Youre comparing devs to god? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? =.= Seriously, you think it could be done with a balance? Even if it could, it would take years n years n years of testing, n by the time watever game these ppl were funded for came out... It would be obsolete. Even if ppl were still interested in the game (doubt it), it would be extremely STRESSFUL. Now, most games with pretty dumb mobs are even stressful, becuz even DUMB mobs can kick your ass. Now you have a game with horrible gfx (cuz it was started SOOO many years ago), its extremely hard to do ANYTHING (cuz mobs are smarter than you), n it LAGS LIKE HELL. Why do you play? I, for one, prefer storyline, up to date gfx, no lag, and content. I really couldnt give half a flying **** if mobs have lives.

God, Gods, Goddess.
Humans have been know as a God in history many times. Even groups of people were known as Gods. Planet were known as Gods and I do believe they are made up of gasses and other goodie bits. I've seen enough "God" in this post and "Devil" a few times to really push my buttons (Honestly = me).
Why is it that nearly every thread I read normally has the mention of God.
Now let me just say my part.
LOGIC and GOD don't mix very well IMO. So don't combine the two! But now back to being on topic, I believe that a complete open world would open up the possibilities for a future. A virtual free world with abilities to grow crops and animals that breeds can result in a person working from home who has absolutely very little education. I'm not ashamed in admitting that I come from a very poor background and my life has been very hard that I never had the chance to ever get a school education, but I am thankful for that in a way. It opened my mind in a different way then most.
There's always been stupid scientists or whatever trying to prove that killing people in games can create murderers, and to a point it's possible. Nothing would please me more then going into someones home in a RPG and slaying all their family and children and knowing that I am safe in an alternate reality. Ofcourse, for doing that I would get hunted down but at least if I do get raped I still have my other reality to start the process again. This does not make me sick, it makes me someone who would role-player a murderer. Killing another human is considered wrong or bad in this reality and that is what stops people from doing it.
If all rules were taken away in and instant you find yourself in a survival style and you have to kill in order to survive. If you refuse to kill you then accept that you quit. Why am I saying all this? Because
A) We cannot do the above without RULES. There's rules that are placed on these type of things and the results can be dangerous.
This is why a person would choose to compete this way in a MMORPG. The point being is that if you enjoy killing a person in a game and you enjoy taking way their items and time spent, you endorse murder. Let me explain a bit more. In Diablo II there is Hardcore and you get 1 life. People like to PK and some PKs (Including myself) like to kill higher levels because I enjoy the taking away life from the other person. When you kill someone, all the energy used to do it on your side compared to the energy used on their side to get that far from start is a bit difference. You zap more energy and life from them and you obviously win. It's not a game of killing outright but you do affect their real life.
C) Killing a person in a game and making it permenant is fun. There can be rules ingame just like real life, but as with real life killing is possible at ANY moment. There are no reinforced rules to prevent this from happening, just warnings.
D) And to just get my honest point across. We all play MMORPGs to get away from real life I believe. My real life is just an existance and MMORPGs are where my success appears. Don't even bother telling me to get a life because I will just comeback with explain what actually is LIFE. That little line doesn't work on me I'm afraid. But once again, it's humans competing. When you tell someone to get a life you expect a reaction (There's no point in trying to deny this or the line becomes invalid).
E) Because I have more fun playing MMORPGs then being active in my life more I prefer to be up there in competing with other people. My AIM is to ZAP their LIFe from their bodies.
I don't lie about this and say "It's just a game" because we don't kill people on hardcore just because it's a game. We do it to win and power over the other person.
For the last time, an unlimited open MMORPG is a safer world then what we live in at the moment and death may be permenant but the chances are not. If you could have unlimited chances to try at life again I'm sure you'd agree that you wouldn't give a damn what you did in life. You'd try all sorts of things, including killing people to show your dominance. Humans will always have compete against each other, if there are rules or not. It goes on today in many forms.
I like to compete for power and prefer to do it in a world where chances are many for the other person. It's a much more legal and safe way for murder.
And I wouldn't bother replying, just reading. The post was not constructed to be replied to because it's very hard for a person to understand what they are not willing to try to understand. I will not reply to this thread anymore. If a person is scared to be honest in their one chance life then what's the point in living it. Oh wait, I got it. TO TRICK the other person. Humans evolution path was not designed to live together in peace. We are a species of destruction and when we talk about a species from coming from another planet, that is based on war to zap our resources, THAT IS US. Let's all start a FFA hahahahahahaha.

