New King of the Hill of MMORPGs?

guys WOW is the king of the hill because is made for EVERYBOBY, even a congresswomen plays it FFS. At first look that is not bad, but the features in the game for mmorpg player that played games like AOC, Ultima Online, EVE Online, Anarchy Online, SWG, are CRAPSTASTIC!!!

The game is very polished, copied some of the good features from old mmorpg, made them simple, somewhat better in some cases, filled the game with great pve content in general, and story, and filled it with no consequence for your actions, with incredible stupid pvp, and grind raids and tiers, so they will have your cashy each month for some crappy addon that bassicly does the same. And it does miracles, because it was done very well, polished, and great fuking marketing ala Blizzard.

No what u need to ask you what u want? A streamline very well made, polished mmorpg, with 12309823 gazilions of subscribers, and simple features and no risc - rewards as WOW, OR

You want a game that moves to next generation, by not copying the others, or wanting to be the next WOW. by trying to move on, by coming with great features on pve and pvp, and with 1-2 mil subscribers world wide, cause after all a good mmorpg will not be good for everybody, because if you make it like WOW, from a mmorpg veteran, and creativity stand point U WILL FAIl, but will milk the cow...for ever...Games like EVE Online, DAOC(in the old days), SWG(old days, Ultima Online and Asherson Call, features that WOW first mmorpg times, woudnt believe they exists, and how nice they were...

MMORPG Industry instead of evolving at the features, in the last 10 years, just evolve in graphics, and dumb down the gameplay, and most of the features started to dissapeared, so they can get cash from any JOE out there, so it all about the cashy.

I still hope that WAR will do well, but only time will tell, if not my hope goes to small developer on games like Jumpgate, Spellborn and others, that are not promoted every fuking day, like that craptastic beta AGE OF Conan, that is on every site, every day, and the game suffers badly in reality. MMORPG ? Where Age of Instanced Empty Content and Broken Features.

IT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY FOR THEM...

    RANT OFF :))

For instance, I seriously want a fantasy sandbox MMO with permadeath (the real kind) and no spawning, and I want a sandbox social simulator MMO with an economy (not just a 3d chat room).
Yes, you can kill me now.
But my specific taste in games is not the point. The point is, I'm not alone. There are millions of us who just don't play MMORPG's at all because we think the whole genre stinks. In other words, when games start being made for people who don't enjoy WoW, some of these will sooner or later become hugely successful in their own right, and little by little, the old WoW tyrant will be forced into the sidelines. That's how gaming has always progressed (when it progressed). Not because a killer game entered the scene to slay the older killer game, but because the definition of gaming was transformed in the interim (in this case MMO's).

I highly doubt there are millions of you. Certainly these "millions" of you never go to play the sandbox games of UO or Eve.

That's because none of those games are up to my standards. I demand actual permadeath, for example.

blizzards top secret MMO has a shot.  warhammer has a shot (all depends on clean gold launch).

also there is a top secret mmo being created by http://www.38studios.com - that might be good, no one knows.

I tried the trial once, and hated it.  The graphics are too cartoon-like.  I couldn't get past that.  I love LOTRO and loved SWG.  I would still play SWG if my friends hadn't all bailed out on me.   I'm looking forward to looking at Warhammer.   But I don't get the attraction of WoW.   Too kiddy-like.

Nothing can beat WOW now or in the near future in my opinion.  Maybe Blizzard's new mmo currently in development will top WOW.  Hard to say, but even they might not be able to repeat their success.  I think there is a good likelyhood though if they are too be beaten it will be by their own game.

I think Lineage 2 could have done better also if they had catered to a more western approach, atleast for their north american launch.

the only thing that can beat wow is if blizzard decides to make another wow server and make it an F2P server

Its not the game I want to play. End of story.

And why is this relevant to the thread? No one is asking what you like.

The thread is about speculation of when and if WOW will lose its #1 spot in the market. It has NOTHING to do with you.

LOL .. that is not a standard. It is a niche fetish of yours and no game will permadeath will be anywhere close to the success of WOW.

not to forget that the only socializing there is in the game is to stand in an alley with your beer friends uttering "yep, yep, mmmmm hmmmmm" over and over again lol!

