Nice comments Raston, may i add:

If you dont like then cancel your sub, unistall and leave this area of the fourms, go and find a game that you enjoy, wait for the next big release and see if you like that or go back to WoW.

It is quite simple really.  Aoc is what it is, no more no less, get over it already.

The actual truth about AoC is between all these type of posts and what the fanboys say. The game is actually not that bad and most people tend to use horrible reasons as fuel for not liking it. "It does not feeeeeel right" is an example. Quest grinding has been in quite a few games, such as wow, and regular grinding has been even more evident so...yes it gets annoying but dreaming of something else means we have to wait several years to pray the mmorpg market changes.

I am not going to defend AoC  because it would be pointless. If you do not like it move on, and if you do go play it. I am actually enjoying AoC and I am 46. I will be trying WAR to see if I enjoy it more, and Aion when it comes out. But honestly, I see a loooong trend about whining and bitching about mmorpgs do I tend to ignore anyone who opens their mouth and does not give me a nice, long, detailed write up for why they like or do not like a game.  I would much rather make a base assumption on what I know about the game (official information) and then give the game a try myself. Because it is not like mmorpgs come out all the time.

I'm a casual player. I don't want to have to group most of the time to complete quests even to group to grind mobs. I left WoW because the end content forced long raids or PvP to get nice gear. I have RL responsibilities as a parent and cannot hit  the cap level in a week (likely get bored then and cancel the free subscription as adding content is a continual long process).

I've liked many MMOs but the the ones that retain me are the ones that allows a player more choices and a nice blend of PvE/PvP. I loved DaOC where I can solo and help others. Continual contents were added that actually added to the game. Many folks gripped about ToA but it added more to the game to explore and many quests it was just enough for me to find ways to complete it solo though it was meant for groups. It was just great problem solving. :) DF and RvR were great as it added enough elements of PvE and PvP. The game allowed you more than one choice as a player for the casual and hardcore gamers. I've been looking for that since. SWG was my next biggest star for similar reasons that allowed me choices. LOTR, Vanguard, and EQ2 I probably need to go back since I left early and heard they had improved alot. Tabula Rasa was great until around lvl30 where it started to feel very empty. That was my first experience into instanced zones and I actually loved it which just felt right for the game. I'm not so sure yet for AoC. If it keeps from spawn camping in only one zone then I can see merit. If for a quest, I can see instanced but not a whole zone for AoC. I'm only lvl 22 so I still need to give it more time to accurately rate it.

PvP:    DAoC (Actually helps the realm as a whole, class improvements with rank, and the nice addition of DF)

    Quests:    LOTR/AoC/WoW

Housing:    UO (Things you can do/experiment to show your personality)

Crafting:    DAoC and SWG (Items are actually pretty good as end items). Adding procs, gems, powerups (taken away)

End Content:    Too early to tell for AoC but liked DAoC where I can actually buy very nice gear instead of being forced to raid nightly. DAoC allows me a choice. Housing, exploring, RvR, crafting, siege, and defending). Bit of several things for the casual and hardcore.

It's about choices for me and not the feeling as I am forced down one path. DAoC was the closest (nothing's perfect), UO and SWG are next. I didn't play enough of LOTR, Vanguard, EQ2, AC, and Tabula of lates to say much other than I just didn't feel like playing them after lvl25. AoC feels the same way already once I left Tortage but maybe I'm just lost at the moment as I felt at the beginning levels. Just need to grow into it.

Just my opinion as a casual player and RL parent. I like quests and grinding. It's not Shadowbane. For that, I play COD4, ETQ4, Shadowrun, Halo2, MG, MoH, BF2/2142, TF2, UT, GoW, Resistance, Splinter Cell, GRAW, and Armored Core 4.

    QFT.

Sadly, that is the truth. Its not necessarily that AoC is a bad game, it's that many of us were playing MMOs before WoW and post WoW games are all targeting the causal segment. After Vanguard's initial failure, nobody wants to take a chance on a so called "niche" game that would appeal to the more old school MMOer's. I never really played WoW because I didn't like it from day one. I had high hopes for Vanguard and although it is improving, first impressions last and those first impressions have killed any chance of it being really successful.