Man, what's with all the personal attacks these days? It doesn't sound rediculous to me. Not at all. I'll tell you why. Because the game developers are God in the game that they made. Who else is ruling that microworld?
And as far as balance goes, even the real God, you know the one you pray to when you want that girl who sits beside you in class, hasn't even set this world up with balance. Everyone knows (well close to everyone I guess) that life isn't some zero sum game.
And yes game developers are always trying to balance, that's part of the reason I pay my $12.00 a month.
Oh, and by the way, the graphics are usually done towards the end of game development. They do the coding first so that the graphics won't be outdated when the game comes out. Coding is never obsolete, unless you write a game in PASCAL or BASIC.

Its because they missed their anger management classes.
And yes, this world is set up with balance. If it wasn't, we'd all be dead. Even einstein said, "God doesn't play dice with the universe."
As for graphics, well, I'm not so sure about that. I've seen of quite a few situations where they switch their graphics engine once or twice in development before they bring out the game.

I love static dungeon mobs, especially in EQ and DAoC. When the mobs get boring, we go deeper to harder mobs. The use of strategy and techniques increase the strenght of the group that gives the group the power to hunt harder mobs. Mobs may not be smart, but u can always find stronger mobs that requires more intelligence and group cooperation to defeat.
I dont want to hunt easier mobs just because we need to factor in the unexpecteds. For example, your group is hunting mobs that requires everyone's full attention to defeat, suddenly, a mob (because they are smart) escape and call more friends and easily wipe your group. To deal with this unexpected, your group will hunt lower level mobs, so when a mob call lots of his friends, your group is able to survive.
I dont like roaming. So much effort is being made in following and maintaining the group stay together, that strategy time is wasted.

Hmmmm... not to be difficult, but we're not really in a balance. This planet is not static at all. Look at global warming. And if everything in the universe is in balance then what happened to Mars long ago. I got this from a Billy Nye site, so you know it's fact...
" Our planets are a lot alike. But something happened on Mars to make the water disappear and make it a cold place with a very thin atmosphere. So, we're sending robot instruments and rovers to Mars to study the environment and look for signs of life. There's a lot to do. Come on!"
So even though we may not be dead YET, the end may be near. Like I said, life's not fair, this is no zero sum game. I just hope God nerfs those sunspots soon.

Well, Global warming, my thoughts are, I'll believe it when it happends. Until then I'll take it as just some eco fanatics propaganda.
As for mars being destroyed, I'm not quite sure where your going with that.

Don't monsters have motivations? Don't they get hungry and go searching for food? Do they sleep? Do they mate and make little monsters? Boy, imagine the aggression enhancer the mum would have carrying her brood if you went after her.
Check out and play Star Wars Galaxies. You will see monsters hunting each other for food. Predators attacking, fighting, and killing, prey. Herbavores will grazz while moving around.
I just don't understand why mobs insist on standing in one place waiting for the inevitable group to come by.
I want my mobs to get a life !!!!
In games with zones, monsters have no choice but to stand in one place. But even in some zones in EQ (like the Karanas) MOBs will roam and wander. In SWG NPCs, and monsters will definatly roam and wander. Almost none of them stand still for long.
Hunt, fish, climb a tree for friggin honey. I dunno. Do something besides just stand on the side of the road.
SWG right now has the most advanced AI behavior. Monsters will hunt (hunt each other just like in the Nature TV shows.). Humanoid NPCs will have blaster fights vs each other.
How about if a group of people are attacking the mobs food stock the mob decides it's time to raise hell on the village? How about mobs do like birds and have certain things they do during the day; birds feed in the morning, gather gravel to digest it in the afternoon. It just adds more realism and strategy for the hunt.
SWG has something close to what you suggest. If players attack the borrow, or lairs of any monster, they will come back from roaming to defend it. And even repair it. Humanoid NPCs will also defend their mini-forts and buildings if players attack them.
Also if you have all underbush settings turned up, when you walk through shrubs, and undergrowth, you will see birds fly up as you disturb them.
I agree it would make games even more intresting if they added all of your suggestions.
Did anyone else notice that as soon as someone made a valid point disproving all of Finwe's points, he immediately dropped the subject of PvP and accused them of name calling?
Finwe, did we never leave the second grade? "Mrs. So-and-so! He is calling me names again!"
Stop.
Grow up and argue. If you truly believe your statement, then defend it. Don't result to changing the subject. No one likes a quitter.

Either that or he could just admit that he is defeated

Oh what, you actually think that somone that lacks the civility to argue without namecalling, debating with them is actually of any use?
I have absolutely no problem with debating with somone. But I do have a problem with getting in a endless flamewar with somone that can't keep it civilized. You want to "debate" like that. Go right ahead. But don't expect everyone to feed a troll. I've been in plenty of heated arguments, and personally I'm rather tired of them.

