Spammers are annoying. I think MMOs should take an idea from FFXI and kinda adopt the world pass system, but not in the sense that its used in FFXI.
When you create an account you are assinged pass keys that you can give to friends so they can send you /tells and ingame mail when they are under a certain level (say lvl 10). Have it so any character that is created cannot send any mail or /tells until they hit level 10 (unless its on the same account so you can still mail your own toons crap). This would prevent spammers from hocking thier gold by starting up a new toon. And the level 10 req would make it more of a hinderence because every time they get banned, it would require starting a new account and investing an hour to three hours to get to level 10 just so they can spam.
Sure it wouldnt stop spammers all together, but it would make it more of a pain for them to conduct thier business.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Not at all. In many of my previous threads, I admit I'm holding off on buying AoC, but have pretty much stated that I'll be buying a copy and playing it. And, of course, It would be foolish to think my buying or not buying a game will affect its trend.
I'll probably try out a FFA server, because I like to fight gankers. But I'll also try an RP-PvP-oriented server because I'm looking for a community that really knows how to play.
I do agree with your "try it for yourself" mentality, because the burden of choice is ultimately yours to bear. And yes, you could be a.....

Let's get to the nuts and bolts of the situation. You either like the game and play or don't and not play. The biggest problem the mmo community faces are all brought upon itself.
With every new mmo that launches, the majority of mmo players are lusting for it to be the big WOW killer and have a sub base that equals what WOW has. This type of thinking is hurting the whole genre and is counter productive.
MMO's today are so cloesly coded, they pretty much all play out the same and offer very little to the paying customer. Long gone are the days when mmo's offered something differant and unique. Everquest didn't play like SWG and UO didn't play like DAOC.
These games all felt differant, and had their loyal sub base. Then comes WOW and it's gigantic community. All of sudden the genre is flooded, even to this day with copycats and wannabe's.
All MMO"S should not be created equal, and by it's own merit have a sub base whatever size that may be, stand on it's own and not have to worry about trying to compete for customers from another game.
Is it so bad that a new mmo at it's height only reaches say 200k to 500k and not 2 mill. Does that deem it a failure. Alot of people want to throw around the term niche game, if an mmo that is being developed is not in the mold of WOW, and doesn't cater to the whole casual gamer market.
The question is, do i think AOC is a failure or success. Personally after being in CB i would say the game is not for me. That's not saying it's not for everyone though. I can honestly see it keeping around the 200k to 500k loyal players.
The number one objective, if i was a MMO developer, would be to create a game that was unique and totally differant than anything else, and cater to the loyal community that calls the game home.
Anything more than that is foolish and a waste of time , money, and developement.

You might be right, but I don't think WOW's market strategy is truly being appreciated. Blizzard's product line boasted 3 World of Warcraft games...from the same company... before the MMO ever came into existance. Do you know of any other MMO doing the same? I do not. Lord of the Rings is close with the books and games.
It might be important to note that Blizzard has had numerous product ventures, including the Diablo series and Starcraft, which I still see in Wal-marts and Targets. So, once again, the WOW "basket", is not simply the MMO, but the product lines and Customer Service behind the MMO.
And as is typical, anyone with some capital will try to duplicate the WOW model....make their profit, and bail out.
Like you, I would like to see a unique game...one that takes PvP and community, approaching all the aspects with a frame of mind "outside the box".

Hey Cryptor,
When I try out AoC, I'll head over to your server. No hating here.

