It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

This is such a sad state of affairs.

I happily shelled out £35 today. After a few hours of installation and patching - I was very excited to see what AoC had to offer.

And 7 hours and 3 characters later: My cancellation reason to Funcom:

Extremely repetitive. No freedom of movement nor exploration. No way to skip cut-scenes. Cringe when I have to create chars - story extremely linear. TERRIBLE voice acting and accents. Non fluid char movements and control response.

Makes me sad. :(

Basically its a bad version of Guild Wars with an enhanced LOTR-ish feel with very awkward arcade key-mashing. Looks and feels good initially - wears of very quickly.

On the plus side: Good gfx. Good music.

Sigh. Flame me all you want, but  when you have played lot of MMOs as I have, you know can tell a true gem from the rest.

Regards.

Not going to flame you mate, but since you didn't even take enough time to find out that you can readily skip all cut-scenes, I suppose you didn't give the game any chance in the first place. Which makes me wonder why you bought it.

All your other points are based on personal preference. So, sad, but as I keep saying, AoC is not for everyone. Hope you find a game more to your liking...and where you actually bother to try things out.

1-40 is enjoyable I think. the game still has that fresh sense.

But after 40 the game takes a nosedive. You allow people to level quickly and your 40+ leveling content sucks. Field of the dead is a disaster but you ahve to go there or grind.

I enjoyed tortage greatly and I like leveling and playing around with classes, but if improvements aren't made to performance before my 30 days, I'm cancelling. Game isn't good enough for me to want to play at 10-15 fps, or about 5 in field of the dead.

/sign for OP canceled after getting to level 30 and yes you can skip cut scenes but that doesn't really matter.

After you leave Tortage the game is just different zones and they aren't linear at all. I promise.

Depends what you mean by linear? You can traverse hills to get from point A to point B. It's not like you can only take roads.

You have 3 zones to choose from after leaving tortage, so there's some freedom in the order you do things. So I disagree that it's linear. But there isn't much in the zones that isn't used for something or some quest. I agree there isn't a whole lot to just explore. Your quests pretty much take you everywhere so maybe that's why it feels so linear.

I think the linear aspect is a bit overrated. My only complaint is I wish they made it a little easier to climb the steeper  hills. Also, you should be able to fall a longer distance I think.

It takes about 6 hours give or take some to reach level 20.  Levels 1-5 are straight up linear because you basically learn the basics of the game in those levels.  6-20ish have 2 sides ... the nightime Destiny Quests and the daytime general quests.  The Destiny Quests are linear because they are part of a story that immerses you into the world.  The general quests have some interesting story lines such as Gone with the Wine.  They are semi-linear but not really.  They are basically your normal MMO type quests.

To skip cutscenes, press F10 and look for them.  They are the last choice on one of those pages.  While you are there, look around.  You might find other things you may want to change.

The voice acting, cringing when you create characters, movement and response are all really your own personal opinion.  The game is fine for me.  All that you listed as bad, doesnt effect me. To each his own right?

As for the no freedom nor exploration ... total BS.  That just proves to me that your 7 hours had nothing to do with lvls 20 and higher.  All you did was play Tortage.  I have explored many areas even way before my level was high enough to do anything.  I died many deaths along with some friends because we wanted to explore.  It was fun.

This game is just an MMORPG like many other games.  It has its differences like the fun combat system and the beautiful graphics, but it is also a quest driven system just like all the others.  This is not a bad thing, just dont expect the holy grail here.  Have fun and enjoy.  If this game isnt for you, have fun somewhere else.  Easy as that.

What attracted you to the game in the first place? All the stuff you said was available online.

I am still up in the air about this game.  I love the graphics(run everything on high).  However, I have had some problems with customer service.  Also, at least as Cimmarian, there is no voice acting once you leave Tortage.  I think it has alot of potential; if it doesn't get better by the time WAR is out, I might be gone.

The only voice acting after tortage are your destiny quests. So at level 30 that quest line will have voice acting.

And tbh, the rolling 'Rs' were extremely irritating. I didn't mind the accents but the rolling R's made me want to punch my monitor.

Thanks Anlar, did not know that.  Only recently got out of Tortage, wish they had voice acting throughout though - adds alot to the game.

It's easy to understand why there isn't. That is a TON of voice acting and very expensive probably. Not to mention some of the voice acting doesn't match up with all the tortage quests. A lot of the quests were probably thrown in the last couple months and there was no time to do voice for them.

I didn't mind. I realized htat tortage was a gift to the players. I enjoyed it and felt like I got to know the characters there and I really wanted to kill all those people cause they were dicks. lol, especially that delia bitch.

Yeah, once I hit 15, I really wanted to kill her, but I was to scared of her lvl 20 dog.

Well, yeah you're in the noob zone until lvl 20. Sorry but I have a hard time taking someone's opinion seriously when they haven't even left the noob zone yet. I mean c'mon man, for reals?

I was able to skip cut scenes. They keep it linear to teach new people how to play the first 20 lvls. After you leave Tortage the voice acting stops and things open up more. There are 80 lvls and I"m only lvl 30 I'd probably wait til I saw more of it to say for sure. I do see some bugs but other than that I'm liking it.

    Currently playing: Eve, DAOC, Warhammer
Games I've beaten: AC, AO, CoH, DAOC, D&D, EQ, EQ2, FFXI, FlyFF, GW, Horizons, L2, Ryzom, Shadowbane, SpaceCowboy, SWG, UO, WoW
Stay away from: Eudemons Online, DNL, and Roma Victor

I am sort of disappointed by Age of Conan as well...mainly because of my computer though. I have an AMD Athlon X2 6000+, 2gb of ddr2 ram, ge force 8600 512mb....and I can't even run the shit on medium graphics. But that is my problem I guess. I agree about the cut scenes, they are very annoying. The combat system gets very repetitive also...I dunno...

I am just waiting for Warhammer now...its like the "last hope" for me. I was miserably disappointed by Vanguard, and Age of Conan isn't all that great, better than Vanguard, but still not entertained by it.

I am not trying to persuade people to quit Age of Conan or anything, if you enjoy playing it and are having fun, good for you.

I guess people hype games just due to how good their graphics are.

MMO's which are 7 years old also have 7 years of patches and expansions. None have "far better systems" at launch.

I have to respectfully diagree here.  Im lvl 42 and I've seen nothing but linear pathways, invisible walls, etc.

True, the zones are a lot larger than the 1-20 zones but its the same thing.  And dont even get me started with the lack of character stats, UI, and lack of armor design. 42 lvls and seen 2 different style medium armor and 1 heavy armor.

And to the OP. You sound like you wasted $40 out of boredom and bought into all the trolling and flaming and gave the game about as much a chance as you would smelling a pile of shit and hoping it smells good.

Half of the background you see there is not explorable. Ive been to that zone.

Please behave. You don't have the same card as him/her so how do you know what his performance is. I happen to get about 5% of the frame rate with my card in AoC as in EQ2 or LOTRO with similar settings (making it unplayable). There are some serious bugs presently in AoC that occur only with specific video cards, which is why some folks are so happy and others not so.
