WAR - Graphics

The graphics in this game look similar to WoW, is this correct? WoW is a few years old now and I think it now looks dated when compared to EQ2, LOtR and now Conan. I was hoping for a more advanced looking game. Can anyone shed any light.

and before the flames start I have enjoyed WoW but in my opinion it looks a little old now, roll on WoW2.

Maybe because Warcraft is nearly a direct ripoff of the Warhammer Fantasy Lore that was out for 25 years now. Besides that, if you're talking about graphics technology, everything you've seen is just the skeletons. There's no high res textures, advanced shading and lighting...basically the graphics set on very very low so they can test the core gameplay mechanics. You don't need the highest setting graphics for that; it'll come later.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Yeah, the graphics in WAR are based on 25 years of artwork in the Warhammer TT and Fantasy series.  If they had made a game that looked like AOC all the Warhammer players past and present would have issued a collective "WTF is this?"  People can claim WAR is a WoW clone all the want, and sure, WoW made the style familiar in mmo form first, but I for one am glad Warhammer is sticking to its roots and not trying to reinvent a 25 year old IP.

From what I've played I would say that the graphics are more advanced than what you find in WoW in certain aspects.  I believe you're referring more to the art direction rather than the graphics themselves.  When it comes to art direction; WAR is drawing from the IP and doing a great job of it in my opinion.

From what i've seen, and taking into account the poor quality of posted footage, i think the graphics of WAR is better than WoW.  The graphics look very similar to that of GW, its just that the characters of WAR are not technically realistic, which i think may make the graphics looks similar to that of WoW's.

stop looking at current wow and comparing it to old chipset alpha war. This is war now. it looks NOTHING like wow. and the mechanics are not even close.

Exactly! WAR  has absolutely no comparison in graphics to WoW with the new engine. Why can't people just let it go now?  And you should probably go and check out the most recent screenshots of WAR, you'll be quite amazed.

I agree that the artistic style is simillar, but the graphics are clearly more advanced.

I admit, when I watched a gameplay video for the elf witch I thought, wow that looks like Warcrack. O.o But I also noticed a distinct lack of clunky artwork, low polygons. and cartoonish animations and setting.

But having been a tester in several games, I know not to believe that, that is how the game will look when finished. :)

WoW graphics are cartoonish. I find WAR graphics much more polished and designed to immerse you more into the game and your character.

Can't wait to play it! Anyone know what the graphics are going to require out of your computer?

*Sigh* is right. How about this...

WoW is soooooo good you should stay there! Do not go out and buy Warhammer, do not TRY the advanced RVR style of fighting and do not , please, of god, do not try something other then WoW, the first mmorpg ever made in the history of game and humankind. Please, my friend , stay with WoW, and keep your game alive.

Actually I think EQ was first... and then Warcrack came along and tried to clone EQ... and for the most part failed since they left out all the stuff that I think makes EQ/2 fun.

Also I watched that comparison video and that witch elf video  must have been some mock-up pre-alpha engine from three years ago.

I think graphics are a little similar too but who cares. Its about the gameplay. The graphics are pretty good anyways. As long as it has fun gameplay that is all that matter and it won't really matter how similar or different it is from wow or any other game. I playing Warhammer for RVR plain and simple.

This topic is so played out already.  First off, WoW copied the Warhammer style.  Warhammer  was released in 1983 and Warcraft was released in 1994 (according to both of the wikis).

Would most people love to have incredible graphics?  Of course the answer is yes.  Do most people have top notch computers that could run anything flawlessly?  No.  One of the reasons WoW does so well is because their game can run on some shitty computers.  Mythic is taking the same approach as Blizzard, and it is a smart choice.  Another thing to remember is Warhammer will revolve around RvR (pvp), where as WoW revolves around PvE with PvP on the side.

Anyway...  I can't afford a brand new top of the line computer, or even huge upgrades for that matter.  My computer is a little over 2 years old.  I will be very happy if I could run Warhammer since it would save me a shitload of money.  I'm sure many people are in the same boat.

    Aye,

if your trying to target the most people you can, its best to be sure the target can play the game. Making a game that requires future tech won't yield the best results and by the time tech catches up, your target audience is off playing something newer.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

  • KusanohaKusanoha Member Posts: 47

Yeah they off playing something newer. But at the same time, games like Call of Duty 4 come out, and you don't NEED a top notch PC for it... but it makes it incredable to play if you do have one.

I'd much prefer they manage the same level of detail and customization in an MMO, but I think that's wishful thinking.

    [Begin Sarcasm]

Girls don't use the internet unless theres a webcam involved....its a physical impossibility.

They also don't play them thar vidya gaymes, mmorpg = most men online role play girls...even in ventrillo.

I personally don't like the way the characters look in this game at all, I don't know why but I just don't like how they look.

The environments however are really well done and I like those a lot.

The Warhammer videos and screens that we see now are some what high-res models, but they arn't finished polishing them and we still have not seen the completely 100% finished lighting system yet.

Go to this link below and look at the video blog "orc lighting"

    http://herald.warhammeronline.com/videoblog/blog2008.php

That imo is better than how WoW looks right now.

...and the OP was just asking if anyone could give him some insight on what to expect graphics wise from Warhammer, but then people write out paragraphs about Warhammer was out when Moses split the Red Sea and Warcraft didn't come out until... I dunno whenever.

WAR graphics are more advanced than WoW and yet they are targeting  mass market to be able to play. Those with better rigs will definitely have better graphics( Hi res will be implemented later). Those with mid range computers will be able to play and I do think that may be some low end will be able too.

As for the similarities,Warcraft art is driven from Warhammer thus the wowfeel when you first grab the game but the comparison stops right here.So we will have to wait until  every features from the engine, graphics, lighting and so to be implemented then we will have the real beast

The whole "but warhammer had this look first" argument is completely bonkers... Well Tolkien came up with the idea of orcs way before Warhammer ever came about so does that mean that LotR is the only game that matters whether it came first or last? Warhammer is just a copy and so is WoW?

You cannot deny the fact that WoW and Warhammers art resembles eachother... They were based on the same ideas. But what you can do is look at how warhammer knew that blizzard had used this style of art and is currently the most popular game and see how they decided to go with the whole tried and true to steal customers away from WoW thinking it will be easy for them to integrate into a new game.

On another note on the side of graphics quality... WAR is coming out in 2008? 2009? Who really knows with how long it's been in the making but WoW came out in 2004 after three strategy warcraft games which is was modeled on. Which drew it's ideas from Warhammer fantasy... If wow decided to do a graphics overhaul it would look more like the current WAR?

Anyways, this still does not remove the fact that 4 years later... Warhammer decides to make a game that is so similar to an already popular game to steal it's thunder. Warhammer really should have brought something new to the table but I guess we all have to cry about our shitty 4 year old computers that could barely run WoW at the time...

Somone on these forums once said (a long while back, I think) that WOW's style of graphics age better than the more realistic type.  I remember back in 2004, being more impressed with EQ2 than WOW, but today EQ2 looks sort of dated, while WOW has a timeless artistic style.

I think WAR will do okay, graphics-wise.

I really love the look of the characters and the environments of WAR, but then I've always liked the Warhammer universe.