To be fair, yes I did call you names. However you are the one displaying the lack of maturity here, indicateing that perhaps my namecalling was approprite. Furthermore, this has not been proven.
I am a mature intelligent scientist. I fully admit when I am wrong, as I did in that thread about the Black&White screenshot showing all the skeletons. I argued that they were all in the same position, and someone pointed out things I had not noticed, and I admited that I was in error.
If you can provide a good argument supporting your position without makeing unlikely claims not backed up by proper studies, I will admit that I was wrong.
You have not done so, and I do not think you can.
You have resorted to name-calling and charecter-assasination, backed up by "Arguments" that are nothing more than logical fallacies that hold no weight.
If you can provide a real argument, do so. If you can not, shut up and go away.

Ok, so you accuse him of name calling, but you name call him yourself, I see some great maturity there!
Putting somone into a common category used to describe such behavior. Yes I have done as so. Verbal abuse. no.
Thats like saying somone is acting sick, nasty, evil, etc. when they are acting as such, and saying that calling them that is namecalling.

I am going to be blunt. Well hell when am I not blunt? I am going to SOP here:)
I think you are delusional or stupid.
You insult me, then pretend you didn't. I honestly think you belive what you say...You ignore rational arguments in favor of puerly emotional ones. You use logical fallacy one after the other without seeming to realize what you are doing.
I think you really do belive what you are saying. I don't think you have the intellectual capacity to understand why what you are doing is wrong. Or you choose to ignore it.
I did not bother to read every post so forgive me if this was already mentioned.
The main issues i see with Monster AI besides the time taken to script and computer memory issues is the fact people dont want to run a round finding monsters. If a monster was scripted to react to its enviroment it would wander off looking for food, water, when it needs to goto the toilet etc.
Even know a few of the more recent games have gone away from the static mob spawns that you could just camp for hours with one group and not have to move. Now with these types of games you have to get a whole group and run around to find one monster to fight. First game that comes to mind is SWG, i hated that, but hey it was more realistic.
Sure IF it was real life the monsters would do this and that... But the fact remains its NOT. People also get diseases and die, why dont we put that in the games we play? Random people get cancer and their char's get deleted!
Why? Just because it happens in real life does not mean it has to happen in a game. If you want to experience things like complex reactions - go talk to a friend... Games are made for people to play in spare time, not as a substitute for life - remember that.
Originally posted by reavo Originally posted by Xira Monsters with "ecology" was tried in the origonal UO and it was a unmitigated disaster.
The problems are many, for starters the begining population in no way matches the ending population. The things people hunt at first aren't the same things that are killed after say 6 months when everyone is maxed. This requires constant attention to mob reproduction tendancies, to the point that you almost have to hire someone to do it. Most places aren't willing to spend that much time on it. If you design the game for the endgame at the start you end up with no deer and dragons roaming everywhere. 2ndly, it's IMPOSSIBLE to predict what players will hunt for experiance. What if they decide to kill every deer on the planet? Sure you can say "tough luck, shouldn't have done that!", but when you spend 100 hours codeing a tanning skill and now nobody can tan because they can't find any deer to skin to skill past the newbie levels....Well are you willing to spend 100 hours to just throw away because your players do something unexpected? What if you get more players than you expected? Suddenly everything is 'overhunted' in comparision to it's reproduction rate and soon there's nothing left. What if there are less? Now the newbie areas are SWAMPED with monsters, to the point that nobody can kill anything because they draw aggro from 5 critters. So the wolves hunt the deer right? And the dragons hunt the wolves? Well what is somewhere down the road you realize that wolves are underpowered compared to the value of their pelts and have to be beefed up. Now suddenly they are wacking deer left and right, now you have to beef the deer up. Now the trees aren't growing because the deer can't be killed, nobody can get past the newbie stages, and to top it off the dragons can't kill the wolves so they all starve to death, eliminateing your high level content.
What I am driveing at here is that balance is _HARD_. Balanceing an ecosystem, even a simulated one, is _HARDER_. You know that no game releases balanced...Things are always nerfed, buffed, ectera. Now multiply that complexity by a hundredfold to take into account all the ecosystem interactions...It just makes it harder and harder the more detail you try to add.
That's why mob AI is so stupid.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of excuses for some game developers who just don't want to do what they're paid for. I don't mean that to you sarcastically, I mean it realistically.
Besides that it's like I said what if you start hunting all the deer and their pelts aren't o'plenty? That's going to piss off some hungry bears, right? So then the papa bear says, "My hume stew is just right."
I just feel like it's laziness personally. I mean God keeps our earth in balance doesn't he? And it's HUGE. These online worlds are miniscule compared.
Sorry I was just reading this forum again (though I would read the posts I missed) and I came across this one... "I mean God keeps our earth in balance doesn't he? And it's HUGE. These online worlds are miniscule compared." Umm when was the last time you went out? Incase you didnt know we have made thousands of species go extincted due to over hunting and felling of forests. Its only now that we realize our drastic influence on our environment and its already too late for most of them. Creating a fully sustainable environment is way to complex to think about with human influence. It would be possible with just animals and monsters, but once you add us into the equation... Well it gets way to hard. Sure you could make if X population >Y then kill Z amount of X mobs. Or if X mobs <Y then spawn Y amount of X mobs. It would work, but then it would not be what you asked for.
On original Topic, there are games that have somewhat MOB mentality doing things other than just standing around. There are games that allow you to build structures, grow crops and even defend yourself and Co. against MOBS.
To the rest of the the OFF Topic responses, what point are you attempting to contribute?
Sure IF it was real life the monsters would do this and that... But the fact remains its NOT. People also get diseases and die, why dont we put that in the games we play? Random people get cancer and their char's get deleted!
There WAS a game where your charecter could get a disease that would make them unplayable untiul you found friends to quest for you to get the disease cured. Griefers would run around and infect everyone with newbie charecters.
I say WAS becuase the game is now in chapter 11 bankrputcy, soon to be chap 7
Okay, I guess you guys are right. There's no way in the whoooole wide world that they could ever make the AI of the mobs any better than to stand in a crowd, wait for someone to hit one of them, consider how many people are in your group and then send an equivelant force to attack. I now know that the processing power of the new pc's would bog to molasses and I'd be completely lucky to not go linkdead.
NOT!!!!!
What has happened to you people? Is it the public school system that has sapped away the American ingenuity and creativity? No wonder why all the games I play contain little pre-pubescent anime characters. Arrrghhh....
I understand that it takes work to do this, and I understand it ain't easy. So friggin' what? So now all we do is the easy stuff that's sure to make a profit? Like I said, what happened to America? We used to be a country of risk takers and developers. Now...
Remember when computer games first came out? Maybe some of you don't but I was there. They were all completely different from each other. Defender, PacMan, DigDug, Joust... Everytime a new game came out it had a new concept. And yes there were chances taken. But now look where we're at. And you guys are on the side of companies feeding us the same old things?
Okay, I don't mean all of you guys, I take that back, I have read some posts of people wanting change. Forgive me you people who think outside of the typical mob box.
Now I'm going to go get me a beer with some buddies. We're no longer a dry county as of yesterday. See maybe America still has some hope in getting back to our old ideals. Think people, think. It hurts, it's hard, but it's sooooo rewarding. I have faith in you guys. I really do.

