PvP consequences – the fugitive system
No longer will evil misdeeds go unpunished. Of course, Hyboria is ruthless and barbaric so don’t expect anyone to deal out justice just because someone smacks you about with a very heavy axe, but some justice is actually now being introduced to the world.
This is where the fugitive system comes in, presented in a set of colors defining your fugitive status – from blue to orange and eventually the deadly red.
Everyone is by default classified as “blue”, but your actions as a player killer will affect your fugitive rating. If you kill someone way under your level, you will notice that you will very quickly move to red. So will actions such as killing someone repeatedly, or other general unfairness. The more serious the crime, the quicker you rise in fugitive.
Obtaining red status will be quite painful to you. This means that other players can kill you without rising in fugitive level, and if they manage to kill you while you have red fugitive you will actually drop one of your better items and gold that they can loot!
Of course, turning red will be a double-edged sword. Sure, it will get you a lot of attention and many will probably see you as a danger to be avoided. But at the same time, people will hunt you down for your items and your gold so be very, very careful!
Am I the only one that see's a system like this means epic fail?
First, what if a guild is at war with another guild? Are we not suppose to be able to kill anyone and everyone from that guild when we see them? I dunno about anyone else and how they play, but when a KOS status has been given to an enemy guild - it means anyone...anyone from the KOS guild is a target. So will this new fugitive system mess up the players chances to war with other guilds? Or are we now being force fed how to conduct our own wars of who we fight and when we fight?
I have played many FFA PvP games and to me this kind of smacks in the face of what FFA PvP is all about. It also means we'll have less choices on how we players decide to conduct a war against another guild.
Another flaw to this system I see is the fact that if you go red you'll stand the chance to drop something. Hello! Funcom your game mechanics in regard to gear completely sucks as it is now. If a player drops their primary weapon...where do you suppose they'll get a new one when the current loot system is one of the worst ever seen in an MMORPG. You've locked all the good weapons in the forms of quest drops. Quest that can be an only done once. So if a player goes red and drops their primary weapon, based on your new system, where are they suppose to get a new weapon? Until Funcom introduces a much better and robust loot system and drop rate I cannot see this new system working. I think it will drive players away from the FFA PvP servers because this consequences system, if implemented under the current loot system doesn't allow for players to get another decent weapon.
I have played in games with FFA PvP rule sets that allowed for player looting. Asheron's Call Darktide was like this. You could drop items when killed. Oh and in that game you dropped whether you were flagged a fugitive or not...and you could be stripped clean. So I am all for player looting...as long as there is the option to get replacement items, weapons and armor. As it currently stands in Age of Conan this is not viable. In fact AoC's itemization of MOB's blows chunks...one ofhe worst I have come across in a game to date.
Image above is of a level 50 sword found in Tortage.
Just one example of Aoc's lousy loot system.
If however, Funcom does introduce a better loot system then I see no problem with loot dropping off players. Until then, this is a bad, bad ideal and I think a vast majority of players on the FFA PvP servers will agree with me.
I am all for some kind of anti-griefing system to be put in place...but this system they have come up with will hurt this game and take away part of the challenge we face as we wok our way up in level on a FFA PvP server- in my opinion.

Equipment type available means that your class can not use this weapon type until the level stated. This confused me as well when I started out playing.

You are missing the point. It is a level 50 sword in a place that only goes to level 20(or a little past). Also see those damage stats. Well after you leave Tortage...it doesn't get much better from randomly dropped loot. Quest items give you the best stats and random drops are just pure junk.
Sounds bit like Lineage 2's system.. you pk too much and peeps will come and kill you until you got nothing on.. ah, the good ol days..
Awwwww, c'mon now!
FFA-PVP fans of all stripes have been clamoring for looting as a death penalty!
It just makes me laugh to no end that the looting is not of the helpless sheep!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The "wolves" shall now commence to bleat!
Mind you, they DO need to make exceptions for guildwars in the scheme.
But for those who specialize in killing the weak "because they can"?
Muha...Muha... MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!
already a thread here http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/185262
its really anoying how everyone assume FC are not going to do the obvious things to make it balanced. I can understand all the self claimed hardcore crowd of lowbie gankers QQing (hilarious btw), but people crying imbalance already need to try it out first! you assume way to much.
anyhow I love the system. and will probably have at least one red character just for the arenaline rush, danger, risk and genral feeling of being a criminal and hunted down. and it means I'm going to get 1 shotted by higher levels alot less [when blue].
Dear Game Developers,
Nerf Rock.
Paper is fine though.

