I played DAoC for about a month each for old graphics and new. I just couldn't stomach them. Maybe I am too critical but ouch the graphics actually hurt.
Also, the fact that I could climb a several story building, jump off and receive no damage just totally limited the whole "suspend disbelief" ideology for me.

Fej

I have suicided many times jumping of towers in daoc and taking damage from hopping down the stairs leading down to darkness falls. You have to suspend ALL belief in all mmorpgs....whether it's pulling out a large speederbike from nowhere or being unable to walk up a path to house because you didn't go to the ramp in SWG.
I have never seen anything wrong with the graphics in Daoc. I prefer them to anything i have seen in SWG (at least if someone opens a door in Daoc you see them open unlike SWG's people vanishing and door remains shut)

I am definately not an SWG fan at the moment. You can't even jump off most buildings there let only attempt suicide.
I agree that with any Sci-Fi/Fantasy book, movie or game one must suspend disbelief.
I guess liking or disliking graphics is a lot like art. One person's eyesore is anothers pleasure. But I disagree with your example of doors opening and closing in DAoC saying much about its graphics. That is a matter of graphics functionality not the graphics/art.
I should be more specific. The graphics in DAoC appear "flat" to me, when compared to other 3D MMORPGs and lack a certain depth for a 3D game. I don't know what it is, it just looks that way to me.
Personally I think the graphics/art, all-around, are the best in AO. Despite the fact that it is getting a little antiquated and could use a facelift with a new graphics engine.
Thanks btw for the civil and constructive reply.
Fej
Well DAoC is 3 years old to be honest.
So yes its graphics are getting out of date. But so is AO!
People play a mmorpg for the content and gameplay. If it was all about graphics games like UO and shadowbane would be dead in the water long ago.
I agree. But I certainly didn't mean to imply it was all about graphics and I did mention that AO could use a facelift. As a younger game than AO I don't think that DAoC holds a candle to AO in the graphics department personally, even after the DAoC facelift.
Kindly,
Fej
DAoC seems to have this strange and definate dichotomy. People either love it or hate it. There seems (at least to me) not much of a middle ground.
I will have to look at the new expansions. I imagine the screen shots are on the DAoC website?
At least I am not completely in the minority as far as DAoC graphics go.
Cheers,
Thrin
I aggree with Side, Daoc is easily the best mmorpg. It has depth, whether it's from realm versus realm or epic quests and quite a good (in my opinion) graphics engine.
Character models are still a lot better than the triangular and squared look of AO characters.
It seems Daoc is going through a bit of a resurgence lately...if only they knew what awaits them when they hit 50 and have hopes of playing high end rvr....and find everyone has a bot, TOA loot and a squillion realm point allotted skills they don't have

Thankfully i played this game before the madness started.Bots just started getting in vogue before i left. Before this you would have guilds actually kick folks out because of the use of bots(not sportman like).
Realm points i just saw it been introduced before i quit(i met it when i did a comeback and the real useful ones i got quite quickly).
ToA loot.Met this on my last comeback and to be honest its the greatest mistake mythic ever made. This one kind of ensured i made my last ever comeback.
It was cracks me up how most of you always say the same thing.
The post was about graphics and falling damage, not yada yada bots ruined the game, yada yada /leveled charaters whatever.
I swear most of you just cut and paste the same responce into every DAoC thread.
DAoC is 3 years old, so what a shock the graphics ar a little dated. However if graphics are what it is you want in a game, you'll never play anything for long, and certainly never long enough to get the high end game. Games are about gameplay.
You take damage from falling can even die from it, unless you fall in water. It cracks me up you want realism in a game where you can cast fire bolts from your hands, kill dragons, respawn after dieing, no ever ages, eats or has parents. Oh ya, MMORPG's are "real".

It's been disappointing for me beginning with the graphics of City Of Heroes, then seeing the graphics of older games. Not a fair comparison obviously.
Will the new games have graphics comparable to CoH (Speaking of WoW EQ II, etc.)?
A game is so much more than its graphics, but someone said else said it best, if graphics weren't important - why not just play text-based.
Most games have failed in getting realism into every bit of grahics u c (In swg for instance as u board a transporter u walk through the ramp it kind of disappers.).So just because its 3d doesnt mean the game developers have made best use of it.
As for graphics in general its all to ppls taste some ppl might prefer text based, others 2d or 3d.
Ive played alot of games inc doac and swg but have stuck to playing mir2 and now mir3 which is a 2d game which i prefer over 3d , not to say i wont be trying wow since more to game than just graphics.
Unless graphics are really important to u i wouldnt dismiss games using other graphics engines u may well be suprised by them and u might end missing the real reason for playing mmorpg - the game play and the community.
When released Dark Age of Camelot used a graphical engine called NetImmerse, developed by Numerical Design Limited (NDL). Version used at launch was 3.0.
When Shrouded Isles, the first expansion for DAoC, was released in December 2002 a major upgrade of the NetImmerse engine was included.
http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/expansions/si/engineupgrade.php
For Trails of Atlantis focus laid on improving ground texturing and offcourse upgrading the NetImmerse, or Gamebryo as it is now called, engine a bit. Also the use of Speed Tree was introduced. This was in Q4 2003.

