IMO Dont go back. They keep canceling games and are constantly pumping out expansion packs for the already Dead UO. UO Samurai Empire wtf >_<. Thats worst than Third dawn expansion.
All I know is UO was the only game that has ever won me over. I would never have stuck with any other game the way I did with UO. I even had some affairs with Diablo and Diablo II. But they only last for about a few months. Ultima Online was, in its prime, the greatest game I shall ever see. I don't believe there will be another game that will win me over the way UO has. It shall remain the one and only. Anyway, getting back on track, I have left UO a few years ago. I don't think it meets the criteria it used to. It is no longer an attractive game. It has expansions every other week and if you don't buy it, you're not on 'the list'. The development company isn't thinking their hardest, but they did make the game. I agree that this game has been through a lot and still is going through a lot, but the empire of Ultima Online is slowly fading from the true, old school fans. Ultima Online may not fade, but they sure as hell aren't an EverQuest or a Lineage II. This call is up to you but I, like many people before me, have gone back to UO to see the devastation that has been brought upon it. To my horrer, it was worse than I had expected. Ultima Online was a ruinous, pre-teen driven, corruptive hell hole full of inflation, worthless skills and worst of all- boredom. To me, there is nothing left in Ultima Online but fading memories. I suggest you don't go back. Leave it a fading memory. On the contrary, it is a good thing I left Ultima Online. I think it was a very, very good thing that I left. Yes, the gamer side of me says it was one of the saddest days of my life. But the one that actually has a life said it was the best. All of my siblings would torment me and always tell me to get off the computer because they wanted it. I thought that it was them who needed to shut up and leave me alone. On Ultima Online, I would be called names that were worse and these people had no basis for their accusations and arguments. For example, someone calls me 'Newb' for absolutely no reason. Yeah, you could just walk on trying to ignore that. But I was young. This hurt me, I would get pissed and fight back, with words of course. These fights would eventually get so frustrating that I would never want to see anyone again. Not only was the mental aspect of it agonizing, it was tormenting in the fact that I could have spent those three years that I did on the computer non stop, with books, or learning a foreign language, or just simply have fun with my life. I think that deep down, I felt like I used Ultima Online as a scapegoat. I think I used it to escape the realities of life; just as someone would use drugs or alcohol or anything like that to escape lifes troubles. I think that isn't healthy at all. It sure as hell doesn't help your future to have gaming as past experience. Who is going to hire you with a resume that says 'some gaming experience'? It also helped my social life when I quit. While I was playing, I would always blow off dates and appointments. This was so aggravating, when people got on your back about things like this. It was funny, when I sat on the computer for hours on end, I would lose all feeling in my legs, I became as white as printer paper and I began seeing the doctor more often. This was not good at all. I must say, I loved Ultima Online, but it ruined my life. It isn't too late to get back on track. Sure, you might say, why are you on the MMORPG.com forums if you don't even play? Well, it might be what keeps you in touch with the gaming world without being a part of it. It's obviously up to you, but I don't think you should go back to UO.
Personally I think UO is losing its value. When I first got UO I was what you would call a power gamer, I played for a long time for lots of time of the day. However then it losts its valuie of end game.

All the good things you guys are talking about, DO EXSIST!
You can find a shard that is FREE and it doesnt have the crappy AOS stuff.
I play Defiance. It rocks. PvP is back to being skill based and not Item based. If your interested in it, visist www.defianceuo.com. Also, there is a link to the top 100 shards there, if defiance doesnt seem right. OR go to www.uogateway.com and check out all the shards you want.
I share the same nostalgia for UO that you have. Trust me it's long gone. I started UO not too long after release and PK'ing and just not knowin if it was "safe" to run about gave an adrenalin rush. Those days are far behind UO.
The only game that even approaches that kind of rush is Anarchy Online (AO). The rest of them are just a pale imitation of what UO used to be.
Originally posted by triptogn Some of my best times gaming were in UO, and I've been twirling around the idea of getting the 7th anniversary addition and firing it up. I guess I need a bit of convincing, I havent played since the first expansion. Can anyone give me a synopsis of the newer features and why you are still playing after all these years? Please keep in mind, i've basically bought every big MMO that has come out over the years, so I'm kinda used to all the new features and 3d stuff that comes along with it. I guess I just need someone to push me over the edge to come back.
Well, Samurai Empire will come out soon, they offer a bigger land, more monsters, more artifacts to harvest, new cuztomizeable house tool, new skills and introducing the use of Honor Virtue. UO might makes us feel bored sometimes, that's why Origin keeps releasing new expansion in each year. To enhance and give more 'fun'. It is fun, even at the first weeks of Age of Shadows, the lag was like hell. But after a while, it is fun. You just gotta like the game first then you will love the game.
I'm waiting Samurai Empire as there is nothing much to do in UO except PvP, and finding new minor artifacts from paragon monsters in Ilshenar.
Actually I think that UO is and will still be the King of RPG. It still is the game with most of content. And with the new coming expansion UOSE more content will be added.
I think thta all new games are to boring and nor developed enoough. I got sick of all this new "readmill", camping, leveling and NO content games like Lineage2,Horizons, EQII and WoW.... they will need at least 2 years after release to have neough content to be exiting.
I have played UO on and off for several years, but only really have gotten into the game after AOS was released.
In my opinion UO is still amongst the best MMORPG - and this is comming from someone who really wasn't apart of the game before AOS. The game does have some issues and many of the skills, armour, weps, and so on have been changed enough from what I remember during the pre AOS days hence making some skills almost useless now. UO also has a huge trade side with vendors - a good thing.. but also a bad thing as this has caused prices of in game items sore to extremely high prices..
Still with all of these things that really have taken a toll on the game... it still is the only MMORPG that has alot of interaction from other players and more people on-line than any other game I have ever tried. This alone keeps me playing. I've joined one of the largest guilds on my shared and have some of the best times playing UO when I am going on hunts with them. I mean whats the point of paying a monthly subscription fee if your not going to interact with other players? So with all the changes... I've adapted, changed, and continue to play and still manage to have fun. And unlike other MMORPGs I've played.. UO does have a good "lived in" feel with NPCs almost every where you go, and or monsters to be found. Many games I've played have lacked these usually overlooked, but important aspects of the game.
Though even with all the "positive" parts of the game.. i hope it continues to improve.. I would love to see more random quests in the game, and or even a storyline implemented that could allow the Britannia World to have a dynamic feel and change to it where the players could interact and change the story line....though I doubt this would ever happen.. it still would be a nice touch.

I've left and come back so many times, every time I'm disapointed.
