Announcing the x-pack so early is very smart move by Funcom. All the fanbois will continue to pay the monthly fee, waiting for the x-pack that will fix this half finished, bugridden game.
It will NOT come early 2009. More likely dec 09 or early 2010. And yes, the fanbois will pay the monthly fee from now until then (about 18 of them...), hoping, hoping.
Why do you still say the x-pac will not be out early next year, sice we have already read from the horse mouth that it will?
I wouldnt be surpride that they are putting most of the, suppose to be inside the game during launch, gameplay into the x-pac and come out claiming its NEW!!!! ITS BEEN WHAT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! BUY NOW!!! kinda crap thing......
So its really rather easy for them to release it by early next year you see.....
The horses mouth seems to be a bullshit artist hehe.

Bullshit artist? Heh Funcom has taken Bullshit to a whole nother realm barely comprehensible by the human mind.
It will be hilarious when, months down the road, I hear about AoC Beta Te... I mean, *players*, pay for content they were supposed to have from the original game release

Yea they will add 4 cities and the Choppa. Seriously though, they are adding things that didnt make the cut this year, we hope.
The expansion is new content, not on the drawing board yet.
Where do you draw the line? Is every little bit of new additions in the future always going to be labelled as "should of been in for launch"?
Easily looking a year off for the expansion. In the meantime the game will have extra content added and additional Fugitive System. PLUS what didn't make the launch, eg, DX10 and the whole PvP system worked on as they didnt actually say it would have looting etc. Bloodmoney went out the window as it wasnt a viable system, was blood money in Beta? Yes, over 1 year ago and then got took out. And not to mention the whole Siege system being up to scratch.
Anything else is an Expansion just like any other game, which will include new starting area's and races amongst other things.

Any company can make all the promises in the world they want. Whether you take their word for it is all up on you.
For me, going from Funcom's track record for AoC, I have no faith in them. I put my money on it... via the CANCEL button.
The morons at Funcom have NOT even fixed the core game. End-game is still borked. Patches are screwing things up that were previously working. Class issues not being resolved. Major technical issues not being resolved. Etc., etc., etc. The game has been out about 2 months now, and no single major issue has been remedied.
If they haven't fixed the core game, I wonder what they can do with new stuff.

I know . Was just making the point about content "supposed to have from the original game release" comment. (Not knocking WAR) Its just a point. AoC's Expac will be just like any other games. Point is where do you draw the line for what should be an expac?
Obviously it shouldn't be things they said were supposed to be at launch and obviously the game should be up to snuff before either a) the xmas box special and b) an expansion.
They have talked about a lot of ideas long time prior to launch of AoC which they would like to see in addition to the original concept released as an expac on their roadmap. Things that were not on the drawing board for AoC / ideas for the future just like all companies.
I am in full agreement that the game should deliever on the details on the back of the box and be polished up properly before an expansion comes. I think FC agree there too.
The news about the expansion plans are not old, they are just coming to light more so because of the many existant bugs in the game, people are like "woah.. Expac... not buying that till the original is fixed" because the game is still broke in places. And there is nothing wrong with that mentality either.
What FC I feel are trying to put across is that they are in with AoC for the long haul and commited to it, by re-iterating expansion details still, shows in some way their commitment to the game. AO is 7 yrs old now.
You know what, everyone upset / disappointed / pissed off with the game in whatever way (myself included in some area's) should be able to see that they are committed to it, whether it is working or not, or whether people have already left or not. Proof will be how the game plays and the sooner its better the better for the genre and for all. The way they turned AO around was great, just like other games developers.
So for me its not a question of will they pay for fixes? I'm confident the fixes will come first and the Expansion later on - as its always been.
If people feel they are paying for the game to be fixed right now, then stop your sub, its pretty easy to do.
If people are continuing to have fun in the game and they feel its worth their money then continue to subscribe.
If your on the fence about joining up, then wait for the buddy keys to come out and then make your mind up.

