The way I see it, there's two differen't types of mmo's out there.
I think AOC is the type focusing on graphics, instancing, and combat., but loses the feel you get from a traditional mmo. Quite simply, to me it feels more like an action roleplaying game. It directs you where to go and what to do, but there really isn't much more to do than just that, lol.
The other type focuses more on a wide open world with less focus on graphics and instances, but makes up for it with exploration, crafting, grouping, and the feel of actually being in another world. To me it's awesome being able to jump off the beaten path and head anywhere you want.
For me, i prefer a more traditional type of mmo, but i wont say this new approach sucks, it's just not my cup of tea. And combat wise, i thought aoc's rocked initially, but after a while i felt it was a bit too much. I mean, having 5 directional attacks on top of abilities with everything else going on around you and having to continually move just wasn't fun to me.
Anyhow, in simple terms that's how i see it and hope something comes along i can sink teeth into again.

And I would have no problem playing it, like I have no problem playing Hellgate, just label it an action RPG, and not an MMO.
LOL, I was the only person not planning to get this game. And I got it as a last minute whim. And I love it. Helps when you go in with no expectations.
The thing is I have a lot going on IRL and I like to create several characters. So I have 5 chars none of them over 35. My newest main is level 18. So by the time I get to 50 (6 months from now) All the missing content will be in there. And it help when you make the most of a RP – PvP server.
Sort of funny if you factor in the fact the I wasn't planning to play it at all. I was just going to wait for WAR.

If you read a lot of my back posts you would see that I had no intentions to get AoC, and no expectations thereof. I got AoC like a week after it was released. Sadly I should have listened to my intuition. I keep trying, trying, TRYING to like this game but it isn't working.

