Is the time of Sci-Fi coming upon us?

AbrahmmAbrahmm Member Posts: 2,448

Seems there is some good Sci-fi titles coming out fairly soon. We have Earthrise, Jump Gate Evolution, Stargate Worlds, and the rumored KotOR MMO. Is anyone else as excited as me to finally get out of the fantasy dominated genre and back into some good ole fashion Sci-Fi?

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Been waiting since SWG for another sci-fi MMO.

EDIT: Completely off-topic, but of some interest to sci-fi fans.  Tor's web site has some eBooks available for free on their web site (http://tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=577).  Thanks to Raph's website for this link ( speaking of SWG :p ).

Exact same situation here. I tried Eve but had trouble getting into it.

I stayed away from EVE, heard it was brutal for new people (vs. veterans).

I can't decide what I'm most excited about. Being a huge Star Wars fan, I'm naturally excited about a KotOR MMO, even though I have a feeling it will be a linear WoW clone, which isn't what I'm looking for. I'm pretty excited about Earthrise as it sounds very sand boxy, I just hope it can deliver. Tonight was the first time I looked at Jump Gate Evolution, and quite honestly I think it looks really cool. Never played(or even heard of) the original and the basic idea is very interesting, on top of the fact that I have been a combat flight sim fan for all of my gaming career. It's a very exciting time for MMO's for me, as the last couple years have been very dull, repetitive, and disappointing, the next year or two looks very promising and exciting.

It's not that bad, you should be able to kill vets after 1 month of playing.

I'm an swg vet too and find there's alot of similar features.

Yes, I've been watching those titles. Anyone any idea which is likely to come out first? And when?

Its hard to say since none of these games are out yet, and its still possible for them to suck hard when they are released, much in similar fashion to AoC.

Will have to wait and see.

Yes, and no. I would like to see some sci-fi titles, but I don't have any confidence that any of the ones you listed will be any good.

I definitely want to play as a person, not as a spaceship like in EVE.

It's not sci-fi exactly, but I did like City of Heroes. It was a nice change from the fantasy genre.

Isn't a Star Trek MMO on the way as well?

You forgot Fallen Earth, my personal pick out of the upcoming games.

I'm sick to death of fantasy, in both singleplayer AND mmorpgs. And 99% of existing sci-fi mmorpgs ( even the damn browser and MUD games ) are space-based games. Sci-fi never meant "space only".

So hopefully sci-fi and maybe even some other genres such as modern times, horror, etc. will finally get a real foothold in the market.

Yeah Earthrise should be sweet but it feels like a long way off. But we still got WELL Online as well on the horizon. Yeah there really is a huge hole for scifi western produced MMOs

omg that feels like a post I would write down to the last letter

Seriously though EVE is okay if you can get past the extreme learning curve. What mmorpg are you playing right now to tie you over or do you play other genres to occupy your time. I'm currently playing EVE + KOTR 1 which occupies all my time :)

keep playing the CoX series til one of those comes out. I have been keeping a close eye on earthrise.  I am really intrerested in what that game will pan out to be.  Huxley is another but is slowly falling off my charts.  KOTOR MMO will be on my list too. Also, not sci fi but I will try out champions online too maybe even the DC one.

Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, Eve Online, DCUO, Rift

    Playing: SW:TOR

    Earthrise looks promising to me.

New sci based mmos have to be much better than Eve-online!

Sure is a Star Trek MMO, it's only been bankrupt repurchased new developers etc etc. I'd call it one of the biggest comedy of error's of MMO's that remains vaporware.

I hear you about playing as a person and not a ship, thats definitely an issue with EVE. All things considered, the combat of Sci-Fi MMO's is an issue. Lasers/phasers/stun guns/plasma rifles etc etc. All of these are much more destructive than any sword/dagger attack even when used by someone relatively unskilled. So I don't think the combat lends itself to suspension of disbelief the way fantasy does.

One day someone will figure out a sci-fi MMO where you need armored vehicles to tank the bosses (omg a real tank) hehe.

One of the things that makes Star Wars highly appealing as an MMO is that its essentially a Fantasy with a scifi veneer.

Myself, I think I'd rather see a MMO based on something like John Scalzi's Old man's war.

