Most veteran mmoers will understand where im coming from on this.

One of my new rules is to never buy a new mmo without first trying it with a buddy key and/or free trial. So if anyone would be kind enough to send one to arobi@eastlink.ca or pm that would great.

Thanks.

Since the buddy keys won't be activated until the servers are stable for the paying customers, your best bet is to watch a friend of yours play (or as said friend to let you play for a while).

I can see where you're coming from but I would recommend the game without hesitation. It is shaping up to be something to behold.

  • snikwadsnikwad Member Posts: 40

I think its a pretty easy question.

What game are you playing right now? If you are bored with the other MMO's then jump right in and dont worry about the 40 bucks. If you are currently pretty happy with a game you are playing then just wait it out.

  • Experimemt13Experimemt13 Member Posts: 188

I agree with Mock... Looks like the wait was worth it.

Thanks for all the replys everyone. Currently I am playing Lotro but im just getting bored of it, unfortuneatly most mmos cant hold me for more then 3 months. My first 3d mmo was Daoc and I played that for quite awhile, you never get that first mmo feeling back though. Besides that the only other mmo that I truly loved was pre-cu SWG but I wont get into what happened there most know already.

Anyway I think I will just check out some reviews and watch the boards for the next couple days and if everything looks good as I have read so far I will pick it up, I dont expect a free trial for a few months.

    LET THE PAIN GO!!!!!!

I Had So Much Hate. but Now I am playing AoC...it feels soooooo Good

  • openedge1openedge1 Member Posts: 2,582

I look at it this way

With the unique beginning of the game having a single player aspect, for the cost of any other single player game, you can have 30 days of non-stop fun just playing through the Destiny Quest. About the same amount of fun as any other single player game..

If by that time you decide it does not warrant the monthly fee...you lost nothing as the starting game is that good.

If I do not go beyond my 30 days, my 50 bucks for the box was worth every penny right now, so, I lost nothing..

    It is awesome fun..

Time to go rate this bad boy!

If you are playing LOTRO then you deserve to give this game a chance...LOTRO is nothing compared to the excitement of this title...

Graphically speaking it takes LOTRO's landscapes and kicks it up a notch and the models for your character are the best available of any game. And the combat is a dream with no time to rest on your laurels...if you don't stay on your toes, you WILL die...and the fatalities never get old...

And with the unique death system, where when you die, you have a 30 minute debuff, but if you make a corpse run to a tombstone, it removes the debuff,...I consider it the best of both worlds...death does not make you hate death...but, it also means you do not want to die over and over...

It takes a diablo action game, adds the MMO element, upgrades the graphics and fun factor, and gives you a great story to boot.

I know how you feel =( I would give you one if I had it, but I just got laid off from my job so I can't even afford the game for a week or two.

Waiting for my own buddy pass :)

I'm actually like you.  I don't last too long with MMO's.  Personally, I just don't handle grinding well at all.  Luckily, AoC has a ridiculous amount of pretty fairly well written quests that should hold your interest for a while.

What bored me about the game (level 58 Demonologist in closed beta), is that there aren't too many choices of where to level at, and it gets worse, the higher up you get.  I personally wanted to see more level x-x+10 zones, e.g. level lvl 60-70).  There was only 1-2 level 50-60 zones, and same for many other level ranges.  I think that really killed the games' replay value for ME.

Unlike when I played EQ, even at ship time, the game shipped with a ton of zones.  The expansions added a whole lot more.  Well, I could be off a bit here.  I'm going back 10 years to mainly my 2nd MMO.  UO was my first and that had a zillion different places to go level at.  I loved UO's open areas to level at.  You're not going to find that with AoC, as I've stated above.

Sorry but I take exception to this.

First of all, they are not really comparable. LotRo is primarily a PvE game with PvP for those who want it in a seperate area. AoC is primarily a PvP game, with most of the end game focusing directly on large scale PvP (which was removed from the game - now its max 48 vs 48)

LotRo may be "nothing compared to this title" in YOUR opinion but I have to say, LotRo had very few flaws even before it was launched and the launch was perfect (probably the best in MMO history I would say). AoC's launch has been, in a word, atrocious!

The AoC devs have made several snidey comments concerning LotRo and its pretty weak to be honest with you. One of the best ones I heard was (not verbatim) but something along the lines of "we will be the only MMO to have DX10 at launch, unlike other games that added it later". That worked out well.

It sounded like one of the MANY falsehoods associated with this product and its release. They obviously knew a while ago that they were not going to have DX10 at launch but didnt bother saying anything until 2 days before launch.

Funcom strike me as a bunch of liars who promised many things and failed to deliver on launch day. I dont hold it against anyone who enjoys this game because at the end of the day thats all that counts. BUT, trying to imply that AoC is somehow "better" than other, more established games considering the current state of AoC is pretty weak.

Enjoy your gaming, whatever it is you choose to play.

