplayable.
Today, the lag in big battles is still too much to bear. That's too bad, because battles like that can be important in this game.
That would be one of my main criticisms of EVE, along with the fact that, although the game-world is nicely big, it contains too much empty space. It is empty because it is useless - there's just no good reason to be there.
There are some other small points of contention, with large battle lag being the worst. As MMORPGs move away from their traditional RPG roots, I fear EVE's combat system will considered 'dated' before too long.
However, you don't have to participate in large battles to enjoy EVE and you don't have to travel vast distances in-game to enjoy EVE. EVE has so much going for it and offers rich and varied experiences for those who actively want it.
If EVE doesn't deserve to be in the top spot, which game does?

I played the 14 day trial of EVE. My review is in the list. It's just too damn slow moving for me. Does that mean it's worthless? No! There are many games and all have a certain 'play style', not everyone likes the same thing...
The problem I have with the reviews is those that REALLY LIKE IT ALOT, don't relate ANY comparison to other games they may be compairing it to. Give some examples...

I playd a trial of EVE Online and thought it was good.
EVE is good bescause the universe is expansive and the community is huge and friendly, Eve has a different advancement (level) system where you do not need to be logged on to develop your character, compared to advancement in any other mmorpgs. Eve really lacks in a sense of your character, as you can only see a small picture of your character, there is no character movement, you cannot walk around in space stations or on the planets surface. A game with all ships seems restrictive to roleplaying to me. There were some features that I really wish were in the game, but overall I think it is one of the better mmorpgs.
I don't think I would give it over an 8.0 rating, however. I think there are some other mmorpgs that are better. Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, and Star Wars Galaxies would be my top picks ahead of Eve Online, but that's just my opinion.
It doesn't bother me that Eve Online is on top. If that's what most people think then it must be a fun game. If there weren't so many other fun games, I would probably be playing Eve, too.
I don't see how anyone could say CoH is better than Eve. I mean, its an online beat em up, no community, no trade. It does however, have kick-ass graphics and cool moves and character design but that becomes extremely thin after a month or 2. It is a game that you can pick back up really quickly though which is a good thing I suppose.
I actually rated CoH, DAoC and Eve. I gave a CoH the lowest rating overall, then Eve and the DAoC but I had played CoH to death in the first month, if I had seen this survey then the results may have been different. I think the only reason DAoC got the highest of my votes was because I've been playing it longer and I'm more involved.
This is maybe one reason that a lot of people rate Eve highly, once you have the hang of it, you can see how immense it is. Once you get to a high level it holds your interest. Getting past that initial steep climb on the learning curve is where a lot of people just give up.

Actually, I'm surprised that Eve Online isn't predominately populated with women, seeing as how hacking and slashing is so downplayed and social maneuvering is unarguably the key point of the game. We've known for quite some time that women have better developed social skills than men, so I can see how women would not only be interested in, but dominate Eve Online.
lmao my girlfriend will only play Spider Solitaire, over and over and over and over.....
I tried to get her into E&B but she wouldn't have none of it. She liked the look of CoH but wouldn't try it.
I even tried getting her to play The Sims and she did seem quite interested when she was reading the box. She didn't even bloody install it though

