25GB

This must be my first MMO that eat up 25GB of my computer and still close to Beta. =)

Sorry... but I can't understand why this game need so much space. It's not that special... voice sound? Nipples and Blood? Thats about it... or is this game huge like hell? Sure graphics are great, but so are other games... still they are not 25GB... I don't get it... hmmm.

That makes me wondering too: how are they going to fit the game into XBOX 360 ?

    It's definitely possible w/ PS3's Blu-ray.

It's a MMORPG which demands lots of resources that is placed and used directly from YOUR computer, check the file's and see what they are which will explain why this game is that big in filesize, there are some rdb data extractors around so if you really curious to know what is in those files.

Simply look at the more general singleplayer games which also are at a point many of them are 10+ GB (GRID, MassEffect,SC-DoubleAgent to name a few) I remember having fun with games that where just a few kb. lol and look at where games are today, and i am sure that in a few years it's common to have TB size games, if we don't have some other form of medium by that time.

Why do you think blue ray games was so great to hear about. Games should be large. People have two or three 250gb hard drive these days,

Compressing textures just leads to uglier looking graphics, so with larger games means better quality graphics. and for the record, strangle hold and turok pc where both over 20gigs once installed.

I agree, and think that's fine for those of us who still buy our games in the box.  Not everyone out there has a 16mb/min or larger download speed.

The game has alot of content, the graphics are amazing - no MMO comes close in this department. Put them both together and you have a big game. Considering technology these days, complaining about a game of this size is very pedandic on your part.

This isn't true.  Vanguard has great graphics and a large world as well.  It also has static atmospheric conditions as well.  I don't enjoy Vanguard, but it does compare favorably in the visual aspect to Age of Conan.

I think the reasonable players of AoC are coming to realize that this game just isn't built that well, it isn't optimized, and it really shouldn't be live yet.  It needed 6 more months.

But how's Funcom's going to fit it into X360 ?

Surely, they can't outrule those poor bastards w/ smaller hard drive models ?

Don't be silly. They'll just bundle a hard drive with the game. At a premium price, of course.

Who cares about 25GB? For most disks that would be less than 10% & PCs often have several drives.

If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?

hehe...a game with its own hard drive...now that would be something. Or most likely, it would be like those early movie-games for the cd consoles, 50 hour ingame movies, 5 minutes gameplay

25GB doesn't surprise me that much.  I remember when my friend's parents bought a machine with 1MB.  We were convinced they'd never use it all.  Some day we'll be discussing game sizes in the 100s of GB and TB I'm certain.

The XBox comments do make one wonder though.

  • It is because of how they store their patch downloads on your comp.

Was already done by SOE for the Playstation 2. Final Fantasy XI came with a hard drive.

Funny, as I cancelled my account and went to uninstall I checked available hard drive space and was struck with the same amazing realization. Conan is a friggin hog. I think wow even with TBC is below half of what Conan takes up.

Oh, and the only system printing to blu-ray is the PS3 and it has the same limitations as the 360, because the games are actually loaded onto the hard drive, which are still relatively small.

The PS3 does not install all of its games to the hard drive, some games store a large chunk of data to speed up access and optimise the game but they dont generally install the whole title to HDD. This can range from a few Mb of core data up to many Gb (and yes, a few titles only store the save-games on the HDD), but not a full Blu-Ray disc of content. Please check your facts before posting (Yes, I do own a PS3 and a fair number of titles for it along with a 360). The reason you see more data being placed on HDD with the PS3 is that Sony did not put restrictions on HDD use - Microsoft did as games also had to be able to run properly on the non-HDD 360 and use of the HDD was limited, some HDD caching takes place but titles dont generally install more than their actual updates and saves on the 360 (I dont know the full extent of the restrictions that MS put in place or what their current policy is).

Back to the question of why conan takes up 25Gb - probably badly formatted graphic and sound files, looking at my PC games collection very little uses that much space and those games that do have far more musical and graphical content that AoC does - for an MMO its a particularly small one in the respect of its world size. Compare AoC to a full install of EQ2 and its expansion packs - far more graphics data for varied areas (uses some nice high res textures and is still a good looking game), more voice-overs, more sound in general and FAR more content (and I am sure last time it was installed it weighed in at less that 25Gb). I really have no clue how AoC can justify its 25Gb footprint. Its basically an MMO-lite.

hah! That's why the game requires so much to install! With all the diferent characters you can make, and all the vaguely similar 'races', they had to create a set of tits for every variation of the female PC, thus, 50% of the game's required memory is all for the tits.

Hey! Be happy though, if Funcom truelly is ninja-clothing chicks in the game like some believe, that should reduce the required memory :D

yeah when i saw how much space it needed at intsall i had to quit and and backup some stuff off my hd to fit it.  i remeber the next day i was telling my gaming buddies "dam aoc is about 30g, you evet see a game that big?"  i dont think ive ever played a game mmo or otherwise that took up as much space as aoc.

i have a 160g and a 120g iddnt have enough space for aoc.  if you actaully use your computer to do stuff its easy to fill up hds.  so the 25 gigs was a big deal to me.

Actually there is a restriction for PS3 cert. 5gig on HDD (developers can request more). As far restrictions on blu-ray, the first year it was limited to single layer 25g, now they were permitted to use dual layer 50g. With multilayering they can pack in more than 200gb. And yes I have both PS3 and 360 also. MGS4 jam packed a 50g dual layer. The install time is like 15-20 min and anything it caches is 1-3 min. Since we are talking about online play, in a massive persistent world like Conan, the game would need to be permanately loaded to the HD. If it were to release for 360 or PS3, I would expect it to be sold with a HD much in the same way FFXII was. But the again, the game is complete crap, if it survives PC, I'll be surprised if it ever sees a console.