And as for Bill Nye, he's the one motivating kids to learn science, so someday they will think it's cool to develop things like armor that has saved mine and a lot of my buddy's lifes while we fight. So think about what you're saying.

Einstein said that trying to disprove Quantum Physics. Something that is all but proven now.
Hmmmm... not to be difficult, but we're not really in a balance.

As for mars being destroyed, I'm not quite sure where your going with that.

dude go make ur own mmorpg with mobs with "life" youll see why develepors dont do it
while ur at that go watch some more bill nye re-runs too
SWG has something close to what you suggest.

>I have absolutely no problem with debating with somone. But I refuse to do so when somone results >to namecalling. For it'll already be proven that anything said thus forth will be pointless.

Ok, so you accuse him of name calling, but you name call him yourself, I see some great maturity there!

Namecalling, "Verbal abuse; insulting language"
I fail to see how I verbally abused anyone...

I really cant believe some peoples comments.
On original Topic, there are games that have somewhat MOB mentality doing things other than just standing around. There are games that allow you to build structures, grow crops and even defend yourself and Co. against MOBS.
To the rest of the the OFF Topic responses, what point are you attempting to contribute?
There WAS a game where your charecter could get a disease that would make them unplayable untiul you found friends to quest for you to get the disease cured. Griefers would run around and infect everyone with newbie charecters.
I say WAS becuase the game is now in chapter 11 bankrputcy, soon to be chap 7
Game was horizons.
Man, glad we got back on topic.
Check back later.

Oh, and I gotta say something to this dude.
I don't have time to write a MMORPG game, I'm too busy defending your sorry ass so you can make hateful statements like that freely.
It's really easy to make comments like that in anonymity, huh? Especially when you have no idea who you're making them to.
And as for Bill Nye, he's the one motivating kids to learn science, so someday they will think it's cool to develop things like armor that has saved mine and a lot of my buddy's lifes while we fight. So think about what you're saying.