Sure did, I camped that stupid mammoth cloak for my druid in that ice dung for 31 hours. I forgot the name of the dung. now, but Holy cow, how stupid was that lol. I would sleep on the floor with a alarm cloak set for the re spawn lol. Ah the good old days AKA. the stupid days lol.
I thought this topic died on page 5(or was it 6?) so i didn't come back, but i read most of the responses, and let me bring some more points in.
1. About run speed and escaping, your a ranger, i played a sin(rerolled due to suckage) to a hox. If you don't know this, heres some info, not every class is as good at snaring/rooting as rangers. But then again, i didn't choose classes that had cc, i choose assassin to test out melee combat(didn't want to tank, nor did i have interest in barbarian). And rerolled HoX.
Now i do not have issues with pvp, i'm currently 55(yes i'm still playing, i'm just not overly thrilled with some of the design decisions)
2. I've always been interested in WAR, i played daoc, and i've played wow. Why wouldn't i be interested in WAR? I can enjoy both if aoc improves. But guess what? As much as i'm waiting for WAR, at the same time i'm a bit turned off by a nagging suspicion in the back of my mind about the game.
3. Content.... Heres what I did, sorry i i missed some stuff.
1-21, tortage
21-30 khemi and khopshef. Including a long time in black castle since I refused to give up on the quest once i started.
30-33ish wild lands. I did most of the quests here in these levels, admittedly i missed some of the grey ones(that i remember doing on my assassin) but i didn't feel like grabbing the grey quests from scavenged npcs)
33-35 I kinda sorta phased out during these last 2 levels... and i don't remember what i did, but i just know it wasn't fun =P
35-38 i grinded sanctum, got Vyre for my HoX, along with 2 melee rings, the caster robe and the skirt(sold the boots by accident and when i noticed it was too late to undo)
I'm 55 now. The robe and pants are better then any other one i've ever come across so far. The sword? It was replaced that night with a solo quest reward from noble tarantia.
38-40(41?) field of the dead, i finished every quest there, that was available.
40/41-43/44 noble tarantia, did every single non bugged quest there, including the chef and the poorly designed thief villas
44-46 quests in fotd
46-48 grinding in fotd due to lack of doable quests
48-49 the "undead" area of fotd quests
49-53, the FEW quests available in eig mountains, supplemented with lots of grinding(including a level of grinding in cannibal cave)
53-54 BUGGYMCBUGGMASTERS tombs. followed by the few remaining quests in eig. Back to cannibal caves.
54-55 cannibal caves
Toward the end i had to supplement in a lot of grinding. Unless theres some other areas i missed or some invisible quests, there was grinding, and it FELT like i was STRUGGLING for the little bit of quests there was. In order to quest i basically have to level and then do the +3-4 level quests that open up.
My friend who's 62 has done just as much grinding as me, if not MORE.
There is content problems. Maybe you did more grinding in areas between quests, i don't know, i'm used to powering quests(and the X marks the spot doesn't help in aoc) so that may be where our difference lies. By saying 30 being the break off point, i meant that after 30 is when you can start feeling the slow down of content coming your way, and if you say it's not, your in denial.(don't use the excuse "go do some grey quests in another zone" Do you even read your own messages?)
4. I never considered myself a die-hard of aoc beforehand. Never once did i lie about the games state, or say that any of the features in the game were anything special. All i merely argued on was instancing, EA, and siege sizes. IF it makes me a fanboy for argueing against trolls over invalid arguements. Then so be it.
5. Yes I'm a picky mmo player. You know why? Because I(we) don't HAVE to accept mediocrity. The problem is people just bend over and accept it because they are so desperate for their mmorpg "fix" That they take the good they take the bad, and then they assume they have the facts of mmos.
mmos are a video game, we pay full price for them, and then we pay monthly fees. If i pay full price for a "new" car i expect it to work properly, if i buy the new car, and it missing a lot of features that were promised, and that it was missing some things a car should have(wiper fluid, radio, buttons for your automatic windows, and only a AC system, no heater(during winter).
And then be told that i can't take it back, but rather wait for them to call me and tell me they are delivering my part(one at a time), have them install it for 4 hours, and then when i drive it again i find out that when they added the buttons for my windows, they broke the locks on my car.
I wouldn't be pleased, and i wouldn't accept it. But if i were to buy a discount used car, i would expect the problems with it, and then them offering to fix it for me over time, I would accept.
That's the difference. "But it's a mmo! It just released! It's okay!" No. No it's not.
What's gonna happen in 6 months? "The games only been out 6 months! Don't compare it to other mmos who have been out for years!"
What's gonna happen in a year? "The games only been out for a year! Most mmos have a rough first year!"
Where is the line going to be drawn? There a difference between "launch problems" And "A poor game at launch"
There is no reason to accept issues such as the ones aoc has. Server problems? Okay. Bugged content? sure, thats fine too.
Untested/poorly designed crafting system? no.
Horrible UI, and 5 year old chat commands(/invite, /friend.... Hello?)? no.
Terrible class balance? sure actually.
A ginomorous amount of broken class skills and feats. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. This is something that a beta is for. Having one broken skill is one thing, but having it being a common trend amongst all classes? no.
Terrible itemization. I'm still using level 20 items at 55! Some guildies have even lower items! one is even using a level 1 belt! and hell i use a 20 belt and it's not even better than his! it's just hp instead of stamina! Not even as a "i'm too lazy to upgrade" but "theres nothing better" Because theres so much shitty as hell stats floating around, such as armor with .1 defense and then a tiny amount of ooo cold immunity. OR casting concentration, hide, perception. Wheres the str? The int? Heck even hp/mana/sta, theres plenty of items which could use actual decent stats!
Then theres no time vs reward. Literally there is a = level sword(Vyre) that drops on a low rate from the final boss of sanctum, which is actually worse then a axe from a solo quest chain in noble tarantia. Both in the same level range, and the same item level. Then the blue "clothes" stay on you for longer periods of time, simply because theres no more items coming your way, but all they offer is a increased amount of hp/mana! in comparison to the greens which offer cold immunity of the like.
Add on that a ton of level 80 6 mans don't have loot tables, it really makes me wonder where the content team stopped trying to "fill zones" but "quickly finish zones"
This game wins in actual gameplay, but fails in all mmo aspects, including socialization, and grouping(lol @ epic mode... seriously, they need to make it a switch on chars to change modes, and have different quest sets for different modes with different rewards). And while it isn't a single player game(as the trolls call it) It seems to me like a lot of mistakes in the design are things that should be made when mmos were still new and people didn't know any better, or had very many things to compare it to. WoW came out, and showed how itemization can work with standards. then TBC came out and showed how pvp and pve can be "equal yet separate"(admittedly it's the first real mmo to seriously attempt this, so the fact that "welfare" became pvp gear, is simply because they wanted everyone to be happy.(The horror)).
Why did we suddenly step backwards in gear? Heck the game would be far better, if the "level scaling" went down and the "item scaling" went up. They have the stats in the game, i don't know why they refuse to use them.
LOL, I was the only person not planning to get this game. And I got it as a last minute whim. And I love it. Helps when you go in with no expectations.

