Yes because pressing 1,2,3 over and over again is so groundbreaking lol
More groundbreaking than the auto attack that is WoW and other MMO's, at least you can dodge, and when running away you don't have mobs punching you from 20 feet away or spells and arrows acting like homing missles on you.
Fighting and other games on the Xbox and other Consoles isn't that ground breaking either, press X, A, Y or B...if you really think about it. The whole idea about combat in a good MMO is control and even though you don't have total control in AoC its a step in the right direction and its more than other developers have done. Now as more games come out they'll try and build upon what is AoC's way of combat and make it better. After this next wave of click autoattack mmo's come out we probably (hopefully) won't see anymore.
Well it's different.. but not more gourndbreaking .. I must say, combat in AoC is really great.. it really is ..for a while.. but my hox is closing to lvl 30 and.. well .. I can't say I am enjoying it so much now.. It's goot touch indeed.. but I really feel that combat in WAR have more to offer (i am sure AoC fanbois wont understand it.. but I can't say what exactly in WAR combat is better for me.. NDA daddy looking upon me :P )
I'm not saying at all WAR is just a WoW clone, just that WAR has WoW in its crosshair. Only comparison is WAR is taking some pointers as far as appealing to the mass gaming community. I think WoW is a great game, I'm excitied about WAR, and AoC is in a great direction. I can see the differences clearly. Just because the dev's in there little videos remind us its not another WoW clone(which is what there fan base wants to hear) doesn't mean there wont be alot of similarities. In the end I think WAR Devs have good enough talent to twist the similarities and really make a unique appearing game from WoW.
I agree, the comparison stuff isn't such a bad thing in my opinion until it becomes an X game is better than Y game arguement based solely off of opinions. I still do not understand why some people want to see any MMOG fail nowadays. The selection has been rather stagnant and it is refreshing to see some new stuff coming out. Btw I think your sig is pretty spiffy!
Cheers!
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
I know AoC is suppose to be immersive in combat, but I am hoping for something a little different in WAR. Not sure of specifics there, but if it has anything like DAoC did in the reactionaries and combos, I found that plenty immersive for me. Especially before you could backup styles if they didn't work. Had to be fast to pull off that combo after an evade, hehe.
I rather have an autoattack and then use skill to get off other abilities like positionals and reactionaries that what AoC has. Sure, you shouldn't do 123 every time, but the immersive aspect for me just isn't as much as I've had elsewhere, oh well. Not everyone's cup of tea I guess.

Well since I haven't played WAR I'm not sure which is why I haven't said anything bad about the game. Until I play the game or at least seet he game play I won't pass judgement. I hope its a good game.
I'm with moped on this one, the better each game is the better the next one will have to be, and the fact that if you get burnt out on MMO there is another amazing one to play.
Only problem with that is i don't have want be in the dilemma of not knowing which MMO to play because they both rock
I am just wondering if anyone else out there like me who has been waiting for AoC as well as WAR and now wonder if Warhammer is going to be enough for them? I am only playing AoC as it came out first but WAR has always been THE game I have wanted to play. However after the combat in Conan I don't think I can go back to cartoonish graghics waving oversized swords that just wack away until one character falls over. AoC is not for everyone, personally I feel it has dramatically improved the genre but not revolutionised. However the combat is something special. I have never played any MMO that captures the reality like this game does. Everything from active blocking, timing, dodging, setting up fatalities and witness the realistic gore that follows, hell even my armour looks like it has been soaked in realistic blood. This thread isn't about screaming how 'amazing' AoC is and how WAR is crap. I am a fan of both but I am interested to know if anyone feels the same. (messed up the poll )
I'm not bashing War and have played a friends beta account so I'm not saying this blind. I agree with you, I think War will appeal to certain gamers that AoC will not. If you enjoy AoC it would be hard to go back to a 'hit key' to attack style. War is also a pvp driven game and non pvpers will probably get bored fast as they will with AoC if they play on a pve style server.
I won't be buying/playing War but I can't wait for when the game to be released. There will be alot of whining around here.....again!

