LOTRO was as close to perfect of a launch as we'll ever see I'm afraid. It was nearly flawless.
This simply isnt true at all ... LotR had exactly the same problems you and others complain about when talking about AoC right now.
Start was polished but after that ...
It was a pain to level when you got above 38 since they didnt't had enough quests ready
Most high level quests where labeled wrong
Itemization was (and still is) poor
It had a meaningless Tradeskill system
No housing in
I could go on ...
Did I enjoyed it ... yes and I enjoy AoC
LotRO had as close to a flawless launch as we'll get in some time. I was there since Alpha and it ran better than most MMOs do months after launch.
As for the points you've highlighted, those are not the points again AoC. The points against AoC was the absolutely abysmal performance the game had up until the miracle patch right before launch, followed by the general poor quality of content after you leave Tortage, the broken city building system, the Battle Keep system that isn't even implemented, lack of spell weaving, lack of drunken brawling, all major systems that were promised that never got delivered. LotRO delivered all their promises.
LOTRO was a near flawless launch. The engine ran great, no real crashing issues, a decent amount of content for the average player, I could go on. So, I am saying I agree with the close to flawless launch comments for this game. LOTRO clearly had the best launch (stability, ease of acces, etc) in recent MMO history, and yes, it was better than the WOW launch.
AOC has had an OK launch from that standpoint. It has not been outstanding but it has been good enough. The game is fun and I am not really clear on those who say there is a lack of content after 20th. That is not true. The conent is light in the mid to upper 40s and spotty as you go up but there is a commitment to fill that void. Like all MMOs some quests are typical kill X of this or Fed Ex runs but there are some great ones too that are interesting and diverse. For a while I was carrying this accursed scroll around and had to trapse all over the world to get rid of it. The quest line was well written and every once in a while undead would appear out of nowhere and attack me. This happened until I found a way to rid myself of it . There are many quests of that quality.
This game will be a success and unlike the jaded commentors on this forum the "average gamer" will enjoy the game well enough provided their system can handle it. Plus, I love some of the things they are implementing for the game (as recently announced).
im sure ill come off as a "fanboy" which is fine cause i am a fan of the game. You admit you are a fanboi. Atleast you are honest. the purpose of my post is to point out that AOC has had one of the most successful launches in the history of mmo's.
It depends how you define successful. If it is boxes sold, I suppose that is one definition. But we aren't even past the free 30 days so I think it's a bit premature to sound the victory horn.
But for analogy sake, suppose where you live there are only 5 single women. You've dated all five and some were okay. Now a really beautiful girl moves into town. Everyone wants to date her because she's good looking and the new girl in town. And the fact that this new girl is topless, well, lot of guys will give her the benefit of the doubt personality wise...atleast until they take her for a test drive. In a nutshell....boxes sold says more about boredom and desire for something new than it does about AOC. The fact that AOC is pretty is distracting, but ulitmately pretty is not enough.
yes there are issues and what not but overall the game is doing great.
The game is not doing great. They advertised on their box certain features would be ingame. Those features are not in. We have no ETA when they will be in. As for other issues, there are several threads in the official tech forums, one of them in particular with over a 1000 posts with regards to ATI card problems. Lot of Nvidia people also having issues. Not everyone who has a problem will visit forums. Some will just quit, so the numbers could be much higher.
I see posts where ppl are saying this game isnt gonna last blah blah its gonna become a f2p blah blah. no game has ever seen this much success and failed that bad.
Again, I disagree with your definition of success. To me, calling the game a success is 6 months to 1 year away.
Im sure there is gonna be some buyers remorse but not enough to put a dent into the overall success of this game. Now im not saying this game is gonna be the "wow killer" as that was never the purpose of it. Even funcom stated this game isnt for everyone.
No game is for everyone. Statement of the obvious.
This game will join the ranks of some of the other very successful mmos out there,
Only one MMO is doing great. The others are ok or meh. Which is why we are like pirahna when what sounds like a good game launches.
so to all the haters deal with it and move on. Oh and if anyone is considering buying this game and is discouraged by all the hate posts on this site dont be. There is less positive posts cause those people are in game rather than on here. ok back to AOC for me
You disprove your own hypothesis. You are a fanboi yet here you are. Personally I think with all the negativity something must have gone terribly wrong with the game, because contrary to what some may think, most people want to find a good game and have fun. So to turn all that anticipation and longing into post after post after post of people finding many faults with the game, it must fail miserably.
Also, there is this rumor that forum posts do not reflect actual sentiment. Wrong. This is a lie told by someone who is giving their opinion only. My opinion is most people probably don't care to post one way or the other. For every positive and every negative opinion there are probably 100 people with same opinion. But forums are reflective of the community, minus the haters and the fanbois of which you are one. Thanks for admiting that up front.
I agree with the op. Even tho ofcourse this is a forum for people to share their opinion, the haters here are beeing quite ridicilous. Can only repeat myselfe, don't like it? Gtfo and move on with whatever suits you more.