I do not want a new king, I want it to be e.g. ~25% of the total MMO players in a MMO of Type A, ~25% in one of Type B, ~25% in one of Type C, and the rest make up the last 25%, so that you can choose a MMO suitable for you and it has enough player base to be attractive, if you are not interested in those, say 3 common types, then the rest 999 games are for you, or don't play MMO.

Monopoly is never anything good. Right now the market is like "WoW or don't play MMO". I know I can always make other choice but the trend is like all other choices are worthless. I know you cannot blame WoW for being too successful but it is just bad.

    MMO played (paid):
    AION
    DragonRaja
    Dungeons & Dragons Online
    Lineage
    Lineage 2
    Tibia
    Ultima Online
    Warhammer Online
    World of Warcraft

    MMO tried:
    Atlantica Online
    Darkfall
    Dead Frontier
    Dungeon Runners
    EverQuest
    Lord of the Rings Online
    Monster Hunter Frontier Online
    Ragnarok Online
    Requiem
    Runes of Magic
    Runescape
    The 4th Coming

and some other Chinese/Korean or beta MMOs

I don't see anybody toppling WoW for a while. It would take a very dedicated effort to pull that off, with attacks from all directions. (Marketing, features, stability, even underhanded attacks like giving guilds bonuses to move over). It would take some kind of genius to come close to toppling WoW.

What I would like to see is something have sustainable viability and unquestioned success. Maybe 1 million players is something good to shoot for. AoC might get there but I really don't think it will sustain it. People are rushing through what little content is available, and I am seeing some mass guild exoduses in the future (back to whatever game they came in from). Time will tell of course.

The only other mmo that has a chance at this point is WAR. And I am judging that merely on hype, but when talking about populations hype is probably the best thing to go on. I think WAR can hit a million before the year is out, what with the holiday release, and the number of going-to-be subscribers. Haven't seen too many complaints about beta either. But I suspect it will have a content problem as well, and the balance could easily turn people away quickly. It's impossible to say. If they deliver it stands a chance.

I'm not going to go into Asian games, I think they already are coming close to WoW with some of their games. I don't know enough about their market though.

But don't look for a new King anytime soon.

lol the next King of The Hill of MMORPGs will be a game that keeps features that will be released in expansion packs a secret.

The WoW situation is becoming ridiculous. For example do we really want Halo dominating the FPS market for years? I don't think that everyone that played WoW when it was first released hated it, but since people only really have one MMORPG with tons of players to play they have gotten pissed off. It's been 4 years we want something new already!!!!

You can't say that civilization don't advance, however, for in every war they kill you in a new way.

At least there would be some socializing unlike some games. . .

Back on topic WoW will not be trumped by anything in store in the foreseeable future.  WoW is an anomaly in the MMO scene.  If they ever figure out how to emulate WoW's success again you will see it happen a lot more in other games.

lol well it is considered one of the best FPSs. I was just using it as an example. Wouldn't everyone be pissed if Halo just dominated the FPS market?

A legit contender for WoW could be the one that BioWare is developing.  Think about all the great RPG games that BioWare makes.  And if they do things right, their MMO could be the next King of the Hill.

True,  Bioware makes great RPGs that have awesome storylines. But the problem with MMORPGs is that they are nothing like single players RPGs. In single player RPGs you're the hero out to save the world, thus the storylines are epic and engaging. In MMORPGs you're the nobody that does quests which people have already done a million times, or you kill monsters for no reason lol. Also most MMORPGs have horrible storylines or some random stuff that is thrown in just to make it possible to have the title MMORPG.

The only game to knock WoW off it's hill would be another game made by Blizzard. Blizzard had unique experience and exposure in Asian, American, and European markets prior to WoW's launch. Add to this a long marketing campaign and simple gameplay and you have a winning formula.

The success of AoC more or less tell us which way the developers are likely to go.

"Success of AoC?" Pass me some of what you're smoking, please. And you mention two weak PvP games as consolation? (UO uses 3rd person perspective which is so 1985; Eve is saturated with vulgar profanity)

Yes, my friend, there ARE millions of us sitting by the sidelines.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
