The environments just look empty.....

Looking at all the screenshots theres no fantastic architecture going on and no breathtaking moments in them. I know all I've seen so far is videos and screenshots but atleast in other mmorpgs I've seen there is some fantastic stuff going on in like WOW and even Age of Conan. With WAR however it just ends up looking like a cartoony version of EQ2 where theres this big open space and they've stuck some pregenerated crap to fill up the space and theres hardly any detail to the world. It's not that it even looks darks and gritty like the CG trailer which is how I wish'd it looked but it's just drab and barren and miserable, kinda world it looks like I wont have fun playing in because it just is soooo boring.

Youre seeing mostly alpha and early beta videos and probly current videos. They are just there to give examples of this or that. You want breath-taking scenery... youll have to wait til the nda is lifted. Im sure lots of beta-testers have been taking really nice screenies.

LOL, here's a tip. Never ever ever judge a beta games graphics and design. I think you're gonna be in for a pleasant suprose when open beta rolls out. Thats all I'm really allowed to say...

Aye I agree. Once they let us beta testers speak you will hear some really neat stuff. To the OP, I would check out more of the videos than the screenshots. What I can say about the time I played at a Gamesday convention the world is very full.

They look fine to me. It has a unique style, they aren't really supposed to look THAT alive because it's a war-torn world. Things tend to die when there's war. If it was all shiny and pretty people would call it a rainbow cartoon. I like the architecture of the Empire's buildings, they're REAL. I mean there were buildings like that in the late Middle Ages...that's great for the immersion factor.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Dunno, about the only thing that worries me about WAR graphics so far is that the building models look a bit sqareish to me... Too many 90 deg and 45 deg angles, so the whole thing looks a teeny bit boxy.

The secret of WoW's art direction is that there is probably not one right angle in the whole game so everything looks much more organic and natural. I hope building designers apply a bit of a stagger to their points before the release.

Otherwise everything looks just fine and in tune with the IP. When they add full lighting and polish up the animations it's going to be a treat!

I know this is beating a dead horse, but people dont seem to read the other posts with similar topics before reposting a new (old) thread.  There are 0..ZERO..high res graphics in WAR atm.  Unlike other games that run beta with high res graphics and let the game play testing suffer, or doctor up their screen shots to make them nice and shiny, WAR does not do that.  But I can tell you that when playing, even without the high res models in yet, it sure is purty.  But go ahead..continue to look at low res screenshots of a game without high res models in atm and make your judgement.  People that pre judge games they've never played that are in closed beta are pretty much win anyways...no really.  For real.  Seriously.  I'm sure you'll be missed if you dont play.  Just keep telling yourself that!

Just think like a Faction in a constant WAR, "why should we build anything with intricate curves and pretty designs when we know its prolly gonna get knocked down!"  So much easier and faster to just build it square that's much more sturdy and has a better chance of not getting destroyed so often.

You are going to love the game, trust me. It plays well, looks great, and has a rich history behind it. As others have said, don't judge the game by a few screen shots and videos. I mean, I hate to do this but... Vanguard had incredible screens and videos, and look at it now lol. Moral of the story? Never judge a game by it's screen shots.

Nah, I don't mean all curvy and intricate...

If you've been in a real medieval/renaissance city you'd notice how buildings never really go exactly straight up. They all lean on each other. Everything is a bit sqewed and not really mathematically perfect.

In conditions of total perpetual war buildings will get thrown up even faster and with less emphasis on the precision of their lines. On that tech level a perfect "box" of a building was much harder to produce than a quaint house threatening to fall on itself. No, they didn't have CAD programs, satellite positioning and precision instruments back then... Heck, they were just discovering the decimal system and moving away from roman numerals and fractions. The precise mathematical lines in todays architecture are a consequence of industrialization and new materials that would have been unimaginable in middle ages.

Just look at GW minis of Empire (and other races) buildings. There is this quaint, untidy quality to them which I find very appealing. Somehow this gives them a lot of character. I'd like to see this approach used on WAR buildings as well.

And to add to the person above me... when the Crusades were happening, the soliders brought back a unique building design: Rounded towers. Before that, square was the norm. Its alot harder to smash a tower that doesnt have a weak point (the corners), than it is to smash a rounded wall. Its also why the best shields are not flat surfaces but are bowed out somewhat. ^.^

The crusades part might be in error, I know at some point Europeans discovered round towers.

I think you are close. Most rounded design came from Turkish and Muslim influences.

During the Crusades, Israel was a mostly Muslim country... but youre right about the Turkish/Muslim part.

I also love the sloppy haphazard look of a lot of really really old cities, like Prague for example. Even thought its stone walls and cobbled streets. They look a lot more earthy and comforting than giant metal buildings with laser-precision angles.

Nothing can top the homey-ness of an Irish peat-house, or those Scandenavian houses from the middle ages with the huge cone rooves. And windmills. :D

Youre kinda missing the point... Israel existed long before the muslim religion was even thought of. Israel = Jerusalem... alot of the Crusades were fought to take the holiest city of three religions away from the muslims so the pope could have it. If Im remembering my history right, the Catholic church wanted to set up the vatican on the temple mount. They didnt want to give it back to the Jews...

I love how in some areas when the population got too big, instead of building outward they build upward, pretty much building a new city on top of the old one while still using both. You can see this is Scotland and a few other places. I guess it was easier than comprimising security and having to rebuild walls.

I love how war looks personally.

At least it's not gonna be like AoC, all graphics, no content.

Well if they're realsing these horrible videos and screenshots then why can't I judge them? That's the whole point of releasing them to get people excited over the game and I worry if this is all they can do then it's abit sad.

I love the Warhammer universe but there has yet to be a good Warhammer game and I know poeple will say Dawn of War but I hated that game cuase it has too many races and not enough detail.

Graphics look okay, action looks a little slowed, but maybe that helps folks to think about tactics instead of zerging.

I do like the hint of DAOC in the graphics and welcome a return to more realism after four years in the cartoonish WOW.

Why? Ever heard the expression, dont judge a book by its cover? Ive have been guilty of that, but read the book anyway and was amazed at how good the book was despite the cover looking like a preschooler drew it.

Those videos youre complaining about are demonstration videos. They arent there to show you how the world will look when its finished or how great the char-creation is. They are there to show you examples of whatever it is they demonstrating. Such as pvp or combat, or spell-casting. Or even crafting.

Mechanics come first, then the skeletons and all the underlying models. One of the last things applied is the "spit and polish." Making the world not look like its still in Alpha testing.