Not really anymore.  Used to be you started with so few skill points it was a month or so until you had enough skills to be effective.   Today you start with over 800k skill points, you can be effective immediately.  They have also added faction warfare where the level one tier of ships are effective and you can sample the pvp quite easily without being overly dominated by veterans.

Granted there is a lot to learn in this game, if you want instant gratification, it is not for you.  Scamming is legal so the motto trust no one is a good one to follow.  Grouping with only fellow corp members is very important, but there are lots of corps looking for new members.  Best to be involved in a corp than trying to learn this game solo.

About the weapons being more destructive than a sword or dagger, Instead of hitpoints, perhaps a person could have just a minor hitpoint pool where a shot or 2 will kill the person, but the main life points of a person so to speak is their shields.  So to kill a person, you have to burn through their shield like lifepoints, and the heals would be recharging the shields.

It would be basically the same thing as damaging a foe to dwindle their hp to kill them, but instead, they're just shields. Actually sounds a bit more plausible than getting nuked 20 times and finally dying, lol

hehe yes but most games make sheilds as soemthign that aren't very effective.  Can this hypothetical game be different sure.

But you definitely see where I'm coming from.   Personally I don't mind getting 1-3 shotted, provided I can do the samething and use cover etc etc.  I like playing FPS games and fail to see why no one seems to be making a MMORPG with FPS combat mechanics (heck FPS's are becoming RPG like in the levels/gear etc.. just look at COD4)

Currently I'm not playing anything right now. Star Wars Galaxies was my first MMO and I loved it. Since the destruction of it, I have tried a lot of games(including Eve a few times but had trouble getting into it), and out of all of the games I tried, I've only played Guild Wars(mostly because of real life friends) and WoW(again real life friends) for any decent amount of time. But those games weren't able to hold me for very long, about 8-9 month period each. Frankly I'm just sick of fantasy, it was never really my thing to start with. WoW is very simplistic and I think that it's moving in the wrong direction(My gripe is mostly with Arenas... I play a Feral druid, enough said. There should be WAY more focus on World PvP, give some type of reward for killing world bosses ect, but instead they are focusing on small instance pvp).

I just can't find a game I absolutely love the way I loved SWG. I'm hoping the one of the sci-fi titles I mentioned will be able to  help me out. I'm the most excited about Jump Gate Evolution and Earthrise at the moment though.

I would be excited for a good SF mmo.  EVE is a very good game (I've trialed it twice so far).  But my main problem with it is being perpetually stuck in a ship.  Let me go down and explore some planets, ancient ruins, etc..in addition to space based stuff.

Would love to see a "good" si-fi mmo. Eve is good to an extent, and so is Star Wars Galaxies, and Tabula Rasa is actually pretty good now. I actually haven't heard of to many Si-Fi mmo's that are in development, or at least, havn't heard muchy about them.

It's funny actually. Warhammer has been getting a ton of attention and is the major talk on this website, yet in my opinion Warhammer isn't anything new or Special, just seems like a more world pvp oriented version of WoW. Then Games like Earthrise and Jump Gate Evolution, which seem unique and potentially awesome, have something like 40 threads total in each of their forums. It amazes me that these games aren't getting a lot of attention.

Fallen Earth will be The title to watch (my view) sandbox and multiply fractions + neutral+skill based(vs class)+fps+cars+towns

    EarthRise gets my second place.

3th ,Champions Online will be the better version of cox,( tho it might be  a little liniar as more info leaks out)

JumpGate Evolutions.. well asfar I see it its just a remake of the old game and the old game was not That good. fun for the lovers tho

DC Online looks to become a joke , looks like CoH(x) + superman + dungeon runners setup. but could be totaly wrong , its  all personal views from other people reporting :)

StarGate Worlds looks nice but is problay a hub based game as far I can make out. X"rooms" and you  gate to instance worlds whit your team.

Huxley is no more then a fancy fps from what I read.

Comming years there some good looking Sci-fi And fantasie based mmo''s going live about half of them will be sandbox design and thats the most exsiting feature of them all for finaly people will learn to play a MMO(rp)G  again ,instead of fancy roadmapped singleplayer going multiplayer games.
