Just information for those interested.
Posted Jul 1st 2008 8:30AM by John Callaham We had a feeling this might happen and now the latest list of the top 10 best selling PC games in the US (via the NPD Group) has confirmed it. The list, which covers the week ending June 21, has the $9.99 Spore Creature Creator as the number one PC "game" (and it's not really a game, its an editor for an upcoming game, Spore). The "game" is the only new entry in the top 10 list this week; the other titles on the list have appeared before and have basically shifted positions on the list. Funcom's MMO Age of Conan continues to sell very well, outselling the Blizzard World of Warcraft juggernaut for the past several weeks.

Proof that Amazon isn't the end-all to video game sales.

I am sure Blizzard could care less. They have 3 of the top ten spots and have been in the top ten every week since WOW released.
Everyone else can only hope to sell so well.
Yep I'm sure Blizzard isn't bothered, unlike some forum readers here
So the only new game on the PC market is selling better than 3 year old games. Is this a surprise?
Funcom said they sold 550K copies during EA and opening weekend. Two days ago they said they had sold 700K. So over the last 5 weeks they ahve sold 150K copies.
That is a much more useful number than looking at top 10 sales charts.
in the past, I commented that NPD does not include digital sales
but that no longer matters because AOC offers digital now too

yes it is selling well, however going by the trend of the XFire users people are not subscribing. And yes I know that all players are not on XFire blah blah blah. However it does show retention trends rather well and AoC is bleeding players faster than sales are bringing new people in, otherwise Xfire numbers would be going up not down steadily. That would scare the hell out of me if I were Funcom, since everyone knows that a MMO survives on subscriptions, not box sales.
I miss DAoC
How is that proof of anything? The NPD data was for the week ending June 21. The game was still in the top ten on Amazon most of that week also.
I miss DAoC
Indeed man... hehehe
I have never, nor would I ever buy a game from Amazon. I buy my games at the store, usually, or online from gamestop, I have never even thought of buying from Amazon. In addition, I don't use Xfire. I personally don't see a use for it as my guild uses vent and team speak. Further more, I spoke with my guild and out of 132 people, only 8 used Xfire.
I think it's borderline retarded to base the state of a game on Xfire. I'm happy AoC is selling well as it's currently my addiction.
6% of the player base would be considered large enough to accurately poll from and 6% of your guild uses xfire. So I fail to see the borderline retarded comment holding much water. It might be a biased sample, there is no way to know, but it is most certainly a valid sample size given the number of users on xfire.
I don't think it's stupid to use xfire. When statistics are created, they are done by taking a sample of the population. Xfire's population, being a sample of AoC's population may be enough to do a statistic.
I've never used xfire myself, never even visited their website until recently and it does show player hours dramatically falling for AoC. Is it representative of the whole population? Possibly. I don't know much about xfire nor the type of players that use it to make that assumption. There might be other reasons why xfire users are playing AoC less.
All that list tells me, is:
Everyone who cries and whines and cruses and flames: "We dun wan't no The sims in our MMORPG thank you!!! Cuz thats LAAAAAMEO", should get a grip and see that people actually want more "simulator" instead of more phantasy elves wither uberswords of doom +14 and PvP.
The last of the Trackers
Well, interesting information, if a bit out of date (6/21 is practically in the last century)
What matters is the long term sub rates, and unless FC chooses to share them we'll always just be guessing at how successful the game really is.

The only problem I have is with that claim of outselling WoW. It isn't, its outselling each seperate version. add WoW battle chest to WoW and you get the real sales (also add he battle chest to Burning crusade and you get sales for that).
Because they are selling a bundle version of the game its driving it down on the list. without actual numbers we have no idea how high WoW is. It could be outselling the Sims and spore creature creator. I'd say the same about the sims too but I'm counting expansions seperate (or else you'd add all 3 of WoWs listings together).
its still impressive AoC is still up there, I was expecting it to drop much fasters.

