Caeron 3000

I am starting this post for the purpose of answering any and all questions regarding Caeron 3000.  This is a new sci-fi/fantasy MMORPG in development that has just recently been added to the games list here at MMORPG.com.  Hence I realize that most people are not familiar with it.

Caeron 3000 is being built in phases with the first phase scheduled for late 2005.  This phase will encompass space travel, exploration, and combat.  It will allow players to take control of huge battleships where individual players man the various stations, working together to keep the ship running smoothly.  You will be able to walk around the entire ship, live in your own quarters, launch and land fighters, repair damage during combat, et. al.

Phase 2 is going to include land exploration on a single planet and will include mech-style combat, cities, dungeons, outposts, wilderness, caverns, et. al.

Caeron 3000 is being built with the LifeLink AI engine for believable NPCs that have lives of their own.  They will carry out daily routines, communicate with players, and have memory of events that happened around them.

Any questions?

I hear this game will have a newtonian flight phsyics like Jumpgate... is this true???

  • tomjscotttomjscott Member Posts: 40
It will not have strict flight physics for space.  We are going for the look and feel of space combat as seen in movies like Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica (the original).  Very fast paced, incredible maneuvers, and the ability to see them in a very cinematic style.

Will the Profession/class advancement system be a Ultima online style model (ex - using bow's you advance in bow skill, or swords use advances you in sword skill)?

Or will it be more based on just an overall level system where you gain levels by using any weapon and only obtain a set list of skills with each level according to what profession you choose? Which also might have skill points you earn with each level that you put towards skills associated with your chosen class/profession?

    Thanks tom!

It's purely skill based.  Only skills that you use are advanced.  Also, skills are advanced on failure and not success.  This may seem strange at first, but consider real life and you'll realize that a person learns far more from his failures than his successes.  If you were to succeed on the first attempt then you already knew how to do it basically.  This makes for a more realistic learning curve that eventually causes your skills to level off at higher expertise.  Most professionals in real life don't add much to their skills unless they take additional training courses or target specific areas for focused enhancement.

I hope the graphics won't be as shitty looking as the caeron pictures mmorpg.com has.

Those screens were taken from pre-alpha demos done over 2 years ago.  The engine was fairly immature then.  The engine is improving and new screens will be released soon.  Please don't judge this game by early pre-alpha shots.  Besides, any game worth playing has much more than glitzy graphics.  Glitz and glamour can be added as we polish the game for launch.

Are you gearing this game to be mor elike Planetside or are you trying to develop more of a rpg?

  • tomjscotttomjscott Member Posts: 40
It will not be like PlanetSide, which is basically a massive FPS game.  Caeron 3000 will have elements of role-playing with tons of opportunity for missions and quests.  It will also have elements of strategy and FPS games as well.  Managing ships and troops in combat will allow you to fulfill all your shoot 'em up desires.  Since you can choose to join the military division, science division, resource division, or become independant, you can really choose how you wish the game to play based on your individual tastes.

       About the battleship control system:

If there are various players controlling one single ship, then I understand that like in Navy there must be various ranks, the commander will be a high officer will be the commander of the ship. But there arises the problem of giving order to other stations on his ship, lets say for example, the weapons console guy doesn't think that the commanders plan is going to work, and doesn't do it. If this was real life he might be punished or his rank decreased in some way, but in a video game that punishment isn't really much of a punishment, considering the hardcore gamers, that can grind their rank up again in another ship. That leads me to my question:

What system will you use to punish disobidience in a ship? because if someone doesn't obey the commander of the ship, that ship will probably lose the battle.

     Also:

If you read books or watch movies in every battleship theres a medical bay, weapons bay, reactor, and stuff like this. Will Caeron's 3000 battleships be massive flying cities with 100+  players on them, or 10 players controlling 90 NPCs?