The combat system is based off a console. They based is off Xbox 360 version of the game. You button smash to attack and using a melee skill you push right combination of button to excute that special attack within the time alllowed. You have click 123 the whole time during a fight while timing you skills and using the right combination of 123 to execute skills which gets tiring. Casting spells is basically the same in every other MMO.
Games with auto attack allow you combo skills. Some skills are used after your PC blocks or parrys. You may can auto attack and walk off on some mobs but hard mobs require more attention than that. In PVP the auto attack and walk off doesn't work well at all. So Game like WAR which is PVP based you won't see people using auto attack and walking off in RVR at least cause they have to pay attention.
Good thing I prefer casters in MMOs mostly. Combat hardly ever changes in each MMO I play as a caster besides the spells i use. Whatever using you skills and abilities wisely is what matters.

By what? Adding pre-planned buffs on the character before a fight? LOL! The actual "engagement " of the fighting is still going to be boring auto-attack! It will in NO way have more to offer..
Chryses, I have enjoyed your posts. Are you a person who actually played War pre pc? I can assure you wou will not be dissapointed. Flame on me.
Hey Sun,
That is the whole problem. I played Warhammer for the past 18 years and have ....1000-1500 units (mighty dark elves) plus played all the spin off games and the Pc games. Even joined a Warhammer guild that my best mate setup. So this aint a flame on WAR at all. Its a genuine concern I have as a massive fan of WAR that once I am in I will be missing the more realistic style of AoC. However its positive to see posts here and elsewhere implying that the combat isn't so auto attackish.
I thought combat in Vanguard was fun and great to watch and looking back its quite childish compared to AoC. However I will play WAR still to hang with my friends and hopefully it will be more open world. I play AoC on high spec and if it wasn't for the graghics and combat (melee) I wouldn't accept the loading screens.
Maybe in 3-5 years we will have an AoC like game with a massive open world. Being cheeky here but if anyone is in WAR beta can you give hints as to 'killing blows' or 'combat graghics'?

i still plan to check WAR out, whether it's just to play it and move on or play it in addition to AoC, or maybe even play it instead of AoC--i cannot say. all i can say is that extreme graphics, revolutionary combat and unique gameplay & mechanics aren't necessarily important--the only important thing to a game is that it is fun & enjoyable. now for some people extreme graphics make a game more enjoyable, same with combat, etc--other people have different measures of what makes a game fun to them.
currently i'm having a ton of fun in AoC, and WAR looks like it's going to be a lot of fun also, i'm betting they're both going to do very well.
While MMOs are judged by the whole list of offered features and not just their specific elements, I would expect the MMOs under development to take note of what is improving or changing on the market.
One thing is certain, AoC proved that alternative to auto-attack systems can work. The system still is a love or hate but at least we moved one step towards more variety.
OP, if the other elements that make WAR exciting are there, I'm sure you'll put up with a standard auto-attack system.

i played AoC in technical beta and CB and I can say i wasn't as thrilled as many of you guys are. Its not a bad thing but i just didn't think it was the end all of combat mechanics in MMOs. I find it pretty sad if this will be the only thing that keeps you from trying other MMOs that or you just trying to create more hype for AoC.
p.s. for everyone that compares every MMO coming out nowaday to WoW....is WoW the first MMO you guys ever played? WoW has used ideas from other MMOs and gave it their own little twist. Some of these things worked and some imo didn't. I have nothing against the game since it has made the MMO industry work that much harder to get a slice of blizzards pie.
I thought AoC was supposed to be a WoW-alternative, not a WoW-lite. Sure, most people play casually, however, I thought the entire premise behind AoC was PvP-oriented.
Most people reference WoW as a comparison because today's MMO gamers are usually guaranteed to have experienced at least that MMO. It has more to do with market penetration and general public knowledge of its in-game mechanics.
I find nothing revolutionary in AoC's combat. Instead of auto-attack i push 1, 2 or 3, and instead of doing my skills immediately i have to push 1,2 or 3 again. The Basics are still the same and the difference is small i barely notice it.
What i do like in AoC's combat though is the whole collision detection, it offers a chance to stragically place the mobs in order to get the best effect out of your hacks, or aoe skills. If war or any other game for the matter offers colision detection like AoC's i d have no problem with it