Originally posted by rentantilus Alright, here's the simplest explanation I can think of as to why Eve Online is the best MMORPG currently on the market: All of the other games start with a big bang, then decline into boredom, where Eve Online starts out slow, but steadily rises in enjoyment potential. Here's an example: You install City of Heroes and wow, the graphics are awesome! Character creation is both simple and extensive, allowing you to customize every aspect of your hero. Now you get into the game, and the fighting is top-notch. This is the best game ever! A week goes by, now you've got some advanced powers and you're really kicking ass. A month goes by... alright, now I've seen and done every single type of mission; it's just a random factor of which thugs I'm bashing today. Two months go by... alright, now I've seen and done EVERYTHING the game has to offer... The excitement has worn off by this point, you're no longer distracted by the incredible graphics; now you're focussing on how limited gameplay is, how there's no real role-playing, and how there's absolutely nothing to do in the game besides beat up mobs. What began with a huge FLASH-BANG has rapidly diminished to a repetetive, boring game. You install Eve Online and the graphics neat. Character creation is alright, seeing as there are no physical attributes or skills, but the face modeling is sweet. Now you get into the game and... hmm... it's both overwhelmingly complicated and looks boring. They teach you how to mine in the tutorial... is that all there is to do? My ship kind of sucks, too. I mine for a while, do a few NPC missions and make a few bucks... hey, I just bought a new ship and it's literally three times as powerful as my last one, sweet! Now I can mine three times as fast and effectively, or I could pack this thing with tons of combat equipment. Starting to learn the interface and options a bit better, but there's so much more I haven't even touched on, this could take a while... One day I'm flying around doing missions or mining and someone approaches me about joining a corporation. It sounds alright, so I join. Whoa, space stations have corporate hangars where we can store shared ships and equipment? That's neat. Wait, it turns out the market I was dealing with was only the local region's market? Damn, there are thousands of stations in dozens of entirely different markets! A few months later, I'm getting the hang of combat (including electronic warfare and covert ops), ESCROW interactions, production (not just mining, but refining, blueprints, factories, scientific research, etc), and even inter-faction politics. Holy crap, this game is FREAKIN' HUGE. In short, most MMORPGs start with a pathetically simple user interface and flashy graphics, which impresses the drooling idiots and keeps them hooked for a few months. Most companies are still running in the old computer game market ideal, where getting their $50 out of you at the store is their primary goal; subscriptions are more of an afterthought. (see my signature) They don't give a rat's ass about keeping the game running for years, just breaking even with production costs and making a quick profit so they can move on to the next game. On the other hand, Eve Online starts out slow, but anyone can see that there is almost limitless potential there. You might appreciate simplistic games with shallow learning curves for the first few months, but they get old quickly. Eve's complicated interface, dynamic economy, and expansive structure may seem daunting at first, but after a few months you're going to really appreciate all of the options you have.
__________ When you see a new MMORPG, honestly think to yourself: "Is this game designed to EARN my $15 per month subscription with content, originality, and long-term value, or is it just designed to SCAM me out of $50 when I buy the box at the store with flashy advertising, biased reviews, and empty promises?"
Wonderful post, I started EVE 3 weeks ago and simply love the way the game is unfolding. There are so many ways to play and advance your character that almost any style of gamer can find a home here.
I am not surprised at all by the number one ranking, in my opinion it's the most complete game out there.
As far as rankings go it still boils down to personal preference, if your a vegan and I like to have steak neither one of us is wrong, we simply don't agree. I'll tell people I like steak and they should try it, but I'm not going slam vegans to make the point, negativity always comes back at you when its released.
Yes, I am very surprised that EVE Online is rated the number one game on this site--- and here is why. Of all the Massively Multiplayer Online games I've played, EVE has the most mature player base: a playerbase that would more likely rate a game accurately and fairly as opposed to an audience that would more likely go ahead and give a game straight tens by virtue of the fact that it is their favorite game. So, if we were to have a sheerly objective rating system, I think EVE would actually be higher than it is now in relation to it's competitors...
Now, on to the issue of subscriptions. It's true, EVE does not have as many subscriptions as EQ or Ultima Online--- but let's not kid ourselves. There's a REASON why there are vastly more fantasy MMORPG's on the market than Sci-Fi MMORPG's. The MMORPG population happens to prefer Fantasy more than Sci-fi.
And for what it's worth, EVE Online vastly exceeds any other game on my "favorites" list.
yea, I love that game but I stopped playing they patched it all wrong and kinda ruined the gameplay for me and everyone. only noobs like it because its the best they have ever seen. its at a bad point right now but in 6 months it will be a whole driffrent game..
i say it shoud be in 3rd now
but you have to admit it is an amazing game I was addicted to it for 9 months. gonna go back when shiva hits
I dont think Eve deserves number 1 either, imo shouldnt even be in the top 5. But i didnt think Rubies of Eventide deserved #1 awhile back either. So i dont really care too much whatever game is listed at #1, seems more a fad ranking than a deserved score.
I think eve still deserves its rating...imho its a great game with some superb graphics and game play. Also the community is great and the economy is totally is player run.. the only draw back would be the skill system which is good and bad....good in that you can train offline....bad in that new players could never equal on exp player but then again that has its good sides and bad sides....I still think eve deserves its rating though

Just proves that the system currently in place is not a good way to judge. There are hundreds apon thousands of folks that play MMO's. MMORPG.com has about 50,000+ members. Even if they all voted for Eve-Online as the best it wouldn't matter. As with the shear number of MMO players they wouldn't even represent a minority.
That's why I don't take any numbers beyond those from Hype seriously. Because it's not a fair or even correct representation. Of even 10% of the people that actually play MMO's.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
i dont know how they do the ranking .. is it the average score of each mmo reviewed or is there something more to it. ie if there was a game with 1 player who ranked it 10 would that become the number 1 game. this model doesnt make sense, so there must be more to it. I know that even though i am a total Eve mark, i still did not rate it all 10's, nor should i, as it definately has some down points. one thing i would add is that the Eve community, being slightly more mature in nature is unlikley to come to mmorpg.com and spam up the ratings in a childish fashion. I would surmise therefore that those who like it, like it alot, and dont mind spending the time to come support their game of choice on this site. Perhaps the less mature crowd are too busy trying to have fun to waste their precious time filling out forms and posting on forum here. Ergo Eve's mature audience outnumbers the other mmo's mature audience resulting in a seemingly skewed rating.
most important.. is its just a rating.. not law or a definitive reflection on the quality, or lack there of, of any mmo.