Scissors.
You guys are missing the point. I can take my PoM out with no armor, no weapons, drop all my items into a bank, all my monies and then go out and grief until the sun comes up. I'll drop nothing if I am killed and a level 80 PoM can pwn a lot of people their level - imagine the havok a level 80 PoM would wrought upon KP or Conall Valley. Funcoms consequences are moot at that point dontcha thunk?!
There is a couple of better systems they could use. The one they are considering makes it look like Funcom didn't think it through much now does it.
Thats a very good point, we will soon just see naked 80s running around ganking people... as opposed to ones with clothes on.
So next time we get ganked the last thing we will see is a pair of boobies.
O_o o_O

That sword has never has been a lvl 50 item, and never will.. The lvl 50 on the sword, only means you can't equip that kind of weapons, before you hit lvl 50 and get the ability to equip it.
a lot of stuff is different in aoc, not everything you learned from outher games can convert difrectly into this game,. But a lot of stuff is the same though (like quility colors) but im sure you get into that stuff fast enough, if not already
So then... The "Pro-PKers" will end up standing around naked all the time and unable to carry anything for fear they may be killed and looted?
That's cool!
I am also well aware that the classes favored by PKers will also CHANGE over time and may NOT be so enjoyable WITHOUT gear to boost their ADJUSTED powers to ASSIST in the PKness. At which point they are demoted to the status of NAKED SHEEP!.
Bring on the naked PKers!
Now, exactly what point are we missing here?
This can happen now, with armour on. I fail to see what you are trying to get across, not sure you know yourself. Also I would like to hear about the 'better' systems.

Can't help it that you fail to see the point. This is good.

The good part of this sytsem is it will definately cut down on the wanabe pkers. What it will not do is cut down on griefing and pk'ing of lower weaker players by an experienced pker. Any good pker with half a brain will still be able to kill at will with next to no reprecussions. Better than nothing? Sure thing.

Why have armor on if you're just going to drop it. Why put my ideal out there for Funcom to make use of? Will they pay me for my game machenic design?
Look there are systems they can use...better consequences and penalties. This system they are thinking of putting in place will fail. None of you have even addressed the other points I brought up. Do you not think they matter?

If its happens now and it will happen when the system is in place ...... thats kind of the point right? You need a better system not a system that already been used and is known to have loop holes.

But I dont see it happening now. Perhaps this is a failing of some servers I dont know, I play only on pvp (I don't see any other way to play this game tbh). I simply don't see hordes of 80's ganking grey players.
As for the point about gear well I have always been an advocate of a pvp game being level free and most deffinately not gear or stat dependant. If we are going to have levels then (purely on a pvp level) they should add diversity and utility to a char, not some kind of manufactured fake skill.
I would also like to see more detail on the scheme, such as if this ganking level thing has some kind of degredation and if so how is it implemented, over time or deaths? Also will they be bringing in some way of declaring wars inter-guilds so prevent an undeserved status. There is no perfect system for pvp when the basics of the game imo dont lend themselves but this one doesn't seem so bad imo.