I would'nt worry too much, most of the hate posted on the Web is here on Mmorpg.com, the sensible people are actually playing the game. The people that matter are intelligent enough not to take any notice of some of the crap posted here .
That being said there are still alot of well balanced people posting alot of good stuff here too ,so its not all bad .
I have stopped logging in before there is nothing left for me to do but mindlessly grind my way up to 80. Once I do hit 80, there will be nothing left for me to do other than gank lowbies. I don't even want to start an alt since i'm sick of Tortage. It was great the first time around and is easily the most polished part of the game but you can only go through it so many times without getting sick of it.

Now I havent read most reviews, but I've read some. The IGN one is actually one of the lower ones with 7.8 in score and it's the only review I've read where the reviewer has actually gotten lvl50+. I've read many reviews where the only thing they wrote about was Tortage. But I've stopped trusting reviews anyway. Games getting 9+ without being superb games and even 10/10 which shouldnt be given to any game its just for measure how close to perfect you came.

It'll either do well and still be around in a few years (maybe with lots of features that haven't even been thought of or announced yet - games do develop, after all) or it won't.
Check the other forums - there isn't a game on this site that doesn't have some people slamming it (check out the SWG Vets forum for some real game-hate!!). People still playing them though.
Always amuses me how seriously people take these forums

Get 25,000 AO paid customers, 150,000-200,000 AoC concurrent subscribers, add another 100,000+ with A Secret World and Funcom will have 250,000-350,000 concurrent subscribers paying $15 a month. That is $3,750,000 a month for a company with 250 employees. Easy money for any future projects. Only problem is, these games are pushing $100 million to make now days. IMHO, they have to find a way to either bring cost down without outsourcing everything to cheap labor countries. Without misleading and outright b.s.ing your public of what is in the game just to sell boxes, they need lower costs so they don't need 3 years to recoup development costs.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

lol... Ah, the popular "professional" critics.. I never knew they were to be trusted.. Especially since they are all "offiicially BIASED hype machines that rate based on which companies actually put ADVERTISEMENTS in their publications..
Yeah, umm.. no, I don't think anyone cares what they think, they are just good for pictures and spec information before the game arrives.. :-)

Did you know that aluminum hats are cheaper than tin foil ones? USA Today and Sci Fi were both bought out by Funcom. I mean seriously, what the hell man.
AoC haters in beta: "The game is a failure, they will never fix the RAM leak in time"
FC: "Removes debugger and it goes away"
AOCH response: "Yeah, but the frames are crap on my system. I don't care if they announced DX10 graphics 3 years ago, it still runs crappy on my throwaway system with 56K of RAM.
Issue: peoeple being too dumb to read system specs. If a game announces DX10, then expect to run Crysis. Unless you get signigficantly better frames in Crysis than AoC with the same details, res, and features turned on, then you do not have a viable argument here.
AOCH: "The game will not sell, it runs too choppy"
FC: "Sells 700K copies on day one and outsells GTAIV in Europe"
AOCH: "Yeah, but there is some way to break down the numbers. This is not how many copies people are currently playing.
Issue: No game ever bases their figures off of copies in the home. There is no way to get this type of figure without government help. The numbers reported are just as legit as GTAIV's day 1 world wide 2 million, and as legit as Blizzard's 10 million.
AOCH: "Yeah, but the game still has bugs.
FC: "Releases patches every 3 days with major fixes."
Issue: MMOS are not about launch. They are about support. If they can keep even a fraction of this pace going though July, the game will be perfect.
AOCH: "Yeah, but the game should have been perfect at launch, like WOW.
Issue" WOW was not perfect at launch. No MMO Was. As far as bugs at launch, AoC was smoother than WOW and TBC and pretty much any game out there. Some say LOTRO beats it, and that's about it unless you either exaggerate the AOC bugs or downplay those of Blizzard's launches. The reason you have to compare launch to launch NOT 2004 to 2008 is money. MMOS do not make a dime until launch.
AOCH: " Yeah, but AOC got a bad review at IGN. I trust IGN because they sell subscriptions instead of advertisements.
Issue: Yeah, there is some skew in the market, but saying that USA today and Warcry are on the same payroll is ludicrous. The fact of the matter is that IGN is one of very few lowballs out there, while everybody else is generally giving AOC 80% and up.
AOCH: "Yeah, but AOC is not going to retain these numbers"
Issue: Only time will tell. I've seen a few pundits project 60% retention, 90% retention, and 10% retention. If this any indication, you can't trust ANY projections. You just have to roll with the facts. But, if we use the patching schedule as a litmus test, I am willing to state with confidence that AOC will remain successful until WAR or WOTLK come out.
TLDR/Summary:
The AOC Haters are just making themselves look bad. By all measures of a successful MMO, AOC is a massive success: pathcing, new features, playability, sales, popullarity, and reviews, to name a few. You haters need to get a life and take a walk. AOC is a success.