Apart from the fact that I pre-ordered the game, I agree with you completely.
I don't get that much time in game due to events IRL, but like to play several alts. Funcom have invested a lot ot time in the early game stages, but I am sure that by the time I get to Level 50 they will have added lots more content for higher levels too.
It's not perfect, but compared to other game launches I'm quite impressed so far & really looking forward to seeing how it develops over the next few months.
If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?
LOL, I was the only person not planning to get this game. And I got it as a last minute whim. And I love it. Helps when you go in with no expectations.

I wasn't going to pick this game up either, but I actually do kind of like the single player. It's a good enough story and the action deal isn't all that bad. The only thing I couldn't ignore was the itemization, at least not at first. I really really didn't want to make a girl character in this game but between crashes, and PvP, and generally being a Bear Shaman it took me more than 12 hours to make level 20, and I did almost all of it in a loincloth and sandals. Every upgrade I got was a new loincloth and sandals. Just a little too, different, for me.
Unfortunately didn't have time to get back to 20 before that last patch put me out of commission. Can't stay logged in very long now, not that I won't keep trying.

Some people drink and go to parties, I liked to play my MMO's with my friends. Some of the rare spawns in eq requried very very long camping. And when I had the weekend from school and work me and my friends after we played football and stuff all day would get on eq and have fun. I still had a girl friend (wife now) and still go out with other friends. What is the difference? Either your outside driking or doing other stuff at night or during the day, whenever or your at home playing your hobby. People like to watch tv for hours some, if they are marathons even watch them 3 days straight. Who are you to judge others on their life style? When you clearly contradict yourself about being a nerd, discussing nerdly things according to your termonology.
You're not disproving me at all. Sitting and camping for a spawn for such an extreme amount of time is ridiculous. When you're sitting back, 80-years-old, what kind of stories are you going to tell your grandchildren?
"Ahh... I remember my teenage years. Spent many years playing the ole Everquest! You guys may have never heard of it but boy, oh boy, was it tough. I once camped out for 31 hours just to kill a giant mammoth!"
I mean that's cool if that's what you want to do but shit there is so much of life to experience. You seem to think that the only thing to do outside of an MMO is to drink and party which is ridiculous in it's own sense. Even if you want to use that comparison, playing an MMO with your nerdy friends over choosing to go out and increase social skills and social standing is dumb. You were probably the one who went to parties and no one really knew you were there. Your friends were also probably nerds so I guess maybe that is just your lifestyle. You try to say that you made all this up by "still having a girlfriend", but this is probably how it went. She was also nerdy. She probably was the first and only girl you ever dated. You dated her for so long because she actually knew you attended your school. This isn't meant to be mean but you probably never dated anyone other than her. Then again, yall could have been meant for each other, so whatever. But regardless, you sit in a game for thirty hours years on end when there's so much to life then that. I can judge others on their lifestyle because it's clear-as-day when someone is a nerdy bastard, but that shouldn't be demeaning, because that's how you choose to have fun. People who choose to watch a TV marathon (particularly sci-fi) ARE nerdy. I've never watched a TV marathon. I've always been too busy exploring the real world with friends.
Either path you choose, the MMO or real life path, you're still building skills... but one of these methods will build up a character on a game that will not matter in 20 years and the other will help you build you all throughout your life and make you who are.
I think part of the problem is that some people raced to high levels and then started screaming "we're bored your game sucks". This isn't AoC's fault, this happens in every MMO. You could make a game with a cap of 200 and someone will blitz through all the content to be The First and then get bored.
Also, the pvpers are unhappy but I wonder if that is due to the fact funcom added a buff that you are invulnerable for a short time after you load in to a zone. Means they can't corpse camp anymore and one-shot the lowbie they just one-shotted 10 secs ago. Seems a tad too coincidental that after that buff gets put ingame, the complaints about pvp start picking up.
Funcom already announced that they have content planned for this summer. Pretty much addresses most of the issues some people seem to have with the game now.