lol - Find it funny how the fanboys are gonna focus now that AOC must be great since ppl are buying it. We all know its not lke that. Its a shallow and build for Xbox and casual gameplay. If your in for that and with abit of spare time you can spend 30 days lvl to 80 and then dont pay the sub.
But to the point. Maybe read the announchment again ? Its build on 2 week old figures. From the 21s of June. So ye... Thats before the bugged patch and thats before they skipped a patch.
Sometimes I think the fanboys are even worse than the haters. Facts seem to be something that .... is irrelevant if you want to show it .... haters...
Sad thread. Trying to prove what? Let it go and time will tell.
As i ve said in other posts i could care less about this game, if it does well great if it doesn t who cares. Avery stop reaching, play your game and ignore people if they bother you. I have seen your tone get alot worse recently. I m not sure if it s because your game is less then what you wanted, or if it s your goal to protect it like it s your life. Really who cares if I or anyone else says they don t like it. On topic that means nothing really, it s the only new MMO out in awhile, with some differences from WOW so ya i think people bored with WOW and games similar would buy it. Just give it time, it will do ok but the sales will drop alot come sept-nov, for many reasons:)
How is WoW still selling that many copies? The damn game's been out for almost 4 years...with 1 expansion. But that's another topic.
WoW's concept was an incredible mix of society, gameplay and ease of use.
WoW's chat interface should be studied by other companies for the ease of use.
WoW specifically made it run on backwards technology so more people could play.
WoW did a great job of looking at the market and stealing what worked. WoW also came closer to balance different classes than any other MMORPG on the market.
Too bad the original designers moved on.
Waiting for the next thing
i know one thing blizzard are laughing there tits off at funcom. just made there job easy for the new expansion
LOTRO did a wonderful job on expanding the WOW/EQ formula.
It didn't sell millions, it is a niche and sells lower then EVE online, a mmo that caters to a niche but does better then a mainstream product but that mainstream product ( LOTRO) sells as a niche .
Anyway. Cloning WOW/EQ formula doesn't make that mmo successful, the opposite infact. I think allot of people want something different. Not games lke AOC or LOTRO but something different, something more like EVE but with a easier learning curve and a balance between linear storytelling and sandbox game play /virtual world content and the possibility to affect the world.
But like i said. EQ/WOW clones ( the majority ) mostly do not well. A mmo like AOC doesn't do very well and LOTRO either. I am not saying they fail. I am saying they don't succeed because they copy the EQ/WOW formula but sell less , they even sell less or won't be as successful as some sandbox mmo's like EVE or UO.
But of course, the design is easier. Linear mmo's are just easier to make. Especially mmo's like WOW and EQ.

Why do games like LOTRO and AOC not do better ? Simply - they dont get the good parts that ppl already like in other MMOs and apply it to their own game.
Is it top graphics and solo content that is making WOW so populare ?
Or is it maybe Addons that allow you to change the look and feel of the UI, Addons that allow you to change the chat if you want ? Is it the high priority of gameplay over the 100% realistic ? And talking about realistic. Witch is more realistic ? Top graphix with loading screens or less quality graphix (but still good animations)and fluent gameworld ? I wonder...
WoW took most of what was good out of 5 best MMOs out there and they implemented it to their game. And then added few quality technical features that made the gameplay more fun and less of a "why did they do it this way?"
LOTRO and AOC picked none of the good things out of WOW. They did not focus on quality gameplay. They went back to the old days of saying... we can't do this cause its to tecnically complicated for us to solve. And then ofc - AOC went to new lvls making grapchix more important than the gameplay. Simply can't do anything other than fail.
Too bad everyone that buys the game plays for the free time and then quits and deletes aoc off their hard drive.
If this statement were true, more people would be playing EVE. The truth is, more people want to play a game like WoW. That is why it is selling more. Does that mean WoW is better? No at all. It just means that more people are interested in it.
When EVE has numbers that are anything near what WoW has you will see developers put serious effort into improving that formula. Until then, sandbox type games will remain a niche market.
More people want to play a "game" then play in a "world". Proven by sales.