I can see where you are coming from in a lot of your points, but I don't agree with all of them.
In my opinion, whether or not the expansion was planned a long time ago, they should have waited until things had settled down a bit before making announcements. Rather than reassuring concerned players that they were committed to the game in the long haul, it had the appearance of corporate denial linked to another way of making money. Maybe the investors wouldn't allow them to delay & they had no choice, but whatever the reasons it seemed like bad PR to me.
In particular though I disagree with your suggestion about "if people they are are paying for the game to be fixed right now, then stop your sub, its pretty easy to do". The problem with your suggestion is that there is no middle ground & in most other market sectors, if a customer had paid for services in advance & was unhappy because of quality & maintenance issues, the supplier would not simply say "take it or leave it".
Assuming the game had launched perfectly & there were no issues, the subscription rates would have still have been the same as they are now. If Funcom have acknowledged even partially that the service falls short of what they had initially hoped, why are they only expressing their regrets in words?
Luckily because I play a Demonologist on a PvE Server, I don't seem to have been that badly affected by some of the more 'interesting new patch features' (although I did get randomly blade-stormed by low level monsters for 5 times my maximum HP a few times, but to be honest I just laughed it off & treated it as a variation of 'russian roulette' where I had to kill the mob in a random time limit). I know that it might be hard to calculate because players are affected by bugs differently & it is difficult to put a price tag on the acknowledged shortfall in content, but if Funcom really wanted to reassure players that were uncertain if they wanted to continue, offering something more tangible might help.
It wouldn't have to be 'free game time' although that would probably be the most common suggestion after 'refund', but if there was some sort of in-game loyalty bonus (Not XP items though, levelling is already too easy!) they could offer to players that have continued to support the game though 'difficult times' it would be a good start.
Just my opinions. I really hope the game does succeed because I enjoy playing it & think it has a lot of potential, but I do find it depressing that Funcom don't seem to be taking things seriously enough.
If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?
Let me break a lance for Funcom and say, lets wait and see. I mean, if they have enough new content for an expansion not too expensive, its alright to *additionally* put "patch content" into the Xpack. Lets stay cool and wait for the details. I am always willing to criticize things, but ripping them apart before knowing any detail is just a bit ridiculous. I admit, they didnt deliver a lot of things they promised, so I too am very sceptical about the xpansion.

all I have to say they got till Sept to fix the crap ...and if they dont bye bye Funcom...I wanted it to be fun...but I am not gonna spent another dime for someone's else delusions. I wonder how this games won all theese awards before they even launch ....this industry is the only one that awards hot air. Imagine Oscars being given before movie release solely based on 50 second trailers. E3 is a joke, as well as IGN, Gamespy and 100 of other PR dummies. I also wonder if 90% of devs actually ever played any MMOS...more and more it seems games are designed by people who dont have a slightest clue what average MMO gamer wants from the most basic elements. To summ it up hype it hype it then take a crap in really nice candy wrapper then proceed collecting whatever you can for next 5 -6 months and squeeze every penny you can then send it first class to MMO graveyard (SOE). Then rinse and repeat with new title.

Does it really matter what details Funcom could possibly give right now about the expansion? They are still falling short of what they promised on release and the "fixes" they are proposing are stretching out over many months after the game has launched. Even those are missing their deadlines by months and creating more chaos than they fix.
Personally I don't care what story or promises they give about working on an expansion and I'm sure whatever they do announce will sound all peaches and cream. It just tells me they have resources that could and should be better allocated right now working on what is missing/broken from the base game they have already sold people, not working on their next product. Honestly expansions are not something a company puts a small team of people to work on.

If Funcom said that the x-pack would come dec 09 then very few would keep paying the monthly fee until then i think. But if Funcom say: "The super x-pack is only 5-7 months away!" then folk will stay because its only... 6 months away... in jan 08 Funcom will say: "The x-pack needs a little more polish it will come june 08" and so on...