I think that's part of the problem. You have hit the nail on the head.
There is a way to keep people beyond level cap and endgame content. It's based on giving them tools to create their own adventures. It's also social.

1. Content ends at 50. It takes VERY little time to level in aoc up to 55. After that "we're bored your game sucks" Sorry. It's not excusable with any excuse to not even have enough content to level.
Theres NOTHING to do besides "blitz" in aoc. Crafting sucks, gathering sucks, guild cities are only done by guild leaders. PvP in the nxt point.
2. PvPrs are unhappy because of a few things
a. No blood money in game.
b. No sieges
c. Instanced battlegrounds are terrible, the queues(at least on doomsayer) are long enough to need to occupy yourself in the meanwhile, and then it's generally just a chaotic "do whatever you want" fest.
d. No PvP lev els.
e. What do the PvPs have to be "happy" about?
3. Summer can go all the way to august. And that helps us now...how?
Simply luck that they managed to have servers be as stable as they are, and the combat to be so fun in pve.
1. They have no clue how to itemize a game. +casting concentration, and +off hand chance on quest items, amazing. 1-50 and no cloth armor for HoXs, but assassins sure didn't get left out =P. +perception on items. Seriously is that a real item stat? cloaks with +0.00% immunity? it's not even like they are obscure cloaks.
2. Content. Was the game even tested past level 30? unless you find grinding mobs in overcamped areas to be fun. The quests simply aren't enough. They -had- potential, but a real issue is that quests don't reward exp for the individual steps at times. And i think they assume your supposed to earn more exp during the quests then you actually do. Terrible respawn timer on quest npcs is just the tip of the iceberg.
Add on the terrible itemization, and tons of worthless items.
Then lets look at crafting, ignoring the broken gems. A level 50 green weapon is stronger then a level 50 BLUE CRAFTED weapon. Why?
3. Customer service. Worse than in any game i've ever seen. The only company i've ever heard of that actually deletes petitions on a massive scale instead of actually helping players, not ignoring because the servers lagging, or crashing, but rather having their characters crippled because of it.
Go onto the doomsayer server, theres a guy spamming in ooc because no gm will answer his petitions for 5 days. I've had my petition deleted because of a item which crashes me. Terrible support.
4. Tons of bugs. I'm sorry but i'm at my limit for bugs. using a 2h axe on my hox it oftentimes starts floating away from my body as if my hands are 2-3 feet longer then they are. I've had body parts go missing when i change from a robe to a shorter robe at times. Cotton doesn't harvest, some broken quests. These are fine. Small issues.
But then you get issues with gems crashing you if you socket them and then gms refusing to assist you.
Tons of terrain which you cant just "run across" but rather have to jump on because you get stuck. Quest npcs which are insanely long respawn times, or areas which are overpopulated with mobs and respawn too quickly. Tons of broken feats, and other abilities.
5. PvP casters sprinting easier and getting less penalized. The fact that you cant combo while moving and unless two melee are duking it out or your fighting someone you cc'd your not gonna get combos off.
The fact that you can't combo while moving. The fact its so easy to move and escape when getting attacked.
Seriously did anyone ever play ranged classes in beta? it seems to me like the system was designed around people just standing there and taking it... or melee classes who just stand there and combo each other till one dies... it simply doesn't happen that way. And it should have been known to funcom ages ago that it doesn't.
But once the "omg amazingly fun awesome combat and fatality system" wore off. I'm really left asking... what is there in the game worth doing? I really don't know yet... I struggle to find any quests to do. I struggle to find -any- items to get(seriously who thought scaling due to level and basically not at all from gear was a good idea, i feel like i i could have simply killed the same mob and never looted a single item and id be just as good as someone who quested, crafted, and instanced, and i don't feel it should be that way.
sigh i was really loving this game, i just was at my breaking point, and then i ran face first into this customer service fiasco. If i wait in queue for a gm to assist for 4-5 hours, then the gm doesn't respond, i don't recieve a msg saying why, or anything of the sort. while recieving updates that im going to be helped, and that i'm getting closer to being helped. When actually i'm not.
Wow bummer... I've never had to contact a GM for anything, I don't what problems you get or something. I think I can't do my lv30 destiny quest cause it got bugged, but I didn't care
I don't even recongnize the problems you face... its kinda funny. Maybe when one happens I either laugh cause its funny, like the HoX glitch I always laugh at, when i go naked for a few seconds changing gear I laugh a little. And once my character looked like he got stuck in Jesus Stance (looked like the cross) with my arms stuck outward... it was really funny.
so you cant do your level 30 destiny quest because it is bugged but you dont care?#
Lol well thank god not every player thinks like you or we would never play a game worth while playing would we?
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
Er Guild Wars had sold over 5 million boxes. Pretty sure it destroys most MMORPGs in that department other than WoW or Lineage1/2.
There are also a lot of people that think Charles Manson was great.
Nobody plays Guild Wars.
I do.
But, really, its not like it matters. See, GW is free. For those keeping track, thats a pretty nice "game play element" to have. It leaves me open to play it whenever I want. Hell...for what it is, it offers more polished content than most MMO's anyway. Thats not the point, though, and I digress.
There is no need to trash on GW, its a staggering success given its choice in medium. The discussion here is about AoC, and the fact that someone finally decided they didn't like it for a given number of reasons.
so you cant do your level 30 destiny quest because it is bugged but you dont care?# Lol well thank god not every player thinks like you or we would never play a game worth while playing would we?
For real. I mean, it's only the destiny quest, the main story of the game. Why should that work right?
Oh yea btw, enjoy the cloak you get for completing your level 50 destiny quest. The one you get from completing the quest in the sanctum, at level 40ish, is much better.
Simply luck that they managed to have servers be as stable as they are, and the combat to be so fun in pve.

