Its kinda weird and funny, but no matter where I go, wether in betas or trials or what, I always return to good olde EQ2. And I had tried out a lot, always thinking to find "greener grass", trying out Tabula Rasa, LOTRO, Vanguard, AoC, PotBS and even DAoC in the last 7 months or so, but nothing held me, and in the end I returned like the faithful husband to EQ2. Its a bit like with the difference between wife and the girl and the corner. The latter may look much more sexy on first glance, but people return to their wives, because they can cook and they understand you. Sort of.
Oh my. In some way I never understood why EQ2 didnt get more players. Compared to the many mediocre and bad games I still think the game is a real peal, sure not perfect, and I do have my issues with it, but so far it is WAY the most balanced, deep and complex game system I have seen. It is neither too easy or fast food-like, nor too difficult and cumbersome.
Just looking at the always coming new things, added races, expansions, adventure packs asf, the MANY MANY quests and quest TYPES, you can just do so many different things, it still amazes me. Wether you want to solo, group, raid, craft, want housing, events... there is so much to do.
So, if you dont know what to play, do yourself a favor and try it out.
Not new anymore, but still maybe you wanna watch my EQ2 3 years tribute video:

Yeah I hear ya buddy, after playing dozens of mmo's i always go back to eq2.
playing eq2 and two worlds
I think the problems lies in that it took SOE over a year to get the game in a decent playable state and many have bad memories of the game during that time. A lot of players retain that bad experience and are loath to try it again.
It is not a bad game. It still has issues as can be seen from the recent dev chat, but I am not sure SOE is going to make any changes beyond adding more high end content.
For a new player, who does not get to see all that high end content, the game is still a bit daunting.
SOE is not doing anything different than the other developers, even Blizzard is not addressing issues with it's low level areas, continuing to only add high end content.
SOE needs a new change of leadership, Smedley is just steadily running the company into the ground.
Sorry to say, but EQ2 is the poorest optimalized game in world's history. It simply isn't running with 8800gtx and vistax64 bit no matter what you do. You either have 10-15fps or you get CTD's or even BSOD's. And you can't do shit about it.
REALITY CHECK
The whole new timourous maw area is for new low lvl players, it is quite pretty to and the quests tyhere are fun.

Yer right vista sux, there are issues atm on the 2 live gamer servers, but aside from that i can run on extreme quality with little to no lag on other servers, you may want to check yer system or get rid of vista,

I'm the same as OP. I try a lot of games but always keep EQ2. I even played WoW for over 3 years but cancelled for AoC (which I think is a great game). I only subscribe to two games at a time and EQ2 has been one of the two for almost 4 years. So now it is AoC and EQ2. I probably will be playing EQ2 until SOE turns the lights out on it.

Thank you for your sophisticated opinion, but I like Vista and I have no problems using Vista with any other game I like (VG, Lotro, DDo, Gothic3...) The OS is more secure, more stable, runs better, looks better, more features ... It's EQ2 issue that is unable to cope with a new OS.

which is exactly why i suggested getting rid of vista.

And as far as gaming goes, i dont think vista does any real beuty to any games unless they dupport dx-10 and i know lotro supports dx-10 but im not sure about the rest.