I really dislike the second option being called 'Fail'. Being a person that quit playing AoC I had no other option then to chose 'Fail', however I am being realistic here, just because I personally didn't find AoC to my liking, I do not expect the game to fail. I am sure that the game will do ok (maybe not by WoW's standards but what other game does that?), especially once it gets ironed out and the content gets patched in. And it will probably bloom again once xbox crowd joins in in a few months.
AoC will likely fail because 1. The World is too restrictive: each of the hunderds instances is a cell (some very small), movement is restrictive - just follow the path. So immersion suffers because the world feels like mosaics made of many separate zones and instances. 2. The game is not finished, missing content at higher levels and lack of end game makes it hard to enjoy the game after the first week. Funcom will resolve this eventually but by that time Warhammer will be out.. 3. Combat mechanic, while interesting at first, doesn't live up to expectations when you group. It seems to chaotic and mindless and without any strategy.
1) WTH are you talking about here? I find shortcuts on most maps where I just ran across the zone not following the path P. Even on tortage you can find a shortcut here are there. But off the island, you are in no way restricted to the path. Try this play the game then post, rofl.
2.) Hmm I am lvl54 now and havent seen a lack of content. I fully expect by the time majority of the players are even close to max level, content will be fine and dandy. Please if you would, list the other MMO's that had all of the end game content in play at lanuch? I cant think of one P. Although early on some did have issues with strictly quest leveling, but you can always group and gain exps for levels faster then EQ.
3.) Hmm, Knockdown, stuns, roots, instance nukes vs heavy hitting nukes, fire vs electric (for me Demo). Come at me just pushing buttons with no strat and you will be at the respawn soon. This game has more strats for combat than most other MMOs I can remember, like old SWG , with KD, Stuns, snares and roots, and for my necro friends, dots and pets. It is big fun for me.
Bottom line, play then post please. Garbage like this quoted post show trolling at its finest. No knowledge of the game, just crash it with unfact filled random blurbs. The force is weak with that one P.

And why exactly do you assume I didn't play the game? Your childish attitude doesn't help the OP or anyone else.
I have the right for opinions. I posted what I thought about the game. But hey why trust me? There are more competent people than me talking about AoC failure.
1. Did not live up to half the hype (disappointing) 2. 'Revolutionary' Combat was a dumbed down (Xbox friendly) version of normal MMO combat. 3. Too small in every aspect of gameplay and exploration.
It was only revolutionary in the fact it was never really used in an MMO. Other than that its like playing Golden Axe.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
It's is revolutionary for the melee classes - no doubt, the question remains it it's a good novelty. The more I play the more I see its shortcomings.

You should have voted awesome then. What I was looking for is not whether you liked it or not, but what you thought the momentum of the game would ultimately be. Perhaps, "Awesome" and "Fail" were too strong of terms...
If having a dedicated and reliable player base that keeps the game running for 3+ years is how you define an "Awesome" successful game, then you should vote "Awesome". Even if you don't like it....

Hey everybody,
Love it or hate it....I'm trying to focus on how the game will trend, not how it is at the moment. For example, if you believe it will trend towards a FAIL (Read: FAILURE), then perhaps your reason might be:
1. They will continue to lose sight of the importance of good customer service..............and so on.
However, if you feel the game will trend towards AWESOME (Read: successfully), then perhaps your reason might be:
1. They will continue to add innovative combat and PvP that keeps the game interesting.
I know some people have already made up their mind. That's ok. But if you were to tell me, or suggest, in your opinion, what it is that makes a newly started MMO become successful or a failure over time,...THIS information would really be valuable.

#2. No testing prior to patching results in more things being broken in each patch than is actually fixed.
#3. After being out for nearly a month they still have yet to deliver on several aspects of the game that were promised. (Siege battles, DX10, fun and balanced PvP, crafting...)
I could list a few more, but you only asked for three.
I'm gonna have to vote Fail. Played to 80 + a week after that and there was simply nothing to do. Sure I was one of the earlier level 80s on the server but everything me and the other 80s tried to do (dungeon running, crafting, hell we even got a PvP minigame going) we ended up disappointed. It also had so many fundamental flaws I'm sure most people here have heard of already.
There are quite alot of reasons why this game will fail. I name just few.
1) The ongoing problems that followed launch and lead to lack of support and comunications between players and devs. No it wont get better
2) Devs have ignored players when rasing problems. And we are not talking small problems
3) BIg chunk of players will not reniew their account. Call in the buddy key rescue team - paying nothing. And then - lest see who many % of orginal subscripers are still playing.
Alot of the class realted issues with AOC is just because there simly ISNT enough variety bettwen classes of same catatgores. And omg - do the need to work monts and months of changing and balancing things.
Those combined with new releases on the horizon is what will make this game fail by MMORPG standards. If there wasn't any new releases on the horizon, I think Funcom would have enough time to make the game appeal to a large enough playerbase and actually keep them by the time a new MMORPG is released.
MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW
Currently Playing: WAR Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.
