You've played the stress? .. So how do you view your other MMORPG now??

Is there one?

I've been pacing back and forth my computer with an itch ....looking at my CoH game box wondering if playing it again would simply feel like drinking a non alcoholic beer or would it be more like eating yellow snow...

I might wait a couple of days and then log on to get feel for it ...then I'll make a decision. In the meantime, what are you going to do?

lol at least when you play WoW youll know it wont be an underpopulated server.

    I mean for points:

    1. There never was an NDA, they were so confident of their craft that they allowed the beta testers to talk all they wanted about it. This IMO is one of the Smartest moves they couldve made. It showed us they had nothing to hide, no hidden bugs/problems/hitches. And the feedback back from testers was always: "very polished... great game".
    2. Theyve allowed around 100k people to sample World Of Warcraft at one point and another and an amasing thing about WoW is that the dropout rate isnt like the 'other' mmorpgs i.e 80% of people who beta never want release version. During Stress test i could always see about 30-40k people playing at any time. So thats about 60k of the actual applicants playing. From Public Consensus this game is going to be great.
    3. Its graphics do look cartoony, but IMO i prefer them like that. Games like EQ2 have Real Life Graphics, that due to their 'lifelikeness' you expect more from them to become immersed. I expect thatll be a problem people who Play EQ2 will have. Regardless the engine is still a playable and unique environment, with minimal load times and lots of fps.
    4. It has PVP, an option to pvp unlike some other games coming out soon.
    5. It may not have brand spanking new features but the classes, the races, the world is all unique in a sense. The skills used are all 'fresh'. Atm the lvling may be considering too fast but at least you wont be playing WoW Ever-Grinding.
    6. The Quests are fairly interesting, sure some need tweaking like the 30 Quilboar tusk thing, but overall the quests are all linked and have their own little stories and nuances. Additionally your class has his own quests to go around and do too.
    7. The game has the elements from Diablo 2 i loved so much, items, rares, Uniques etc. individual characters, groups and more importantly that sense of competition.
    8. The economy doesnt seem to bad, altho from stress test purposes you cant really tell. I managed to buy enough items and i could lvl all the trade skills i choose to lvl. The bronze/silver/gold system is interesting :).

Overall i think its kick ass :).

I was not particularly interested, I am not a big fan of Blizzard. I have played their games and enjoyed them but they never had long term playabilty for me. I got the stress invite and thought what the heck I'll check it out.

WOW is the right name; I am hooked. The game in it's present state is better than a lot of other games I played after release. The graphics aren't the greatest and the classes are derivtive but the game is VERY playable.

I created a Night Elf Warrior and got him to  level 19 at the end of the stress test. It was very easy to get into and I am hoping they keep a lot of what I saw in the final release. A lot of quests, easily soloable and grouping is a lot of fun also.

I have played most of the MMORPGs out there and Beta tested more than a few, I am kicking myself for not signing up for this Beta. I have pre-order the collectors edition.

    From what I saw I give it a 9 out of 10.

WoW is by far the best MMORPG that I've played. It's actually fun, and doesn't make you grind all of the time like nearly all others. WoW also doesn't punish you by making you sit around and regain your mana and health or steal your XP if you die. It also feels like you're playing in a real world. There's actually some sort of storyline that you reveal as you go. It's great!

Graphics were beautiful, but for me it offered nothing that others already have. JMO.

    I won't be buying it.

One person said "it will give you months of play". I agree with that, for me. It will only be "months". Horizons, AC2, and PE, etc all gave me "only" months,.

I want another game that will offer me years :)

I played the WoW Stress Test and tried out a couple of archetypes.  I didn't care for it.

    1. The graphics reminded me of Donkey Kong

    2. The avatar customization was a farce.  Every "like-race" toon looked the same.

    3. There was absolutely NO instancing.  I hated waiting in line for an arch-villain to respawn so I could have my turn to kill him; assuming someone else didn't rush in first.

    4. The loot drops were...well, silly.  A friend of mine killed a Nightsaber and got a Glass of Ice Cold Milk as his loot.  How lame is that.

    5. Mobs would spawn directly on top of you during combat.

I'm back to playing CoH and loving it.

    1.  I like it, as do many others.  Just preference.

    2. Yea so that is a little lacking, oh well.  It is beta, Blizzard can change that.

    3.  There are instanced dungeons, but you wont get an instanced general area, like Elywynn forest or anything like that.  If you need to kill a boss mob, get in a group with the other people hunting it.

    4.  Maybe the Nightsaber was female, they make milk.  Not that silly in my eyes.

    5.  Well yea, if you fight enemies in their camp you are going to get spawned on.  Just pull the mob away a little and kill it.

Oh and to a post earlier, there was an NDA.  I might be able to find a link to a screenshot I remember seeing that had NDA in it.  Going to have to dig.