Yep I totally I agree, number of subscribers at launch were also pretty high too I believe about a week ago they were able to confirm subscriptions are well over 400k, but they are also estimating about 1 million active subscriptions now.
the people ingame have been very positive. it's very rare to see complaints. the only place i've seen complaints have been from the usual vocal minority on online forums that pop up with each new game release. you know, the crowd that just whines endlessly about how new game X doesn't match up to first played MMO Y. then they feel the need to whine for months straight about how they were "ripped off $50" by the gaming company. happens with every game. it makes this place an unreadable cesspool most of the time since there are constantly bitter people complaining about how "UO was the greatest lawlz" or "OMG SONY MESSED UP SWG" and just bashing anything new that comes around because it doesn't "compare".
AOC servers have tons of people on them and people are having fun.

For me....I have to strongly disagree with the OP's comment explaining away AOC as a game thats not for everyone. THE GAME has features that don't work ,are incomplete, unfinished, poorly implemented and frankly is not what was marketed to the public. CRAFTING......is a pile of useless code.....PVP...is nothing but a gankfeast with zero purpose of focus.....CITY BUILDING is broken. What players were thrown into was a world of countless quests and pve grinding to some promised land of battle keep warfare that no person have ever seen work in the actual game.I could continue on and on but if you don't get my point after the above..it's because you don't want to.
Do I wish the game was like this ? Heck no.I am deeply disappointed.I refuse to play in a game that clearly is in early beta testing phase. Maybe in 3 monthe..or 6 months...or never.....will I consider returning.
Ok, pretty much everyone that knows me, knows I am a DAoC / WAR fan and have debated which is better, WAR or AoC. At this time however, I would like to point out that the only reason I purchased AoC is so I can back up my findings with real time experience. The game hasn't even been out for a month yet and I've probably logged in atleast 200 hours. I've played a Necromancer, Tempest of Set and now my main is a Guardian. I've tried every avenue of the game possible to get a better overall view of what the game encompasses. Within the first month, from day one, these were my findings... The game was not complete. Aside from Tortage, the zones, quests and gameplay mechanics were either not implemented, broken or bugged. Crafting was not working as intended and still isn't as socketed items still crash the game. Alchemy can't proceed past tier one and gemcutting sometimes requires you to log out of the game after every crafting session so your quest updates. Over the last 3-4 weeks, they have definately fixed a lot of issues. There is however zone-wide crashes from time to time still, which hopefully gets fixed. Crafting still isn't working and some zones are still empty. PvP fugitive system, which should have been implemented at launch, still wasn't implemented as of yesterday and I don't know if it made yesterday's patch. AoC isn't the worst launch in history, in fact it's been somewhat on par with the current gaming industries standards, which just happens to be horse doo doo at the moment. However, AoC didn't go out of their way to raise the bar and provide a quality game from launch, which it most certainly is not, or was not. Until they open up sieging and the border kingdoms or double the amount of PvE content, this game is not something to brag about. I'm sorry, but boobs, decapatations and swearing NPCs don't make a game great. Instancing is another story and everyone has their likes and dislikes concerning that aspect. Despite being a WAR fan, I still put a lot of time into playing AoC to the fullest extent. I wanted to see if everything fans were hyped about prelaunch was true. Well, if AoC had launched as described by rabid fanbois, sure, it would have been a great game. However, thats not the case and false advertisements are precisely the reason why you can't judge a game's initial sales as a success. If AoC maintains it's numbers after the initial cancels, then it can be considered a success. If it drops in numbers, then no, Funcom let too many people down and I would not deem it as a success.
I think this is a fair post. I am enjoying incomplete AoC, but also look forward to WAR, but also doubt it will be as good. AoC may be incomplete as its missing some promised content, and has some bugs. But it is an MMO. WAR will be the same story, pherhaps even worse we shall have to see. Many people will whine when WAR comes out about bugs and missing content also. And I doubt they'll put as much work as FC is currently putting into AoC to fix it (2 patches a week).
If WAR launches as described by rabid fanbois, sure it will be a good game. but anyone experienced knows games never live up to the hype.
AoC fans now its released will admit the game is not perfect, while WAR fans seem to still believe thats its impossible for WAR to not be perfect on release.

