LOTRO or EQ2, which one should I pick.

UMmm I am really confused. I played both the trials and am thinking about subbing for both but I dont have much time as I am currently doing a full time job. So I was wondering which one to pick I like them both but I havent seen much of either game as yet. Which one is better for grouping? which one has a better community? Any help from EQ2 and LOTRO veterans would be appreciated.

Ive played EQ2 a little bit.  It was descent, and i was able to do some questss and find a guild right off the bat.  I dont know about LOTRO though, it looks descent from what ive seen.  Ive heard good and bad things about both.  one thing i can guess about both games, though, is that the community isnt that big for it, so you MIGHT have trouble grouping in noob towns.  of course im comparing the size of the community to WoW which has a huge community.  But id say LOTRO IMO having not really played both to extentm because the game is new and looks kinda fun.  EQ2 has more classes and races, though, which is always a plus for me.

Both are great games in their own right, so either one you pick, I think you will enjoy.

LotR is great for more casual players.  If, as you mentioned, you have little time, then this is certainly something to consider.  Much of the content is aimed at casual, solo play.  Although there is still a convenient tool for finding groups should you wish too.

EQ2 requires a lot more time.  I think it is a much under valued game, and it really is great.  Here you will be required to group more often than LotR, especially as you get higher in level.

Both communities seem to be fairly mature, and I have made good friends in both.  I would give each game a month and see how you feel then.  Either way though, you cannot go wrong as both are very good.

Ty for the replies.....Since I am a tolkien fan I think I will roll LOTRO.

I had subscribed to both a couple months back.

LOTRO-I have a 27 hunter and 18 captain and really enjoy the story, graphics and community.

EQ2-I have a 10 Fury (druid) and found the world to be quite empty, graphics so-so (too plastic) and quests are not nearly as interesting as LOTRO.

    I recommend LOTRO.

I think LOTRO has better lore-based quests (quality, linear quests). I think EQ2 has better itemization and breadth of options.

Either are a very fine choice.

EQ2 is an old game and on the way to be a Grandma.

    Snowy,

I been playing LoTRO since Beta and recommend it highly. Plus, they got the $199 deal going on again. Pay $199 and you are a Lifetime member and never pay another sub fee again. That equals about 12 months of fees- the modern MMO monthly rate.

    I've paid $580 and $250 in fees for 2 other MMO's. over the last 5 years..so the $199 is a awesome deal.

Plus, LoTRO's future is exciting. Expansions once a year and they give us excellent Patches/Updates every 2-3 months with new content- new land masses in 2 of the patches!!

I like EQ2's game play much better than LOTRO

LOTRO was a bit too clunky and slow combat-wise, but everything else was great like obviously the story, art direction, quests, titles and deeds.

It depends on everyone's taste. For myself, I like new game with new technology.

    My wife luvs EQ2.

She has a max lvl nec and a bunch of alts she grps with our youngest daughter. I think she is a little burnt out on it right now...but I know for well over a yr(maybe 2) she played it hard core daily.

I dont think she put that much into her 70 cleric in EQ.

There is a lot to do in EQ2. She liked it cause she could solo when folks werent around(her work hrs vary).

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

I would suggest eq2 over lotro, lotro is a very good game but it just didnt have the ''it'' for me that eq2 does, Playing both eq2 and lotro from launch and beta lotro, i always go back to eq2,  I wouldnt say lotro is a bad game or anything but eq2 seems to have a more funfactor and a ton more content and eq2 seems a little more challengimg and diverse in raids and quests.

EQ2 has more classes and races to choose from, so you might want to consider that.  But lotro is a newer game too with constant updates.  There's a lot of Pros and Cons for each, but it'll take too long to list.

edit: i suggest trying the trials from both games.

For me EQ2 had better classes then LOTRO. Yet overall I like the hugely less instanced world of LOTRO and the overall game atmosphere. The story telling aspect of LOTRO for instances was much better then EQ2's instances. Of course the cohesion of dungeons quests and getting dungeon quests done in EQ2 was much better then LOTRO.

In LOTRO people only really do book dungeon quests and non-book quests are a pain to find a group for in LOTOR. In the end I guess you have to play to find out which one you like the most.

