I don't think that the Funcom guy is lying about anything. They had a great patch that made the difference between a disaster and a success. I witnessed it myself, and noone can change my mind about that. It was the most surprisingly good patch I've ever seen in an MMO. After that, they had a smooth launch. The game was totally playable and enjoyable. Launch is not about end game sieges and loot. Launch is about the first weeks of gameplay. And AoC got that right. They sold in huge numbers, and they got great reviews from media all over the world. That is a good launch. Bad launch was AO. Bad launch was VG. Unplayable games, low sales.
You might be packed in this forum trolling and hating, but it is always like that. Same thing will happen with WAR and AION. People that don't like a game are moving on, people that like it are playing it, bored people come here and start a crusade against a company. Whining is a very exhilarating activity anyway, I do it all the time. But that does not make me lose connection with reality. Sad truth for you Anti-FC crusaders.
The god damn stats didn't work, crafting didn't work. Yes, Tortage did work but that is because the last days of closed beta were all about fixing Tortage to make it as bug free as possible. Remember the part where people were getting stuck in the Field of The Dead? That was one of the things that were ignored during the last days of beta.
Their whole thing was to make Tortage as problem free as possible because they knew that reviewers will base most of their reviews on the first 20 levels. With that they succeeded. I don't know what they were hoping for once people reach level 20, maybe they were hoping that the game will magically fix itself, but after level 20 the game turns to crap.
Funcom from the outset should have realized that to compete in an MMO market where a game like WOW is dominating and will continue to dominate, they need a better quality product than what WOW was when it released. I'm told LOTRO was a pretty fun and polished game but still couldn't compete with WOW. Someone should make a list to see how many MMOs have failed where WOW has succeeded.

I actually think it would be a intresting study to see why some games become hits while others dont. Even if they are offering the same "quality". PPL can try to talk about WOW like a nub version of MMOs. But its still THE MMO that has had more players than ALL other MMOs put together. Or very close to it. So maybe WOW should be in a diffrent catagory than MMOs. Or maybe we should not talk about games like LOTRO and AOC as MMOs? I dunno. What I do know is that I hate LOTRO for 3 basic reasons.
a) The moral system. How stupid can you get playing music in combat....
b) Animations - just really bad in so many aspects
c) UI - Worst ever.
And then you might see what I like about WOW compared to LOTRO.
does not matter. the game is dropping off the sales charts now. Xfire shows people deserting it in droves. Servers will be ghost towns in 2 or 3 months once the hard core fanbois see that FC can't put their coding where their mouths are. I saw the same thing happen to Dark and Light and Vanguard. Realists say "this game sucks" fanbois pray the devs will fix it. Same old story, different game.

AoC is currently the 13th most popular game in Xfire. That is almost 2 months after release, and the downward slope of the curve seems to be stabilizing. Furthermore, it has almost 2 times the hours/players of EVE and 3 times those of LotRO. I think it is doing very well.