Glad you asked.  While all the details are not yet worked out, you are correct that players will have rank such that the highest ranking PC will be the commander.  Note that in most instances, players on the same ship will belong to the same guild, which means that the commanding officer has control over who is in what position and when/if they advance in rank.  A player's skill may increase as he becomes more proficient, but rank is assigned by superior officers.  Now if a PC is disobedient or decides to mutiny or some other disruption, he may be arrested and thrown in the brig.  Of course, punishments will be limited and can be lifted if the offender performs a task to atone for the crime.  Unwarranted arrests will result in the arresting party being branded criminals and the arrested person released automatically.  Certain other factors weigh into the whole equation, but that's the basics of it.

The battleships indeed have medical bay, engineering section, weapons, crews quarters, recreation, equipment, conference rooms, launch/landing bays, fighter squadrons, etc.  They will be massive flying cities with real people on board.  Where a real person cannot take a role, an NPC will take his place.  Whenever a real person logs off, an NPC will take over his duties.

Saying that the graphics are not that good is one thing and it's perfectly understandable since the posted images are 2 years old and taken from a pre-alpha version of the engine.  However, comparing them to pong is not only a grossly ridiculous exaggeration, it simply proves you are not here to give constructive criticism, but merely want to bash something.

We are making every effort to improve every aspect of the game, including the graphics.  That being said, we are still 6-8 months from being where I'd like to be on the graphics side of things.  Perhaps you know of someone willing to help contribute to the engine's development or the 3D modeling/texturing for the game.

Also, we are completely unfunded and have created everything you see on basically $0 budget.  A nice chunk of funding would certainly help us improve every aspect of the game a lot quicker.

Does this mean the game will be free or you plan making a profit out of it?

Although we are currently unfunded, it will take considerable funds to take this game to the next level, market it, publish it, and maintain it.  So of course we are looking to make a profit off it.

Will it be possible to allign yourself with AI?  Or will there be really interesting Reasons for AI to let you join their ranks..Let me explain...
you belong to a very prestigious Clan or Guild... And you dont like orders anymore so you Betray your Boss and kill him or steal from him or what ever... Pirate AI is informed of your betrayel and they like your style.. and offer you a place onboard their craft...

Or maybe joining an AI infantry.... kinda like a soldier in StarShip Troopers...???
    wouldn't that be really cool?

By AI do you mean NPCs?  Are you asking if NPCs will ask you to join them?

AI to join up with players??

    I hate mmorpgs with that.

No offense but its exactly what you have players for.

  • diegolinkdiegolink Member Posts: 195

This game sounds pretty sweet, i luv sci-fi and currently playing Anarchy Online.

    I have some questions:

1.- The  crew is AI or players?

2.- How will it introduce FPS/RTS components?

3.- How $ will it cost mothly (aprox)

4.- Is this like a spaceship sim? or how do you define C3k

  • tomjscotttomjscott Member Posts: 40

    1. The crew will consist of both players and NPCs.  How many NPCs depends on how many real players you have to fill all the positions required.

    2. RTS elements are inherent since you will have coordinated battles on a huge scale with fleets of ships, fighters, crew, etc.  FPS not so much although you'll be able to choose first person perspective and direct your avatar to attack on command.  Yes, it'll be first person perspective and you must issue attack commands; No, it won't be based on your "skill" with a mouse or joystick.

    3. Comparable price to what is being charged in other MMO games at the time of release.

    4. Hard to nail it down to just a single thing, although it will be a very robust spaceship sim.  It's also a role-playing game that will have incredibly detailed missions and quests.  In phase 2 you'll be able to land on planets and engage in ground conflict and explore cities, dungeons, caverns, etc.

I have a question.. Is it possible to do some seamless planerary flight in your game?

Like in frontier elite, first encounters?

  • tomjscotttomjscott Member Posts: 40
I'm not familiar with that game so I looked around the internet and saw only old DOS based versions.  I couldn't find enough information to see first hand what you are asking.  I assume you mean can you fly ships over the ground terrain seamlessly all day long without ever stopping to load a new area.  If that is what you are asking then yes, we will have that, but not in Phase 1.  Phase 1 will include only space travel.
