But whatever the hidden message LA tries to convey (or not) with their decision to partner with Bioware, the NGE is not forgotten.
A lot of people still expect LA / BIOWARE to give what LA / SOE took away. LA can't hide behind Bioware and send a wow / nge clone on the market with little substance without pissing people off.
Yes, in fact ii hope SOE take it as a massive insult, it maybe the only way they (and perhaps the MMO market as a whole) will learn from the experience.
I think LA saw the massive potential of a Star wars MMO with SWG (pre NGE), only to watch it crash and burn because of SOE mismanagement. I now believe that they simply want to re-tap the MMO market as another stream of potential profit and possibly redeem the Star wars MMO franchise.

LA forced the changes onto the game then let SOE take the heat, this otherwies would have been a much cooler game if they had left it skill absed etc
the SOE and KOTRO games are two different beast
Interestingly enough Bioware did KOTRO while Obsidian did KOTROII

Far too many considering it is false. LucasArts did not force SOE to implement the NGE, they allowed SOE to do it. It was the folks at SOE who came up with the NGE concepts, and it was the folks at SOE who convinced the folks at LucasArts that the changes would increase the subscription numbers.
The CU and NGE were both concieved by the SOE development team.

It's very amusing to watch the defenders of SOE trying to place the blame for the NGE on anyone but SOE. The only one's who try foist the blame for the NGE on LA are these defenders. Face the facts, the NGE was developed in house by SOE, it was SOE that convinced the Lucas Arts people that "no one wanted to be Uncle Owen or Aunt Beru, and everyone wanted to be Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader." It was SOE that forced it down the gaming public's throat and it was the players that said "up yours SOE".
Doesn't it? Isn't it the ultimate insult to SOE and Smedley from LA by choosing a new partner? LA is saying SOE can't make a quality SWG game.
Where is the announcement ? Got a Link? Bioware has done good work making console games ,making a mmo will be a hell of alot harder to make than a console game. Just because they made good console games does not mean that their mmo will be.

By a lot of people, you mean disgruntled SWG vets who still haven't gotten over themselves or what "soe did to their game"
Bioware doesn't care about pissing people like you off, they care about making a game taht appeals to the largest audience possible...an SWG rehash is not that game. Just because it's not a sandbox does not mean that it's a WoW clone...I'm so sick of hearing that song and dance from people like you.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

What's also amusing is when people bring up SOE's incompetence, they only refer to the NGE.
SOE failed with the Star Wars franchise from the very beginning, starting with the poorly designed pre-CU game that eventually brought about the NGE change in the first place.

It has NEVER been said that LA forced the changes, but they 'approved' them. It was developers in SOE that had the idea, took it to Smedley, started conceptual development and took it to LA. They got approval and continued work outside the backs of the main SWG developers, as they fel the CU was a failure already.
LA did NOT create the changes, LA did not FORCE the changes... I don't know if you just love SOE or just don't pay attention to what people in the 'know' have said, including myself...
SOE barely gives a crap about the US/Europe MMO market, PERIOD.
For your own research, go look up the DC Comics Press release from SOE when they acquired the IP, right before the NGE hit SWG. SOE specifically said the NGE was going to be the 'testbed' of a new type of targeting system they were going to use in DC Comics, and they 'hoped' to enrich SWG as well with the new direction.
So many of the NGE changes and ideas came from the original DC Comic developers WORKING IN SOE, as they wanted to test a FPS type of targeting (with 100s of people in an area, it doesn't work well, I hope they freaking learned.)
The NGE SOE developers also wanted to try to create an MMO concept that played more like UT or Halo, where players just fight, die, respawn, and fight - hence the removal of death penalty and decay from SWG. This is the part of 'fixing' the game the developers still are NOT allowed to touch in SWG, even though they have the ability to change other aspects of the game. The Halo type player is NOT an MMO player or at least NOT when they are playing an MMO.
Halo is to jump in, have fun, sign out. MMOs are 'communities' and it is sad the very 'definition' of a community and social based game SWG was bastardized by SOE to 'test' their DC comics crap.
LA sucks, don't get me wrong, their gaming teams are retarded at best and they have never produced a successful Star Wars Game, as it is usually farmed out to other talents over the years. Even when LA gaming was set up, they were not allowed to touch any of the original Star Wars games, in fact I think SWG may have been the first they had any major role in.
LA was stupid for listening to the SOE con and Smedley, and SOE was even more stupid for creating the NGE crap and using SWG to test development for other upcoming games like DC Comics and the Agency. (Notice the spy testing in SWG, you will find elements of the NGE in these games coming out, as SWG is the official SOE test whore, and LA has written it off after the cluster**** of the CU that SOE also shoved out.)
Why not reserve judgment for when this new game is released. If it fails, then you can say the common element is Lucas Arts. If it succeeds, then you can say the blame lies with SOE. Neither one are logical arguments, but people sure as heck will use them nonetheless.
Not that it matters, though...the amount of rabid hype surrounding this title has completely doomed it.
I still say its LA's fault also. I still think LA did some pushing to go NGE. I had left the game years before because I felth the game was badly designed from the start. The fact that we don't know who to blame also shows me that there was chaos behind the scenes. Who had the final decision on what? I'm really not looking forward to KOTOR. LA ruined my taste for SW IP with the last 3 movies. I really don't think this game will do well but doubt I'll be around to find out. For those ofyou who are waiting, hope the game is better than the movies....

