my opinion its definitely StarCraft. Blizz isnt about to make a MMO that would directly compete with world of warcraft, that would be silly. So whatever MMO theyre likely designing wont be the same genre as WoW is. Starcraft MMO would give sci-fi fans a place to call home without diminishing WoW subscriptions. It would bring in ex-swg players and maybe some AO players as well looking for a new sci-fi MMO. I cant see Blizz going out and making a MMO from scratch. A game like WoW or Starcraft already has a built-in fan base. Something brand new is a huuuuge risk and Blizz isnt known as a risktaker
. Tabula Rasa was the last "Big" sci-fi mmo to come out and it failed miserably. EVE does not appeal to the casual player and you cant get out of your spaceship.
No way they will risk developing a hybrid RTS/MMO. Those games are so niche it would never reach the success of WoW. What they need is something for the 8 million (whatever it is) to migrate too. They don't want to turn them off with something completely different. I REALLY hope it isn't a RTS/MMO hybrid.
If you think about it before WoW RPG was a small niche.
And if you look at total sales without WoW it still is.
So my crazy prediction is that it will be sci fi FPS !
For me it would have to be a starcraft MMO.. or maybe an RTS/MMO/RPG hybrid, you dont play a character you play a faction and you hire/build/train armies to battle other players for ownership of planets, facilities etc all in an RTS game play. /drolling
Blizzard knows WoW is old, and every time a new MMO comes out tons of WoW players turn their backs on it to see if the new game is worth playing. The only problem is no really great game has come around yet.
If they were to make a new game that was good enough to dominate like WoW does, people might transfer over to the new game but they will still be getting the 15 million monthly subscriptions, just spread across more servers. WoW is too old to contrinue to grow for much longer, and they know it. A new game would allow them make room for even more growth, while still having WoW for a safety net incase the new game fails. And it is not as if WoW hasn't made more than enough money to keep the servers up way past 2012 already.
People are looking for something new, it would be smart to give it to them before they find another company that will. And once they are gone and neck deep in a new game, they may not come back.
Every year they have a secret announcement and everyone goes crazy with rumors and hopes of D3, that alone is reason enough to make the game, to give the people what they want. Even though i personally would rather see a WoW2 or a new IP and avoid the whole diablo thing, the people have spoken and from a business perspective, what better way to stay on top. Domination has worked so far, why hold back now. "That's the way we do it, that's how my father did it, and that is how America does it. And it's worked so far."
never!!!! i dont think they will be releasing a new mmo (or saying one) until late 09 or 2010. Right now theyre busy with diablo and starcraft which pretty much will occupy them for the next two years. Esp starcraft is likely to release at 2009 spring, and diablo thereafter
Don't you think Blizzard has update plans for WoW? This is the biggest video game in the history of the world.
They will update the graphics in probably 3 or 4 more years, and keep adding expansions for the next 10 years at least. They don't need another MMO (but an old SWG style sandbox done by blizzard would be freakin awesome!)
They have been talking aobut working on their new "Next-gen mmo" for about 7 months now. Diablo 3 is already said to be single player and multi-player so we know this isn't the new MMO and Starcraft 2 and been around before they said they were working on a new game.
They said in Nov of 07 they haven't even thought about making WoW 5/2 yet. It would have to be something new. Since 90% of the mmo market is fantasy I think they'll make a game with that in mind. But I would love to see D3 as a MMO... sadly it isn't going to happen for a long time... if ever..

WOW 2 or a new ip. Though at the end of the zerg revealed trailer you hear them mention that they are evolving into something much much more. Something to think about perhaps. Either way I am sure we will find out soon enough.
what makes you think that there won't be a diablo MMO? Just because Diablo3 is set like the ones before that doesn't mean Blizzard won't produce it into a MMO. Look at Warcraft 3, RTS, and now a MMO, maybe diablo3 is setup game for a bigger picture. Maybe its Starcraft Ghost or Lost Vikings? Maybe its a entirely different ip and we are going to get smacked in the face. My predictions for WoW are two more Expansions.
I'd be keen to see whatever their next mmo is. WoW cops a lot of fair criticism for its lack of eg. end-game depth, but Blizzard are a solid gaming company that pretty much single-handedly drew in literally millions of players into the mmo market.
The single biggest problem plaguing mmos in recent years has been poor production values. Games are repeatedly released before they're ready and we the consumers are expected to cough up money to buy and play them while they finish the product.
WoW had some nasty server issues at release due to greater than expected demand, but the game itself was a finished product that could be played and enjoyed at release.
They only need to do that again, to succeed. If they keep their easy to get into and low learning curve winning formula, and throw in an innovation or two, they could conceivably re-corner the market.
It could be Starcraft online, they may have said that they will not be making an MMO that is a contenuation of a franchise, but they also said they would not make Diablo 3 any time soon, and kept denying they were making it. So who knows?
I doubt its an MMORTS btw as there are no MMORTS games out there that have done well enough for Blizzard to be able to innovate on, they all suck. It is Blizzard so anything they make is going to have been done before but a lot more polished.
They have the PvE market covered at the moment, perhaps they will aim for the PvP market with their next mmo?
I dont think that Diablo 3 wil be released before late 2010, or 2011. That being said, I see Blizzard releasing a new MMO after 2013. Blizzard announced WoW on September 2001. They launched it 3 years after.

I would think D3 would come out no later than Q4 next year..and probably much sooner.
Hmmm... i think this might end the argument as to what genre it is:
(From Job Listings on Blizzard's Website)
Senior Graphics Programmer - Next-Gen MMO "Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an experienced senior graphics programmer to work on its next-generation massively multiplayer game. The ideal applicant will be proficient in shader programming and have 3D graphics API experience. Animation programming experience Experience with programming with a 3D graphics tool chain Familiarity with3ds Max or Maya Prior 3D development work experience on MMORPG, RPG, and/or RTS games"
Looks like it's an MMORTS to me, or else they wouldn't ask for someone with experience with RTSs.

2001 + 3years = 2004
2008 + 3years = 2011
Not even an announcement + 3years = could be well after 2013
Is that simple enough, or should we start with the basics?

Yes, I guess they know it's going to make money. We've had a lot of hack and slash games too, Baldurs gate, Neverwinter Nights, Devil May Cry. They're all pretty good though.
Baldur's Gate and NWN were not anything near hack and slash. Diablo 2, Titan's Quests, Hell Gate London, Guild Wars, the old arcade game Gauntlet etc....are hack and slash games. Hack and Slash means there is a very minimal story line.

SC MMORPG wont be happening anytime soon... I could see a TPS/FPS, but def not a MMORPG/MMOFPS. There isn't a dedicated audience to SC or scifi crap... Also shooting a gun all the time would get old quickly. Blizzard's next MMORPG maybe a Diablo sequel (like WoW) or superhero/modern game.
Blizzcon's not far away. Maybe they'll have an announcement for us then. I'm not sure though, it depends on how long they've been working on it, if they've even started at all. I highly doubt their new MMO would be SC, WC, or Diablo, as WoW is getting an expansion, SC2 and D3 are in the works. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to work on 2 games in the same universe at the same time. I think it would be pretty cool to see Blizzard go out on a limb and try to make something new, however, whatever MMO they make, I have a feeling will be WoW-esque for the simple fact that WoW has proven itself to be a money maker, and when all is said and done, it's all about money.

i got my money on some type of CoD4 type game, except MMO.
The FPS is quite possibly the biggest genre here in america, and nobody has done it much justice in MMO form yet.
i see blizzards next MMO being something like WWII online mixed with CoD4 gameplay.