And if Funcom had said that there is a plan to launch X-pack 4Q 2009 we would know these guys are at least abit realistic. And not sounding like they are trying to make more money for selling the orginal game content in their Xpansion.
This interview is bull from start to finish - and it actually tells us that AOC and FC is NOTHING other than lies and PR. Thats what is irritation everyone atm. Not just the haters - but also the fans. Cause EVERYONE can see the flaws - Its just Funcom that is not admitting to them. Instead they are "working on the next expansion".
...Where do you draw the line? Is every little bit of new additions in the future always going to be labelled as "should of been in for launch"?...
Usually the stuff you say is good info about this game AA but I just found this stupid to the person you were replying to.
When a gaming company says something will be in at launch, it should be labeled as "should of been in for launch". Not something extra to pay for in the future. Don't you find anything wrong with that?
Alot of people will say it's too early to tell that FC plans on putting these features in these expansions but I can almost guarantee it... in fact, I'd be willing to put a bet on it. Seeing as how FC has been going about business so far it's an almost sure-fire outcome.
I'm all in for expansions when they offer new content, you are right on that AA. But this expansion, I highly doubt, will include a huge arsenal worth paying for unless you want what was originally promised. If they actually put out the things that were originally promised before this expansion freely then I'll eat my words. But the sad thing is that it's very unlikely...
I wish the rest of the gaming industry doesn't become a money-obsorbed (yes, money is important; but not the main purpose) corporate manifesto like FC has, but it will be very likely. I will give Gaute that; the launch was successful in the sense of sales. And the sad thing is that is all that matters.
This company at one time had a good track record, now I will never buy a product from them again, bye bye funcom....
Dreamfall - One of Funcom's best gaming efforts (never played The Longest Journey) was incomplete, all that story to end up with the protagonist in a coma and none of the plot lines concluded.
It wasn't "incomplete". You're being a bit disinenguous here. None of the plot lines were concluded because Dreamfall isn't the end of the story.
I mean, the cliff-hangers were pretty obvious.
- Who/what killed the White Dragon?
- What's the deal with Brian Westhouse; what's his true role in all this?
- Is April Ryan really dead?
- What's the deal with Faith and Zoe... is there something more to that?
- What role does WATI Corp still have to play, if any?
I'm sure there's more.. but those are all plot-lines that, to me and others anyway, make it obvious that there's going to be a continuation.
There's going to be a third part continuing, possibly concluding, the story. This has been pretty well known for a while now.
Ragnar Tornquist, the writer/creator of TLJ and Dreamfall has stated that he has every intention of continuing it, but that it likely wouldn't be 'til after AoC's development was complete (then still a couple years away) and resources were freed up.
So... who knows when it will be be. But it will be.

This company at one time had a good track record, now I will never buy a product from them again, bye bye funcom....
Since when?
AO Launch - failure, massive bugs
AO: Shadowlands Launch - failure, half of the zones in SL werent even accessable.
AO: Alien Invasion Launch- failure, player shops not implemented into game til at least 3 months later
AO: Lost Eden - IDK, gave up on this game after AI, I'm sure half the features were broken at launch.
Dreamfall - One of Funcom's best gaming efforts (never played The Longest Journey) was incomplete, all that story to end up with the protagonist in a coma and none of the plot lines concluded.
Funcom consistantly releases unfinished products, AOC is just par for the course.
I have seen games end with missing pieces before but the Dreamfall ending is a bundle of loose threads that leaves players with a very bad and bitter taste. The Longest Journey was fantastic and the wait for a sequel seemed worthwhile. But what a major disappointment when it finally came. Although the gameplay was fine and the overall storyline held attention, it seems that the non-ending was developed simply so players would look forward to a few more years of waiting for another sequel. If they had promoted this as part two of three parts, players would have been prepared for the MAJOR let down. SHAME on the developers for this ploy. If it's not a ploy, then what began as a promising plot was brutally destroyed by the end of it all.
Meh. Most people I've spoken to and commentary I've read are people saying "Man so many cliff-hangers... I hope it's not as long a wait for Dreamfall's sequel as it was between TLJ and Dreamfall".
Yours, and the person you're quoting are the first two people I'm aware of that are taking it as some horrible "ploy" or something.
Again... the story is going to be continued. That has been known for a while now.

Let's see what really happens around October - November this year. When the hype is died down and Funcom has to report another Q financial report.
The whole talk about expansions might not never happen.

If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
I can sum up this thread as follows...
Expansion? WTF?
The desperation in AAs post is all alot need to see.