SWG probably was the ultimate sandbox MMO but thanks in no small part to WoW(I'm not blaming WoW directly, but it was because of WoW that the monkeys at SOE/LA changed SWG into the nonsense it is today) and the ineptitude of LA and SOE, it was butchered and turned into the pathetic, crippled creature it is now. I have tried to go back several times but it is a shadow of it's former self. There was just something about getting into my Firespray, flying to Dath and hunting Rancor in the depths of the forest with my CH. You really had a sense of danger and excitement. I fear the days of that type of MMO are done. They have been replaced by the quick $$ mentality that pervades any commercial venture.

    Damn shame really :(

So if WAR doesn't satisfy your MMORPG needs and taste, what then?
You will again write I played this and that and so on and I hope next will be better.

Basically, yes. I said it was a matter of taste. I'm well aware that many people's first MMO experience was probably WoW and they fell in love with it. I, however, fell in love with EQ1 and the sandbox feel of MMOs. Where a quest meant something, took effort, and was not a means to an end.

I'm use to PvP happening in the world, not in a damn instance like a fucking carnival ride.

If WAR turns out to have the same crappy game play as WoW and AoC, then I'll wait again for the next MMO that looks promising and will continue so until I die or it becomes obvious that the golden age of MMOs is dead.

You agree it's matter of taste, yet you can't post without words like crappy gameplay ;).

You ever tried to join a developer team, or as advisor? So you could show us your vision of perfect MMORPG.

I'm not a developer. I wish I had the knowledge to be one. However, if there were ever such a position as advisor/idea man for an MMO team I would gladly fill that spot and I'd be able to make a game with actual meaning then the garbage we've been getting fed these past four years.

Blizzard and Funcom have great games at their foundations, but poorly executed.

It's a matter of taste, but it's also a matter of fact. Some people like very linear, stale, redundant game play. Why? Because it's casual player friendly. They play maybe 5hours a week and it never get boring.

Games like WoW and AoC lose their fun factor the first time around. You're also limited in end game. Don't think so because you've got lots of dungeons and rep to grind? Well...that in itself is limiting. There are only so many times you can play a dungeon over and over and over again.

There are only so many times you can raid the same damn dungeon, over and over and over again.

Rep grinding....that was put in there to give the illusion like the game has something else to offer and has depth when it is simply what it is...a tedious boring pointless rep grind for subpar miscellaneous bullshit.

WoW and AoC boast large worlds, but there is nothing to do in the game world. Instead they've created instanced dungeons with bosses and PvP.

Games like EQ, DAoC, and to some extent SWG(though the world for the most part was empty...you felt like a true explorer when running around it) had actual large game worlds WITH BOSSES, PVP, AND EVERYTHING ELSE IN THEM!

If a gaming company, small or big, came to me today and said "Retrad, we would love for you to be our advisor/idea man on our next MMO, but we won't pay you." I'd gladly do it for free just so by the time they were done I'd have a game that I would enjoy playing, a game that had depth, a game that was a true MMO and a game that would satisfy a great deal of the player base especially the old school players.

Tell me what's awesome. Is it useless guild cities? Is it extremely repetitive quests? Is it lack of a PVP system? Is it the zoning/instances created for xbox360? Is it the lack of content? Is it the amazing dx10 graphics? Is it the single player/guild wars style story line? Is it the customer support? Is it the class unbalances? Or how about this, is it the over simplified gameplay mechanics aimed to look cool for young teens*?

*this game is clearly aimed for the fun xbox360 crowd. If I wanted to see boobs, I'd click to my website.

Skamper you need to stop acting like an idiot and get it through your head that the game was just released to the general public and all mmorpgs (maybe mmos in general) have issues during their launch.  Are you new to this genre?

Just released doesn't give Funcom an excuse for having a lack of content with PvE and PvP.

I love it when people/game companies claim what "WILL" be implemented in the future.

If your game isn't ready, don't release it.

there is a vague line between - not enough content cause the mmo is just released.. or - not enough content cause there simple isnt hardly any

if every mmo would be ready at launch there wouldnt be a need to update and use monthly fees

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

finally i also agree with the posters here that those that highly praise aoc have not played any of the pre WoW mmos (and can probably not understand the fun you could have in the dungeon groups in these games, today in the instances its more like a sightseeing tour), and most of them probably are still in the more poslished part of the game mostly 1-30. 30-40  shows a allready the first rough edges apearing under the slowly disapearing polish.