and i strongly disagree with you. basically ive played A LOT of mmos dating back to everquest and none of them have reached 10% of the fun i have had. this game caters to what i look for in a game and what it does well at at the moment is what ive been looking forward to which is a beautiful world great combat abd lots of blood and gore. the stuff that you mentioned i have noticed some issues with but im not concerned as they are not as drastic as you seem to believe.
"This game is a success!!! WHY? Because I play it! And I will be damned if I play a game that people try to make look like a loser! I ONLY play the best games.. And any game that I play HAS to be the best eva! Because I play it! So any game I play is a success because I said SO! So all you haters can stfu, because the numbers and stats I post from last month make me look right and you look wrong! Any other game is an epic FAIL compared to the games I play, because I play them! So everyone should play all the games I play or I will rip your forums open and scream EPIC FAIL in every thread possible, because you ALL should be playing the games I play because they are ubah success stories! And I'm part of the cool crowd and you aren't soo.. YEAAA!"
Do not believe trolling but als do not believe fanboism. They are equal stupid and equal lack intelligence, creativity and IQ to post normally.
Here are the real facts if you want to know it.
The 8,9 and 10 ratings are from sites who only experienced tortage and not beyond. In my opinion, i would give tortage an 8. So yes, there reviews are accurate.
The ratings below 8 like IGN, pcgamer and the rest are already beyond tortage and are giving less credit to FC.
The ratings at 6 and 7 are sites who are far into age of conan and now see that there is allot of content lacking at 40/50+. The fact here is that allot of conent is missing after you leave age of conan.
Those tortage reviews simply do not count, if you remove those sites that only experienced tortage. The highest review you may see is a 7.8/8- The fact is, age of conan not only endgame is lacking and broken, but even before the endgame, the journey i would say, isn't completed. Tortage is completed, the rest isn't.
Tortage may be fine but that's not what age of conan is about. If after tortage the content is missing and not like the usual mmo that is missing a bit and just has some bugs , age of conan is much worser and is very similiar to vanguard with content missing.
It's a shame but the sad truth. There is no single argument against this since i have seen it and the rest who is know at these contents experience the same as me. No fanboy has an answer against this, unless you listen to the low dominator excuses that offer nothing else then bandwitch space.

Honestly, most intelligent people ignore the reviews that these sites give out, especially if they are the sites that have advertisements on them. Many of these reviews are extremely generous.
Really. Some of these numbers are laughably high. You should be critical of the game. AoC is a good game. but I highly doubt its so great to warrant it a 94% (LOL) from the information gathered on these forums. Give me a break. Pro reviews are a hunk of bs.
If you want real reviews, you have to read what the PLAYERS are stating, and the players, I mean the unbiased ones; disregard haters/fanbois.
assumption is the mother of all !@#$ups I am not in the starting area I am lvl 45 and enjoying the game more now than at the beginning
FYI My game experience took a nose dive in the mid to late 50s. Its a very common experience. First 50 levels good; after that is starts to sour. Many reasons why.
I will be back, but currently the game needs a lot more work.
Yeah, about a successful as the Iraq war. Great for the first 20 levels, the rest = total shit! mwhaha fear my logic PWND
This is an asinine comment. Perhaps you should be fighting the war since you seem to "PWN" at everything. Seriously if you don't like the game move on leave everyone else to their own. Hopefully Darwin's law will take care of the above. . .

Check the other forums - there isn't a game on this site that doesn't have some people slamming it (check out the SWG Vets forum for some real game-hate!!). People still playing them though.
Always amuses me how seriously people take these forums

Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what size my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

Current MMO: Aion

Played: Planetside, SWG, EQ, EQ2, L2, WoW, RFO, KAL, MxO, Voyage, RO,Vanguard,Tabula Rasa, Horizons, CoH/CoV,, Lotro, FFXI
First MMO: Everquest (Tunare Server, Ronin/Tide Guild)
the people ingame have been very positive. it's very rare to see complaints. the only place i've seen complaints have been from the usual vocal minority on online forums that pop up with each new game release. you know, the crowd that just whines endlessly about how new game X doesn't match up to first played MMO Y. then they feel the need to whine for months straight about how they were "ripped off $50" by the gaming company. happens with every game. it makes this place an unreadable cesspool most of the time since there are constantly bitter people complaining about how "UO was the greatest lawlz" or "OMG SONY MESSED UP SWG" and just bashing anything new that comes around because it doesn't "compare".
Dear Game Developers,

Paper is fine though.

and i strongly disagree with you. basically ive played A LOT of mmos dating back to everquest and none of them have reached 10% of the fun i have had. this game caters to what i look for in a game and what it does well at at the moment is what ive been looking forward to which is a beautiful world great combat abd lots of blood and gore. the stuff that you mentioned i have noticed some issues with but im not concerned as they are not as drastic as you seem to believe.
A post in the eyes of an mmorpg.com member:
YEAAA!"
Conclusion?
lol...

Who takes "professional" reviews seriously?
This is an asinine comment. Perhaps you should be fighting the war since you seem to "PWN" at everything. Seriously if you don't like the game move on leave everyone else to their own. Hopefully Darwin's law will take care of the above. . .