I am really enjoying combat in WAR..and you are exactly AoC fanboi who will hardly understand it. But let me try to describe my feeling.
AoC combat is combat like from action game. And I am sure that most players who love AoC combat love action game-play..and that's ok.. Many people really enjoy combos, dodging.. just be faster than your opponent...And this exactly what AoC offer.. Look.. I love playing action game that's why I really enjoyed AoC combat..
but what I love more are strategic games.. I understand that WAR combat system look very similar to WoW..and of course.. It is.. But they added so much depth to the combat and WAR combat is not like playing action game but more like strategic game. I really enjoy planing (aka tactics), I really enjoy hard decisinou what use and why (aka Morale) and I really love when I can outskill my opponent not just by speed, skilled fingers and great reactions.. but just outsmart them. I love when you need balance your offense and deffense, when you are trying find out the best ratio between offensive "points" and heal "points" (I think every beta-tester knows which class I played in previous phase :P ) I think it's hard understand how combat in WAR deep really is when you didn't beat 3 opponents at a same time in 2 min long combat.
So..in one side have action oriented combat system, which looks and play great and it can be fun for a while (same like UT for example.. Someone will love UT years and years, and someone will be bored after few matches), and on the other side there is more strategic oriented combat. Both are different, both can be cool, but it can't be said which is better. But I like strategic games more.. thats why WAR combat have more to offer for me.
I find nothing revolutionary in AoC's combat. Instead of auto-attack i push 1, 2 or 3, and instead of doing my skills immediately i have to push 1,2 or 3 again. The Basics are still the same and the difference is small i barely notice it.

Hmmm lets see, timing goes without saying, i use it in every game, fatalities find me totally indifferent, if i get one its ok, if not i can just rest a little, dodging i find too much of a fuss, maybe i just fail miserably at it cause i cant push all those buttons at the same time, or i m just not used to it. And active blocking, never tried that :P does it compare to M&B's?

Some of these things worked and some imo didn't. I have nothing against the game since it has made the MMO industry work that much harder to get a slice of blizzards pie.
I thought AoC was supposed to be a WoW-alternative, not a WoW-lite. Sure, most people play casually, however, I thought the entire premise behind AoC was PvP-oriented.
To synn:
Most people reference WoW as a comparison because today's MMO gamers are usually guaranteed to have experienced at least that MMO. It has more to do with market penetration and general public knowledge of its in-game mechanics.
I love AOC combos and combat in general. Its not something we havent seen before, but surely is fun for me so far.
Played: Quite a few Mmos
Playing: Something
I find nothing revolutionary in AoC's combat. Instead of auto-attack i push 1, 2 or 3, and instead of doing my skills immediately i have to push 1,2 or 3 again. The Basics are still the same and the difference is small i barely notice it.
What i do like in AoC's combat though is the whole collision detection, it offers a chance to stragically place the mobs in order to get the best effect out of your hacks, or aoe skills. If war or any other game for the matter offers colision detection like AoC's i d have no problem with it
so does active blocking, timing, dodging, setting up fatalities etc doesnt make a difference or u just dont use it? just curious...
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
By what? Adding pre-planned buffs on the character before a fight? LOL! The actual "engagement " of the fighting is still going to be boring auto-attack! It will in NO way have more to offer..
I am really enjoying combat in WAR..and you are exactly AoC fanboi who will hardly understand it. But let me try to describe my feeling.AoC combat is combat like from action game.
But I like strategic games more.. thats why WAR combat have more to offer for me.
so does active blocking, timing, dodging, setting up fatalities etc doesnt make a difference or u just dont use it? just curious...