SOE failed with the Star Wars franchise from the very beginning, starting with the poorly designed pre-CU game that eventually brought about the NGE change in the first place.
The first six months after release were 'hard' on the game, as it was still a beta product. Jan of the next year the game was pretty stellar and a year later had 500,000 sub numbers in an MMO market that most titles had 200,000.
The original developres 'knew' what they were doing and still are look upon as 'gods' of MMOs as they brought the whole 'social' and 'living' in the Virtual World to an MMO fro the first time. This is why previous SWG players are still so passionate, because they didn't lose a game, they lost a virtual place they lived, something no other MMO has successfully created, even WoW.
WoW wouldn't of had the success it had if it weren't for SOE continually screwing over customers. EQII they screwed customers, and SWG they were good to people up to the CU and then the new teams of the time were freaking awful, and it was evident that SOE didn't care anymore. (When the original developers jumped ship the writing was on the wall SOE was screwing over the game and it was going to get worse - hence the massive developer defectors after JTL as the next addtions to the game conflicted with the original design goals (these being the CU).
If nothing else Blizzard could see what NOT to do with an MMO and that is what they did. Of all the SWG players that left more than 70% of them still play WoW, even if not their main MMO, and even though many don't like being hand fed missions like a 5 yr old, at least WoW is fairly stable and Blizzard listens to the people playing first and foremost.
If Bioware brings their KOTOR knowledge with the 'social' and sandbox concepts to the new Star Wars, it will be the next WoW, as Bioware does care about customers to a painful level, even hurting themselves to make sure what they create is loved.
WoW wouldn't of had the success it had if it weren't for SOE continually screwing over customers. You can't really be serious here.
Of all the SWG players that left more than 70% of them still play WoW, even if not their main MMO, I'd love to see your data on this. If Bioware brings their KOTOR knowledge with the 'social' and sandbox concepts to the new Star Wars, it will be the next WoW, as Bioware does care about customers to a painful level, even hurting themselves to make sure what they create is loved. BioWare's MMO will not have the sandbox elements some of you are so desperately hoping for. To think otherwise means you've never played a BioWare game.
Sadly I think that this new game will jump right on the WoW train and the game will be sub par in the communities eyes.
Yeah it will be a new game and will probably be cool...like all the rest are... and then after a week it will be the same old $H1T. Cheezy meaningless waste of time quests to run and gather this flower for this guy on the other side of the map ...and then go back to the same spot and pick the one that was right next to it. Rinse and repete.
I sure as hell hope I am wrong but I seriously doubt it.

Spot on with that description.
What we want is a virtual Star Wars universe with a few structured interactive themes that are influenced by game play in an open sand box style game that allows us a multitude of things to do depending on our mood.
Sadly we will get another grind fest as every other company out there tries to reproduce wow like suscriptions. What they don't realize is that wow was made in the right place at the right time in the right manner for the era it was intended. For someone else to do what Blizzard did they will have to realize that the next evolutionary step in the mmo genre will have to be taken.
If Bioware listens to LA as much as SOE did, you'll have the same problems.

True enough. However, I do hope that the success of the KOTOR franchise and particularly KOTOR 1 also shows LA that they don't -NEED- to make suggestions.
Of course, it's all just speculation right now anyway. Wish they would actually come up with a real announcement.

Was there any doubt about it?