As to what I thought of it.  The only other MMORPG I have played is FFXI, and WoW beats the crap out of it.  FFXI cant touch WoW at all.

    Hahahaha ...  *ahem* ... you're kidding right??

I think when a cat drops a glass of milk we are beyond the point of rationalization. And if you really want closure on that one, I got a glass of milk from a spider once.

Not but seriously... I guess it never bothered me coming from many many hours of playing Diablo II and killing stuff like vultures to get chain mails etc...

But I can see how it could be troublesome for certain. Funny thing is it seems blizzard tried making the loot partially realistic in the sense that you pretty much only get coins from humanoids.

I could care less if a spider dropped a two handed sword, let alone a glass of milk.  If Blizzard wants to make a fish drop a suit of mail, so be it, as long as I can A: Wear it because its better than my current stuff or B: Sell it for a decent amount of copper/silver/whathaveyou.  If equpiment like boots and the like only came from mobs that could use them (humanoid) they would be camped a lot more than they already are.

They have taken steps, like you said abollardiere, to make some drops come from certain mobs, like cloth and copper from humanoids, teeth and pelts from beasts, etc.

Guess my view on loot is, meh, whatever Blizzard does, Im fine with.

    1. I don't like the graphics either, but graphics don't make a game.

    2. Avatar customization always makes for long-term playability and fun factor, everyone knows that.

    3. There aren't many instances before lvl 20, but around level 20 they really start to populate if you check around. All the best loot is there too. Also, most respawns are on a 7 minute timer, especially for quest mobs. I have played 4 characters past 20 and 2 past 30, and I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes to kill a named. Since you get xp for all the rest of the stuff in the area and often have other quests around there, it's never been an issue.

    4. Milk is drink and replenishes mana. Yeah, it sucks that it just drops off mobs all the time because that's money you would have preferred to give to some vendor. Whatever.

    5. Mobs spawn where they always spawn. Don't stand in the road if you don't want to get hit by a truck.

The game has a good balance of community areas where people can cooperate (or race) with each other for quest items and mobs, and instanced content. Anyone who's played past 20 knows that the instanced content can be some of the most fast-paced and rewarding aspects of the game. Everyone I know that played CoH quit after 2 months, because all they ever did was instanced content. Get mission, go kill it all, rinse, repeat. In WoW there are some involved quests, some quickies, some quests to move you to different areas, some elite quests you need a group for, some instanced quests, and some stuff you just kill for tradeskill stuff. Some of it is in the open, some of it is instancing. It's a good balance.

What "other" MMORPG?  I've been waiting for WoW since they announced it was in development.  Now that the Stress Test is over, I'm going through withdrawl.  I've enetered almost every contest available trying to get into Closed Beta, but my luck sucks.  I did the EQ thing, I did the DAoC thing, and I even tried the *tries not to choke* FFXI thing *gags*.  I've tried some others, but there are the big players, and then there are the small players, and when WoW is released, it's going to be a Big Player, not a flash in the pan, or another small product offered by a large game conglomerate.

This is good, the other Big Guys need the competition to remind them that they still need to keep trying, so the rest of the people that stay with those others will have somehow benefited from WoW moving into their turf.

As far as Stress Tests go, that was some of the finest stress testing I've seen, with minor latency hiccups during PVP, but other than that, I had a blast.  Hell, they even extended the stress test to make up for the downtime.  That was cool.  Now I just have to wait for NZone to announce their winners... *prays to the Blizzard Gods*... Let me in, you know you wannaimage

    Any interesting point indeed:

If WoW is not only a success but turns out to be a huge success financially crippling all other MMORPGs, what effect will that have on the development of other future MMORPGs?

Until now there wasn't a real undisputed champion. Close calls but no Bill Gates of the MMORPG industry. If you're developer looking to create a MMORPG, you're going to have to think twice about how  to surpass a giant like WoW has the potential of being. Might make way for some good stuff to look forward to.  ... but than again, Diablo II was a huge success, still sells for $19.95 at Best Buy 4 years later ... and no one's really successfully released something similar which has had an overwelming financial success.

      feedback?

I think the cancellations of Dragon Empires, Warhammer Online and UXO speak for themselves. Unless the game is considerably different or niche, competing direclty with WoW and EQ2 and this point is quite stupid.

Sometimes, just sometimes, mind you, you have to set aside your vaunted immersion and realism in favor of fun, and gameplay. So milk drops of some unusual mobs. Not like that sort thing is something new. Hell, it's practically a staple of MMOs to have crap drop off mobs it has no business being associated with.

But to answer you question, all animals in Wow are custom fitted with a Gnomish milk dispenser which keeps it cold, and provides a convenient glass to hold your ice cold refreshing beverage.