I have to agree with you on the itemization. Its tough sometimes to figure out what's the best gear to use. Is that lvl 10 item with more favourable looking stats better or worse than the lvl 18 or item with less stats?
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
lol, that is why i still play the beta, hahaha, not gonna pay for something tht isnt near finished.great foundation though, need about six months of tweaking that im not gonna pay for. around christmas time this game will be gem and i can request it as a xmas present
Ive reached my breaking point in beta and seeing how things didnt get corrected before release, I played it for a few days afterwards and quit cold turkey. Kinda funny to come here now and see all the unhappy players.
Say what you want but MMORPG.com delivers. This game might not be total crap but alot of it is and most, if not all, of Funcom's CS and support is COMPLETE garbage.

" I have played more then 24 hours straight on Old eq, and I GURANTEE YOU there are people that have done it longer. "
Listen to the OP people. Don't buy this P.o.S. if you haven't already.
Especially if you're a PvP'er. Holy crap was I disappointed.
Take the Hecatomb? TCG What Is Your Doom? quiz.
Unfortunately didn't have time to get back to 20 before that last patch put me out of commission. Can't stay logged in very long now, not that I won't keep trying.
I apologize on the behalf of everyone who is not a god damn nerd and have fulfilling lives.

You're not disproving me at all. Sitting and camping for a spawn for such an extreme amount of time is ridiculous. When you're sitting back, 80-years-old, what kind of stories are you going to tell your grandchildren? Some people drink and go to parties, I liked to play my MMO's with my friends. Some of the rare spawns in eq requried very very long camping. And when I had the weekend from school and work me and my friends after we played football and stuff all day would get on eq and have fun.
There is a way to keep people beyond level cap and endgame content. It's based on giving them tools to create their own adventures. It's also social.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/235780/page/8
Nobody plays Guild Wars.
I do.
But, really, its not like it matters. See, GW is free. For those keeping track, thats a pretty nice "game play element" to have. It leaves me open to play it whenever I want. Hell...for what it is, it offers more polished content than most MMO's anyway. Thats not the point, though, and I digress.
There is no need to trash on GW, its a staggering success given its choice in medium. The discussion here is about AoC, and the fact that someone finally decided they didn't like it for a given number of reasons.
Oh yea btw, enjoy the cloak you get for completing your level 50 destiny quest. The one you get from completing the quest in the sanctum, at level 40ish, is much better.
I have to agree with you on the itemization. Its tough sometimes to figure out what's the best gear to use. Is that lvl 10 item with more favourable looking stats better or worse than the lvl 18 or item with less stats?