I would like to point out that you are wrong on this point and I don't really believe that I'm just an exception to the rule. UO happened a decade ago, when I had four times the amount of free time and far less things to do with it. The old recipes don't work because the old crowd has changed and can't keep up with them.

So basically because you got older, I was 14 at the time when I started EQ and now 22, and don't have as much time, you want a more simple easy mode game to play?

    That doesn't make sense.

Right now I have less time then I did when I was 14, but obviously more than someone who has a career and family. Still when that day comes I would still want to play a game similar to UO or EQ1 then a carebear, casual player paradise such as WoW/AoC.

Why? Because when I do spend time playing it I'll be achieving something. Every mile stone in the old MMOs meant something whether it was dinging a new lvl, getting a new item off a named boss you camped forever, or doing a raid on a friday night and having to KILL another guild for the rights of the boss.

If you want something to play that you can progress through with minimal time put in and be the best at, I suggest you stick to console RPGs.

AoC is pure quest grinder! Nothing more.
There is no content besides quests and pretty graphics.
This is not a PvP or a PvE game. It's a quest grinding game.
In PvP games you have some sort of PvP system or PvP objectives besides ganking.
In PvE games you have dungeons that are somewhat important.

People who praise AoC on these boards have low level chars.
They like to label others who critique this game as trolls.
I guarantee. Most of them will be gone after lvl 40-50.
If you ask them what is so awesome about it, you will not get any good answer besides graphics.

I've been waiting for a year to play any decent MMO. And right now I don't even want to log in to play AoC.
Because I know all I'll be doing is grinding quests.

Hrrm, where to start with this idiocy.

You must be a WoW fanboi fresy off of the WoW forums leaving a trail of tears behind you.

Who in the hell said anything about pvp objectives needing to be there?  This is what destroyed WoW's PvP.  Cause towers out in the middle of Hellfire were really fun objectives right?

There doesn't need to be objectives at all.  The pvp is there for what it is pvp.  You want to kill someone you do it.  You want some kind of crap version PvP converted to PvE.  Go play Alterac Valley.

I would rather play a quest grinder then a simple grinder.......Which do you think would be worse?  In any case grinding is a part of every MMO deal with it or move on to an FPS or something.

What other content are you looking for?  Did you hit level 80 and see what's there?  Show us proof..

You rest his case. He asked what's so good about this game and you came up with nothing.

He didn't rest anyone's case, he just proved himself to be immature.

There are good points to this game, it just depends if it fits in your style or not. Bigplanet obviously prefers sandbox MMOs and doesn't want to grind quests, he would rather grind mobs, that's fine. I personally feel the quest system in this game is well done and I haven't felt too much tedium so far. Bigplanet says there is nothing but pretty graphics and quests, but there are also guild cities, guild keeps, PvP minigames, crafting and sieges. Again, probably not his cup of tea, but it is indeed there. He says it's not PvE because the dungeons aren't important, I don't get this, the one's I've ran had a backstory. PvP has objectives besides ganking, there are even PvP levels to be earned with feat points to go along with it.

As far as what is good about the game, it's a solid MMO, I enjoy the combat system, the quests don't feel overly grindy, the graphics are breathtaking, I love the animations, the quests actually seem to have a purpose and a reason for everything you do. As opposed to Nessingwary of WoW (just an example, not WoW bashing).  I haven't started crafting yet, so I won't comment on that.

Combat seems balanced and fights are often exciting, something I haven't felt in a long time in an MMO.

As I've been getting at all along, is AoC revolutionary? Not really. Is it a solid MMO? I think so. Does it need polish? Hell yes.

Give it time, things will get better, although I'm loving it now.

If you don't like a game in general that doesn't make it a bad game, that just means it's not your style. If you don't like the game because you've run into some sort of computer crashing, unfixable bug or it's just not playable, then it's bad game.

For those of you reading this who are debating on trying the game, don't use forums as a basis for opinion. Either try it and decide for yourself, or try to have a Q&A session with someone who plays.