I played EQ2 for about 2 years, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its a good solid game, better in many ways than others I've played. I have also done my time in WoW, Lotro, CoH, and DDO. They are all decent games, worth playing, at least for a while. However, Im a little disappointed in the direction SOE has been taking EQ2. Its much easier and less challenging than before.
Im currently playing AoC, but am quickly losing interest. Rather than returning to EQ2, Ive decided to return to EQ1 and play on the Firiona Vie server for 'something a bit different', and perhaps more challenging. There is a current offer by SOE to give all the expansions and 2 months of free play to returning players, up until July 25. My gf and I plan to two box and explore all the zones. Our goal is simply to hunt named for a kind of sandbox style gaming, where we will rp treasure hunters. Otherwise grouping in EQ1 is abysmal at lower levels. No real interest in end-game EQ1 raiding.
Im hoping against hope that either Darkfall or Mortal Online can meet their promises and actually go live. Im pretty tired of theme-park games in general, and really want to try a sandbox game for a change. I would check out Eve, but Im not a big fan of highly technical Sci-Fi games. Not very interested in Warhammer either.
When Sacred 2 and Mythos come out, Ill probably give them a whirl also. I loved playing hardcore Diablo 2, and in fact still play the Eastern Sun modded version of the game from time to time. Both Sacred 2 and Mythos are hack and slash Diablo style games, which offer permadeath or hardcore mode. Sigh, I guess Im a gaming whore....pretty promiscuous.
why would you be running vista 64 to play video games??? That's enterprise software, try vista home or xp home or pro, but go back to 32 bit asap.
Wake up and smell the coffee. Nothing beats WoW. Nuff said.
idk im still stuck playing final fantasy online still after all these years.
Dont know if the issue above relates now or not.
I like EverQuest II a lot.
I'm a big supporter of SOE in general as well.
But I had to quit for a few reasons.
None of my friends can get into EQII the way I did.
It's ridiculously hard to find a group of people that enjoy grouping pre-30. What I consider to be the meat and potatoes of the low game.
SOE made big engine mistakes, and won't try to fix them. Hindsight is donkey-punching some people at SOE lately with duo cores becoming more popular.
The original world graphics are quickly becoming dated, and there's no sign of Sony caring.
I know I'll go back after a few months, play for a month or two, and quit again like I've done before. But there's no huge improvements to EQII. I want to pay a company for improvements, not polish.
WoW is crap, it was fun until end-game then it turned out to be all about gear and how to squeeze in that 1 extra point to your stats. EQ2 is much more immersive, with meaningful crafting, and player housing. Until wow adds in Non-combat content, it will always be a failure to me regardless of how many people play it, after all 90% of the people in the world are idiots!
Yea right if vista 32 bit sucks, vista 64bit sucks twice.
Im playing the game on xp,with a 8800gtx ,3 gigs of ram and i get 50+ fps no matter what with maxed out settings, not sure how you define the "isnt running" thing there.
Odd, I'm on SLi 8800GTS 640s with 64bit Vista and run with everything maxed smooth as buttah.
The guy is talking about absolutely different gameplay than WoW - sandbox gameplay. I also miss sandbox gameplay last years and for me WoW is most boring and predefined MMO released ever.
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

I have the exact same card and OS and it runs between 30-40fps all the time {shrug}

I play on a Vista Ultimate 32-bit system with no issues at all. In fact every game I've run has run fine in Vista so far. Crysis, HL2, Bioshock, etc. Even old games in DOSbox work good.
I am having a decent time in it. Right now I have a lifetime sub for LoTRO, still 2 more weeks on my AoC account, and what is left on my 60 on EQII (thanks SOE) and I spent most of my weekend playing EQII. I will probably pay for 1 more month at least at the end of this 60 just to get the expansions and am thinking about swapping servers where some old friends of mine are playing. I always have liked EQII and it has some very very good points about it. The animations are very good and the armor and clothing graphics are still the best of any game in my opinion. I always enjoyed the mini game in crafting, although I knew that for some it was a sore point in the beginning.
If everything works out I will hang in EQII until either WAR releases or the LoTRO expansion. I am going to at least try WAR and I am drooling in anticipation of the Moria expansion for LoTRO. All in all it is turning out to be a very good year for this old MMORPG gamer.
oh and I am running fine at the highest default graphics settings getting 30 - 50 FPS with a EVGA 8800GTS 640 running stock speeds and a E8400, also stock, using 2 gig of ram and WinXP. My only issue is when I exit the game hangs and I have to give it the three key salute.
I miss DAoC
It is a very good game, but me and my wife don't care for it because of the forced teaming later on.
You cannot level up for shit in the 50s and 60s w/o a team, and that is crappy to me.
EQ2 has run fine for me on various crappy computers, so i would not blame EQ2 for your crappy performance.
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
lol high lv forced grouping ?? you want to get the karnak xpansion and see if ya can find a party there its a solo thing up to lv78 plus fadark was solo all the way if ya want to.
its the reason i left the game was a lv70 mystic and no one wanted to party eq2 is just anouther wow now used to be a great group game but not any more.