Actually, MMORPG.com has 105,393 members as of August 26th, 2004 at 3:42pm EST. And to anyone who says the voting statistics don't matter here, I'll add that MMORPG.com is undoubtedly the largest website for previewing, featuring, reviewing, and discussing MMORPGs, and with over one hundred thousand members, it gives about as accurate of a mass judgement as you're going to get on the market. I know, I know, no statistics are 100% accurate, but doesn't mean they're not valid. Hell, most businesses and governments base their entire plans and policies on statistics, usually of a much smaller piece of their respective communities than MMORPG.com commands of the MMORPG industry.
Most of the whiny little dumbasses who have posted here have ignorantly misinterpreted the proponents of Eve as meaning "Eve is the best game ever and if you think otherwise, you're a fool!" when in fact, that isn't what anyone is saying. We completely understand that some people don't like Eve, but the polls say that most people who have experienced it do.
Actually, first you should try explaining how Rubies of Eventide reached #1 here before calling everyone that disagrees with Eve reaching #1 a dumbass. Anyone thats played RoE, should have enough common sense to know its not even close to the best mmorpg out. Its great for being a free game, therefore its very difficult to criticize a free game thats better than most other free games out ther, but lets be realistic, its not even close to #1 in terms of all mmorpgs.
What seems to happen here is free trials become a fad. RoE was a big deal for a week or two because it was now free and had just reopened to the public. So alot of people here tried it and voted it #1, including quite a few posts on the forums regarding the game. Same thing with Eve, take a look at the front page, the biggest ad seems to be for Eve. Alot of people have tried or are trying the free trial, and theres something said for pupply love of a new game. In anycase, theres a consistency here in free trial = #1 game to some degree. Eve may be a decent space sim, but i'd hardly call it the #1 mmorpg out. Nor would i take the poll seriously, given the history of the poll leaning on free trials and recent fads in regards to the board.
Imo, the best mmorpg out would probably be measured by subscription base since anyting otherwise is just subjective opinion based on minority subscribers. So i guess it could still be EQ, or maybe CoH the way that game is growing. I'm not sure where DAOC sits but i believe they've been losing subscribers. Alot of people talk bad about EQ, but they cant argue with the subscription and popularity of the game. Personally, its one of the better mmorpg's i've played and i've played most of them. I'm not a big fan of SoE, but I will say i had a greeat time in EQ for about 2 years and have no regrets. What makes me laugh are the ones who had multiple lvl 60+'s, played it for 3+ years, and then act like its the worst game they've ever played I think CoH deserves alot of credit as well, its a different style mmorpg thats more action-based than the mmorpg's we're accustomed to. It seems to reach a broader audience, catering to people iinto rpg's, fps's, and people into superheroes. It lacks too much in the depth dept for me since i love the depth and multifacetedness most mmorpg's bring, but i definitely give CoH credit for not making another clone mmorpg, and they have a very customer-friendly design team thats very open with its players. Thats more than i can say for alot of other mmorpg Devs
While i agree with the original poster here, (the real time skill system really disagrees with me), careful what u say about EVE unless u like flaming. heheh...mmorpg.com has alot of EVE supporters.
I have 3rd degree burns from talking smack about EVE
I agree free trials have huge influence on the review scores here more people try the game for the trial get excited like it and give it a good review without waiting for their brains to balance out after trying the game for a few more weeks. I did this with eve i think i gave it an 8ish score. Got burnt out on it a few days later. Damn jumping just takes too long and skilling does too, makes me feel like im playing the catch up game constantly. Though i can understand why some people like it. Also the lack of twich combat pissed me off.

And for what it's worth, EVE Online vastly exceeds any other game on my "favorites" list.
yea, I love that game but I stopped playing they patched it all wrong and kinda ruined the gameplay for me and everyone. only noobs like it because its the best they have ever seen. its at a bad point right now but in 6 months it will be a whole driffrent game..
i say it shoud be in 3rd now
but you have to admit it is an amazing game I was addicted to it for 9 months. gonna go back when shiva hits

well, that's how the people here have voted.
Also a good 80% of these posts were for EVE...so the responses on the forums almost reflects the score given it.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
__________
When you see a new MMORPG, honestly think to yourself: "Is this game designed to EARN my $15 per month subscription with content, originality, and long-term value, or is it just designed to SCAM me out of $50 when I buy the box at the store with flashy advertising, biased reviews, and empty promises?"