I find it hilarious that you judge the whole game based on one, level 10 character. Try leveling past 10. There are 70 more to go, you know, and a whole lot of content to discover before you say the world is "empty".

I myself can't say anything about LOTRO. I bought it when it released, played for a couple of hours and then never played it again. It wasn't because I didn't like it. I would actually love to give it another try but I can't find where I put the damn game. :D I just had too much on my plate, so to speak, so I never renewed my sub. after the 30 days was up and canceled subscriptions to a couple of other games as well.

EQ2 is a fun game though and I've played it off and on ever since it launched. Grouping isn't necessary but it does make things easier. It is possible to solo all the way to 80 but where's the fun in that? I enjoy it alot and despite the fact that I flip flop around from game to game I always come back to EQ2.

First consideration, EQ2 is SOE.   If you have any experience with SOE, I need to explain nothing further.    If not, well SOE is only interested in short term money and definitely not the gamer.   Turbine isn't perfect after AC2 but they are far better than SOE.   Many people have swore off SOE after they screwed the gamer in so many of their games.

The Turbine developer team is far superior to any team at SOE.     One example is how SOE used to charge $4.95 for mini expansions while Tubine gives them away for free.    Speaking of money LOTRO is running a special only $199 for a lifetime account or $9.95 a month, but I believe this ends today so hurry.   Yet EQ is charging $14.95 for a game nearly ten years old, EQ.     Basically SOE has done far more harm to the MMO community than good, I would avoid them.

Game to game, LOTRO has a far brighter future.    EQ2 has definitely reached its peak, while LOTRO has lots of growth to come.    If time is a factor, LOTRO is much more friendly towards the gamer with a life outside the MMO world.    Community, friendly in both games, but I found people much more mature and helpful in LOTRO.    Lore, hands down LOTRO, Mines of Moria come on who hasn't wanted to explore it?   Graphics, like most I prefer LOTRO's graphics.     Depth, EQ2 has more classes and areas, but its also nearly five years old.    If both games were the same age, I'm sure the comparison would be closer.    Price, as mentioned LOTRO running a special, its the best deal in MMOs.

Overall its not even a close comparison.   LOTRO is the only option.

Just wanted to quote the ONLY true statement from that entire troll post.

Both are good games. I have played EQ2 since launch (nov 2004) and I have always had things to do. I have tried LOTRO, and I couldn't get into it. I see this is a purely subjective thing in my side and is not the games fault. Because what I saw was pretty and well made.

I think EQ2 has a depth to it I haven't seen in many other games, but I don't know if that is because I have played it for so long and know it.

My biggest problem with EQ2 is actually not with the game, but with the publisher, SoE. I will not go into any details, because a lot of people here will know what I talk about.

SoE is also the reason why I am now trying to find another game. EQ2 in itself could probably keep me entertained for a lot longer.

If you can stand SoE, I will recommend EQ2 because it has more content (because ofI age), there is more to do and has more depth imo. But as I said before both are good games.

I have had little exposure to SOE but what little I had was enough.....such as NOT getting my free 30 days from Ruins of Kunark (which cost $40) because I had played the free trial.

I'll have to say this......TURBINE IS A 1000 TIMES BETTER THAN SOE. I MEAN WHAT"S THE POINT IN DOWNLOADING A 5 GB TRIAL TO BE ABLE TO ONLY REACH LVL 10. Trial my arse, cant trade, cant go to other places, limited to a small island, limited to lvl 10. You have to pay for evey small little expansion. What a waste of my HDD space and what a waste of my time. It took almost 2 days to download that crap file and then I come to know you can only go till lvl 10, what a bummer. I'm staying with LOTR folks, way better everything. I mean I run LOTRO pretty well on medium on my low rig system but when I try to run EQ2 my PC lags like shit, after siphoning so much money SOE still hasnt come up with a better engine.

Being someone who has played both, eq2 much longer, I would recommend eq2. They are both good games so it would really depend on you. Are you a big LoTR Fan? If you're not a big fan, the game lacks. It is very fun though and plays extremely smooth. As far as eq2, it's big. There is a ton to do and 4 expansions. If you buy RoK , you get it all. There are about 18 races to choose from and a healthy amount of classes. If you play the good side, you can betray and go over to the bad side and do that content and vise versa. As I said though, both are good games and both have trials.

    Good luck!