The next expansion for DAoC will be Catacombs, with a planned releasedate 2004. Focus here seems to be to give the models some love
Btw...NetImmerse is also used by Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind.
As many posters have said, graphics isn't everything, far from it. What really have impressed me with DAoC though is the brilliant artwork, I just love the feel and flow.

Honestly, it wasn't cut and paste...really.
Do you think it's possible that because you see the same complaints over and over there might be a shread of "truth" to it?
It didn't know they fixed the falling damage deal. That's was mentioned above.
"Games are about gameplay."
Sure, but not everyone likes checkers. Everyone has different expectations. There's nothing wrong with that.

I believe that people that complain about graphics in DAoC havent had SI installed. Although the graphics is not brilliant it certainly has its moments...
Cred to Mythic for making necessary upgrades to the graphics engine when they release new expansions.
About falling damage; Its always been there as far as I can remember. Some classes (rogue-like) get an ability of safe falling to make them go into a keep and escape without having the fall killing them, perhaps this is what you are thinking about. Further more; iirc falling damage doesnt kill you if you have full health...but instead you might just end up with a % of hitpoints. (Thinking about it this might have been subject of change...so that players can be killed instantly. I remember having to jump twice of a high wall to suicide)
What did you expect ?
As for me I would rather have a game with lots of content than a game with effects looking like CoH. I can truely understand how people still stick with UO and EQ.
Its just like in RL. To make something interesting and rewarding in the long run it need to please more than just the eye.

Just some info for ya,
They are not the only ones using NetImmerse (GameBryo) here are the full list (screenshots) of all the games that used the NetImmerse Engines

Oh, nice one Tyrgris. Morrowind was one I remember from the back of my head. Seems like Morrowind + DAoC has made ndl popular to use...

I started playing DAoC on the basic 5 day trial offer and immediately though "Man, these graphics are minging!" but I persevered until level 5 and I started to enjoy the game more. I realised that, although the graphics were nowhere near as good as CoH (which I'd been playing previously) the gameplay had far more potential so I kept playing it.
My friend done the same, played it for one night, probably a couple of hours at least and didn't play it again because he thought the graphics are soo bad.
I then bought the Platinum Pack from www.dvdboxoffice.com and holy cow I noticed a very big difference in the graphics. The most impressive thing about the expansions was the water effect. It was an amazing difference.
My friend was up at mine the day I installed the expansion pack and he was also amazed by how improved the graphics were.
He still didn't play DAoC though, By this point he was now playing Eve and loving it. And to be quite honest, who can blame him, Eve is a craking game aswell.
Cheers

The graphics is not the best in the world.. But I can still get lost in the
game and forget all about time. And that is what I think is important in
mmorpg games.
GO GO GO good gameplay.
I found the graphics in DAoC 3 years ago to be just fine, and I find them to still be just fine. Hardly a reason to complain about, especially when they are being upgraded through expansions. Gameplay is king.

To be honest I like the trees in TOA more than any other game so far. I feel sorry for people playing with the old client - the game looks so much better with the new stuff.

Regarding the topic of graphics in a mmorpg, to me it is very important that the graphics be realistic, or at least believable. I don't like anime, or cartoonish graphics like WoW seems to use. I played FFXI and the gameplay kept me in it for a few months. I never liked the look of the characters but it wasn't something that I would quit over.
I like a mmorpg to be realistic for the setting it is in. Star Wars Galaxies graphics do a great job of capturing the feel of the Star Wars Saga. At the time, Everquest really was great, with graphics that kept me immersed. Of course, more importat to a game is the gameplay and if it's no good, well, the greatest graphics wouldn't save it from failing in my opinion. Lineage II looked great but I just can't get myself to play it for very long without getting angry, bored, or just disgusted.
I try to play DAoC. I love it, but to be honest, after playing SWG, City of Heroes, and other newers games with very nice graphics, I cannot get into DAoC like I used to, and I think it is because of the dated graphics. I guess I am just a little shallow that way . . . I am waiting for Catacombs