But most people here think: "It is already dead". "It flopped". "The new VG". "The new DnL". "Funcom is about to go bankrupt". "SOE is about to pick up AoC". etc.
Well as far as i know, as i didnt play beta, the beta players were under the impression that the game would crash and burn since it was so laggy, only to find that it was patched just before release. So from going from "crash and burn" to playable is some form of a miracle from the players point of view, check back in these forums and you will see for yourself, the posts indicating that it will fail. As far as memory leaks go now, they may still exisit but tbh i dont experience them. That doest mean to say that they are not there however. But ultimately they will be fixed.
I actually consider the release a success, why, beacue i could log on without queuing i had no major bugs and did not crash, compared to other games i would say that that is a successful launch.
As for customer services, i do think they were overwhelmed with issues, but that is not just down to Funcom, as there were 1000s if not more petitions on things that people simply didn't know how to do, and instead of going to find out, they would rasie a petition, which will need to read and addressed before being discarded, all this take time. So yes they were lacking but thus is not soley there fault. And ultimately the servers were up almost 100%.
The beta testers were testing an older build.
They were testing the build that they released at launch internally and now they act like it's a freakin miracle!?!
Funcom is trash, almost as bad as the Dev team from Dark and Light.
Well of course Funcom is going to say good things about their game. Its their game so why wouldnt they? The Funcom PR people are doing their jobs. They're not gonna say "Yeah our game is terrible. It has lots of bugs and loads of our players hate us". If you're gonna sell a product that can make you money you would be a bit of a dumbass if you cast it in a negative light. Even if they DID say something like "Our game had a terrible launch and its full of bugs and we are having problems fixing it" what good would that do? Would it change anything? Nope. Would it make any difference to the state of the game? Nope.
Yes it has problems and lots of players are annoyed by it and no they dont care what any of you think or say about it. Why should they? People are still playing it and people are still enjoying it......and guess what? They will get away with it too. Big bad evil Funcom will make another game in the future too and guess what? Everyone will buy it and play it.......just like people play games made by big bad evil SOE who ruined everyones precious Starwars Galaxies game (boohoo!).
But by all means fight against the evil Funcom empire. They did afterall set out to crush your soul. You MUST stand up against them! You MUST save all of those innocent people from mass destruction at the hands of the evil Funcom empire! Quick before its too late!
Actually why dont you organise a protest. You could gather up a load of nerds and get them all fired up with super nerd-rage and then you can gather outside their offices with slogans like "No more lies" and "Fix our game". Go on I dare you! You obviously feel SO strongly about it. I'm dieing to hear your campaign strategies LMAO!!!!

it is stabilizing LOL. Game dropped another 20% ( 5222 hours) in the last week from 28,493 on July 8th to 23,271. Which is better than the 10 and 12 K a week drops for sure, but even if it keeps dropping 2 or 3 K a week won't be long before it drops out of the top 100. This is the game that was logging over 60K hours just a month ago and over 90K at launch.
It will stabilize all right, about the time it is logging less than a thousand hours a day.

Take a look at these games numbers on xfire. No it doesn't have anything to do with understanding subscription numbers, but it gives a decent overview of whether games are holding players attention, a very specific scope of players that is:

Notice one game that shows a unique trend unlike the others? Or any of the top played games on xfire.com website. I do, and so do many others.
edit, attemp to fix broken links

Whats funny is he doesnt realize it went from #4 to #13 in 2 months time. That and the curve isnt stablizing, its just gone from a steep drop to a slow and steady drop.

This is where your wrong. I would not buy another sigil game even had they stayed in buisness. Nor will I ever buy another Funcom game. And many many people are beginning to think like this. <Mod edit>. Stop and send a message. DO NOT RELEASE UNFINISHED GAMES.
Honestly, I cant see this game survivng for longer than a few months from now, give people time to let their free months run out, and one or two months into the paid parts, and they''ll change their tune.
I was part of the IGN "General" Beta, wasnt open, just General, two weeks before launch, yet we were only able to test the first 20 levels, hence Tortage. I'll say this, my computer is no crysis running beast, but it matched the specs to run the game. Yet even on the lowest of low, i got .4 fps. Best part? Apparently I wasnt the only one with issues with the general beta client, as there was a good 15-16 page list of issues, all basically dealing with the same shit. And you know what I saw after that beta ended? Funcom claiming that "It was a major success, and only a minor few had some issues".
Now, two months or so later, they are still spewing out this trash. I've also seen more than a few complaints on their official forums, with no responses by them. Funcom has always been a slow company in response to its player base, but with some posts passing 50 pages with nothing, its kind of sad.
now... if you want to see some real PR work... check these two links out
Talking of PR, this probably wasn't the best thing for the AoC Product Manager to be saying to Journo's at E3....
"Age of Conan product manager Erling Ellingsen wandered by. ..
So I posed he question to him. "When will Age of Conan be complete enough for a full review?" His answer? "About a month."So there you go folks, directly from the product manager. Age of Conan should be review ready in a month, when the PVP portions are firmly in place.
I really sympathize with Erling here. To have to stand there and admit that your game - already on retail shelves for nearly 2 months - will be finished in a month? This is why he makes the big bucks. Well, that and his awesome hair."

I'll say it again:
The miracle patch was just removal of effects/animations etc and lowering the amount of players in each instance. Plus the removal of the debugger.
ie. mostly a panic patch.