Just relax, wait until you tried the system. A guildwar sounds fun to me, extra xp when you kill members of the opposite side and so on.
Oh, and the level 50 drop in Tortage is a bugg, it have been fixed in a patch.
If gankers who kills players for no reason who have lower levels will lose stuff, fine by me. PvP should be about skills not griefing noobs. And nude gankers will soon stop, you are a lot worse naked and easy to spot for everyone else.
As for replacement weapons... dropped weapons can be bought in the market (or found by killing bosses or fugitives), good drops is at least as good as quest rewards. And the crafted ones with gems is suppose to be as good (might need some balancing yet though, but this isn't coming out so soon anyways.
So they had a patch since last night?
I think this is a quite simple case of "stop trolling" or perhaps "Nobody is forcing you to play" and why not "A game cant satisfy everyone when it could possibly have 500.000 players." now I know Aoc doesnt have half a million players at the moment but it very well could some day.
I for one love the system, this means that the gankers have to find some other way of satisfying their low self esteem and need to feel powerful, wich I think is the only reason gankers exist. Offcourse no ganker worth his hatred would ever admit to this and that just strengthens my suspicion.
Just a question, are you in fact a game programmer that have a game system created that is better than what funcom uses? If not... how can they steal it? No gamingcompany I ever heard of payed people for just an idea, they want to see a finished product before there is any talk about payment.
So, I wonder just like the rest here, what is your utopia? Why shouldnt the gankers be punished with dropping items? I dont see why lowbies should. they have a hard time enough just getting good gear, having to drop it all the time would lead to chaos and loss of pretty much every player there is that havent reached max level and überlegendary gear of much leetness.
I've played pretty much every mmorpg there is (except all the free ones that are just worthless and all look like Lineage 2 anyway.) World of Warcraft currently have one of the better pvp systems when it comes to ganking, you dont loose anything but the time it takes to run back to your corpse, but when you relogg your main to get rid of the corpse camper it would just feel better to see him drop all his money or that weapon he's been grinding battleground so hard to get, that would make gankers think twice or maybe stick to more "fair" pvp and attack people that at least has a chance.
"But then whats the point of ganking?" what was the point to begin with? other than having low self esteem and the need to feel powerful in a game where the character isnt even remotely like oneself, except the bottled up anger that is.
If a guild is at war with another guild, I look at it like this. When a guildwar is going, you dont go killing the children and hope the rest will die of old age. I for one would try to strike at the people actually capable of handling a sword, or an axe, or a spear, or whatever... I'm not sure I'd feel all that powerfull with a killcount of 80 level 10 players when someone else have killed 10 level 80, but I guess thats just me.
To sum it up. Yay for this system and if the last thing I see before I die is a pair of boobs, that would maybe cool my anger a little bit before I log my main and hope he/she forgot to bank his/her money and drop some gold for me. Finally the lowbies can get some revenge that actually can hurt.
Now then, flame on...
An interesting idea that, from my point of view, may be a good idea in the general sense.
However the Devil is in the details and I seriously doubt this will play out as described. How exactly are they tagging people? If this system is not exploted in like 5 different ways as soon as it comes out I will surprised. Especially since Fcunsom attention to detail has not impressed me so far.
Basically in real life there is a reason things like this are adjucated in a court of law with lawyers representing both sides. Good luck having an algorithm take care of this stuff. That Funcom is even considering this is ringing alarm bells in my head. I hope it works but I really really doubt it will.
For this to be the next gen MMORPG, the suggested ruleset is same as a 10 year old game called UO! To make it even better they should add your fugitive status will keeps you from entering certain cities and you can only enter evil cities to trade and bank. I played UO and yes I have an AOC account.
The level 50 item deal isn't a bug, though it should just say "Cannot Equip", rather than display the level the class will actually be able to equip it. It isn't difficult to understand, it says level 50 for a Priest or another class that that gains the ability to use swords later on, but probably says level 1 for a Guardian.
I would love to have the old UO ruleset, but I think it won't be as easily accepted by the younger MMO crowd.
And for the 3rd time in this thread, there are no level 50 items in Tortage. Each character class gets access to the different weapon types at different levels, hence the "Equipment type available" tag.
heh and how long was it before trammel was implemented. Casual player sdo not belong on a open PK server bottom line. They think they want open PvP until they get ganked a few times then they run to a GM crying their little eyes out cause the big bad PKer took their shiny new sword. Sorry kiddies but Turbine did it right with MPvP, still get the fun of player vs player without all the BS that goes with open PvP.
I miss DAoC

Yes, I surely fail to see your point. Do you see mine?
I am well aware of how these things work out. PKers PK, Devs install countermeasures to "hamper" asshattery, PKers evade, more countermeasures ensue... Ad nauseum.
I just find their first idea to be soooo amusing... Making prey of the PKers (who not quite uncoincidentally tend to want looting anyway). Sure, some will love it, but the amusement usually wears thin sooner or later.
Now, the REAL Pros will face up to it as a challenge and get my respect.
The little wannabes get none. They are the ones who whine hardest on the forums.
And... Um... As it stands, there is nothing keeping you from taking your POM to a lowbie area and having a bloodbath... So just what IS your point again?
Make no mistake about it, I have no expectation that FCs strategem will be the final measure in the battle, just a starting point.

You speak of PK'ing and ganking as if that is PVP... I dont agree even in the slightest. Sure one could interpret it very strictly and say it really is "Player VS Player" but at the same time... max level legendary epic hero of much leetness vs L10 noob that havent played before... thats not really PVP now is it? The noob havent got and will never have a chance so its more like stomping on ants, while that can be a good thing sometimes to get rid of aggravation its still a complete waste of time and utterly pointless since aggravation coming from a game is, to me, a sign of weakness. Those people need to learn the difference between the game and the real world.
Now I'm all for PVP, but when the victim doesnt stand a chance, I refuse to call it pvp, then its just cowardice. I've been ganked by people 40 levels higher than me in WoW while I had 2-3 mobs on me, and still they brag about the kill... whats there to brag about? Maybe I should start braging every time a swat a fly, would that make me cool? I've had my ass handed to me by a Ganker in Lineage 2 ages ago, I respected him. He was about the same level as me and his name was burning red. I nearly killed him but he walked away the winner. Thats PVP. no matter what color your name is, if the opposing force(s) cant even put up a fight, you are just wasting your own and everyone elses time.
So kids, learn the difference between PVP and ganking.