I think the main reason LOTRO does not have many flaws is the fact it is based on an older engine (AC2) and really did not take any strides to do anything different than any other game on the market. It's copycat feel makes for an easier game to launch as all of the content styles and gameplay mechanics have been done before.

As well, the content in LOTRO does nothing to garner any excitement...at least for myself, and many others...as in the OP note of "bored" with LOTRO

Stability does not equal a great game...and LOTRO is not a "great" game...it is ok in my book is all..

AoC may have flaws, but the fact they are willing to make advances to the genre with story, graphics and gameplay, I am willing to give them some growing room..

  • SharkypalSharkypal Member Posts: 1,137

Sorry, what advances? Most of the "revolutionary" stuff has either been delayed or removed. Instances everywhere and invisible walls? Yah, very revolutionary. Im not saying you cant like it but your original post would have been far better if you hadnt bothered trying to tear into LotRo.

Lotro does not use the G2 engine, it uses the G3 engine so you should maybe get your facts straight. You and "many other people" may find LotRo boring, similarly, myself and "many other people" enjoy it.

My point stands, enjoy AoC but dont try to tear down a far more polished and professionally released game in the process. LotRo is what it is but it had a successful launch and has been consistently well maintained and updated.

So AoC is a PvP game and LotR is a PvE game?

Ok, AoC has like 10 (correct me if I'm wrong)  endgame dungeons.

How much endgame PvE content did LotR have at launch?

    Pigeonholing much?

there's always the choice to roll on a PVE server, PLENTY of pve content for a fresh title.

Also...someone said something about "invisible walls"...if you find one, bug report it, as they were removed long ago. They were originally in place in beta to keep people from wandering into areas of the game that weren't finished yet.

It's clear to me that someone around here has never played the game, and is only quoting things that they've heard from other sources long ago.

About LOTRO...I played it for a few months myself. Wasn't bad. AoC has the great quests of LOTRO, but taken to another level. And I'm talking about the GOOD quests..not the 100000000000 "Kill 20 boars" quests that bog LoTRO down.

Some of the quests later in the game will actually effect you emotionally...give you a reason to hate the mobs you are about to slaughter, or a reason to care about the person you are about to help. This is a huge step forward IMO, an MMO that actually makes you feel like you have a reason for what you are doing.

I'm posting because I do know where your coming from.  Burned just recently on the epic failure PotBS, but many times in the past as well.  I was going to take a wait and see approach for AoC, but after seeing how its going already I had the feeling I might not be able to find a copy on the shelf when I finally decided to jump.

...So I just went out and picked up a copy today.  This seems like a great game even if it doesn't keep you hooked for the long term.

See the problem with guys like you (and Im assuming you're quite young) is that you cant just say you like one game without trying to put another one down. I have in fact played AoC, didn't like it, didn't buy it but unlike yourself and many of the other children around here I dont feel the need to attack other people's preferences, I simply enjoy the game I am currently playing.

Its kind of sad that instead of just saying "I like AoC and I enjoy playing it", it has to be "I like AoC and game X sucks". At the end of the day it is all subjective anyway, it is purely YOUR opinion. Enjoy your gaming and stop attacking others because they dont happen to like the same thing you do.

    ah, I dunno...is pushing 40 considered young?

I'm not bashing LOTRO, m8. Look at my post history if you think I am...I liked the game, a lot. However, I must constructively criticise the fact that too many quests involve killing boars, bears, and wolves, ad nauseum.

Somone mentioned LOTRO, as a comparison point. I simply was addressing that. Sorry if you took me the wrong way.

First...why would you assume this person is "young"? That is some weird logic son...

I am 45 and will be 46 this year....so, I have been put into this category?...are you my missing Grandpa?

As to the "comparisons"...accept that it will be done..."old timer"...

Right now the market is flush with many MMO's...some good...(WoW, EQ2, AoC)...some not so good (Tabula Rasa, PotBS and LOTRO) and some downright awful...(Vanguard)

And it will be hard not to make comparisons.

The fact remains that the last "stable" and well done MMO was LOTRO...but, it also has so many faults...but you deal with it...I play EQ2, and can find many issues with that game..I played Guild Wars, WoW...etc...I can find fault with all of them...as no one is perfect...

Neither is AoC...but they most certainly got things right...and one is "excitement"...which is missing in LOTRO...which is my opinion...

I just answered the other posters comment about LOTRO...so, try not to get too defensive (which seems to happen with ALL LOTRO players...they seem so protective of LOTRO...like it is their child...lol...)

Listen "Son", Again, this is all YOUR opinion. I'm not getting defensive. I got annoyed because you couldnt just talk about AoC, you HAD to diss LotRo in the process. Ok, I was wrong about your age but there are plenty of 40 somethings that take it upon themselves to act between 15 and 18.

Yes, comparisons will be made. Unfortunately by people who are heavily biased and unobjective. The fact remains that they are two very different games. I won't enter into a debate about why but they were aimed at 2 VERY different audiences.
