Low FPS on Med or Low Settings? Try High!

TweejTweej Member UncommonPosts: 115

Seriously... i was stuttering along at 8-12fps till i fired up my setting to high and took of shadows totally... looks so much better (obviously..) and chugs now at a better 22-26fps (very playable for me). Tried everything adjust@  low and couldnt really get it above 12 fps...

I got Pentium 4 3ghz, 2 old ddr 1gb sticks and a budget ATI Radeon 2600HD card so i am very happy that i can play this like this as all i wanted was at least 16-18fps on low settings to begin with....

That is extremely odd. I'll keep it in mind though. Thanks for the tip.

That is so illogical there is probably something to it.

I have a similar rig.  I'll give it a go.

  • jackduppjackdupp Member Posts: 68

Could be a driver problem with a certain effect, or a broken persistant shader effect in medium and low at a guess.

    Agree with the OP.

I run on high setting myself, sans shadows. I also turned the texture resolution to medium, and turned bloom ON.

Much better performance than the adjusted medium settings I was using before. Probably would run faster without bloom, but I love the way it looks.

What videocard? Perhaps this is related to the 'ati' problem?

I too can vouch an increase of about 10 fps when maxing everything out from the standard High Quality settings.

Odd, but it worked for me.

Or you could your computer into the garbage pail and get a new one.

hmmm, I'll have to try this...  may blow up my poor old rig, but sure it is worth a try :)

I think the OP is just saying that to see how many people do it and crash their system lol I doubt I'll even be able to get back to the settings menu after trying a "High" setting.

lol... was thinking the same when a friend told me to try it... you'll be surprised i think... Even loads quicker and the intro no longer stutters... be funny to think the amount of people who may have quit when they tried low and it didn't please.. when i logged on first time i set all setting at real low to see my chances... when they were sitting at 12fps i thought that was it for me... grin and bear it till i can scrape in some money...

i just used default to start and though somthing was worng but then i put all on high and got better fps then default about 40-30 but then i put it on default and put the views on max all that uped my fps to 60-40 and in 30 to high 20s and i could not hear my hard drive working as much as it was when it was just on all default setting i think its couse it loads up all in the field of view so that help to take a load off the hard drive no need to go and load and unload the cash any way game runs great for me now i love it fun times

Well, if you are just saying it for kicks, you got me too because I have to go home and try it now lol Like another poster said, even if it crashes my comp, it would be worth a shot!

EDIT: Now I wonder how many people will come back and say that it worked just to keep the joke going hehe

  • TweejTweej Member UncommonPosts: 115

    Dude... paranoid? lol...

I'm just stating what worked for me... cant guarentee it for you... i'm not into tricking folks on forums for my kicks... but seeing the people you get on here i understand your caution... good luck and hope it works...

    1. Choose high settings

    2. Remove shading completely.

    3. Check fps... try it outside city to see a bigger boost (if any)

It's not called paranoia when you just know the kind of people that post on MMORPG.com forums. It's called experience and wisdom lol Of which I'm ignoring atm because I want to see the game on high

I would if I could, but Funcom hasn't fixed my forum access yet  Do they suggest running the game on high settings too even with a min spec computer or are you talking about something else?

Honestly this isn't any surprise to me.

In a lot of modern games, turning off shadows completely can boost you from 10-18 FPS to 25-40 easily.

Before I got my new card I had to do this for recent games like Call of Duty 4.

When I need to choose one or the other, I prefer high detail textures and no shadows over Low-Med detail and shadows.

  • ZenNatureZenNature Member CommonPosts: 354

It's very weird, but it definitely works better on High... It's not all about the shadowing either, although I need that off to get any kind of decent fps from any detail level. The problem is I kept it disabled under a "Low" setting too and I still got worse fps then the High setting

  • Wharg0ulWharg0ul Member Posts: 4,183

I find that High settings, with shadows off,  texture res set to medium, water reflections from ground only, gives me nice, smooth playability. I also sacrifice a coupld of FPS for bloom, which I refuse to turn off.

It runs good enough on my old machine at the moment that I can take my time upgrading, and not have to run out and do it now. Plus, it looks fantastic!

I can confirm this. My fps increased by about 15 when I went from medium tweaked up to high tweaked down.

Its REALLY weird but it works.

careful what you tweak down though. Some things will reduce your fps if you turn them DOWN.....

Shadows can be turned off, ambient occlusion can be turned to low, texture resolution can be modified, water reflections....basically anything without a "slider".

Many of us are studying this odd behavior carefully, in order to help FC improve performance for all players.

Obviously, since turning distance sliders down decreases performance and results in more stutters, it wold seem that the way the game loads content and draws it as you get closer is flawed. If we can help isolate this issue, everyone will benefit from the fix.
